Stony Brook University in collaboration with the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, CO, is hosting and participating in the DREAMS (Doppler Radar for Education And Mesoscale Studies) project, a three-week National Science Foundation-funded endeavor to study storms, sea breezes and other

weather phenomena around the New York City (NYC) and Long Island area. The project, led by Dr. Brian Colle, a Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook, is utilizing the Doppler on Wheels 6 (DOW 6), a truck equipped with a Doppler weather radar and a set of weather instruments that can be deployed in the field (a

“pod”). A research (Long – EZ) aircraft piloted by Professor John Mak of SoMAS is also collecting high frequency wind and temperature data just south of Long Island for some events.

The participants in DREAMS include Professor Colle and his Coastal Meteorology and Atmospheric Prediction (COMAP) research group, 15-20 Stony Brook undergraduate atmospheric students, some forecasters from the NWS office for NYC located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and a few students and faculty from Nassau Community College. The group is measuring and investigating small-scale phenomena, such as how thunderstorms evolve as they cross an urban coastal region such as New York City and Long Island, and how sea breezes develop

on the north and south shores of Long Island, which can potentially modify thunderstorm development.

Long Island’s weather patterns, surface observations and numerical models have been studied in the past using conventional radar located at the NWS office at BNL. This project marks the first time a high-resolution Doppler radar can be brought up close to the action to zoom in on Long Island’s local weather phenomena.

“Students have the opportunity to operate the Doppler radar, launch weather balloons, deploy a weather instrument pod in the field, take weather observations with their vehicles and help with daily weather briefings for field operations,” said Professor Colle.

The research team is operating the DOW 6 to

measure: the change in thunderstorm winds and precipitation intensity near the coast, the depth and inland movement and speed of the sea breeze, and how a strong lowlevel jet called the New York Bight Jet develops near the south shore of New York City due to the strong regional temperature gradients between the sea and land, and the small-scale precipitation structures associated with flooding rains.

“This field project provides students an excellent opportunity to learn how a Doppler radar works,” said Professor Colle. “At the same time it provides a unique handson research opportunity on how different weather phenomena evolve around Long Island and New York City.”

The DREAMS project team will collect data

in the DOW 6 at Smith Point County Park, Jones Beach State Park, Sunken Meadow State Park, Jacob Riis Park near the Rockaways, Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, the EPCAL site in Riverhead, and more.

The project kicked off at Stony Brook University on June 17th with an open house and seminar with Drs. Joshua Wurman and Karen Kosiba of the Center for Severe Weather Research and of the former Discovery Channel show “Storm Chasers.”

During the presentation, Drs. Wurman and Kosiba explained how the Doppler on Wheels truck works and some of their experiences in the Great Plains studying tornado motion and evolution and on the coast studying small-scale wind structures within hurricanes.

Fire Island Dance Festival, the most anticipated charity event of the season on Fire Island, returns July 19th to 21st, for its 19th edition. Joe’s dad founded the family electrical business after World War ll where just about the whole family spent some time working. Then Joe’s oldest brother and he took the company to the next level acquiring other electrical businesses. Today the family business still thrives with him and his partner Donna earning All Service Electric a reputation offering service second to none.

While his son Justin attended NY Maritime College, Joe again became involved and served as President of the Parents Association and Ex-Officio of the Fort Schuyler Alumni Association and Foundation.

During that time as a member of AFE Chapter 4, Joe helped establish the NY Maritime College Student Chapter which has led to internships and jobs for young talented cadets in the facilities industry.

Joe continues to pay it forward as he is currently

serving his third year as the president of the Long lsland Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, is a member of the Electrical lndustry Board of Nassau and Suffolk Counties and is an employer trustee for l.B.E.W. Local 25 Health and Benefit Fund. Joe lives in Middle lsland, NY with his wife MaryEllen, they have two grown children and three grandchildren. Joe truly illustrates the saying “if you need something done ask a busy person”.

Starflower Experiences Starflower Experiences will be offering Earthkeepers as a summer camp, based at Manor Farm in the Elwood area of Huntington. Ten and eleven year-olds will visit Mama Nature’s Munch Room, meet a “Spec,” dig up a buried time capsule and earn four keys to help them live in harmony with the earth and understand how the systems of life on earth operate. The keys open real locks on boxes containing secrets only Earthkeepers know.

If you like being outdoors and care about our fragile planet, then you should become an Earthkeeper.

This incredibly dynamic, fun program helps young people learn about and care for the earth. You will also get a tast of exploring right there in Berkeley Jackson County Park.

This initial week of Earthkeepers will be followed by a week of Earth Explorers,

open only to those youngsters registering for Earthkeepers, Earthkeepers from past years and students who have participated in the Rangers of the Earth program.

During this week, participants will have a chance to really explore the parks near Manor Farm and take tirps to other places to experience a different landscape.

