Federation of Organizations hosted a Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, May 3rd at the Huntington Hilton. The event served to honor senior volunteers from the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs and was well attended by over 300 guests. The day was celebrated with a gala luncheon and dancing.

The Foster Grandparent Program connects local senior citizen volunteers with special needs children in schools, Head Start centers, preschools and other community locations. Currently, over 170 Foster Grandparents serve as mentors and tutors to over 2100 children daily throughout Suffolk County.

Long Island MacArthur Airport is once again ready for takeoff as the host of a 5K Run to benefit our Long Island veterans on Saturday, June 1st. This popular race/walk has provided runners with a unique backdrop on the first Saturday in June with a race course that includes portions of MacArthur Airport’s runways and taxiways.

Last June, a recordbreaking number of runners - more than 2,000 strong - pounded the pavement despite inclement weather, and the event raised more than $100,000 in support of the Long Island 9-11 Veterans, a charitable organization that assists Long Island veterans returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan while they make the strenuous transition from military to civilian life.

A Suffolk County Police helicopter was dispatched and hovered over the man as the Kings Park Fire Department launched the rescue boat. Kings Park firefighter Dan Hagstrom jumped into the water to hold the man and get him into the boat as his colleagues, Andrew Strain and Greg Smith, helped to pull him into the boat. “Due to the quick actions by all concerned parties, the man was rescued and treated for hypothermia,” said Suffolk

County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick.

Suffolk County Legislator John Kennedy added that, “Our Suffolk County Police Department officers consistently demonstrate skill, bravery and expertise gained from hundreds of hours of training. These officers and volunteer firefighters once again saved a life that would have otherwise been lost. Congratulations on a job well done!”

Great Hollow Middle School once again came together to celebrate the life of Nicholas Dagger, a special member of our Great Hollow community.

Students, teachers, families and friends gathered together to participate in the third annual Dodge Through Hoops for Heart.

The Physical Education Department kicked off the evening with both students and teachers participating

in organized basketball and dodge ball activities.

With the donations from families, friends, and the sale of over 400 tickets to students and community members, a check for $5,512 was presented to the American Heart Association in honor and memory of Nicholas. Over the past three years Great Hollow has raised over fifteen thousand dollars.

With these donations,

the American Heart Association has in turn given the event basketballs, playground balls, and jump ropes.

The past two years the Dagger’s have decided to donate these items to the Timothy Hill Ranch in Riverhead. The Ranch is a safe haven for hundreds of children during a desperate time of abuse, neglect, and crisis.

Open Artist Chosen Long Island native, artist Elaine Faith Thompson was chosen to paint and design the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship commemorative poster.

The U.S. Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th-30th, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton.

The archival, faderesistant lithograph poster is now available, on www.

The original painting is also available for purchase.

Thompson is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the

Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she worked all winter to complete the painting. It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career. She is currently handling shipping, packaging and framing for the poster.

Thompson has also painted the commemorative painting of “THE BLACK

COURSE – Bethpage, Over the Years, N.Y.” in 2002 which was hanging in Governor Pataki’s office in Albany and won a “Best on Long Island” award. Her collection also includes posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. The 2009 painting also won two Best On Long

Island awards.

Elaine Thompson’s golf art is often seen in public places on Long Island and all over the world.

Thompson’s painting of the “Lady Golfer”, is a painting of a woman, at Timber Point Country Club, Great River, N.Y. That golfer is dressed in late 1800s attire, with the Great South Bay of Long Island in the background.

Thompson is known for her extraordinary ability to

paint very fine details that look like photographs. Also included in her collection are other paintings of Long Island scenes (in the VanGogh style), featuring the Montauk and Fire Island Lighthouses, The Big Duck, the Smithtown Bull and the Riverhead Riverside.

What Would You Do...

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course.

And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really.

Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really?

Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot?

For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life.

Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no?

Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

The Suffolk County SPCA (Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals) recently visited Mrs. Amato’s fifth grade class at Accompsett Elementary School.

Chief Ray Gross talked about their role and

responsibility in the community to protect and promote the welfare of all animals.

The SPCA goes to investigate animal abuse cases and rescues animals.

Chief Roy Gross introduced Justin, a therapy dog, who

visits nursing homes, hospitals and centers to visit people in need. He also went over the different roles dogs can play such as Therapy dogs, Herding dogs, Police dogs and Search & Rescue dogs.

Horseshoe Tournament On Saturday, May 4th, the Smithtown Recreation Department held its annual Singles and Doubles Spring Horseshoe Tournament at Brady Park. This year, they had 34 single horseshoe participants and 15 doubles teams participate in the event.

The winner of the Singles Tournament was

Matt Ryder with a record of 10-1, beating John Kassay, with a record of 5-2, for the championship. Keith Leveling finished in 3rd place.

Husband and wife team John and Debby Kassay were the winners of the Doubles competition.

John & Debby finished with a record of 5-0. They

defeated Keith Leveling & Chris Malandra to capture the championship.

Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who helped make this event so successful.

SPRING BRUNCH - Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick was a guest at the annual spring brunch of the Fort Salonga Civic Association. The event was attended by 120 residents and guests. A highlight of the brunch was the performance of several classical pieces by a string quartet composed of instructors from the Grace Music School in Fort Salonga.

Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone declared Fire Island open for business for the summer of 2013 season. He was joined by the Mayor of Ocean Beach, James Mallot, Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, and members of “Revive FI”, the Fire Island grassroots business association, to provide updates on the state of Fire Island’s

economic recovery for Summer 2013.

Just over six months ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated the remote 32-mile-long barrier island leaving residents and businesses with the challenge of trying to restore normalcy before the summer months.

The restoration effort was forced to begin immediately, as local

businesses rely entirely upon tourism spending for its survival during a slim 12-week summer vacation season. This restoration effort included an unprecedented debris removal process coordinated across multiple municipalities, government agencies, and local community organizations.

GOLDEN GAMES - Ten residents from St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park participated in the 10th Annual Suffolk County Golden Games held at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. Teams from twelve nursing facilities across the county competed in five different events at the all-day athletic competition. St. Johnland’s team, which practices for many months to develop competitive skills, took part in team and individual contests and brought home a bronze medal in volleyball.

EARTH DAY - First graders at Accompsett Elementary School recently celebrated Earth Day. They have been studying a unit on Earth Day in class and talking about the importance of this special day. Stations were set-up for garden decoration crafts, planting flowers in bio-degradable flower pots and other “green” activities.

CELEBRATING MOTHER EARTH - Dogwood Elementary School fourth graders participated in a cooperative group project to celebrate Earth Day. Together all classes worked to create slogans and design grocery bags to promote Earth Day to Trader Joe’s customers. Bags were displayed and distributed at Trader Joe’s in Lake Grove on Earth Day, Monday, April 22nd.

Great Hollow Seventh Grade Student Council recently sponsored a Dancing With The Teachers fundraiser. Students filled the gym and were treated to an evening filled with fantastic performances from the Great Hollow faculty. The event raised over $1,000, which will be donated to Lincoln Orens Middle School in the Island

Park School District. The money raised will help with their recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy.

The Seventh Grade Student Council would like to thank Mrs. Wallace who volunteered so much of her time teaching the “stars” of the event….our teachers!

The Great Gatsby, Nassau County Museum of Art’s 2013 Museum Ball, celebrates the glamorous Gold Coast era immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. In the spirit of the Fitzgerald novel and the new Baz Luhrmann film, the Museum Ball through décor and the attire of Ball guests, will evoke that unforgettable era of fabulous parties and wealth on Long Island’s North Shore.

The 2013 Ball, to be held on Saturday, June 8th at 7 p.m., returns to the grounds of museum’s own historic Gold Coast mansion, the former Frick Estate, Clayton. This elegant black tie evening of dining and dancing to the music of The Alex Donner Orchestra, along with a spectacular silent auction, is the museum’s major annual fundraiser.

Always a highlight of the local social calendar, the Ball provides an important component of the museum’s operating budget, offering support for an ambitious schedule of exhibitions and stimulating educational programs for adults, students, families and school groups. The Ball’s Media Partner is the prestigious magazine, New York Cottages and Gardens.

Through the courtesy of Great Neck Jaguar, the museum is offering a limited number of raffles for a two-year lease on a 2013 Jaguar XF-AWD. Only 300 raffles will be available for sale, at $100 each, three for $250 or seven for $500.

Celebrating Stars Of Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery, held on Thursday, May 2nd, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $290,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families.

More than 250 community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island. Guests arrived by red carpet entrance to the Hotel, and enjoyed a silent auction, dinner and dancing throughout the program. LICADD unveiled a video that highlighted its newest programs, as well as the personal stories of clients who found recovery in the agency’s programs and services. WABC-TV’s Entertainment Reporter and Movie Critic Sandy Kenyon served as the Master of Ceremonies and LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi was on hand with Dinner Chair Richard Antonacci to deliver awards to

Villani, MBA, AC was awarded the Peter Sweisgood Lifetime Achievement Award.

Recently CBS’s 60 Minutes reported on the impact of the Robin Hood Foundation - the force behind the12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden, which raised $50 million to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The Robin Hood has given a grant to the YMCA of Long Island to help Long Islanders who suffered

devastation as a result of Sandy. The YMCA, an island-wide, cause-driven nonprofit, has earmarked the funds to help families affected by the storm attend after-school care, participate in counseling, or attend summer camp.

“The YMCA of Long Island is all about making an impact on the lives of Long Islanders,” says Anne

N. Brigis, President and CEO, “So many children have developed fears as a result of the storm and families are financially burdened as the try to rebuild. Summer camp, counseling and afterschool services offer kids positive, nurturing and memorable experiences while giving parents peace of mind.”

The Robin Hood Foundation’s mission is to “find, fund, and partner with programs that have proven they are… a consistent force for good in the lives of New Yorkers.”

The YMCA of Long Island has met the foundation’s rigorous standards and will disperse funds from the Robin Hood Foundation to 30 families who have

requested aid.

“Long Islanders know all too well the physical and emotional destruction that Sandy left in its wake.

We are honored that the Robin Hood Foundation recognizes the Y’s ability to make a difference,” says Brigis. “Every family we help is truly in need, and it’s our heart-felt privilege to assist them.”
