Earl L. Vandermeulen High School mathematics teacher and math team adviser Dennis Christofor recently announced the results and district winners of the American Mathematics Competition and the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association Contest.

In February, high school students participated in the American Mathematics Contest 10 and the American Mathematics Contest 12. Both tests contain 25 multiplechoice questions and are

75-minute examinations in secondary school mathematics containing problems that can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts.

In March, students in both the high school and middle school participated in the annual SCMTA competition. Levels E and J are generally for accelerated students, while Level IV is for pre-calculus students. Their scores represent their standing among students across Suffolk County.

They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive.

Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued.

After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting...

And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue.

Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead.

“Yeah. So what’s the problem?

You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point.

“Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then.

“Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?”

A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver.

“Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried.

“Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep.

But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

By: Tyler Cianciulli Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism.

For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island.

Approximately one

dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced.

This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal.

Unfortunately, my team,

Local H.S. Students Race For Autism St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively.

Many of our other boats also did well.

For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone.

With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.

was combined with soda, and got a firsthand look at how hydrogen peroxide decomposes when exposed to yeast. By studying water lock technology – in particular sodium polyacrylate – the students even learned the answer to a question many parents have: why a baby’s diaper will not work properly when submerged in the ocean.

“Having the Stony Brook University chemistry students conduct experiments with Mount elementary students was an invaluable opportunity,” stated principal Dr. Nathalie Lilavois. “Our students were highly engaged and really asked critical questions. The Stony Brook students were great at having our students think about the experiments and try to answer their own questions. We hope to continue building this strong partnership with the university.”

The college students visited Mount as part of their American Chemical Society Chapter’s community outreach program, sponsored by an innovative activities grant. Prior to their visit, they had designed the demonstrations with the goal of appealing to their younger peers’ interests.

Working in small groups, the elementary schoolers rotated through a series of demonstration stations that focused on topics such as polymers, reactions with catalysts, and luminescence and density.

They received a brief overview of the topic at each station and were able to witness an experiment that visually depicted the sophisticated subject matter. For example, the students helped create a long chain of polymers using a blue substance and watched as the polymer connection found in a Styrofoam cup was broken.

They learned about different levels of density when liquids with different properties were poured gently into a common container and remained separated to create a density column. With only warm water being used, they observed the solidto-liquid transformation of gallium, a metal that melts at a relatively low temperature point. They saw a catalyst reaction occur when Mentos candy

On April 3rd, Briscoe Protective Systems Inc. announced the winners of the Bert Briscoe Memorial Scholarship.

The recipients are three students, related to members of the Suffolk County Fire District Managers Association (S.C.F.D.M.A.).

Megan Sunderman, a student at William Floyd High School, received a $500 scholarship.

Runners-up included Paul M. Adams, Jr., who is currently attending Adelphi University, and Daniel Scura, who is

a student at the State University of New York at Cortland; they will each receive $250.

Megan and Paul were given a tour of the company and presented with a framed certificate, a scholarship check and a luncheon in their honor.

Daniel was unable to attend the event, and a luncheon will be given in his honor at a future date. The winners were chosen to receive this award based on their financial need, community service, career plans and the exemplification of Briscoe’s core value of

Additionally, he has served as the district’s “energy czar” for the past three years, bringing substantial savings to the district through his efforts.

Board of Education President Kathleen Brennan shared her sentiments and thanked Esposito for his many years of service and for the “care and concern for the students whose lives you have touched.” Brennan first came to know Esposito through the school’s Robotics Club, to which he dedicated a tremendous amount of time, energy and effort.

“He really helped to foster the program and encouraged students to remain interested in robotics,” she said.

The antics of conman Harold Hill’s visit to River City, Iowa was the storyline behind this year’s school musical at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village School District.

During a three-day run of The Music Man, students transported audiences of all ages back in time to the summer of 1912 to watch the hilarity that

ensued when Mr. Hill tried to scam the townsfolk of their money by promising to teach their musically disinclined children to play musical instruments.

Laughing and humming along to some of the familiar tunes, such as “Seventy-six Trombones,” audiences were not only entertained by the Broadway hit but also captivated by the talented performers and

predominantly studentcomprised pit orchestra.

The students, with direction from teacher Melissa Anderson, worked diligently since the winter to ensure that the performances were executed successfully. The level of dedication to their performances was evident and left the audiences looking forward to next year’s show.

