Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today announced a new partnership with GetCrashReports.com to provide online access to vehicular accident reports generated by Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs.

Most accident reports will now be available online within 72 hours of a crash, except for fatal crashes and accidents under investigation.

A $5.00 convenience fee will be charged when obtaining crash reports online.

Walk-in public records requests will still be

accepted for the general public at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Police Records Section, located at 360 Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank NY 11980. Accident reports involving fatalities will only be available in person.

“It generally takes 7-10 days to process a standard request for an accident report and many people are eager to obtain this document to assist with insurance claims.

I’m pleased to be able to provide the public with instant access from the website and from the

convenience of a user’s home computer,” stated Sheriff DeMarco.

Users will be prompted to enter various search values to obtain reports, such as the blotter or TRACs number, the name of an individual involved in the accident and the location where it occurred.

Lighting Of The Windmill In conjunction with the ongoing observance of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Shinnecock Hills campus, Stony Brook Southampton will host the traditional holiday lighting of the windmill and reception in Chancellors Hall on Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 7 p.m. The 301 year-old landmark underwent repairs last year following damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011. Now fully repaired, the yoke that supports its blades was cracked, and the windmill had been without its crown.

This year’s Windmill

Lighting program, free and open to the public, will feature tours of the new Marine Sciences Center, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Labs (DPT), and the iconic windmill, named this year a Literary Landmark. The festivities will also include music from the Stony Brook University Pep Band, an appearance by Seawolves mascot Wolfie, seasonal refreshments, a caricaturist, balloon artist, and crafts for children.

Following the Windmill Lighting and reception, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) will present

a lecture on the New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms and Emergencies (NYS RISE) in Duke Lecture Hall at 7:30 p.m. The presentation will highlight the goals, objectives, and activities of NYS RISE and will examine the role that SoMAS will play in ensuring that NY’s coastal communities and ecosystems are strengthened to protect their health and viability in the event of future storm devastation.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips

With Black Friday quickly approaching, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to provide some safety tips that will help everyone have a safe shopping experience.

“Whenever people feel stressed and rushed, they can be more vulnerable to crime. These tips offer some basic guidelines to follow to be safer while holiday shopping,” stated DeMarco.

Parking Lots: • When walking through parking lots, be aware of your surroundings.

• Always park where there is plenty of light between your car and the store.

• Keep your car locked and have your keys in hand before you go to your car.

• Before leaving your

vehicle, make sure there isn’t anything of value in sight, including cell phones, GPS units and holiday purchases.

• Parking lots are typically very crowded at the start of the holiday season. Use patience when looking for parking and pay extra attention when pulling out of a parking spot.

Shopping: • Expect long lines and be patient. Enter stores safely; there is no item worth rushing through a crowd and risking injury.

• Shop with others; there is safety in numbers.

• Don’t leave your purse unattended in your cart, even for a few seconds.

• Don’t carry large amounts of money. Keep money in a front pocket.

• Only carry one or two

credit cards and make sure you secure them after use.

• If shopping online, stick with established retailers and retailers from our local community with a presence online.

Shopping With Children: • Always supervise your children in public places. Accompany young children to the restroom.

• Remind children to remain in the same area in the event they lose sight of you.

• Never dress children in clothing that displays their first or last names.

Athletes Of The Month Brittany Ferrante had an exciting fall golf season. She and her teammates (all guys) worked hard at the game they love. They competed well and will now take the winter off before team individuals compete in the county championships next May. The highlight of Brittany’s fall season wasn’t found on the fairways and greens of Whitman’s home course, Sunken Meadow, but rather over 2,000 miles away at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, playing in the 2013 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, teamed up with none other than golfing legend Rocco Mediate. “It was so much fun playing with Rocco,” said Brittany. “Pebble Beach is such a beautiful place.”

“Golf is such a great sport to play,” continued Brittany. “You learn so much about life and people. It has helped shape who I am today.”

Brittany is also active in the ”First Tee” program. “The First Tee of Metropolitan New York [TFTMNY] is very proud of Brittany,” said Barry McLaughlin, TFTMNY executive director. “She is an outstanding participant in the First Tee. She has worked extremely hard to develop her golf game and is an exceptional role model who has continued to give back to the First Tee.” “I’m very honored to receive this award,” said Brittany,

who was to also receive a Huntington town proclamation.

