ore than 450 people joined Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members of the Town Council in marking the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Koran War at a breakfast that featured remarks from the Town officials and from the Vice Consul General from the Korean consulate in New York City.

Vice Consul General Hyung-gil Kim thanked the American troops who served in the war.

The Annual Snapper Derby Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Captree State Park. The purpose of this event is to encourage children to fish; however all ages are welcome. There is no entry fee; however, a Vehicle Use fee will be in effect.

Fishing locations are throughout all of Captree State Park. Equipment prizes for 1st through 5th places will be awarded in the following age groups: 7 years old and younger; 8-12 years of age and 1316 years of age. Prizes will be presented at the awards ceremony, and winners must be present to receive prize. Snappers will be weighed alive, and live release is encouraged.

Eminent Domain: Friend Or Foe?

Eminent Domain is arguably an attack on the rights of American citizens.

It seems unfair that the government can just force a family out of their home.

Sure, they offer a small sum of money to cushion the grief, but is it really adequate compensation?

Our government claims to buyout the houses at market value, but with the economy in shambles as it is, market value is poor.

In my town, on Fire Island, you can refuse the buyout. You can simply say no to the puny sum offered to you. But if you do so, the government reserves the right to just take your house in the event of another disaster. If your

house gets more than fifty percent damaged in the future, you can kiss your home goodbye.

After refusing this buyout, your insurance rates would skyrocket. You would not be able to get flood insurance. Would it even be worth staying?

The economic toll that this refusal would have on the future market value of your house is astounding.

Why is this fair? Why do we accept the fact that the government controls this facet of our lives?

Some of the members of my town are doing everything we can to make sure our homes stay intact through the winter. We are dropping thousands

of dollars on “trap bags,” which promise to naturally build up a dune and protect our little town.

Beach Scraping is also an option, albeit a short-term solution. These small scale projects are doubtfully going to give us adequate protection from Mother Nature.

In actuality, we do not need this protection from the elements; we need it from the government.

When my mother came to America thirty-five years ago, she was not expecting to be at the mercy of the government, she was expecting total freedom. Eminent Domain contradicts those freedoms promised to us all.

Art Exhibit Launched On Friday, July 12th, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. The show, entitled The Good Earth, consists of unique multimedia original pieces interpreting the forces of nature so necessary for the production of wine.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco congratulated members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force recently at a ceremony in Yaphank.

The Task Force, along with the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative, were the recent recipients of a 2013 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties.

One Last Look By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions.

First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm).

As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a

document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes?

And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take.

Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive

roadside signs exempt from the proofreading process?

Although, come to think of it, I actually had my own such experience with a misspelled sign back in high school, when the school district commissioned their annual display saluting the year’s Valedictorian, Salutatorian and other such honors. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan.

Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given.

The Power Of Youth High school and college students from across the globe seeking the opportunity to establish a solid spiritual foundation, develop their leadership skills, and showcase their personal artistic and academic talents will convene upon the School of Mahanaim as it hosts the 3rd International Youth Fellowship (IYF) World Camp in New York from August 18th to 22nd. An estimated 2,000 students from around the U.S. and overseas will travel to Huntington to participate in this special event aimed at addressing current youth problems and developing young people into leaders.

“We’re very excited to welcome the students who are traveling to visit with us from all over the world and have created an exciting program for them,” explains Glen Heil, IYF Public Relations Officer. “The IYF program is designed to help participating students develop essential and effective leadership skills though a comprehensive program focused on leadership training, personal development and real life experiences. Students leave the program with a memorable experience, greater global and cultural awareness and a special musical experience that transcends borders. Our hope is the students will take the skills they learn here home and

use them to help their communities and make an impact in the world today,” Heil continued.

The schedule of events will include educational programs, lectures, cultural activities, and team building. IYF World Camp will also have special guest

leadership speakers, spiritual development sessions, culture exhibitions and performances, a leadership symposium, a 5K Mini Marathon, concerts, and academies including martial arts, foreign languages, photography, and much more. “We live in a culture

where technology has become a strong communication tool making our ability to communicate quicker and easier, but yet young people are finding it more difficult to relate to others in meaningful ways,” said Program Director Terry Henderson. “Through programs such as IYF World Camp, we want to inspire our younger generation to develop strong hearts and open minds so they can communicate effectively and make a significant impact.”

