This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do.

Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family

has endured mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination.

Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. So please join for what will surely be another monumental event to support this inspirational family in their time of need.

On Sunday September 22nd, Giant Step Services of Hauppauge held their second annual Circle For A Cause fundraiser to benefit Strength for Life raising $2,720 for the non profit.

Strength for Life provides FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats for cancer patients/survivors on Long Island. Giant Step Services is a community based comprehensive vocational/independent living program for postsecondary students with learning challenges located in Hauppauge.

The Giant Step program is designed to maximize

each young adult’s growth by utilizing supportive, individualized approach to movement from home or boarding school to community and work or post-secondary academics.

The students went above and beyond reaching out to family and friends and walking laps to show their support of the Strength for Life programs that promote “fighting cancer with exercise.”

Their sponsorship was matched

by Ms. Lauri Alpern and Mr. Dave Finkelstein of Giant Step Services. This is truly a blessing for Strength for Life.

For every $300 donation a cancer patient/survivor is sponsored for a wellness retreat participating in an overnight stay, a day full of classes (Zumba, Tai Chi, Yoga, Strength Training, Reiki and Meditation) and fabulous guest speakers presenting on alternative therapies and nutrition. Giant Step Services sponsored nine new survivors to attend a wellness retreat in 2014.

Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) recently donated their services to Head Start Early Childhood Development Program.

Five members of the Professional Organizers of Long Island (POLI) contributed their skills and services to reorganizing a storage room at Head Start’s Hempstead location.

The room houses program supplies, books, and donated clothing for preschoolers three to five years old and

their families. The certified professional organizers worked on this handson project alongside new Director, Cagney Wilson who recently arrived at the facility.

NAPO’s pro-bono organizing project for Head Start included rearranging shelves, sorting hundreds of pre-school books, toys, and clothing and provided storage alternatives in addition to labeling the contents of the room. They also assisted in reorganizing the Director’s office.

“Now staff can easily access the items they need without searching through unmarked boxes and bags,” explains Diana Soll, owner of Grand Solutions LLC in Roslyn Heights and Past President of NAPO’s NY chapter.

“Now we know where everything is and are able to manage the inventory much more efficiently than before. We can now start the school year knowing where everything is!” says Wilson.

Current members and artists who join as members are welcome to submit applications for the exhibit showing in two parts: Part One (artist last names A-L) runs from November 10 to December 1 and Part Two (artist last names M-Z) runs from December 15th to January 5th.

An annual Flag Retirement Ceremony presented by the Suffolk County Boy Scout Council was held on Saturday, September 21st, at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Each year, Scouts collect old worn flags which are retired at a special ceremony.

Boy Scouts from Troop 3 (Smithtown) and Troop 7 (St. James) assisted with the ceremony.

Cub Scouts from several other units including Packs 228 and 589 also presented flags for retirement.

Troop 3 Scout, Jake Schlesinger, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and Scout Oath. A special dedication then followed honoring eight groups of people who lost their lives on 9/11, in the line of duty, or in other violent incidents.

For each group, a flag

was presented under salute and was laid to rest in a fire pit. Flags were also presented and retired in memory of a loved one.

Several Troop 3 Scouts, including Russell Giannotti, and Michael Pomeroy retired flags in honor of a family member.

Scouts and adult leaders presented hundreds of tattered flags and laid them to rest in flames in order to properly retire the flags.

Semifinalists Named

Awards of Excellence and Honorable Mentions will be determined by exhibition juror Robert Carter, Professor of Art at Nassau Community College.

A Memorable Occasion

Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Seniors Brian Eng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta have been named National Merit Semifinalists in the 59th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented students will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition to qualify for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million

that will be offered next spring. To become a National Merit Finalist, the Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirms their performance on the PSAT Eng, Mackin and Mehta earned this outstanding national recognition for their exceptional achievement on the PSAT in fall 2012. The nationwide

pool of National Merit Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highestscoring entrants in each state.

“The entire Hauppauge School District community is honored to congratulate Brian Eng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta on being named National Merit Semifinalists,” stated Superintendent of School Patricia Sullivan-Kriss.

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight.

From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat.

We found ourselves in a room full of legionnaires, overachievers and politicians, such as Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Congressman Peter King, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga

and many others. It was truly an intense experience.

That night, at Post 1738, we came together to share stories and receive awards. Delivering a speech in front of them was

even more anxiety provoking.

The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism.

For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing.

After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated.

At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism.

I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

The American Red Cross has awarded a $60,000 grant to The Disability Opportunity Fund to support longterm recovery services for people with disabilities and their families affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The Disability Opportunity Fund (The DOF) will use the grant to help 50 families develop housing solutions and navigate the rebuilding process for their homes.

The services will include individual counseling, assistance in locating possible properties, and advising on rehabilitation to make dwellings handicap-accessible on Long Island over the next 12 months. The DOF is a community finance organization based in Nassau County.

“We are thankful for this grant from the Red Cross,” said Charles D. Hammerman, president and CEO of The Disability Opportunity Fund. “The resources will enable us to continue to provide assistance to people with disabilities, and their families, many of whom still have unresolved issues

related to Sandy relief.”