The lights dim. The music simmers.

And the roof of the theater gets ready to lift off into the stratosphere as a company of 42 topflight singers, dancers, and musicians take the stage to create what New York Magazine calls “an apotheosis of pure joy.”

It all happens at After Midnight, the new Broadway phenomenon that catapults the greatest music of Duke Ellington and Harlem’s Golden Age into the 21st century.

And there in the center of the 17-piece band, hand-selected by jazz legend and After Midnight producer Wynton Marsalis, is our very own Andy Farber, Walt Whitman class of 1987. Farber enjoyed the

spotlight with us last fall when he was inducted into the biennial Walt Whitman Hall of Fame.

Farber is an awardwinning jazz composer, arranger, and saxophonist and has spent years performing with the likes of Jon Hendricks and Wynton Marsalis. Farber has written arrangements for people like Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Shirley Horn, Bobby Short, Ann Hampton Calloway, Frankie Laine, Alan Harris, Cynthia Scott, Billy Stritch, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz, Joe Piscopo, Joe Cocker, George Benson, Robert Downey Jr, Kevin Spacey, Wynona Judd, Fantasia, Ernestine Anderson, Vanessa Williams, and

Roseanna Vitro.

Farber’s arrangements have been performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Philly Pops Orchestra, the Boca Pops Orchestra, and several symphony orchestras throughout Europe.

Farber has been a guest conductor of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, and in 2004 he made his symphonic conducting debut with the Bronx Arts Ensemble. In April 2010, Farber was the guest music director for Jazz @ Lincoln Center’s “The Music of Fats Waller”. His work as an arranger, conductor and instrumentalist can be heard on numerous recordings, commercials, and television/film scores.

The following week, against Newfield, he was asked to play quarterback, and he eagerly took on the new role.

“Growing up around my older cousins, I always had a football in my hand,” said the Whitman junior.

As a freshman, Jaron helped lead the Wildcat JV team to their first ever 8-0 undefeated season. Then, as a sophomore, Jaron had a key role in Whitman’s big varsity homecoming win, banishing a decade-long homecoming dry spell. “With football, something exciting is always happening that makes me want more,” said Jaron, who has decided to take this year off from playing basketball to concentrate on his studies.

After he heals from a bruising football season, Jaron will be back on the turf with a lacrosse stick in his hand. “I love the spirit and enthusiasm here at Whitman,” said Jaron. “We like to show support for our classmates playing on other teams, and they in turn support us. At Whitman, when you show some respect, it comes right back to you.” Congratulations Jaron!

Sheriff Honored With Award

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was recently selected to receive the Caron Legal Professional/Uniformed Public Service Award.

This award recognizes an individual who has done an outstanding job in either the legal or public service fields by combating the fight against chemical dependency through due process of the law, prevention and education.

He was nominated for the award by Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, the Executive Director of the Long Island Council on Drug and

Alcoholism.

DeMarco, who accepted the award during a ceremony last week held at Adelphi University, thanked the Caron Center and Dr. Reynolds for their support, and stated “Our success is a credit to the many officers, community groups and volunteers who help us reach hundreds of young people each year with our prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.”

Sheriff DeMarco has devoted significant resources to helping combat teen drug use through prevention

programs, such as “Test, Don’t Guess” and the “S.T.O.P.P.E.D. Program,” as well as by connecting criminally drug-involved youth to appropriate treatment programs during and following a period of incarceration.

The Sheriff’s Office maintains a list of its specialized prevention programs on its website at www.suffolksheriff.com.

Many of these programs are available to community groups, schools and for public events.

Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle.

Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach.

Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel.

Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!).

Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle.

Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe.

They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. Smaller pets are best suited for pet car seats. The car seat is secured in the back seat using a seat belt and your pet is secured in the car seat with a safety harness.

In addition to it’s safety features, a pet car seat will prop up your smaller pet, allowing them to better look out the window. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet.

Safe and Comfortable: Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your

Secure Pet Friendly Accommodations: If you’re planning a long journey and will need to stay in lodging on the way to your final destination, be sure to secure these pet friendly accommodations before you hit the road.

