In recognition of their outstanding submissions, two W.S. Mount Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District have been named New York State winners in the 2013 PTA Reflections Program. Following this year’s theme of “The Magic of a Moment,” fifth-grader Arielle Rohan and second-grader Sammi Feil submitted original works in the areas of film production and photography, respectively. Later this March, contest organizers will announce which state winners will be advancing to the national
level of the contest. Arielle’s piece, which runs approximately 2-3 minutes, focuses on a young girl getting noticed in the world around her. She captured the film using the Video Star app on her iPad and set it to the Taylor Swift song “You Belong with Me.” Describing the subject matter of her film, Arielle stated, “It is about a young person needing to understand that they are special even if the world around them doesn’t notice that, and like the theme says, understanding the magic of a moment.”
Sammi’s photo was of a grouping of monarch butterflies – yet ironically enough, not on the butterfly bush in her backyard. “That was the most I had ever seen,” she said of her subject. “There were babies and adult butterflies – it was really pretty cool.” A total of 500 students from schools throughout Suffolk County entered the Reflections competition. Out of those 500, only 160 advanced to the state level of judging, and of those submissions, a mere 30 were selected as state winners.

Of Spring & Weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their
wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only
that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.
are too hot or cold,” the students stated in their write-up. The team invented, designed and prepared a 15page research document that earned them the distinction of honorable mention, signifying their place among the top 10 percent of all ExploraVision projects submitted to the competition. “This is an incredible accomplishment,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert. “Our fourth-graders ranked higher than hundreds of their high school counterparts!” Honorable
mention winners receive a certificate of achievement and a unique prize.

Fourth-grade SEAL (Studies Enriching Academic Learning) students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School participated in the Toshiba/ NSTA ExploraVision Science Competition, which encourages K-12 students to imagine what technology might be like in the future. In the case of one student team, Peggy Yin and Sapphire Perera, the people of tomorrow will be using the iHeat, a portable, earth-friendly heater for the iPhone. Inspired by the events of Superstorm Sandy and those victims left without electricity and heat for weeks, the pair thought it wise to design a small heater that could charge with natural resources. “Since many people have iPhones, we thought it would be great if they can pull out their phone and adjust the temperature to fit their needs if they

On February 25th, Lynne Schoepfer, Executive Director, SaveA-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. spoke to the “Green Teens” at their first monthly meeting, which was held at the Port Jefferson Free Library’s Teen Center. During her 45-minute presentation, Ms. Schoepfer talked about Save-A-Pet, what the organization does and how they can help through donations and volunteering their time. She also explained why it is better to adopt a pet from a shelter than from a retail pet store and the importance of spaying, neutering and microchipping your pets. Ms. Schoepfer said an animal which is spayed or neutered lives two to four years longer. Among the things that Save-A-Pet does, Ms. Schoepfer explained, were “puppy mill” rescues in which dogs used for breeding purposes are taken from the horrible conditions in which they lived and brought to

The presentation was then followed by a questionand-answer session. Ms. Schoepfer also explained that Save-APet operates two stores in Port Jefferson: Castaways, which sells pet items and offers animals for adoption, and The Barkin Basement, a thrift store. The sales proceeds from both stores go to benefit Save-A-Pet. She also urged those in attendance to donate their unwanted clothes to SaveA-Pet by placing them in the donation bins located on Save-A-Pet’s parking lot. Dressed to impress, and filtering between sets depicting life in Manhattan and quaint cafes in Havana, Cuba during the early 1950s, more than 100 R.C. Murphy Junior High School students took to the school’s stage to perform in this year’s musical, Guys And Dolls. Set in a world filled with high-rolling gamblers, nightclub performers and dedicated Salvation Army

missionaries, the classic play revolved around a bet made between characters Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit and how, as a result, their lives changed. During their fiverun engagement, which included one free dinnertheater event for local senior citizens and outpatients from Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, Murphy’s talented studentactors dazzled audiences
with their brilliant voices, precise choreography and expressive acting. The students rehearsed since the fall with the help of director Anthony Pollera, production manager Brian Pickford and choreographer Lauren Horn, all district teachers who have become integral to the school’s annual productions.