IYF World Camp kicks off and concludes in grand fashion with the Opening Ceremony and Gracias Christmas Cantata. Both events will be held at LIU C.W. Post’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for August 19th at 6:50 p.m. and will feature cultural dances, welcoming addresses from notable Long Island figures, and performances from the world-renowned music group, Gracias Choir. Gracias Christmas Cantata, which is considered the Choir’s signature musical event, is slated for August 22nd at 7:30 p.m. Both events are free to the public.

Kim and John Ragone of Manorville haven’t felt a sense of normalcy in their lives since their 17-yearold daughter Rachel was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare disease in which cancer cells are found in bone or in soft tissue. But with the opening of the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, they have found a place to relax during their daughter’s frequent hospitalizations.

“The room will be a blessing for my family,” Kim Ragone said during ribbon-cutting festivities on August 1st. “This gives us a sense of normalcy, and something as simple as having this dining table to eat at will never be taken for granted…. The living space here gives parents a place to feel comfortable and still be there to support their child.”

Stony Brook Children’s partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMH-LI) to develop the Family Room Program, a family-friendly respite area located on the 11th floor of the hospital.

As Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital, Stony Brook Children’s serves a population of 1.5 million.

The room will provide support for families of more than 7,000 children who are hospitalized each year at Stony Brook Children’s, helping to alleviate their anxiety of having a child in the hospital by keeping them close to their child’s bedside.

“We look forward to today’s events as just the first step in a long-term relationship with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, as we continue to grow Stony Brook Children’s into the finest children’s hospital on Long Island,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “This new facility represents the beginning of a tremendous partnership between the Ronald McDonald House and Stony Brook Children’s,” said Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook School of Medicine, and Physician-

in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s. “By providing a calm, restful environment for families of our patients, the room will improve parents’ ability to advocate for their children. Research shows that a family’s presence helps children heal faster and cope better with the stress of being in the hospital.”

The Family Room offers a fully stocked kitchenette, a dining area, a lounge area with a flat-screen television, laptops with internet access, private showers and lockers, laundry facilities and a transportation program.

A van will transport families to airports, doctors’ appointments and drug stores, and will run errands for the facility.

It will be staffed Ronald McDonald House of Long Island employees, as well as approximately 40 volunteers, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, with services provided at no cost to families of children being cared for at the hospital.

“The Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s is an exciting and muchneeded expansion of our services into Suffolk County,” said Matthew Campo, Executive Director of RMH-LI. “It will enable the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island to serve thousands of additional families, offering comfort and convenience for parents who often have to travel back and forth to the hospital to be with their child.”

The Ronald McDonald House welcomes volunteers to assist with the Family Room and operate the transportation program, as well as committee and advisory board members to recruit volunteers, build awareness, plan events, raise funds and engage in public advocacy. Charitable contributions and donations of supplies are welcome, including pantry items, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies and gift cards. More than 450 people joined Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and members of the Town Council in marking the 60th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Koran War at a breakfast that featured remarks from the Town officials and from the vice consul general from the Korean consulate in New York City.

Noting that he was born in the 1960s, years after the end of the fighting, Vice Consul General Hyung-gil Kim thanked the American troops who served in the war and whose efforts allowed him to grow up in a free and democratic society whose economy had become the 12th largest in the world.

“I want you to know, and I want you to be proud of the fact that I was born and educated in a free democratic country, and I am here and I can be here with you because of the sacrifices 60 years ago,” he said. “Korean War veterans, I owe you much, you are my heroes.”

In their remarks, Supervisor Petrone and Council Members Mark Cuthbertson, Susan A. Berland and Mark Mayoka all noted the importance of remembering what has been termed The Forgotten War and the sacrifices by those who served to preserve our way of life.

“While it has been called the Forgotten War, Huntington has remembered twice. The town has two Korean War memorials,” Supervisor Petrone said.

“Huntington stands tall for its veterans. We work very closely with our veterans’ organizations, and we have not forgotten any conflict, any war. We remember, and we remember the special times such as the signing of this armistice which today brings us together, so that generations that are here and generations to come can remember why they’re alive, why they’re free and why we

stand here as a group of people on Long Island that will never forget what you have done for us.”

