Spring Has Sprung On Fire Island The leaves are returning, the water is warming and newly born deer are showing their small heads.

As with every April, Fire Island is abuzz with life.

After a trip to our barrier island, one can immediately conclude that not everything has been drastically altered by last year’s Hurricane Sandy.

At first glance, everything seems as if it was in shambles; but upon further inspection, it is evident that nature is beginning to make a comeback!

Vegetation is already starting to fill in all of the damaged areas, and even with the ongoing construction, animals are finally making their way

back out of hiding, onto the beaches and into the water.

Seagulls are increasing in number and it seems as if they are thriving. Piping Plover populations have bounced back to a healthy number, considering their spot on the endangered species list.

Taking a stroll down the beach, one can already spot patches of Beach Heather, a very common yellow plant, dotting the shoreline.

Accounts of whale sightings are becoming less and less frequent, signaling the end to a cold winter, and the beginning of a beautiful summer.

All in all, life is finally returning to Fire Island, coincidentally just in time for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Spring is a very

crucial part in the health of Fire Island, as the beaches elongate and erosion is reversed. This cyclic trend will lead to more room for beachgoers in the 2013 season.

Nature isn’t the only thing on the mend after Hurricane Sandy; establishments, such as Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach, are getting ready to open up their doors. There is no doubt that Fire Island will be in “fighting shape” and ready for the masses as we kick off the season with a very solid spring.

Recognition Awards Michelle Price, MD, comedical Director of the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, and Kerry O’Sullivan, a nurse in Mather’s Emergency Department, were honored by Brookhaven Town with 2013 Women’s Recognition Awards.

The annual ceremony honors women who live or work in Brookhaven and who have distinguished themselves in their professions.

A board-certified radiologist, Price also educates her peers at the Hospital’s weekly Breast Cancer Committee and has been a keynote speaker at Mather’s annual Community Health Symposium. She lends her support to educational and fundraising programs including Breast Cancer Victory Day, Families Walk for Hope and One Enchanted Evening gala.

Price was named a 2012 Health Care Hero by Long Island Business News.

Price completed a fellowship in Breast Imaging at the Department of Radiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Cornell University Medical Center in New York City.

After her fellowship, Dr. Price was Assistant Attending Professor of Radiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/ Cornell University Medical Center. Dr. Price earned her medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City and attended the Medical Scholars Program for pre-clinical studies at the University of Miami School of Medicine. She completed her residency in radiology at New York Hospital.

Nursing Award from the Suffolk County Emergency Nurses Association and Mather Hospital’s 2012 RN Community Service Award. She has been an Emergency Department Nurse at Mather for eight years.

O’Sullivan has volunteered on several missions to Central America with Blanca’s House, which provides advanced medical care to children and families in regions where there is little or no access to such care.

Last summer, she provided lodging and care in her own home for a child from Ecuador and the child’s mother while the child underwent surgery for a cleft palate. O’Sullivan also has helped raise funds for Blanca’s House.

O’Sullivan received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.

Being Domestic

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved.

Right.

Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing.

Laundry was another issue.

Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe.

Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff.

Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them.

Well, as it turns out, when

you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine.

That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory.

Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

worthwhile hunting dogs. Daviess County Shelter currently has a staff of five, including some prison inmates, handling over 5,000 animals a year. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, Daviess has dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at this Kentucky shelter were euthanized.

Now the figure is much lower, less than 10 percent.

“In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a Coonhound named Valentine that they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess

dogs a month. In 2011 we rescued 40 dogs from this shelter, and 65 more in 2012. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Kentucky dogs and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. We can continue to make a difference for dogs at home, plus dogs from faraway.”

The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Today, with more than 8,000 local animal-welfare partners across the country, the foundation donates approximately $15 million a year to make a difference in the lives of millions of animals.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. recently announced it has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with the Daviess County Animal Control of Owensboro, Kentucky to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted.

Financing Lesson

Connetquot High School senior math students had the opportunity to learn about how to handle, save and borrow money on Tuesday, March 5th.

