service organizations to work together to assure and improve health in communities they serve. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities.

More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, community-based organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities.

LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a result, LIHC’s efforts will focus on these priorities.

LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well. Health care providers - hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types - work together to provide coordinated health care.

The website – http://nshc. org/long-island-healthcollaborative/ - is just the first step in achieving this goal. A bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and builtenvironment policy changes at the local level.

of all Long Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments, dozens of communitybased organizations, and academic institutions.

These partners joined together in early 2013 to combine their expertise in a streamlined and cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. The website is a component of their work. The userfriendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well.

The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties are partnering in such a comprehensive way.

Public health and public affairs experts from the region’s hospitals, as well as health department leaders and representatives from social service organizations and public health specialists from colleges, comprise the collaborative.

“Health care is a reactive industry . . . we respond to patients’ needs when they are sick and injured,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “What is invigorating about this effort is that it is proactive.”

The group initially formed in February 2013 in response to enhanced state and federal government regulations that require all health care providers, local health departments, and community-based

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work?

Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers.

The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for.

But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it.

Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection?

Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC).

The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bicounty effort to help Long Islanders improve their health.

A key component of LIHC’s work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well.

Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event.

NSHC is the agency that represents Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted that this groundbreaking endeavor is exactly what the state health department is calling for in its effort to promote population health and integrated, coordinated health care services throughout New York’s local communities.

Health commissioners for both Nassau and Suffolk counties - Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken respectively – echoed Dr. Zucker’s comments.

They agreed that the prevalence of chronic disease is widespread in both counties and a bi-county initiative like LIHC will help raise awareness and connect Long Islanders to the appropriate care and services.

I will never understand why the bond between brothers is so strong.

My little brother and I are best friends. We are study partners. We are co-workers. We are teammates for flagfootball. I am his mentor, and he is my inspiration.

For fifteen years, my brother has had an unparalleled influence on my life, and I on his. We are cast from the same mold, and nothing could ever come between us. Some call us inseparable, but I just call us family.

My little brother is the reason why I strive for

greatness. I want to set a positive example for him. I want him to strive for greatness.

My brother is always there when I need him, and knows just how to cheer me up after a rough day. Similarly, whenever my brother needs help, he knows just who to call. I will always have his back, just like he will always have mine.

There has never, and will never, be a time where I put another person before my little brother. Since we were babies, our parents have been instilling in

us the idea that we are the world’s greatest tag-team. If we work together, there are few forces that can overcome us. Our relationship is stronger than any other that I have ever witnessed.

I will never understand why we finish each other’s sentences or why we cannot go a day without seeing each other. I will never know why he acts the way he acts, or why I do. I will never understand how two separate beings can be so close. I know we are brothers, and that is all that matters.

Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 2729 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which has also sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past fifteen years.

“This proves to be an exciting time for the students and the mentors when they learn the name and the rules of the game for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “We were very proud to present the FRC kickoff as we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Regional FRC in March.”

During the 2014 season, 49 teams from Long Island, New York City, the surrounding area and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional FRC on March 27-29, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 24-27 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.

“The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Madarash. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.”

Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.”

The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match.

Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field.

In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally.

SBPLI representatives, team mentors ,volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program.

After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components – and only limited instructions.

Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge.

Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children that are medically fragile in the community had a holiday party. This celebration is for the children and parents of Angela’s House sponsored

by We Care For Kids on both December 7th and 8th 2013.

Each year, Arthur Krantz and PRC Industry’s helps Angela’s House throw a beautiful holiday party for over 800 people. Arthur Krantz is committed, but passionate, in his quest to provide a fantastic celebration for Angela’s House children and their families.

He is indeed

the ‘Angel’ of the Angels of Industry, as dubbed by Newsday in 1999.