Map out where you’ll be spending the night and arrange for lodging along the way. This is a crucial element of pet travel that is not taken seriously enough. The reality is that hundreds of pets are injured or even killed each year because they are allowed free reign in cars, trucks, RVs, and SUVs. Even more real is the toll in human life and property damage caused when an “enthusiastic” animal distracts a driver, leading to an accident.

Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe when traveling in your vehicle. It’s important to familiarize your pet with the vehicle restraint of choice weeks or months before traveling so that they are comfortable.

Temporary ID Tag: In the unfortunate event that your pet runs off while you’re traveling. A temporary identification tag, along with a photo of your pet will help ensure their safe return. Attach a temporary ID tag to your pet’s collar in addition to their permanent tag.

Include the address and phone number of where you’ll be staying along with your cell phone number and perhaps your email address. This is one of the most important aspects of traveling with your pet, but also one of the most overlooked. In addition, bring along a current photo of your pet.

A photograph will make it easier for others to help you find your lost pet.

Packing Essentials: When packing for your pet include an ample supply of your pet’s food.

Don’t rely on stopping along the way to pick up their food or picking it up at your final destination.

Their particular brand of food may not be readily available and it is not advisable to introduce your pet to a new brand of food while traveling.

Traveling with your pet can be a wonderful and bonding experience or a not so pleasant one. It’s all a matter of proper planning and preparation.

Your first decision is whether to bring your pet along with you on your trip. Not all pets are suited for travel. While it may be very tempting to bring your pet with you, keep in mind that not all pets are happy travelers. Things to consider include your pet’s temperament, any physical impairments, or if your pet suffers from an illness. If you’re uncertain whether your pet is suited for travel, you may want to consult with your veterinarian.

If you determine that your pet is up for the trip, then following some common sense tips will help to ensure that your Thanksgiving Day travels with your furry friend is enjoyable for both of you!

Pre-Travel Preparation Healthy Start: The last thing you need is a sick pet when traveling. This means a visit to the vet for a medical checkup and to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with all necessary vaccinations.

The veterinarian can also issue a health certificate for your pet. If you and your pet will be traveling across state lines, you must obtain a recent health certificate and a certificate of rabies vaccination. If your plans include traveling with your pet from the United States to Canada, you will need to bring along a certificate issued by a veterinarian that clearly identifies the animal and certifies that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 month period. of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!?

Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious!

But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones.

For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year.

For spending quality time with those who mean the most.

It is time, time we cannot get enough of.

However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis.

Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses!

For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class.

This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down.

These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over.

These students have done it, they have completed their journey.

Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip!

Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

drops a single letter grade, the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid.

This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career.

The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall.

This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic.

So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

ALL Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leaders are required to complete the BSA course in Youth Protection. Suffolk County Council requires renewing this training every two years. The course being presented is the Adult Leader Training (programs for youth and families were touched upon briefly but different training sessions and are intended to be presented at the unit level).

Team Walt Whitman Wildcats rose close to $500 for the 6th Annual Long Island Run for the Warriors in Lindenhurst on Sunday November 10th.

Coach Rory Sherman, a Physical Education teacher at Silas Wood started the team. Team members are a tight knit group of supporters who include South Huntington teachers: Rory Sherman, Rob Conroy, Maria Rodriguez, Grace DiNorca, and Laura Van Tassell.

Joining our teachers were students, and family and

friends throughout Long Island.

Hope For The Warriors® is the sponsor of this Annual Long Island Run For The Warriors®. This race is dedicated to the men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, their families, and families of the fallen. It is a celebration of their strength and resolve and a promise to continue restoring self, family, and hope. By uniting the entire community, military and civilian alike, this unique event embraces wounded warriors and their families

in the shared belief that there is hope beyond recovery. All proceeds from the race will benefit wounded warriors and their families through our many Hope For The Warriors® programs.

Walt Whitman’s Senior Class Advisor Diane L. Zamow is happy to report that the Fall Blood Drive, run by the senior class and the New York Blood Center, was an overwhelming success.

30 blood drive captains, listed below, registered a record 144 students who donated 117 pints of blood.

This was collected in 6 hours averaging about 20 students an hour!

The captains played a

crucial role in helping collect blood and save lives.