Qualified To Compete

Extending their long and well-earned reputation for scientific excellence, Science Olympiad teams from all three secondary schools once again dominated during this year’s competition season.

Earlier this year, Ward Melville High School’s and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s varsity teams were ranked first during their regional competitions and R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s team ranked second, earning all three teams the chance to compete at the New York State Science Olympiad Competition in Syracuse this April.

Surrounded by hundreds of the state’s top scienceminded students, Three Village students once again demonstrated their scientific prowess and maintained their reputation for achieving

excellence. At the state competition, both Ward Melville’s and Gelinas’ teams placed first and R.C. Murphy’s team came in third. As first-place finishers, Ward Melville and Gelinas have qualified to compete at the national tournament in Ohio this May. This year, 51 teams from across New York competed in Ward Melville’s Division C and 35 in Gelinas’ and Murphy’s Division B. During the competition, these topranking state teams competed in 25 diverse events, including anatomy, crime busters, mousetrap vehicle, helicopter, and rocks and minerals. Medals were awarded to the top six teams in each event.

In the past three years, Ward Melville’s team has been ranked second in the state contest and 14th (2010), 18th (2011)

and 16th (2012) in the National Science Olympiad Competition.

Gelinas’ team has been ranked state champions four times and qualified for the national competition in 2003 as well as each year from 2005-2012. Murphy has advanced to the state competition for the last seven years and has ranked among the top three teams at states for the last five years.

The Science Olympiad competition engages students in a variety of events covering higherlevel science topics and ranks their performance on a decreasing scale, making lower combined totals more desirable. Topics often span such subjects as physics, chemistry, earth science, biology and technology.

Adopt-A-Seal

With the help of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation’s Adoption Program, Setauket Elementary School kindergartners had the chance to enhance their studies on mammals when they adopted a local seal in need. Stranded on the beach of Fire Island’s Cherry Grove, the young seal was rescued by local residents and transported to the Riverhead recovery center for rehabilitation.

“As part of the kindergarten curriculum, the students learn about mammals, animal habitats and various degrees of animal adaptations, and this grade-level project provided them with a tangible way to understand those concepts,” explained kindergarten teacher Kim Shaughnessy, who with her family has been adopting seals from the foundation since 2008.

Since the adoption of their seal, which the students voted to call

“Sunny,” the classes have been completing multidisciplinary projects about the species.

For example, using a stuffed seal, one class went on weekend adventures with their stuffed Sunny and journaled about their travels in a class workbook. To further understand why blubber is important to mammals, several teachers created a simulation station that students could visit during science class to experience how a glove covered in “blubber” protects their hands from feeling the coldness of ice water.

Tapping into the school’s technology, the students were able to observe Sunny in her new habitat through video cameras set up in her recovery area.

To express the foundation’s appreciation for the kindergartners’ efforts, educational volunteer Steven Abbondondelo recently visited each class to present the students

with Sunny’s adoption certificate and bookmarks created by the foundation’s workers. During the visit, the classes read aloud a fictional story about a seal in a situation similar to Sunny’s, had the chance to ask questions about their “class pet” and presented Mr. Abbondondelo with several boxes of supplies they had collected for the foundation’s hospital.

The students were happy to learn that Sunny is expected to be released back into the Long Island Sound in neighboring Port Jefferson at the end of April – a release that they will have the chance to attend with their families.

The students will be able to continue to learn about their adopted seal, as she will be released with a tracking device attached to her skin.

Primary funding for this project came from a Three Village Educational Foundation mini-grant.

Families Walk For Health

NEW HIRES - Six students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Dental Assisting Program at Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport were recently hired at local dental offices at the culmination of their internships. Students in the Dental Assisting Program learn how to work chair side with the dentist, prepare dental materials, perform basic business procedures, and prepare client’s data as well as receiving practical experience in radiology and four-handed dentistry.

More than 15,000 women in our community this year will receive care at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital.

On Saturday, May 4th, at 9 a.m., area residents can show their support for these women and the Center by taking part in the 19th Annual Families Walk for Hope.

Hundreds of people take part each year in the five-

mile walk through scenic Port Jefferson and Belle Terre. They walk to support women with breast cancer.