Starflower Experiences is a not-for-profit educational organization with a reputation for conducting exciting participatory environmental experiences for many local schools.

The Earthkeepers program was developed

by The Institute for Earth Education and is currently being run at sites across the U.S., Canada, Britain, Cyprus, Finland, The Netherlands, Australia and Japan.

Are We Ready?

This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders.

These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor.

Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election.

For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home.

This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of

their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure.

Others will find it to be a support.

Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some.

Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out.

As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase.

I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every

other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed.

Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home.

In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed.

Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later.

Normal?

What’s that?

Sleeping in your own bed?

Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine.

What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon.

I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of

our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good.

Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it.

They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

The exhibit showcases the remarkable and creative efforts of the residents of 33 facilities located in the New York metropolitan

area who are suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. These artists created the artwork between September 2012 and March 2013 as part of ADRC’s Art Expression Program, in which ADRC staff members worked with the staff members and residents at the facilities to bring their creative

thoughts to life.

The artwork was then brought to ADRC, where it is on display with a biography and photo of the artist.

Paintings will are on display and available for sale, with all proceeds benefiting ADRC’s Art Expression Program.

Wood Badge Award

Donna DiGiovanni of the Fox Patrol was presented with her Wood Badge Beads, neckerchief, woggle and certificate in special ceremonies at Troop 403’s June Court of Honor, held at Christ Lutheran Church in East Northport on June 17th. This recognition was the culmination of a combination “learning/ hands-on applications” time management and training course that is available to its adult scouting volunteer leaders

by the Boy Scouts of America.

Kings Park resident Mrs. DiGiovanni is a scouting volunteer, serving as a Committee Member in Troop 403 and Pack 403 in Commack/East Northport in the Matinecock District.

She participated in two weekend-long outdoors sessions in the Wood Badge Course N7-404-11-1 for the group-participation instructional section at held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp.

The course was conducted in September and October of 2011. In order to complete the training, the scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what had been learned in a variety of selfdirected goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in March of 2013. This was the Wood Badge for the 21st Century - a new and updated Wood Badge Course, which was in place since 2001.

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently toured the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, a local museum highlighting the ways the sea has been woven into Long Island’s culture. The collection includes New York State’s only fully-equipped 19th Century whaleboat with original gear, and one of the most notable scrimshaw collections in the northeast.

“Nomi and everyone at the museum put on a spectacular tour

that highlighted Cold Spring’s history and the important impact that whaling had on Long Island’s development,” said Lupinacci. “Long Island’s development and culture have always been tremendously influenced by its connection to the sea and seafaring people, and the museum presents this history in an insightful and educational way. The museum is certainly a great place to take the kids this summer to learn a little about our community’s

history.”

The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum’s archival holdings of 6,000 artifacts document the whaling and general maritime history both of Cold Spring Harbor and Long Island. Each year, over 12,000 school children explore the museum’s innovative education programs.

Sharing The Voice Share the Voice, a non-profit organization established to enhance the lives of disabled children, is pleased to announce that it delivered its first adaptive tricycle to a disabled child on Long Island on Saturday, June 22nd at noon. The Rifton adaptive tricycle, valued at over $1,500, was presented to 7-year-old Katie Soehl, who was diagnosed with Rhett’s syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects girls almost exclusively, as a surprise gift for her upcoming birthday.

“All adaptive equipment provides unlimited physical, cognitive and emotional benefits; but combining those benefits

with making it fun to use is key. As a parent, seeing your child ride along with their siblings and neighborhood kids is heartwarming. We wish Katie a very happy 8th birthday and are glad we could present her with this gift,” said Lynda Graham, founder and president of Share the Voice.

Established to enhance the lives of disabled children, Share the Voice aims to provide special needs children with adaptive tricycles built for their specific abilities.

Recreational use of adaptive tricycles brings many rewards, including building self-esteem and confidence, providing stress relief, increasing

social skills, strengthening weak muscles and stretching tight ones, and increasing balance and gross motor skills.

Adaptive tricycles also help physically and a cognitively challenged child become more independent and gives them the freedom and ability to socialize with mainstream children.

Captain Matthew Linton, the new Commanding Officer of the Suffolk County Recruiting Company, also has had a decorated career around the world. He has received the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Ranger Tab, Airboirne and Air Assault Badge, from his various tours that saw him in Germany as Platoon Leader for Alpha Company and then on to Iraq as Executive Officer for Charlie Company during the surge. After his return from Iraq, Captain Linton went to Fort Benning, Georgia, where

he served as a Senior Platoon Trainer for IBOLC, followed by a tour in Afghanistan in command of Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment “Catamount” at Combat Outpost Makuan.

He has been awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation with two V devices, Ranger, Combat Infantry and Expert Infantry Badge, Pathfinder, Airborne and Air Assault Badge.