The captains provided care, attention, and assistance to the many dedicated blood donors who rolled up their sleeves to give life. The donors gave generously of themselves and helped save lives in the New York area.

The Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection Training (applicable to all Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts) for the volunteer scouting leaders was presented on October 26th at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island, held during the recent Matinecock District’s annual Webelos Woods/Webelos to Scout Transition camping experience.

Because of the great concern the Boy Scouts of America has the safety of all Scouts and for the problem of child abuse in our society, the youth protection program was developed to safeguard

Matinecock District’s Boy Scout Training Chair Marc Nathanson was the facilitator/ training instructor for the Youth Protection Seminar at this session.

While their troop’s youth members were participating in the annual Matinecock District’s annual Webelos Woods and Webelos to Scout Transition, two volunteer Scouters of Troop 309 (Dix Hills) attended the Youth Protection Training session at the district’s HQ tent. Matinecock District’s Training Chair/Scouting Volunteer Marc Nathanson presented videos, discussion groups, and lists of various resource materials to these newly trained leaders.

The Boy Scout Leaders who participated and were trained or had renewed their training in Youth Protection at the Webelos Woods were: Troop 309 (Dix Hills)’s Assistant Scoutmaster Charlie Mock and Troop Advancement Chair David Gillispie.

Robotics Invitational On Saturday, November 16th, high school robotics teams met at Half Hollow Hills High School West for a postseason robotics competition, sponsored by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. The competition was designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs on students, schools and their communities. Residents, teachers and administrators from the Half Hollow Hills School District and other Long Island school districts showed support for SBPLI and the robotics competition by attending the event.

Elks Memorial Day The month of December is a festive time and traditionally, a chance to spend valuable time with our families and friends and remember those who have made an impact on our life.

One special organization, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, holds a memorial ceremony every December known as “Elks Memorial Day,” a special service which recognizes and honors their own members posthumously to ensure they are never forgotten. The service is approximately 45 minutes long and takes place throughout the country on the first Sunday of December, which this year is December 1st.

According to the Huntington Elks Lodge, the ceremony is a means to honor the memory of absent members who have

passed during the previous year. As part of their own ceremony this year, the Huntington Elks have planned an inspirational evening which will include a dinner and several special tributes throughout the evening.

The tributes include the reading of names of each Elks member who has passed during the previous year. For each name which is read, a tall, white candle is extinguished. At the end of the ceremony, a final candle is extinguished to honor the “memory of our departed veterans.”

“The Elks organization is rich with tradition. Every Elk is a member of our family and each member is an important part of the overall organization.

While each candle is extinguished as part of the memorial ceremony, the eternal flame of their memories will always burn

brightly in our hearts,” explains Peter Demidovich, Huntington Elks Exalted Ruler.

The Northport Public Library is proud to host the “I Matter” Community Art Project. This townwide Social Impact Art campaign empowers teens by providing a public venue for them to be seen and heard. Students photograph one another and write why they matter in the world. Collections of inspiring faces and stirring words are then displayed in public spaces as a reminder to community members that they too matter.

It’s a public declaration

of self-worth and a compelling invitation for community support.

The “I matter” project is a vital facet of the Just Like Me Program, a drug prevention program for Long Island teens. Just Like Me is a call to action to educate, inspire and motivate teens and young adults to make better decisions and to make a positive difference, not only in their lives, but also in the lives of loved ones and their community. The exhibit will be on display

at the Northport Public Library beginning January 2014.

To bring this vision to life, a team of Northport students has created a Kickstarter fundraising campaign that must be funded by December 12th, 2013.

Moving Presentation In an effort to raise awareness of the effects that bullying has on students and their families, Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District hosted Ryan’s Story, an antibullying program based upon the life and death of 13 year-old Ryan Halligan.

Ryan was a middle school student from Vermont

who committed suicide in 2003 due to depression and constant bullying.

In an emotional presentation that included a slideshow of Ryan throughout the years, Ryan’s father, John Halligan, recounted the story of his son’s life and the ridicule he endured.

In separate sessions for students and parents, he

discussed the devastating impact his son’s suicide has had on his family, and the power of forgiveness.

“Ryan was so focused on the people who didn’t like him that he forgot all about those people in his life who loved him,” said Mr. Halligan. “I assure every one of you in this room, you are loved beyond belief.”

