Autism Seminar Set
Scheduled this year to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has again joined forces with Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to bring a seminar to Long Island that will help first responders and others not usually accustomed to interacting with those with autism better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise in an emergency situation. This year two seminars will be offered. The first is geared toward first responders and firefighters
but is equally as relevant to anyone who might have to interact with an individual with autism in a tense situation. It was created by a Massachusetts firefighter who is also the father of a son with autism and featured on NBC’s Today show. It will be presented by Jason Dorval, also a firefighter and the father of child with autism. The second, similar to the first seminar, is geared toward law enforcement, security, school support and hospital support personnel. Both will be held at Hampton Bays Middle School on Saturday, April 6th. The first starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Dorval, a certified public
fire and life safety instructor and presenter for the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC), will discuss identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the fastest growing neurobiological condition in the world. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD, as well as ways to build relationships with the ASD community. “As a parent of a
child with autism and a firefighter, I know firsthand that working with a developmentally disabled child can be challenging. Their lack of understanding, limited communication, and other special needs can be a huge problem in an emergency situation. This course will prepare first responders to better understand these individuals and react accordingly,” said Dorval. Flying Point Foundation founder Kim Covell said the feedback from last year’s seminar was so positive that it was important to offer it a second time and expand its scope to include anyone who might interact with
individuals with autism. The county has again approved first responders receiving three hours noncore professional credit for taking the seminar, added Covell. “The techniques and tools that each responder will learn in this seminar will be helpful to the patient, as well the provider by instilling confidence that he or she will be able to handle any situation that arises,” said Tom Lateulere, chief of education and training for the Suffolk County EMS Division. The seminars are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about communicating with an
individual with autism in a special situation. First responders who wish to obtain credit for attending the course should register through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services at 631.852.5800. All others should register by emailing info@ fpf4autism.org. Checkin opens at 9 a.m. for the morning session and a light breakfast will be served; check-in for the afternoon session will begin at noon and refreshments will be served.

guests about the animal world and nature. I have the privilege of watching thousands of students experience first-hand what they learn in books from the classroom. Our Summit partners, which include high school teachers from many public schools and organizations such as the North ShoreLIJ Health System, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Vision Long Island and others, worked hard to make this program a success.” This year’s Summit started with a keynote address by Donald Monti, president and CEO of Renaissance Downtowns. Mr. Monti spoke to students about the importance of becoming leaders and being active in building the social and economic future for Long Island through investment in Smart Growth-type planning, as well as building communities that will allow for economic growth and environmental preservation. This year’s Summit featured nine topical workshops that covered environmental, sociomedical and community issues.

Of Spring & Weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their
wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only
that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

Hospital took third place. Chefs Aneesah Cox and Natrell Fisher from Staten Island University Hospital took second place this year for their chipotlerubbed pork tenderloin with garlic brown rice pilaf, curry yogurt sauce, mango chutney and collard greens. Lenox Hill chefs Patricia Sobol and Johnny Beniquez were in third place with their shrimp dish that had a tomato saffron broth and a parsnip and celery root puree; chefs from Lenox Hill were in second place last year. Chefs from 13 of North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals and facilities diced, sautéed and blanched at Glen Cove Hospital’s Pratt Auditorium during the competition to create tasty, appealing and healthful dishes. The competition, which was held during National Nutrition Month, helps to show that hospital food can not only be healthful but it also surpasses the stereotypes of being bland and boring. During the competition,
chefs had access to a pantry, stove top burners and a farmers’ market. Each team was given 45 minutes to make a nutritious and delicious meal that was rated by three judges -- Adrian Ashby, an administrative associate at North ShoreLIJ who competed on Food Network’s “Chopped”; Joyce Shukri, RD, a healthcare specialist at Sysco Foods; and Robert Graham, MD, a physician at Lenox Hill Hospital who specializes in complementary and integrated medical therapies. All of the dishes had to be no more than 500 calories, 15 grams of fat and
600 milligrams of sodium; health system registered dieticians evaluated these recipes. “People may not realize this but our patients often enjoy the food we prepare at our facilities and rank it alongside that of restaurants,” said Michael Kiley, director of nutrition and food services at Glen Cove Hospital and chair of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s chef committee. He also organized the cooking competition. “Events such as this show that our staff can prepare diverse, tasty and nutritious meals for our patients to savor when they come to our facilities.”

Suffolk County is one of four municipalities in New York State who have implemented a pilot program named in honor of PFC Joseph Dwyer, a Suffolk County resident who joined the Army after 9/11 and was deployed to Iraq. PFC Dwyer suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and lost his battle with PTSD. The Peer To Peer program is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and allows veterans the opportunity to share and discuss their issues and problems with trained veteran personnel. The unique nature of
the program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators of the groups which provides a comfort and familiarity level to those veterans seeking assistance. Funding for the program was secured by Senator Lee Zeldin in the amount of $200,000 through the pilot phase of the program. “The Peer to Peer program is needed in Suffolk County as we have seen a rise of military suicides in our country,” said County Executive Bellone. “Those who are serving or who have served our country need our support and resources and the Peer to Peer program is designed to address the needs of the military community suffering from PTSD.”
Suffolk County was chosen as a pilot County because of its large and diverse veteran population coupled with its reputation for delivering quality services to veterans. The Peer to Peer program currently holds seven weekly group meetings throughout Suffolk County with more than 78 veterans actively participating in the program. The meetings operate with an acceptance of anonymity to ensure full participation by the military community. The program has received full support from Suffolk County Veterans Service groups and the Northport VA Medical Center who also refers veterans to the program.

