Senior leadership from Stony Brook Medicine gave Pendergast a gift – a genuine Louisville Slugger baseball bat engraved with the words: “SBU and the Ride for Life ‘Strike out ALS’.” The gift symbolizes Pendergast’s advocacy, courage, endurance and vision in the cause to find a cure for ALS. “We are determined to advance ALS research at Stony Brook,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “This is a time when we are learning more about the science of ALS, as a disease and what biological and neurological

Greeted by their families, supporters and a shining display of 6,000 pinwheels, Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient and advocate, and other ALS patients, rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus for the annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, marking the halfway point of the ride from Southold to Manhattan, which concluded May 18th. The pinwheels represented the American lives lost each year to ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During the ceremony, Pendergast presented a check on behalf of the Ride for Life for $150,000 to Stony Brook University to support ALS research at Stony Brook Medicine and the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island.

This year residents from St. Catherine of Siena proudly won the silver medal in bowling as residents from Our Lady of Consolation took the silver medal in the volleyball competition.

Frank Bertolino, a resident from Our Lady of Consolation, led his team to be the first place winner of the gold medal in the distance throw competition. Nine

residents from Good Samaritan Nursing Home also competed and proudly came away with a silver medal in the basketball throw.

This event is a wonderful way for our seniors to participate in a little fun competition and come away feeling good about themselves. At Catholic Health Services of Long Island we promote the importance of enhancing the quality of our residents’ lives and this is just one small way in which we do.

On Friday, May 10th, the three skilled nursing facilities of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center, West Islip, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Sayville and St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in Smithtown, participated in this year’s Senior Golden Games.

The counseling staff is comprised of licensed social workers and mental health professionals.

Counseling appointments are scheduled from Monday through Friday.

Counselors develop treatment plans that meet the unique needs of each individual client. Travel reimbursement, via public transportation, is also available.

Huntington Economic Development Corporation began soliciting ideas for Huntington Station revitalization.

Many people responded that the intersection of New York Avenue and Olive Street was a blighted area that needed to be addressed, and the concept of a pedestrian plaza was raised.

With a HUD Economic Development Initiative grant secured by Rep. Steve Israel, the EDC hired a local architect, Eduardo Lacroze, and engineer Thomas Mazzola to assist the planning process.

The EDC held two plaza design meetings to solicit concepts.

Participants favored four different renditions.

Lacroze combined two of the concepts into one to create the resulting design.

Construction funds for the plaza came from the Town’s Open Space Fund Neighborhood Enhancements fund that also funded the streetscaping improvements along New York Avenue to Pulaski Road. The $2.5 million in Town Open Space funds was supplemented by $100,000 from Suffolk County’s Downtown Revitalization Grant program to cover artist materials and brick pavers.

Central to the Plaza, and to community enjoyment of it, is the

sculpture, Generations, by artist Madeline Wiener.

Wiener was selected in a competition run by the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee.

In 2011, the committee issued a Request for Qualifications.

Wiener was selected after a review of the 54 submissions.

An Artist Selection Panel unanimously recommended Wiener based on her extensive experience, the quality of her past work, and the appropriateness of her “bench people” concept for this project location. That recommendation that was enthusiastically endorsed by the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee and the EDC before being approved by the Town Board.

Generations is a four-piece limestone sculpture -- guitar player, grandmother & child, guitar case, and drum. It is the latest in a series of the artist’s “bench people:” figurative sculptures that the public can also sit on.

Generations draws upon the importance of music in the community as well as a strong cross-cultural and multi-generational emphasis on families.

While she lives in Denver now, Wiener grew up in the Bronx and has friends and relatives on Long Island.

“I saw before me generations that have grown up here. I learned about the history of the generations who developed Huntington Station,” Wiener said during her remarks at the dedication ceremony. Noting how absorbed she became in the process, she added, “This is really, deeply, a very personal commission, more than any others.

This is about my soul, my family’s soul and the soul of Huntington Station.”

As the plaza was under construction, the Huntington Station BID asked for a Norway spruce to be planted. The tree will be used as the official holiday tree for Huntington Station, and will be site of Huntington Station’s first tree lighting in December.

Days To Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic.

As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,

I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!).

Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time.

Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I

still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th.

Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening?

Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have.

Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation.

The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle.

So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

The Town of Huntington dedicated and officially opened the new pedestrian plaza at New York Avenue and Olive Street on May 22nd, with Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Council Members Mark Cuthbertson and Susan A. Berland joining community residents and other stakeholders in celebrating the latest advance in Huntington Station’s revitalization.