They walk in memory of a mother, sister, daughter, friend or co-worker whose life was cut short by the disease. And they walk to raise funds to help women receive state-of-the-art breast care at Mather Hospital.

Several Three Village Central School District student-musicians have been named winners in the 8th Annual Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation Competition.

In the elementary division, Minnesauke Elementary School second-grader Austin Choi was named the first-place winner for his performance of Melody Bober’s “March Macabre,” while Nassakeag Elementary School fifth-

Board of Education President Kathleen Brennan shared her sentiments and thanked Esposito for his many years of service and for the “care and concern for the students whose lives you have touched.” Brennan first came to know Esposito through the school’s Robotics Club, to which he dedicated a tremendous amount of time, energy and effort. “He really helped to foster the program and encouraged students to remain interested in robotics,” she said.

“I am constantly impressed and amazed that whenever I am at the school, Pete is always there,” said board trustee Mark Doyle, who remarked on the “innumerable” evenings and weekends that Esposito had dedicated to the school and its well-being. The district’s “energy czar,” as he was referred to by fellow

faculty and staff members, even went as far as walking around the buildings, turning off lights and monitors as part of his constant effort to conserve energy.

In addition to the many accolades from the board trustees, members of the Port Jefferson community attended and spoke publicly to show their tremendous support and gratitude.

One parent emphasized Esposito’s ability to earn the trust and respect of the students, saying, “Those are two things you don’t typically hear a teenage boy talk about.”

“He is a community member, educator and valued member of the staff,” said Assistant Superintendent for Business Sean Leister.

“Everyone will truly miss him and all that he brings to the district.”

W.S. Mount Elementary School fourth-grader Sofia Stacchiola won second place in the early intermediate division for her performance of “Doll’s Dream” by Theodore Oesten, and sixth-grader Katie Zhao was named second-place winner in the early advanced division for her performance of

Notturno Op. 54, No. 4 by Edvard Grieg.

These awards reflect not only the effort and talent of the students, but also the support of music education that the parents, school and community provide.

As a first-place winner, Austin will also receive a scholarship and perform the winning piece at one of two honors recitals held at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center this June.

Peter Esposito, director of technology and assistant principal for grades pre-K through 12 for the Port Jefferson Union Free School District, will be leaving the district this school year and was honored at this month’s Board of Education meeting. At the March meeting of the Board, Esposito tendered his resignation so that he may pursue an opportunity in a neighboring district.

Since his appointment as teacher by the district in 2001, Esposito has also served as robotics team coach, adviser to the Science Olympiad team, science, math and technology club leader, soccer coach, baseball coach and dean of students.

Additionally, he has served as the district’s “energy czar” for the past three years, bringing substantial savings to the district through his efforts.

“While this seasonal enigma has not yet been

completely explained, it is believed that during the winter, people with depression are often surrounded by persons who are feeling downhearted, too, because of the weather,” continues Ms. Buhse.

“However, with the arrival of Spring, people who were feeling down because of the weather start to feel better; and people who are depressed for other reasons remain depressed.

Walk/Run for Friends of Karen The Walk/Run For Friends of Karen at The Long Island Marathon, is an opportunity to help children diagnosed with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses.

The 5K Walk/Run on will be held on Saturday, May 4th, and the 10K, Half

& Full Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 5th, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life threatening illnesses and their families in

order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,400 children in the New York tri-state region.

The Walk/Run for Friends of Karen was started in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Evelyn

Anderson, a Friends of Karen parent who wanted to run a half marathon to honor her son, Luke, diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and now enjoying growing up with his loving family. Last year, more than 300 walkers and runners joined the team

The Competition, the auto industry’s largest school-to-work initiative, pits the nation’s best high school automotive vocational education students against one another for the title of ‘America’s Top Technician’.

The National Finals, held in New York in conjunction with the New York International Automobile Show, are possible thanks to the generous contributions of over 125 industry sponsors including automakers, industry organizations, OEM suppliers, educational institutions, and dealers associations from across the country.

This year, prizes and scholarships totaling more than $3 million were awarded to the participants. Snap-on, the Competition’s Official Tool Supplier, provided tool sets to all competitors.

Local H.S. Students Race For Autism

Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism.

For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island.

Approximately one

dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced.

This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal.

Unfortunately, my team,

St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively.

Many of our other boats also did well.

For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone.

With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.
