Days To Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic.

As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,

I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!).

Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time.

Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I

still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th.

Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening?

Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have.

Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation.

The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle.

So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School celebrated a full decade of its dance program.

Founded in the 20022003 school year by Mrs. Renee Sussman, the dance program has grown to include well over two hundred students, an array of dance courses, a large afterschool dance club and a performance company. In the words of Mrs. Sussman, “I try to create an atmosphere where students can be given artistic license and take ownership of their work.”

SJB presented their annual Spring Dance Concert, entitled A Decade of Dance. The concert began with a ten minute documentary that included interviews from alumni, pictures from the past ten years, and quotes from famous choreographers that helped display the philosophy behind the

dance program.

The concert included twenty nine dance pieces with over two hundred students, a huge finally, and even a balloon drop at the end of the night.

Under the direction of Mrs. Sussman, all of the dances in this year’s concert were student choreograph, continuing the creative goal behind the dance program.

When asked, Mrs. Sussman said “I am so proud to have created something that has not only grown so much but has a clear philosophy behind it. I am proud of every single student who has walked through the dance studio doors, many of which have gone on to major or minor in dance in collage, some of which are dancing professionally.

The success of this program is truly one of the proudest moments of my life.” SJB looks forward to many

Ride For Life Rides On

Greeted by their families, supporters and a shining display of 6,000 pinwheels, Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient and advocate, and other ALS patients, rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus for the annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, marking the halfway point of the ride from Southold to Manhattan, which concluded May 18th. The pinwheels represented

the American lives lost each year to ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During the ceremony, Pendergast presented a check on behalf of the Ride for Life for $150,000 to Stony Brook University to support ALS research at Stony Brook Medicine and the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island.

for Life organization raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease.

The Ride has raised more than $4.5 million for ALS research since its inception. Each year Stony Brook receives a portion of the Ride’s proceeds to fund research.

Senior leadership from Stony Brook Medicine gave Pendergast a gift – a genuine Louisville Slugger baseball bat engraved with the words: “SBU and the Ride for Life ‘Strike out ALS’.” The gift symbolizes Pendergast’s advocacy, courage, endurance and vision in the cause to find a cure for ALS. “We are determined to advance ALS research at Stony Brook,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “This is a time when we are learning more about the science of

“This is truly an honor to join the Stony Brook University community to recognize this inspiring effort,” said Senator Flanagan. “Thanks to the dedication of Chris Pendergast and the great scientific work being done

at Stony Brook, we can all share in the hope that someday soon we will find a cure for this destructive disease that has affected so many of our family members and friends on Long Island.”

The Remembrance Ceremony included a tribute to patients lost to ALS. Ninety names were recited to mark the number of minutes between deaths

from ALS in the United States. Family members received a balloon to be released in their loved ones honor. Amidst the pinwheel display and balloons gliding in the air, all listened to “Blowin in the Wind,” hearing words that echoed a cure for ALS is surely blowing in the wind.

With summer around the corner, Huntington Learning Centers are kicking off its annual Reading Adventure program for children ages kindergarten through eighth grade.

To participate, students first choose books from Huntington’s pre-selected book lists, which include a wide range of highinterest book choices for all grade levels and reading abilities.

Reading Adventure underscores the excitement that a good book can bring into a child’s life. Each participating reader receives a reading “passport” in which he or she record the books he or she reads and writes a journal entry about each. The entire program encourages students to think of reading as a way to explore new ideas, interests, places and

people.

“We believe that summer is an ideal time to nurture the reading habit because children have more time to read for pleasure than they do during the school year,” says Dr. Raymond Huntington, founder and chairman of Huntington Learning Center. “Our Reading Adventure program is designed with fun in mind. Our experts have identified a variety of books for children of all ages and reading abilities - stories that engage children and get them excited about books.

Experience has proven to us time and time again that the more children read, the better readers they become and the more they enjoy it - and choose it as an activity they want to do.”

Huntington’s Reading Adventure program runs from May through August.

At the culmination of the program, Huntington Learning Center locations will honor participants’ reading achievements.

During the celebration each child is recognized for his/her achievement and receives a special award.

“Reading Adventure is one of our favorite programs at Huntington because it gets children excited about reading,” says Huntington.