John Miller, CEO, Red Cross on Long Island, said The Disability Opportunity Fund is a valued organization for the people it serves. “The Red Cross is committed to helping all Superstorm Sandy survivors recover.

This organization will help a vulnerable population of people on Long Island who still have Sandy-related needs.”

Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $307 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of mid-July, the Red Cross has spent or committed $260 million – 85 percent of the donated funds.

Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey 11 months after the storm. As of September, the Red Cross has partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to

Red Cross grant support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Henry Street Settlement, Island Harvest, Jewish Community Council of Rockaway Peninsula, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, National Baptist Convention USA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Operation Hope, Points of Light Foundation, Salvation Army, Save the Children, The Staten Island Foundation, United Way of Long Island and Visiting Nurse Service of New York on Sandy recovery efforts in the areas of housing assistance, case management, mental health services, volunteer coordination, and food security.

Additional community grants will be announced in the weeks ahead.

ROUNDTABLE SpEAKER - At the September Matinecock District Boy Scout and Cub Scout Roundtable meeting, the Autism Speaks Long Island Chapter presented an interactive discussion on the autism community and scouting. The presentation focused on how scout leaders can better interact and modify existing programs to include children living with autism and how other troop members can support and collaborate with children in their troop who are living with autism.

Cliché? Sure. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting.

Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons.

In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history.

Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end.

The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson.

Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond.

It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me.

Thanks for the memories, Mariano. #42 Forever.

Matthew O’Connell, a junior at Commack High School, developed software to relay pharmaceutical information using pictograms - illustrations that represent ideas or words. He was honored to present his work at the annual International Pharmaceutical Federation Congress in Dublin, Ireland on September 3rd, and was surrounded by pharmacist professionals who wanted to know when the software would be available for use.

Matthew’s pictogram software will help pharmacists worldwide to accurately communicate with patients who speak a different language or have difficulty

understanding and reading the literature that accompanies medications.

The Java-based program utilizes translations and pictograms to ensure that patients are able to understand the details about their medications and to follow prescriber’s instructions.

Matthew has been working with mentors from The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. A few years ago, Commack High School Science Research teacher Richard Kurtz and some of his students were working on a project that involved the construction of a device that would deliver medication to patients.

Mr. Kurtz developed a working relationship with Dr. Régis Vaillancourt, Director of Pharmacy at the Children’s Hospital of

Eastern Ontario, and other doctors there. Mr. Kurtz asked Régis if he needed any special things done, and that’s how Matthew’s project was born. Matthew is a current science research student under the guidance of Richard Kurtz and Lorraine Solomon. He also received a tremendous amount of help from his computer science teacher, Kristin Holmes.

Matthew said, “I developed the software to fill a need. It is going to be utilized by pharmacists worldwide to better facilitate, through the use of pictograms, the communication of the proper use of prescription medication to patients where there are language and/or literacy barriers between patients and pharmacist.”

The Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Family Education Outreach Program (FEOP) is dedicated to supporting the education of children in temporary housing situations. Julia Schnurman, assistant administrative coordinator of FEOP, said, “We strive to put donations directly into the hands of families.”

When Julia received word from Jennifer Gunn, marketing manager for Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), that more than 20 boxes of

school supplies had been collected by the Employee Involvement Group at TFCU, Julia knew exactly who to call − Vincent Palumbo − homeless liaison at the Brentwood UFSD. Jennifer said, “We have been giving back to the community for many years with pet supplies, food donations, and donations to organizations like Ride to Defeat ASL Fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease. TFCU’s philosophy is ‘People Helping People.’”

On Friday, September

13th, a caravan of cars carrying donations made its way from TFCU in Hauppauge to the Brentwood UFSD. Mr. Palumbo said, “There is an immediate need for tangible supplies for our students. We want to eliminate the barrier to students getting educated.”

He assured Jennifer and Julia that by day’s end the backpacks, notebooks, calculators, pens, pencils, and other assorted school supplies would go directly into the hands of families in need.

Semifinalists Named

Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Seniors Brian Eng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta have been named National Merit Semifinalists in the 59th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented students will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition to qualify for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million

that will be offered next spring. To become a National Merit Finalist, the Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirms their performance on the PSAT Eng, Mackin and Mehta earned this outstanding national recognition for their exceptional achievement on the PSAT in fall 2012. The nationwide

pool of National Merit Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highestscoring entrants in each state.

“The entire Hauppauge School District community is honored to congratulate Brian Eng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta on being named National Merit Semifinalists,” stated Superintendent of School Patricia Sullivan-Kriss.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Troop 3 Scout, Jake Schlesinger, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and Scout Oath. A special dedication then followed honoring eight groups of people who lost their lives on 9/11, in the line of duty, or in other violent incidents.

For each group, a flag was presented under salute and was laid to rest in a

fire pit. Flags were also presented and retired in memory of a loved one.

Several Troop 3 Scouts, including Russell Giannotti, and Michael Pomeroy retired flags in honor of a family member.

Scouts and adult leaders presented hundreds of tattered flags and laid them to rest in flames in order to properly retire the flags.

An annual Flag Retirement Ceremony presented by the Suffolk County Boy Scout Council was held on Saturday, September 21st, at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Each year, Scouts collect old worn flags which are retired at a special ceremony.