Councilman Cuthbertson noted headlines in newspapers about other topics in the news this week, and said, “Wouldn’t we be a much better region, a much better state, a much better country if instead on the front page of the paper they talked about the signing of the armistice in Korea and the brave people who fought in that war? Wouldn’t we be a better country if we talked

about the contributions that all of our veterans have made not only in fighting wars but in building this great country? Wouldn’t we be better nation if we talked about the plight of veterans who come home and don’t get adequate services and honor the people overseas serving us? Wouldn’t we be a better nation if that were the front page of the paper every day this week?

Councilwoman Berland said, “We must never ever, ever allow the sacrifices of the brave men and women who served in the Korean War to be forgotten: those who served and came home and those who gave the

“The sacrifices of the Korean War veterans to defend freedom and peace were not in vain, the blood and sweat shed by the U.S. troops proved to be the prime mover behind the realization of freedom throughout the postwar world,” Councilman Mayoka said. “We take pride in the change of perception that has turned the Korean War from a forgotten war to a war to be remembered.”

Supervisor Petrone presented Mr. Kim with a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capital sent by U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, and Councilwoman Berland pinned a Huntington pin on Mr. Kim’s lapel on behalf of the entire Town Board. The program also included a bell salute as the names were read of all 11 Huntington residents who were killed in the war or who are missing in action The breakfast, which was presented by the Town Board and the Veterans Advisory Board, also included musical numbers performed by the Island Symphony Orchestra, an invocation by the Rev. Chong Kim, senior pastor of the Bible Korean United Methodist Church in Dix Hills and a benediction by Msgr. Thomas Colgan of St. Philip Neri R.C. Church in East Northport.

MARINE OF THE YEAR - There is only one and he is selected at the state convention attended by nearly 6,000 Marine veterans in New York State, representing 72 local detachments. The Marine of the Year award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member of the Marine Corps League. The candidates for this award are nominated by the people who know them best; members of their own detachment.

The recommendations are further screened by a panel of judges made up entirely of past Marines of the Year. Commandant Ober was Detachment Marine of the Year in 2009. The presentation was conducted by National Commandant Jim Tuohy in Albany last month.

Most people know that the Northport community is rich in history, and a simple stroll down Main Street can reveal much of that history to anyone who is observant.

On Wednesday, August 21st, however, Northport Historical Society will offer a new perspective on local history with a tour of the community from the water, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Attendees will board launches at Seymour’s Boatyard, located 63 Bayview Avenue, and enjoy a relaxing cruise while guides share more about the rich waterfront history that has helped shape the community. A cocktail reception with wine, beer, a special signature drink and hors d’oeuvres will follow the

tour.

Reservations for this event, which in the case of rain will be held on August 22nd, are extremely limited and a paid reservation is required to secure your spot. The cost is $50 per person for NHS members, and $60 per person for non-members. Local Studio Performs The North Shore Studio of Dance Competition Team members became stars of their own Disney show on July 2nd when they entertained visitors at Walt Disney World Resort. They traveled from Huntington Station to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to take part in a Disney Performing Arts Program.

Dance groups, choirs,

ensembles and marching bands from around the world apply to perform each year as part of Disney Performing Arts at both the Disneyland and the Walt Disney World Resorts.

Once selected, they are given the opportunity to perform at the resort for an international audience of theme park guests.

SeniorNet Grant Awarded

National Grid Foundation awarded SeniorNet at FSL, L.I. a $9,700 grant to promote the welfare of seniors on Long Island. The Foundation was created to enhance the quality of life in areas where National Grid provides services by creating opportunities for solutions to educational and environmental issues.

Its objective is based on the principle that giving people the tools to build hope is an essential ingredient in the development of individuals, families and

communities.

Through its unique education program, SeniorNet at FSL, L.I. improves the lives of seniors who have not yet discovered 21st century technology and helps the environment by recycling computers. By way of free seminars at public libraries and its mobile learning program, SeniorNet reaches out to communities throughout Long Island including people in senior centers, VA hospital residents and residents of Section 8

Housing. “With SeniorNet’s help, thousands of seniors learn how to bridge the digital divide and connect with family, friends and the wider world of the information age,” said Bob Keller, President, NationalGrid Foundation.