“Students who participate keep their brains active while school is on break, and just as important, they learn to think of reading as one of life’s great pastimes.”

Men Of Vision Dinner being recognized for his commitment to the improvement of the St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. He has chaired a committee composed of faculty, staff, parents and alumni whose charge is to develop a plan for improvements to the schools’ future technology.

His son Jonathan is graduating from SJB this year.

Peter Judge is one of four siblings who attended SJB and has remained a very active alumnus since he began his practice. In many tangible and spiritual ways, Dr. Judge has supported the school whenever he has been called upon by the administration. A regular at Career Day, Dr. Judge has often mentored students interested the medical field and is an avid fan of SJB sports teams.

His two sons graduated

from SJB as well; Peter ’05 and Stephen ’08.

Kevin Tobin has been a fixture at St. John the Baptist since the day the school opened. A member of the first graduating class, he was very active during his days as a student. When the Alumni Association was in its formative years, Kevin became its first president.

He married his high school sweetheart, the former Eileen Walsh ’72, and they raised four daughters; Colleen ‘97, Bridget ‘02, Maureen 03, and Kerry ‘08.

He has been on the Nassau County Police Force since 1979.

On Monday, June 17th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 25th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho.

Ride For Life Rides On Greeted by their families, supporters and a shining display of 6,000 pinwheels, Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient and advocate, and other ALS patients, rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus for the annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, marking the halfway point of the ride from Southold to Manhattan, which concluded May 18th. The pinwheels represented the American lives lost each year to ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During the ceremony, Pendergast presented a check on behalf of the Ride for Life for $150,000 to Stony Brook University to support ALS research at Stony Brook Medicine and the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island.

Started in 1998 by Pendergast, the Ride for Life organization raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride has raised more than $4.5 million for ALS research since its inception. Each year Stony Brook receives a portion of the Ride’s proceeds to fund research.

Senior leadership from Stony Brook Medicine gave Pendergast a gift – a genuine Louisville Slugger baseball bat engraved with the words: “SBU and the Ride for Life ‘Strike out ALS’.” The gift symbolizes Pendergast’s advocacy, courage, endurance and vision in the cause to find a cure for ALS.

Bike Rodeo

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Academy Street PTA with a Bike Rodeo on Saturday May 18th in celebration of Bike Safety Month.

Sheriff’s Office staff helped run this Safety Clinic to teach kids the real world skills they need to ride a bicycle safely.

Lessons such as the ABC’s of bicycle maintenance, where to ride on the road, how to use hand signals, how to safely cross an intersection, and how to properly wear a bicycle helmet were demonstrated and discussed by Sheriff’s Deputies.

Participants tested

their steering skills and practiced safe riding, all while having fun.

Andrew Kim, a tenth grade student at Commach High School, won a silver medal at the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project Olympiad (ISWEEP) competition in Houston, Texas. ISWEEEP is a huge international science fair that focuses on sustainable energy solutions. Students from all over the world present their projects that pertain to three main scientific topics: energy, engineering, and environment. The program is geared to secondary students preparing to tackle global issues through engineering.

Students submit their research papers and application, and finalists are chosen and invited to the competitions. This year’s finalists respresented 68 countries.

Andrew partnered with Raymond Yin, who is an eleventh grade student at Ward Melville High School. The young men met three years ago at a John Hopkins summer enrichment program, and then again at Stony Brook University last summer

when they decided to work together on the project.

Their project was entered in the energy category, and dealt with the “Efficient Dehydration of Ethanol by Pervaporation using Graphene Oxide Membranes.” The project focused on more efficient ways to obtain ethanol as a fuel, and took second place, ranking the project in the top 30% among the hundreds projects in the energy category.

Andrew explained the project this way: “The biofuels used in the US are mainly ethanol based.

Ethanol is extracted from fermented corn grain, and after it is fermented, ethanol usually comes out as a very dilute form. In order to make this ethanol fit for use in biofuels, the excess water must be removed in a process called dehydration. This dehydration step tends to be the most expensive and energy dependent process.

The current method for dehydration, called azeotropic dehydration, tends to be a very expensive and energy wasteful process.

My project concerned itself with a

more efficient process, called pervaporation.