“This is the culmination of many years of planning and community input,” Supervisor Petrone told the audience. “This is truly what we can say is a community inspired revitalization project.”

“In spite of the challenges in Huntington Station, the work continues, and this plaza, and the sculpture, and what is here, signifies a commitment,” Councilman Cuthbertson said, “In our case, it is a commitment in stone to a revitalization process that is ongoing.”

“Today is a positive, great day, and let us continue going forward,” Councilwoman Berland said. Referring to the sculpture that is central to the plaza, she said, “It gives you that positive framework that is going to be the key for a great revitalization in Huntington Station.”

Recently, a group of eleven local women were honored for their efforts to help build better communities. As part of his 2013 Women of Distinction ceremony, Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci celebrated the efforts of the 11 women in the fields of business, education, humanitarian work, military service, community/civic affairs and healthcare.

“Our community is blessed to have tremendous women who have enhanced the lives of countless residents from Long Island and beyond,” said Lupinacci. “These women are responsible for amazing acts of self

sacrifice and progress that have transformed our communities.

Whether it’s opening the world of reading to young minds, raising awareness of domestic violence, or helping those less fortunate across the globe, each has made a lasting impact on the lives they’ve touched.

Amanda was also named “Best in Grade,” a recognition that provided her school with a $50 grant toward art supplies.

Prints of the winning artwork are on display in the front lobby of Oldfield Middle School.

Sophomore Wins Essay Contest The Japan Center at Stony Brook University (JCSB) recently held their 8th Annual Essay Competition, a writing contest designed to promote awareness and understanding of Japan in the United States and to help young Americans broaden their international horizons.

The competition, co-sponsored by JCSB and Canon U.S.A, Inc., is separated into a high school and college division, and open to students enrolled in high school or college (undergraduate) in the New York metropolitan area. This year’s competition brought in 199 entries from 32 different high schools and two colleges.

For their essays, contestants were encouraged to write about one or more aspects of Japan, including, but not limited to: Japanese art, culture, tradition, values, philosophy, history, society, politics, business and technology in relation to their personal views, experiences and future goals. Winners were recognized at an award ceremony and reception held at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University.

“Contestants are not required to have experience visiting Japan or learning the language,” said Eriko Sato, Chair, Executive Committee, JCSB, and a Lecturer in the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at Stony Brook. “Students have total freedom on how they develop their essay.

Because Japan and America are culturally quite distant, the challenge of relating Japanese culture to our lives in America has resulted in many inspiring essays.”

Madison Jaye LoFaso, a sophomore at Huntington High School, took home the top prize for the high school division winning $3,000, a Canon camera and an award certificate. She also received a special certificate from Shigeyuki Hiroki, Ambassador and Consulate General of Japan in New York, who also serves as a judge. She was selected for her work, “No Stroll in the Park,” about a Saturday morning spent with her parents at the John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden in Mill Neck, NY.

In her essay, Madison detailed how she began the day wishing she was elsewhere. Then after taking in the serene beauty and learning more about the garden from her tour guide, she found herself lost in her surroundings – so much so that she didn’t check her cell phone once.

“On the drive home it hits me; a feeling of regret for my behavior toward my parents at the start of the day,” Madison wrote. “What if they relented and let me stay home? I would never have learned that aspects of the Japanese culture could have such an emotional effect on me. I only hope that someday I can travel to Japan and visit some authentic Japanese gardens.”

Camille Tedeschi, Madison’s teacher remarked, “This contest is quite unique as it gives students an

opportunity to write about Japan in a way that connects to their learning and their personal lives,” she said. “After traveling to Japan in 2010, this contest has grown to be one of the passions that I love to share with my students.

Maddie is never going to forget this achievement and experience and I know it will open up her mind and heart to want to know more about Japan and all of its wonders.”

Ravi Jain from Syosset High School placed second

for his essay, A Song In My Heart, about a six-week summer visit to Japan that created a friendship that overcame language barriers. He received a $1,500 prize, a Canon camera and an award certificate. Finishing third and receiving a $750 prize, a Canon camera and an award certificate was Emily Linko from Hauppauge High School for her essay, Spirit of Self Sacrifice about sacrifice and how a group of elderly citizens assembled to help clean up after the March 2011 earthquake in Japan.

Winning a Merit Award and a $200 prize were Charles Beers, Huntington HS; Lewin Kim, Horace Mann HS (Bronx, NY); Natsuko Sato, Arlington HS (LaGrange, NY); and Kate Snider, Herricks HS (Searingtown, NY).