Huntington Awareness Day A parade within the parade – celebrating diversity among the community’s canine population – and honors for two longtime community residents will highlight the 4th Annual Huntington Awareness Day, to be held this year on September 7th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

First held in 2010, Huntington Awareness Day has become an annual tradition, with thousands of people turning out to celebrate the community’s unity, diversity and solidarity.

Once again, bands, floats, vintage cars, service groups and local merchants will join the march through Huntington Station from West Hills Road to Church Street, ending at the fair in the municipal parking lot between Railroad Street and Church Street. The fair will include performances by local artists and booths offering crafts and services.

The parade will honor Alfred A. Sforza, better known to generations of Huntington Station residents as “Freddie the Shoemaker.”

Mr. Sforza took over his late brother-in-law’s shoe repair business in 1934 and operated it, at three different locations on New York Avenue, for more than 75 years. The shop was a gathering place to discuss current events. As the manager of a local softball team, he has been inducted into the Huntington softball Hall of Fame. Mr. Sforza is 99 years old.

Also to be honored is lifelong Huntington

resident Charles Gumbs.

Now 83 years old, Mr. Gumbs is a member of the Huntington Knights of Columbus who worked in the trucking industry and who, as a member of the armed forces stationed in the Middle East in the early 1950s, was a champion middleweight boxer.

The event will also give special recognition to James Conte and Lawrence Kushnick, both of whom passed away in the last year. Mr. Conte represented Huntington Station in the New York State Assembly for 24 years. Mr. Kushnick, an attorney who was the chairman of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, helped organize the fair portion of Huntington Awareness Day. New to the festivities this year is Corky Nightingale’s Woof, Wag and Walk Fashion Show, a paradewithin-the-parade that will see canines come together to celebrate their breed diversity. Spectators are invited to line New York Avenue to see canine “Super Models” with their owners show off their outfits down the “New York Avenue ‘Cat Walk’” wearing a variety of styles which represent their heritage and breed history. (Imagine French poodles wearing berets, German Shepherds wearing lederhosen and Scottish Terriers sporting kilts. Mixed breeds are encouraged to combine outfits.)

“Every year, something gets added to make Huntington Awareness Day even more special,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said, “but what hasn’t changed is the incredible showing of pride Huntingtonians have in their community, making this truly an event not to be missed.”

The parade and fair are organized by the Huntington Awareness Community Partnership.

“We continue to look for sponsors and, of course, we will gratefully accept donations to help us keep all events and rides free of charge,” said cochair Dolores Thompson.

“That way, everyone in the community can enjoy this special day. But we are particularly looking for vendors: people who want to sell arts and crafts, artwork, jewelry, fashion merchandise and other items that might be of interest to fairgoers.”

Go Green Initiative The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Go Green Initiative Team at the joint field office for New York Sandy recovery was recently recognized for its success in implementing sustainable practices. The team won the Green Dream Team Award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Sustainable Practices Award program.

The annual award, which received 17 nominations from federal departments and agencies, recognizes the FEMA

team for outstanding achievement in reaching their sustainability goals as outlined in Executive Order 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance.

A panel of federal sustainability leaders selected the FEMA team because it presented a “superior quality project reflecting the highest ideals of [our] sustainability efforts,” according to Chris Cummiskey, senior sustainability officer for

DHS. “I am impressed with the leadership and teamwork that helped institute sustainability practices into a response and recovery effort.”

Part of the team’s initiatives included encouraging the use of mass transit and issuing fewer rental vehicles, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the 75-person team oversaw a 51 percent reduction in paper usage and took energy conservation measures

like installing light sensors in restrooms at the office.

These sustainability practices are responsible for an estimated savings of $25 million.

“Even as we coordinate response and recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy, we must be good stewards of both the taxpayer’s money and the environment,” said Willie Nunn, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer in New York. “Our Go Green Initiative Team set high goals and executed a strong

sustainability strategy that is now being recognized by DHS. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far.”

The FEMA “Green Dream Team” is now being considered for a 2013 GreenGov Presidential Award, a program led by the White House Council on Environmental Quality that recognizes the efforts of federal agencies to lead sustainability practices.