Since pervaporation is a membrane-based process, it is important to use a effective material.

Graphene oxide, a chemical that has been recently used and praised as a “super material,” was used due to its ability to separate water and ethanol. The results from this experiment show that graphene oxide-based membranes were much more effective than normally used pervaporation membranes. The results of this experiment could be used to help make the biofuel production process much cheaper, and hopefully, biofuels will be more commonly used as a substitute for normal gasoline.”

Andew shared, “The whole experience was great. I was able to meet people from all over the world, from students who live 30 minutes from the fair, to students from the other side of the planet. I plan to continue working in this research area next year in a lab at Stony Brook University. “

Sixth graders packed Nesaquake Middle School library to meet and listen to Buddhist monk, Kelsang Rigpa. “Uncle Rigpa,” as he is known by his nephew, sixth-grader Justin Hildebrandt, is a former middle-school English Language Arts teacher in the Syosset school district.

He fascinated students with his explanation of the basic Buddhist practices of kindness, wisdom and meditation.

Clad in the traditional burgundy “shamtab” and

“dhannka” and burgundy and yellow meditation robes, Rigpa outlined the symbolism behind this traditional monk’s garb and answered students’ questions about his life as a Buddhist monk.

The sixth-grade social studies curriculum includes the study of ancient India, where Buddhism originated, and ancient China, the country to which Buddhism eventually spread. Pupils were excited by the opportunity to see their

On Friday, May 10th, the three skilled nursing facilities of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center, West Islip, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Sayville and St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in Smithtown, participated in this year’s Senior Golden Games.

This sporting event is held every year at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.

Thirteen skilled nursing facilities from Suffolk County participate in five different

modified events, such as relay race, volleyball, basketball, distance throw and bowling. Competitors from each facility vie for gold, silver and bronze medals.

This year residents from St. Catherine of Siena proudly won the silver medal in bowling as residents from Our Lady of Consolation took the silver medal in the volleyball competition.

Frank Bertolino, a resident from Our Lady of Consolation, led his team to be the first place winner of the gold medal in the distance throw competition. Nine

residents from Good Samaritan Nursing Home also competed and proudly came away with a silver medal in the basketball throw.

This event is a wonderful way for our seniors to participate in a little fun competition and come away feeling good about themselves. At Catholic Health Services of Long Island we promote the importance of enhancing the quality of our residents’ lives and this is just one small way in which we do.

Everyone enjoyed the team spirit of the day and came away winners.

CELEBRATING THE EARTH - Smithtown High School West celebrated Earth Day, April 22nd, with their 2nd Annual Campus Cleanup sponsored by the Ecology Club.

More than 200 student volunteers and 15 faculty members spent some of the cool, breezy day picking up garbage all around the campus. Numerous clubs and athletic teams as well as independents joined in the efforts that produced 24 bags of garbage.

On Saturday May 18th, 35 new names were added to the Responders Remembered Memorial Park Wall in Nesconset, New York. These 35 men and women were honored by the 9/11 Responders Remembered Memorial Group for their heroism and for making the ultimate sacrifice as a direct result of their work at the World Trade Center following 9/11.

The 9/11 Responders Remembered Memorial Park, located at the northeast corner of Smithtown Boulevard and Gibbs Pond Road

in Nesconset, New York opened two years ago after much planning by the 9/11 Responders Remembered Committee, including Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, who was also in attendance this past Saturday morning.

In addition to the newly engraved names, a time capsule filled with various mementos, documents and other historical evidence regarding 9/11, its victims, heroes, and information surrounding the erection of the Memorial Park was buried and not to be

opened until September 10, 2038. One such document was the Suffolk County Resolution, sponsored

by Legislator John M. Kennedy, that allowed the building of the 9/11 Responders Remembered Memorial Park. “It has been and continues to be an honor and privilege to be a part of such an important site in the community. Not only does it pay tribute to those we lost but it will be a reminder to our children and future generations to never forget,” said Legislator Kennedy.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis.

Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses!

For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class.

This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences.

All of the stress that comes with waiting for

your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down.

These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over.

These students have done it, they have completed their journey.

Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip!

Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter

grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career.

The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall.

This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic.

So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.
