Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, Starting Early Program will be hosting yoga for preschoolers. The “hands-on” interactive workshop will be full of resources and activities specifically designed for the preschool population.

The conference will be held on Tuesday, November 5th from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at DDI’s Starting Early Preschool located at 25 Little Plains Road in Huntington.

“Numerous studies have documented the significant positive effects in children’s physical, educational and behavioral growth through the practice of yoga and mindfulness,” commented DDI’s Director of Starting Early Linda Whitaker, Ed.D. “Professionals working with children are noticing the overwhelming

increase in stress, attention, behavioral, and sensory related disorders affecting the development of our students. Yoga and mindfulness provide creative and potentially effective methods to address these needs.”

The course is designed for anyone who works with preschool aged children (no yoga experience necessary). It is focused on empowering teachers, therapists, or caregivers to identify their role as an agent of change, balance, and support for their students. Participants will learn effective, creative, and easy-to-use tools to immediately implement into the classroom, home or therapy.

The workshop will be conducted by Allison Morgan, MA, OTR, who has been working with children of all abilities for over two decades in hospital, school and home

Allison is the founder of Zensational Kids, LLC, a NY/NJ based company integrating yoga into therapeutic services to address student goals and incorporating yoga into Pre-K through 8 classrooms. In addition, Allison is a consultant to the International Association for School Yoga and Mindfulness. She is a facilitator for the Radiant Child Yoga Teacher Training Program training directly with its founder, Shakta Kaur. Allison teaches throughout the country and internationally on various yoga, mindfulness, and therapy topics.

This fall, the Gold Coast Arts Center will present the 3rd Annual Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF) from October 21st to 27th.

Other highlights of the film festival will feature focuses on Women in Film, Israeli film and films for GCIFF’s annual Heroes theme. Most noteworthy is that GCIFF screens many great pre-release films that, in the months to come, will become awards contenders.

Suffolk Society Happenings Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick The Suffolk County Historical Society was gifted with a Mobile Museum from the American Museum of Natural History. The Winnebago is handicapped accessible and outfitted with handson archeological and local cultural displays. It is able to travel to schools throughout Suffolk County and has a teacher on board to educate the students.

The Society’s upcoming exhibit, Back to the Future, features contemporary artists’ work, which reflects elements of the Society’s permanent collection. The show will run from October 18th through November 23rd. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, Chair of the Legislature’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, recently met with Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Suffolk County Historical Society, to discuss the Society’s goals and upcoming projects.

forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do.

Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 33rd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on September 23rd and brought in more than $200,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 170 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock

Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: The Jobin Organization; The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation; BaumEssex Manufacturing; Seafield Center; Moritt Hock & Hamroff; Murray Hill Suites; Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty; Hirshleifers; and Astoria Federal Savings.

Former WABC News Sports Anchor Scott Clark, who served as event emcee and auctioneer, began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at The Creek. He spoke of his personal experiences with alcoholism and addressed the importance of the services LICADD provides to children and families on Long Island. Mr. Clark helped energize the crowd

throughout the award ceremony and live auction and encouraged guests to donate generously to combat the growing crises of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities.

This year’s tournament honored Republican Temporary President and Majority Leader of the New York State Senate, Dean G. Skelos. Senator

Skelos was a key supporter of LICADD’s advocacy efforts over the past year, and played a fundamental role in the State’s passage of I-STOP legislation and the 911 Good Samaritan law. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds presented Senator Skelos with the 2013 Humanitarian Award and expressed sincerest thanks from all in the community for his tireless efforts on behalf of the families the agency serves.

LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “It has been my pleasure to co-chair this event year after year; the players enjoyed a beautiful day on the greens, and we’ve raised considerable funds to support LICADD in executing its mission.”

“The support of our event chairs, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing

Fall Wildlife Festival The Fall Wildlife Festival will take place at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, located within the West End of Jones Beach State Park, on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Also participating in this year’s VisionWalk are 9 year-old Gianna Motto and her 11 year-old sister, Nicolette, of Islip Terrace.

At three months old, Gianna was diagnosed with nystagmus and achromatopsia, a retinal degenerative disease that leads to progressive vision loss. Gianna is still able to see close up, but she has no peripheral vision and cannot see facial expressions. In an effort to support VisionWalk, the sisters created their

own fundraiser, selling handmade earrings and sporting their own slogan: Fight for Gianna’s Sight. “As regular sisters, they argue and fight. Yet, when it comes time for martial arts class and fundraising, they put all the sibling rivalry aside and become a team,” said their mother, Monique Motto.

participate in weekly adaptive martial arts classes, with the help of Third Eye Insight, an organization in West Islip devoted to physical fitness for the blind and visually impaired. Gianna dreams of a day when she can learn to drive, but until then, she and her sister want to help other visually impaired children get involved in

Hundreds of walkers, many of whom are affected by retinal disease, are expected at the free VisionWalk, which also includes children’s activities, a bounce house, refreshments, entertainment, and more. Dogs and strollers are welcome on the 3.1 mile walk course. Event leaders include Co-Chairs

This year, dozens of teams are striving to raise $140,000 to support promising gene therapy, stem cell, and pharmaceuticalbased research that could save and even restore sight. Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it.

Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful.

A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight.

Inching along, but why?

Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction.

Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect.

Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between.

And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing.

Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety.

Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner.

I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her.

There are many factors that play into choosing

where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being.

Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you.

For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college.

Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation.

Attend a College Night!

On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless.

Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair took place on Sunday, September 29th at the Melville Marriott to a crowd of over 600.

The one-day expo was once again organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50.

To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there was free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who needed one, compliments of Patriot Mobility Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who will once again organize Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair on April 27th. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there was “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added.

Some of the speakers were new this year, but many old favorites returned. Classes included two comedy shows, Zumba, laughter yoga, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps.

The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarized the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest.

Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.”

Seeking Seniors

A crew of teenage Scouts and their leaders from Troop 343 (Hauppauge) went on a life changing summer trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico this month.

Philmont covers 214 square miles of vast wilderness with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet.

During their trek, Boy Scout Troop 343’s Crew #809B hiked 81 miles over a period of ten days.

The group of 13 Scouts and their 5 advisors (which consisted of volunteer parents and assistant scoutmasters) carried everything they needed to survive during the trek on their backs while hiking form camp to camp. They participated in backcountry programs along the way including rock climbing, black-powder rifle shooting, spar pole climbing, and tomahawk throwing. The trek included a conservation project where the scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem. Along the trek, the Scouts and their leaders endured tough challenges including backpacking in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, and often-inclement weather.

“They may only meet one other group of Scouts on the trail in an entire day of hiking” according to Backpacker Magazine. “Even in the most crowded destinations, each Scout group camps in isolation, out of sight and sound of all other groups”

The crew made what amounts to a Scouting pilgrimage with their trip to Philmont. Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boys Scouts of America’s premier high adventure camp and the largest youth camp in the world serving nearly one million participants since 1938.

A first-hand experience for Troop 343’s Boy Scout Colin Moe, he added, “In regards to the things we saw and did at Philmont - When we first arrived on the trail,

we encountered a herd of horses that continued to follow us for the first day. We learned the basics the first night of putting up the bear bags (by hanging our food items in a bag, haul it up onto a rope that was strung between two trees, so the bears would not be able to reach it

should they come into our campsite), cooking, cleaning, and setting up camp the Philmont way. We learned it takes a longer time to boil water and cook food at a higher altitude (around 45 minutes to boil water for the spaghetti rather than the usual 10-15 minutes at home or on a campsite on Long Island). We learned what to do if a thunderstorm comes through and lightening is close (get out of an exposed, open area, get a distance of 100 ft apart and get away from trees and areas near lightening strikes). We learned to work together as a team and how to handle specific situations.

We encountered different animals, such as elk, deer, lizards, and a large rattlesnake and sighted an adolescent 100lb black bear that Philmont Scout Ranch had named Steve. There were many activities we also got to do at some of the camps: horseback riding, .50 caliber black powder rifle shooting, rock climbing, spar pole climbing, team building activities, orienteering courses, and tomahawk throwing are just some of the many activities we did. The food choices that were given to us was an adventure of itself. From the wonderful morning beef jerky to the spam lunch and freeze dried dinners it was an eye-awaking experience that none of us expected. It was the trip of a lifetime that I believe none of us will ever forget.”

Walk-Along For Lupus The Lupus Alliance of LIQ, home of the WalkAlong for Lupus, Long Island’s first and longest running lupus walk, will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary Walk-Along for Lupus on October 20th. The walk will be held in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the walk beginning at 10 a.m., rain or shine.

The minimum registration

donation is $20; for a $50 donation, the walker also receives a T-shirt, a for a donation of $500 or more, the walker receives a Visa Gift Card.

The Walk-Along for Lupus is a fun-filled day for the whole family that includes breakfast, lunch, live music, give-aways from sponsors and more.

Picnic tables are set up for families to gather together and enjoy the day, as well

as mingle with others who, like them, have lupus, or love someone who does.

The Lupus Alliance of LIQ was established in 1955, is a 501c3 non-profit based on Long Island, and is the only locally based agency that offers services to those living with lupus, and their families, in the Nassau, Suffolk and Queens areas. Unlike larger non-profits, the Alliance does not receive large

government or corporate grants; instead they have always relied heavily on the donations of individuals whose lives are touched

by Lupus. Without the dedication of these people who collect donations year round and attend the WalkAlong for Lupus every year, the Alliance would not be able to provide the support services that are so desperately needed by families in our local area.

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Annual Ball, An Evening At The Copacabana, was held Friday, September 27th at Crest Hollow Country Club. More than 400 guests joined the 2013 Gala Honorees, West Islip residents Lorraine and John Pace, well known throughout the region for their commitment in the fight against breast cancer.

The Ball raised more than $425,000 to support The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital.

“Starting with the inception of the hospital’s Breast Health Center 20

years ago John and I have valued our relationship with Good Samaritan Hospital,” said Mrs. Pace.

“We look forward to partnering with the hospital to provide outreach, education and programs for cancer survivors on Long Island through the recent alignment of The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and our foundation Breast Cancer Help, Inc.” Good Samaritan has made a significant commitment to caring for the region’s cancer patients through the establishment of its multidisciplinary, comprehensive Cancer Center, where all of the pieces are in place

PEDIATRIC PATIENT FIELD TRIP - Sometimes it takes more than medicine to get well. Medical research recognizes that peer support and socialization for both patients and families is vital to their emotional well-being. On Sunday, September 29th, a group of children fighting cancer at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital proved the point when they boarded a bus and headed to Citi Field for a day of fun and laughter at the New York Mets’ season-ending game. It was the fourth year of the annual outing, organized by the Child Life Specialists at Stony Brook Children’s in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