Excellence Across The Board Port Jefferson students from throughout the district were recognized by their coaches and members of the administration at this month’s Board of Education meeting. Elementary school principal Thomas Meehan began the meeting by presenting certificates of achievement to winners

all commended for their keen intellect and skill. Following these recognitions, varsity wrestling coach Michael Maletta and assistant coach Ian McEwen presented a certificate and framed photograph to Matteo DeVincenzo, the district’s first All-State finalist in 25 years. Matteo was
recently named runnerup in the 99-pound weight class at the New York State Wrestling Championship. Coach Maletta spoke to Matteo’s endless determination, dedication and resilient attitude in addition to his accomplishments as a scholar-athlete. Concluding the
recognitions for the evening was boys varsity track coach Rod Cawley, who presented James Burke with a certificate commemorating his accomplishments and attested to James’ reliability, perseverance and promise as an outstanding athlete. James holds the New York
State record as an eighthgrader and also as a ninthgrader in his key event, the mile. He also holds part of the state record for the intersectional relay. Furthermore, James recently became Port Jefferson’s first athlete to win a New York State championship in indoor track.

A Tasty Treat
STUDENT ATHLETE - Student-athlete Matteo DeVincenzo is presented with a certificate and framed photo of himself at the New York State Wrestling Championship. Pictured: Assistant wrestling coach Ian McEwen, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Matteo DeVincenzo, board trustee Ellen Boehm and Varsity Wrestling coach Michael Maletta.
Connecting with studies in math, English language arts and the school’s character education program Rachel’s Challenge, thirdgrade students in Kathryn Comiskey’s and Maureen MacDowell’s classes completed a tasty project. Working in teams, the students measured, poured and mixed batter for 40 loaves of Irish soda bread for the St. James Food Pantry, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. While whipping up their creations, the students were challenged with making equivalent
measurements when one of the tools the recipe called for was removed. For instance, after the teachers removed the onecup measuring tool from the tables, the students brainstormed to use either two one-half scoops or another denomination of equal value. Explaining that the classes are in the middle of their lessons on fractions, Ms. MacDowell commented, “This project really solidifies their understanding of equivalent fractions, as it enables them to visualize the problems and apply the lessons to a real-world
situation.” Third-grader and avid baker Kelsey Sabel found that the task of fraction substitution proved to be no difficulty for her, stating, “I just thought about what we talked about in class and was able to quickly figure out how to still make the batter by the recipe.” The teachers baked the completed batter at home and worked with the students the following day to create personal cards to accompany each bread donation.
A TASTY TREAT - Nassakeag Elementary School third-grade students made Irish OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT - Student-athlete James Burke was commended soda bread in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. A total of 40 finished loaves were donated for his outstanding achievement in Boys Varsity Track. Pictured: Superintendent of to the local St. James Food Pantry. Little Shelter Adoption Center 33 Warner Road, Huntington • 631.368.8770
More than 100 guests showed up at Save-APet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc.’s St. Pitty’s Day Party, held on March 16th. Those in attendance were looking to support the shelter, learn more about the pit bull breed, and meet and greet the many companion animals that are all up for adoption at Save-A-Pet. Front and center were Blarney and Clover, two of the “Fab Four” pit bulls that were recently rescued from deplorable conditions in Mastic, after their owner moved out of the state. Both dogs seemed to love the attention being lavished on them by visitors and volunteers, alike. One of the four, Patty, has already found a loving home. Shamrock,
another female member of the “Fab Four,” is still being treated for internal parasites and should be available for adoption soon. “We have so many pit bulls here at Save-A-Pet,” said Founder/President Dori Scofield. “An event like this gives the public a chance to come down, meet the dogs, learn more about pit bulls, and see for themselves how positively this breed responds to love and proper treatment.” Guests enjoyed an authentic Irish buffet of corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, delicious desserts, beer, and Irish beverages, which were all prepared by Save-A-Pet’s staff and volunteers. More than $1,000 was raised for the shelter and its animals. Four dogs were adopted
as a result of the party, like Jerry, a one-year-old pit bull. “The best part about an event like this is that after people meet these dogs and see how terrific they are, we get a lot of applications for their adoption,” Ms. Scofield said. Lynne Schoepfer, Executive Director of Save-A-Pet, seconds that notion, “Pit bulls are such a misunderstood breed of dog. When they are treated with kindness and love, they make wonderful family pets. Once people meet them in person, they can’t believe how sweet they are.” For more information or to make a donation, please contact Save-A-Pet at 631.473.6333, or visit www.saveapetli.org.
Ward Melville High School’s Peer Athletic Council Team will be hosting a St. Baldrick’s event on Friday, April 5th, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the high school gymnasium in an effort to help raise funds for childhood cancer research and awareness.
PACT invites anyone interested in helping this cause to join the festivities and celebrate these young heroes with music, food and exciting activities for all ages. Those willing to brave the buzzer will have the opportunity to shave their head in support of
this noble charity, and anyone looking to help this worthy cause can make a monetary donation. More details about the event will be posted on the district website, www. threevillagecsd.org, as they become available.