“It is an honor to be able to participate in the passing of the baton from Captain James to Captain Linton,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I would like to wish Captain James much success in his future commands and welcome Captain Linton to Hauppauge. “I know he will continue Captain James’s work and further it to all ends.”

The 35th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament will be presented.

This tournament consists of a 6-player division and a 4-player division. All 6-player division games will take place on Saturday, July 13th, and all 4-player division games will take place on Sunday, July 14th.

There is no rain date for this event.

Registration is free and will continue through Thursday, July 12th, or until the roster is full.

Players may only reigster for one team in either the 6-player division or 4-player division. Double

registration will result in elimination of the second team.

Registration will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays, at the Long Island State Park Headquarters, located in Babylon, Exit 37N off of the Southern State Parkway.

Mail-in registration can be sent to: Volleyball Tournament, Recreation Department, and P.O. Box 247, Babylon, NY 11702.

All 6-player and 4-player games will begin at 9 a.m. on their scheduled date.

The first round of matches will be played as a Round Robin, in both divisions.

All 6-player teams are

guaranteed to play seven games, and all 4-player teams are guaranteed to play five games. The top two teams from each Round Robin bracket will advance onto the quarterfinals for their division.

Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, attended the Change of Command Ceremony for the United States Army Suffolk Recruiting Company in which Captain Lendrick James relinquished command to Captain Matthew Linton.

The ceremony, which took place in Hauppauge at Veterans Plaza, located in front of the H. Lee Dennison Suffolk County Government Office Building, signifies a changing of leadership for the Suffolk Recruiting Station. Captain James, who has been the Commanding Officer since 2010, will be moving on to Maryland for his next assignment.

With more than $1 million in gifts from those who believe in Father Tom’s dream and another $1 million in matching funds from Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, the Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research at Stony Brook University has a healthy beginning.

“In this first round of funding, the Hartman Center will support two investigators who were previously

studying Parkinson’s disease, and welcomes 10 established investigators who are new to the field of Parkinson’s disease research,” said President Stanley.

“Their research covers new ground both in basic science and in clinical applications to increase the quality of life for those afflicted with the disease.”

The Center’s lead researchers include Leslie “Craig” Evinger, a widely published and highly regarded Stony Brook neuroscientist who is already revolutionizing the study of Parkinson’s, and Professor Lorna Role, co-director of the Institute for Advanced Neuroscience and department chair, who examines a broad range of

neurodegenerative disorders. The Hartman Center will provide a hub where they, as well as other researchers, scientists, medical experts, students and clinicians can think, experiment, and most importantly, collaborate as they work to translate discoveries in basic science into practical solutions for Parkinson’s patients.

Current research is already showing promising new developments. President Stanley, a physician, noted that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is the death of a specific group of neurons in the brain.

An explanation for why these neurons die is that there is too much calcium coming into the neurons through a special opening in their membrane.

Drs. Lonnie Wollmuth and Mark Bowen propose to identify a molecular signature for this opening to enable them to block the calcium inflow to rescue the dying neurons. Additionally, Drs. HoiChung Leung and Christine DeLorenzo propose to use new human brain imaging techniques to characterize changes in brain structure that affect planning and reasoning in Parkinson’s patients.

“With reductions in government spending, private philanthropy is becoming even more important to advance critical research,” said Dexter Bailey, Vice President for University Advancement.

“Thanks to the innovative research ongoing at Stony Brook University and the leadership of the Hartman Foundation, the Center now has a permanent home and the fight against Parkinson’s disease will continue.”

The Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research in the Stony Brook University Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was dedicated during a ceremony in the Center on June 13th, and named in honor of Monsignor Thomas Hartman, beloved priest, Emmy Award-winning television and radio personality, and champion for countless good causes.

“Father Tom,” as he is often referred, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004. True to his character, say his friends, he thought of his diagnosis as a gift and immediately established a foundation to raise funds to support Parkinson’s disease research. From 2004 to 2012, the Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, whose board of directors included Stony Brook alumnus Ernie Canadeo, raised about $1 million each year, awarding grants to a variety of researchers, institutions and initiatives.

As Father Tom’s health began to deteriorate, it became clear the Foundation would not be sustainable.

Having reconnected with his alma mater and realizing the powerful research university Stony Brook had become – and its particular expertise in the neurosciences – Canadeo suggested establishing the Thomas Hartman Center at Stony Brook, an idea wholeheartedly supported by Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and others at the University.

“The idea came with a challenge,” said Canadeo.

“We needed to raise $1 million to establish the Center at Stony Brook. If we did so, the gift would be doubled through a matching gift from Jim and Marilyn Simons.”

With an inner circle of Father Tom’s friends stepping forward to make philanthropic gifts at a kickoff dinner held in April 2012, the fundraising received a tremendous head start: $500,000. A gala held in October, attended by more than 500 people and Father Tom himself, elevated