He is the founder of We Care for Kids Inc., a not for profit organization. His belief that ‘good will’ is contagious, is evident in his spirit and practice. His foundation is dedicated to providing experiences to be cherished by the children and families who find themselves in challenging life situations. While he selflessly coordinates, and produces the most poignant memories to be cherished by participants and volunteers alike, he remains exuberant about every moment of the process. With crown on

his head, ‘King’ Arthur is truly a man of men, who graciously acknowledges the little angels in his community.

Celebrities and Athletes alike came together to show their support for Angela’s House. Comedian and Actor Gilbert Gottfried; Former Major League Baseball players and New York Mets, Frank Catalanotto and Ed Hearn; Film Director, Jeff Lieberman; Actor,

Burt Young; and more have all joined Angela’s House in their efforts to raise awareness in the community for this very important cause. There was a live auction that ran on eBay through Friday at 6 p.m. loaded with sports and music memorabilia, hotel stays and pledges to donate money directly to Angela’s House during the holiday season.

Together with an on air auction and contributions received from listeners, Angela’s House raised over 10,000 dollars for the children and families they care for, but most

importantly, raised invaluable awareness for the cause.

Senator John Flanagan recently presented the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to ten year-old Kyle Geringer of Smithtown for his efforts in alerting his Smithtown neighbors about a chimney fire at their home.

Senator Flanagan joined Kyle and his family in his fifth-grade class at

Accompsett Elementary School, which is taught

by Mr. Scott Miller, for a special ceremony organized by Principal Jeanne Kull-Minarik.

Kyle was in his home on November 23rd when he saw flames rising out of his neighbor’s chimney. He wisely informed his parents about the situation, who

then contacted their neighbors to warn them of the unknown danger. Due to Kyle’s quick-thinking action, the Smithtown Fire Department was immediately contacted and arrived on the scene to put out the fire before it could spread to the rest of the home.

NEWEST EAGLE HONOREE - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta honored Thomas James (TJ) Passaro of Boy Scout Troop 125 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor on January 11th, 2014. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, TJ built a stone border around three areas at the Little Shelter Rescue Center in Huntington, whereby he provided a finished, landscaped look and filled it with top soil and shrubbery to enhance the shelter’s overall appearance.

(CRMA). In 2012 he retired from his role as President of the Long Island Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors where he had also served as SVP and Treasurer.

Mr. Garbarino is also very involved in the community, most notably assisting the East Northport Chamber of Commerce with their East Northport Festival as well as being involved in the annual “I Did The Grid Memorial Run,” honoring Marine Cpl. According to East’s science research teacher, Ms. Maria Zeitlin, “Yongpeng sought to answer the question as to how to best convert Big Data into recognizable

pieces of information.

There is an enormous amount of information that is contained within seismic recordings near ocean surf. Somewhere buried within the values are pertinent telling events that could be predictive of surf conditions such as dangerous riptides.”

On January 11th, the Harlem Wizards battled the Hauppauge Eagles teachers and staff all-star team in a rematch of their 2013 spectacular battle, with Special Referee John “the Mouth” Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, was specifically enlisted to insure that law, order and of course comedy matched last year’s momentous battle.

The Harlem Wizards, founded over 50 years ago by Howie Davis, is a family owned and operated travelling basketball team that travels nationwide combining comedy and high flying, rim rattling dunks taking on local teams to help with local fundraising efforts.

The gifts that the Boy Scouts and many of their parents wrapped were handed to 3 and 4 year-old children at the Brentwood Head Start, where many of these children live in shelters, as gifts from Santa during the

I know everyone is very busy, especially at this time of year, and I know there are many important things that go on in your lives on a daily basis. Therefore I want to acknowledge that for you to give up a few hours of your time to help out kids that you don’t even know - you are amazing, and I am a better person for knowing each one of you.”

The Math Honor Society of Smithtown High School West, under the leadership of students Ryan Lanzetta and Michael Doxey have taken the initiative to bring Computer Science to the middle school students in the district.Their motive for launching this after school program is to promote the importance of Computer Science.