Their math teacher, Dana Fusco, and department chairperson Bethanie Rizzo, arranged for the local Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU) to send representatives to explain the basics of personal finance, and how to protect their current, and future, income.

Collazo and Michael Lombardo came prepared with a multi-media presentation about financial issues that are relevant to young students.

According to Mrs. Fusco the TFCU representatives “… came to educate our seniors on the basics of banking. A few of the topics covered were loans, interest rates, credit scores, different types of accounts, fees and the difference between credit unions and for-profit banks.”

The students interacted with excellent

questions, particularly those who currently earn a paycheck and sought to learn more about how to save, and borrow, in the future.

As these senior students look forward to a college education, and realize its cost, students could been seen taking copious notes, and asking important questions.

Connetquot HS Principal Mr. Gregory Murtha attended one afternoon session, and was impressed by the presentation, and the students’ attention.

Building Homes For Vets

On June 6th, members of VFW Post 6249 based in Rocky Point, joined Long Island Home Builders Corp and local elected officials as they gathered together to welcome Sgt. Ryan Donnelly and fiancée Tina McGrory to the site of their future new home located in Lake Ronkonkoma. Ryan was selected by a panel of Suffolk County Veteran Commanders led by VFW Post 6249 Commander Joe Cognitore.

VFW Post 6749 was established in 1953 and has a long history of

supporting Veteran’s causes and worthwhile community organizations.

Fundraising efforts have include shipping goods to Veterans and their families, support of local girl scout and boy scout troops, annual scholarships to Rocky Point High School Seniors, Shoreham Wading River High School Sgt. Jonathan Keller Memorial Scholarship and the Post’s Annual Golf outing supporting the Wounded Warriors Homes to returning Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans.

This active post participates annually in ceremonies and parades including Memorial Day, Veterans Day Pearl Harbor Day and the Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade and provides services for deceased Veterans at local funeral homes as well as providing transportation to post members for doctor and therapy visits.

On Tuesday, March 5th, over 300 members of the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School community attended the first From The Heart Thank You, Dinner. Organized by Bosti Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne, her staff, and the school’s dedicated Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), it’s purpose, according to Dr. Ihne was to “… simply say ‘thank you’ to the parents, as recognition for all they do the students.”

Tasty Italian cuisine, beverages and dessert were prepared & served by members of the faculty and PTA. Dr. Ihne added that “… tonight’s dinner was a huge success, and

I owe a tremendous ‘thank you’ to the staff that worked tirelessly to prepare for the event. The dinner was our way of expressing our gratitude to the Bosti families for their support throughout the year. It also provided an opportunity for the staff and families to come together in a friendly, casual atmosphere. Special ‘thanks’ to our dinner’s chairperson, Allison Weber for such a great night.”

Students joined their parents, teachers and Bosti administrators for a fun night out, as they enjoyed one another’s company, as well as so many home-made treats. Dr. Ihne thanked

the staff for all their help, along with the members of the PTA and the following local businesses for their support: Old World Fine Foods; Locust Avenue Deli; Modern Italian Bakery and the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Culinary Arts & Technical Center.

Connetquot Central School District Board of Education President Dawn Berntsen, Trustee Leo R. Marinick, former BOE President Raymond Carter and their families enjoyed the night’s festivities, along with Assistant Superintendent Kevin O’Brien.

TROOP SUPPORT - Connetquot School District’s John Pearl Elementary School students recently collected supplies, toiletries and snacks to send to U.S. military troops overseas. The students also wrote letters to accompany the donation boxes and thanked the servicemen for their heroic work. Cynthia Ventura, President of the Long Island Chapter of Blue Star Moms visited John Pearl Elementary to collect the donations along with U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Jacholwidik and now-retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Schenk.

Lazan is an author, lecturer and a believer that tolerance, respect and love can solve many of the world’s problems.

She developed that philosophy during a difficult life that almost ended at the BergenBelsen concentration camp in Germany, during WWII. Mrs. Lazan was invited to speak to the students and staff of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School in Oakdale, NY, on March 12th, by principal Ms. Susan Bailey, YFS Coordinator Dr. Laraine Pincus and the OBMS Parent-Teacher Association. Mrs. Lazan discussed her life, and book entitled Four Perfect Pebbles, beginning with her early years in Bremen, Germany and the happy life she shared with her parents and extended family. With the rise of the Nazi’s in the 1930’s and the passage of discriminatory laws restricting the rights of its citizens, including its Jewish population, her life began to change, and not for the better.