Experiencing Native Culture Students at Harley Avenue Primary and James H. Boyd Intermediate schools in the Elwood Union Free School District recently experienced Journeys Into American Indian Territory, an interactive educational program that brought the culture of Native American

civilization to life.

Students had the opportunity to get a glimpse of what life was like for a child of the Plains Indians. The program also examined how the tribes’ roles were defined and how they respected the animals and land around them.

Students explored

a variety of shelters, such as the traditional longhouse, as well as a museum of authentic artifacts including musical instruments, utensils and Native American toys. Also on display were animal cloths and skins used for protection from the elements.

The Mercy College Mavericks women’s lacrosse coach, Dawn Anselmin, now entering her second year as head coach, has aggressively recruited in the off-season and is looking to jump on the winning side of last year’s 500 season. Playing in the NCAA Division II East Coast Conference, the Mavericks have recently signed Walt Whitman’s All-County senior Nicole Kleet.

Nicole, an all-round athlete who has in the past played soccer, basketball, and volleyball, has been

focusing solely on lacrosse as of late and is looking forward to leading her Lady Wildcats this coming spring. “Nicole Kleet has been a vital part of the Whitman girls’ lacrosse program for the last 5 years,” said Varsity Head Coach John Labate.

As the Wildcats leading goals scorer for the last two years, Nicole has made a tremendous impact on the field. “Nicole’s heart and intensity have earned her recognition from her teammates and respect from her opponents,” said Coach Labate. “This

will be her second year as captain, and we are expecting a lot of Nicole and her teammates.” The Lady Wildcats are coming off a successful 10-5 season in 2013 and hope to make another playoff run in 2014.

Please come out and support Nicole and the 2014 Lady Wildcat lacrosse team during their spring 2014 season, which gets underway on March 25th at Connetquot. The team’s first home game is March 27th against Hauppauge.

Thunderbirds Land

Countrywood students were treated to a fantastic performance today, teaching them about American Indian culture that weaved history, dance, and song. “This is how we keep our culture alive and how we identify with it,” said Louis Mofsie, director of the New York-based Thunderbird American Indian Dancers.

“I think that when they teach about American Indian history in many schools it’s always in the past tense, and we are

here to let students know that the American Indian culture is still very much alive,” said Mr. Mofsie, who is half Hoppe (Arizona) and half Winnebago (Nebraska).

Joining Mr. Mofsie was Allan Star, from the Lenape tribe in New Jersey, and Marie McKinney Ponce, a Cherokee from the mountains of North Carolina. “All dances have a history,” said Mr. Mofsie.

“There were traditional dances for men and women, as well as ones with more

unique names, like “shawl dance” and “fancy dance.”

Each dance has its own history, which I talk about with the Countrywood students before we perform that dance.”

The PTA Cultural Arts Committee who works with Peggy Low of the Huntington Cultural Arts Council and their JOURNEY Arts-inEducation program brought the Thunderbirds to Countrywood.

Best Shopping Experience

Maplewood thirdgraders from Ms. Dawes and Ms. Labate’s classes visited Best Yet Market to shop for those in need in the Maplewood community and came away with a whole lot more.

With each child’s family donating $5 and more, the students shopped for food items to create Thanksgiving food baskets that will be donated in their community. The students got to exercise their critical thinking skills when deciding how to get the most for their money, staying within a budget, what items were a good sale, math skills to

determine best pricing, and understanding weights and measures.

During the trip, the children also learned the value of money as they shop for these items and took joy in doing something special for others in need during this holiday season. Each team of 4 to 5 students was assisted by a couple of volunteer parents and, armed with mini shopping carts, worked their way up and down the isles completing their check list.

Each team checked-out their groceries and headed for the bus back to school.

Adopting A Pet: How To Choose Your Best Match (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love.

For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet.

“We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would

be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home.

Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house?

Do you have a big backyard?

Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt.

2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise.

3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with

children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house.

4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Adoption is a commitment for the pet’s entire life.

One easy way to find adoptable pets and shelters is by searching PetSmart Charities’ adoptable pet locator. You can enter criteria such as age, breed and size of the pet you want.

Most pets available through adoption are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and licensed, and are often microchipped for a very affordable adoption fee.