The Society hopes to spark an interest in students who would otherwise be averse to Computer Science programming. It is the Math Honor Society’s hope that their interest will lead them to pursue computer programming as a hobby, a college major, or even a future career.

It is a known fact that today’s society has become increasingly dependent on technology.

Therefore, knowledge of

programming is becoming more and more relevant in a varying number of fields. However, given the obvious importance, there is a decided lack of interest amongst students and the Math Honor Society is determined to change that fact. They felt that the Computer Science Education Week (www. csedweek.org) December 9th through December 15th, 2013, which is a national effort to expand Computer Science education, was the perfect time to embark on their project.

With the help of Math Honor Society advisors, Ms. Michele Bramanti and Mr. Steven Robinson, as well as the support of Accompsett Middle School’s Assistant Principal Daniel McCabe, Ryan and Mike were able to fill a computer lab with enthusiastic 8th graders

who had committed to attend once a week for the next fourteen weeks.

The students were introduced to www. codeacademy.com, an interactive, online coding environment, and they were immediately engaged, each being clearly intent on learning. The software itself is adaptive, which allowed students of all ability levels to progress at their own pace and find success. Questions were answered and encouragement provided

Everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed the experience and all left with a new sense of accomplishment and eagerness to return.

On November 9th, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Police Hispanic Society of Suffolk County (P.H.S.S.C) teamed up with the Peanut Butter Gangs Hospitality Too soup kitchen at St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood.

Boy Scouts from Troop 343 (Hauppauge) participated that day, assisting with serving food to the poor and needy as well as joining the P.H.S.S.C. in donating food and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Catherine’s paper titled, Phylogenetic and Dietary Signals in the Dentition and Mandible of Carnivora: A Geometric Morphometric Approach.

Catherine has been a student in the Science Research Program at HS West for the last three years where she has worked closely with research teacher Dr. Joanne Figueiredo.

Catherine conducted her Intel research project

in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University under the direction of graduate student, Matthew Borths, and Dr. Erik Seiffert.

For this study, she analyzed 27,000 specimens from the teeth and jaws of 101 different species of Carnivora with markedly different dietary preferences. Her study is aimed at determining whether phylogeny or type of diet plays a more significant role in the structure of the teeth and the jaws of animals.

Catherine’s work will be

published in the Journal of Mammalian Evolution and she will be the first author on the manuscript.

Catherine is passionate about science and has become a leader and a role model among the science research students in the high school. The most amazing thing about her is that she maintains a child-like joy for all of her scientific discoveries. In addition to her academic talents, Catherine is a valued member of West’s Academic Quiz Bowl Team and a very active part of the Math Honor Society and Hobby Club.

Scholarship Breakfast Set

Stony Brook College’s Ice Hockey Team, the Seawolves held its annual fundraising game for Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children that are medically fragile in the community on Sunday, January 12th at the Rinx in Hauppauge.

Each year, the team holds this event to support Angela’s House and raise awareness for the organization in the

community by inviting residents to an afternoon of hockey. Rocky, the team’s mascot, was on hand to welcome all the guests to this wonderful event.

The children of Angela’s House were personally escorted on the ice by the ice girls for the opening ceremony and in between periods. Each year the children of Angela’s House have such a fantastic time.

This year the event honored the memory of

Bonnie Farrell, an Angela’s House nursing supervisor, who was tragically taken from them in December.

Angela’s House cannot express its gratitude enough for the support of Stony Brook Seawolves and the Ice Girls.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) along with Farmingdale State College Foundation will present its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. The event will be held February 14th at the new Campus Center at Farmingdale State College, starting at 8:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “We Love Robotics!”

All proceeds will go to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship.

The scholarship, which was created in 2009, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who will receive $1,000 for each semester he/she attends the college.

It is a tradition for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to Mr. Breithut’s love and admiration for

students when he was alive. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island.

Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach.

They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach.

Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand.

Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more.

As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends.

Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean...