SPARC Celebration
Legislator Tom Muratore attended the 7th Annual SPARC Celebration at the Centereach High School on Wednesday, March 13th. SPARC (Special Performance Achievement Recognition and Commendation) Awards are presented to Middle Country School District employees who are recognized for going
“above and beyond” the call of duty on a regular basis. The awards are broken down into three categories; Community Service, Distinguished Service, and Quiet Hero. The SPARC award is particularly prestigious because it represents colleagues recognizing their peers for special service. “I am proud to honor
these Middle Country employees for earning the recognition of their peers. These individuals earned the SPARC Award for various reasons, but they share this in common; they are committed to their jobs, and all truly care about the students in the district.” commented Legislator Muratore.
Leadership Initiative
Junior Music Man
On February 7th, Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Interim Principal Mr. Joseph Licato welcomed family, friends and members of the community to the 2013 production of one of Broadway’s most famous musicals, Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man! Despite the postponement of the show’s next two dates, due to the Nemo Blizzard, the show was spectacular! The play was held in the Alice R. Schaefer Auditorium at RMS, to a capacity audience. Director and producer Mr. Vincent Malafronte, his staff, and talented performers, put on a colorful show that
made members of the Connetquot community proud of its talented young students. Led by students Jackie Conlon (as Marian Paroo) and Liam Attridge (as Harold Hill) this gifted ensemble group of actors, singers and dancers told the story of Harold as a boys’ band organizer who would skip town with the community’s cash! By the end of this wonderful musical show, of course, Harold falls in love with Marian, and the audience comes to see him in a different light. Mr. Malafronte is proud of the students and staff that made The Music Man such a success. He extended his gratitude to
all of the talented students, from cast, crew and scenery helpers, that made the show such a success. He also extended his thanks to the faculty and staff, as well as the parents and entire Ronkonkoma community for their support. With a mixture of humor, drama, singing and dancing, The Music Man, Jr., entertained the excited audience, which would give the cast a standing ovation at the show’s conclusion! Congratulations to the cast, crew and advisors for putting on a show the entire Ronkonkoma community can be proud of!

Ryan Renfro was a running back & receiver (offense) and strong safety (defense) for Coach Hansen’s ‘Thunderbirds’. Ryan recorded 86 tackles, 5 interceptions and 4 forced
fumbles this season. He was selected Honorable Mention All-State, 2nd team All-Long Island and Defensive MVP of the PAL Senior All Star game. Ryan will join James Higgins at LIU-CW Post. Lauren Worden is a three year varsity starter and team captain for this year’s lady Thunderbird soccer team. Coach Shanks said that “I can put Lauren anywhere on the field and have no doubt that she can get the job done, and exceed my expectations.” Consensus is that Worden’s graduation will leave big shoes to fill on, and off, the field. Lauren will be attending Jacksonville University in the fall. Connetquot HS Principal Mr. Gregory Murtha joined AD Mark Dellecave in congratulating these outstanding studentathletes on their official ‘signing day’, and wish them continued success as they move on to their next academic, and athletic, challenges.

Connetquot High School’s student-run Anti-Bullying Club (ABC) organized it’s 1st Annual Mix-It-Up Day for February 7th. Club President (and founder) Ashley Lapine, and faculty advisor Barbara Martorelli, explained that the concept was originally proposed by the magazine ‘Teaching Tolerance’. The event is celebrated by schools across the country and was originally scheduled to be held on October 30th, but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy. The idea is to get students to sit, and mingle, with students they might not normally sit with at lunch time. Mrs. Martorelli said that “students in each lunch period took part in the program’s games and activities and, by the end of the Mix-It-Up Day, it became everything we could have hoped for, and more! Students were not only
participating in the planned activities, but many students were going over to students who were sitting alone, and asking to join them.” After the school day was over, ABC club members held a meeting to discuss the day’s events. While pleased with the overall interaction by the students, they began to make plans for an even more comprehensive program next year! Consensus, by members, teachers and students in general, was that for an event of this magnitude, this first Mix-It-Up Day was extremely successful. The ABC Club Mission Statement makes students aware of the consequences of bullying, and of being a passive bystander. It encourages young people to have a voice in creating a safe environment in, and out, of school, and to empower students with the
tools needed to help create a community of acceptance and diversity. Mrs. Martorelli thanked all the students, teachers and administrators for making the first Mix-It-Up day such a success. She also singled out the members of the ABC Club for their dedication to concepts of respect and acceptance: Ashley Lapine, Adiba Choudhury, Sam Hill, Bobby Nilsen, Brittany Fialkowski, Nick Teague, Prima Gupta, Alexa Dibalsi, Rachel Panico, Lexi Poje, Christine Mahoney, Michael Caradonna, Alexa Holland and co-advisor Debbie Billotto. Congratulations to each of the school counselors, psychologists, teachers, administrators and students for facilitating, and participating, in such a creative anti-bullying activity.

Kennedy Director of the Coalition. “According to the Surgeon General’s 2012 report Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, youth tobacco use is a “pediatric epidemic” and is caused, in part, by tobacco industry marketing.” Retailers in New York display an average of 32 square feet of tobacco products or the equivalent of more than 200 cigarette pack faces. In New York, 82% of retailers dedicate at least half of the space behind the checkout counter to openly visible tobacco products.

Long Island youth have seen enough marketing from the tobacco industry and will join teens around the country to stand up and speak out against big tobacco, today on National Kick Butts Day. In New York State, 107,000 high school students smoke and over 22,000 kids under 18 become new daily smokers each year. To tackle this issue head-on, the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island will be partnering with youth groups from Nassau and Suffolk Counties to hold Kick Butts Day activities. “Youth smoking is still a problem,” said Susan