In the college division, Melisa Rose Kavanah, a Stony Brook senior majoring in English won the top prize for her essay entitled, Understanding Impermanence.

Another Stony Brook student, Ali Gilani Syed, a junior majoring in engineering won the Uchida Memorial Award for his essay entitled, Wabi-Sabi: Nothing Is Perfect, Even Gardens Have Weeds.

In these winning essays, both authors shared an unbearable experience, that is, the death of a friend for Kavanah and the passing of a beloved grandmother for Ali. Kavanah and Ali were presented with prizes of $3,000 and $1,000, respectively, a Canon camera and an award certificate.

All of the winners in each division have been invited to visit Ambassador and Consulate General Hiroki, at his official residence in Manhattan for a formal lunch meeting on Saturday, May 25th.

The entries were judged by a panel of Stony Brook University faculty members and two honorary judges, Ambassador and Consulate General Hiroki and Joe Adachi, President & CEO of Canon U.S.A., Inc. This essay competition is also supported by the Professional Education Program at Stony Brook University.

Schools to help a host of South Huntington teachers and administrators kick-off the always-exciting event.

A tradition since 1978, the Minithon is both a culmination of a yearlong fitness training program for the students and an opportunity for them to meet their future classmates as they prepare to enter Silas Woods Sixth Grade Center in the fall.

“An event like the Minithon Prediction where each participant strives to be the best that they

can personally be reminds us all that when we look beyond winning and instead focus on individual fitness goals, we take giant steps towards a lifetime of improved health,” D’Amaro said. “I thank the South Huntington School District for setting the students on the right path and applaud all of the Minithon participants for their hard work, determination, perseverance and winning attitude.”

“Making the recordings of Town meetings readily available to our residents on line in their entirety or by specific item request, is a valuable tool to help bring the business conducted at town hall into the homes of residents who are unable to attend meetings,” said Councilwoman Susan A. Berland, who sponsored the move to begin recording the meetings several years ago. “Overall, the features of the new site make government more transparent and provide the tools to make retrieving information convenient for our residents.”

The site was developed with the assistance of QScend Techologies, the company whose QAlert product is the basic for Huntington @ Your Service, the citizen request management system the Town launched a year ago.

QScend will host the site.

The video archiving and indexing of public meetings is provided by Granicus Inc., whose award-winning cloud platform is used by hundreds of governments across the country.

Supervisor Petrone and Councilman Cuthbertson thanked the members of the website update committee for their hard work on the project: Bill Crowley, Stephen Carballeira and Steve Gordon from the IT Department; A.J. Carter and Philip Ingerman from the Supervisor’s office; Carolyn Plante from the Human Services Department; Paul Bosch from the Parks and Recreation Department and Matthew Laux from the Environmental Waste Management Department.

They also thanked the many Town employees who offered comments and suggestions throughout the update process.

AMVETS Post 48 and American Legion Post 155 was asked to provide assistance as a community service at the 3rd Annual Veterans Stand Down on May 10th at the Northport VA Medical Center.

The Northport VAMC sponsored this annual event to help homeless, and at risk for homelessness, Veterans in need of assistance.

Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson announce the launch of the new, updated Town website, which features improved organization, easier navigation, quick links to social media and multimedia features, all of which provide an enhanced experience for persons visiting the site.

The update, more than a year in the making, is the first major revision to the Town’s site since at least 1999 and reflects changes since then in what people expect from government websites. The new site, which went live this morning, is designed to act as a portal both to Huntington Town government and to the town of Huntington itself, including cultural and historic attractions and business groups.

“This new website brings Huntington’s online presence into the year 2013, with the look, feel and, most important, the functionality that our residents deserve,” Supervisor Petrone said. “I invite residents to visit the site and become familiar with its many new features.’

“A key element of this upgrade is the way the website adapts for use on smart phones and tablet computers, which is how more and more people are accessing government sites,” Councilman Cuthbertson said. “The site also makes it easier for residents to access and fill out forms to be filed with the Town.”

Supervisor Petrone and Councilman Cuthbertson spearheaded the move to update and upgrade the wesbite.

Persons visiting the site, http://huntingtonny.gov, will immediately notice its cleaner organization, increased use of photographs and improved navigation, including portals at the top of the page that help residents find what they need more quickly, including a “services” tab organized along the lines of the different functions of Town government residents want to access. They will also notice navigation bars on the left side of the home page with the most popular links.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis.

Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses!

For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class.

This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences.

All of the stress that comes with waiting for

your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down.

These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over.

These students have done it, they have completed their journey.

Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip!

Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter

grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career.

The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall.

This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic.

So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.