The family attempted to flee Nazi persecution, and made it to Holland. But in 1940 the Nazi’s conquered that small nation, and for

next six years her family lived in refugee, transit and prison camps including Westerbork in Holland, and Bergen-Belsen in Germany.

In the camps Marion and her family were separated, and forced to work as slave laborers. She described the horrible conditions they endured, and remembered those that died from starvation, disease, and the gas chambers. By the time the camps were liberated by the Russians in 1945, Marion was 10 years old, and weighed just 35 (thirtyfive) pounds. Her mom also survived, but weighed less than 85 pounds. While Marion, her mom and brother were reunited, her father died just days after the liberation of the camp.

By the end of WWII, the Nazi’s were responsible for the deaths of over 6 million Jews.

Marion’s story takes a positive turn when a refugee organization arranges for she, her mom and brother to emigrate to Peoria, Illinois, to begin a new life in America.

Eventually, she mastered the English language and graduated high school #8 in a class of almost 300 students! She would meet, and eventually marry, a New Yorker attending Bradley University by the name of Nathaniel Lazan.

They have now been

married for 60 years!

This highly respected speaker asks her audiences to be tolerant of others and not stereotype based on religion, color or race.

Mrs. Lazan stresses the importance of positive thinking, creativity and inner strength to overcome adversity. She has spoken to more than one million listeners over 27 years.

Her message is so powerful that a high school is named in her honor, in her birthplace of Bremen, Germany.

Many of the OBMS English classes read Mrs. Lazan’s book, Four Perfect Pebbles, and were eager to talk to her about her experiences, and specific events in the book. Ms. Bailey thanked Marion Blumenthal Lazan for sharing her powerful message of tolerance and respect for one another.

Mrs. Lazan thanked the students for their attention, and school officials for the opportunity to address such thoughtful children.

She ended her presentation by encouraging the students to be considerate of one another, tolerant of those who might appear, or speak, differently, and to respect the rights of everyone they meet.

SWORN IN - Islandia Village Mayor Allan M. Dorman and Trustees Diane Olk and Mike Zaleski were sworn in for another term during the April 2nd Village Board meeting. Mayor Dorman, Ms. Olk and Mr. Zaleski won their respective elections on March 13th. All three races were uncontested. The terms for Mayor and Village Trustee are four years. Mayor Dorman and Ms. Olk, who also serves as the Deputy Mayor, were first elected in 2005. Mr. Zaleski, who is also the Village’s Public Safety Officer, was elected in 2009.

On March 23, three hundred fifty children and adults came out for the Village of Islandia’s 8th Annual Easter Egg Hunt.

During the event, Mayor Allan M. Dorman made a special presentation honoring Shy Main Shieh for offering her time and talents at all of the village’s events. Ms. Shieh has

constantly volunteered her time at the village’s Easter Egg Hunt, Bar-B-Que, Ye Olde Fashioned Tag Sale and Pumpkin Fest events.

During the Easter Egg Hunt, children collected some of the 6,000 Easter eggs that were spread throughout the village hall grounds. Some of the eggs contained a ticket in which

the lucky children were able to redeem for a special prize.

Those in attendance got to meet the “Easter Bunny” and “Daisy the Duck.”

Islandia’s own “Singing School Bus Driver” Joe Guida came down to entertain the kids.

DENIM & DIAMONDS - Connetquot Central School District recently held its Denim and Diamonds Fashion Show and Dinner in support of the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC). Teachers from 10 Connetquot schools participated in the event by modeling the latest fashions from Raul E of NY, Ann Taylor Loft, Sparkly Fashions and Cache. Over 400 guests attended the event which raised money for financial grants to support student needs and community events. In addition to the show and dinner, over 75 baskets were raffles off to raise money for the cause. Over $100,000 has been donated since the annual event started.
