DDI To Host Workshop Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, is hosting a conference on Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The full day conference will feature two workshops on the inclusion of young children with ASD in integrated settings as well as eating issues in young children with ASD. The conference will be held on Tuesday, November 5th from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel located at 3845 Veterans Memorial Highway in Ronkonkoma.

The first workshop will focus on supporting young students with ASD in the least restrictive environment. There will be a review of components of successful inclusion models.

Assessment protocols will be discussed, as well as implementation of specific curricular targets, to promote success in the inclusion environment. Ways in which reinforcement can be used strategically in the LRE will be covered. Data collection methods will be reviewed as they relate to ongoing data analysis and decision-making in the integrated setting.

Food selectivity and

other feeding problems can occur in children with ASD. The second workshop will review specific food selectivity issues in young children with autism. An overview of various research-based methods that have been used successfully to treat food selectivity challenges will be reviewed. Specific topics to be covered will include: assessment of food selectivity, creating a dietary record, conducting preference assessments related to food selectivity, selecting an intervention and much more.

The workshop will be conducted Dr. McDonald, an Associate Professor in the Special Education Department of Hofstra University. Dr. McDonald directs the Advanced Certificate Programs including the advanced certificate in ABA and the Advanced Certificate in Severe and Multiple Disabilities. She currently

teaches courses such as Educating Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Creating Effective Learning Communities, Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis and Research Seminars.

Dr. McDonald has over 20 years experience directing programs for students with autism from early intervention through adulthood. Dr. McDonald completed her PhD in Learning Theory at the CUNY Graduate Center and is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst— Doctoral level.

Dr. McDonald currently serves as the President of the Association for Science in Autism treatment (ASAT) and serves on the board of the NYS CEC as well as a number of advisory boards.

The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. This year’s black tie affair will honor SJC President S. Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D., who will be retiring in June 2014. Proceeds from this event will be used to establish the S. Elizabeth A. Hill Scholarship Fund.

“It has been a great blessing and a true pleasure to work with S. Elizabeth for so many years, as she represents the best of leadership and integrity in every sense of the word,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Nancy Connors. “I will miss working with her every day, but I am grateful that she is an alumna of the College and will never

be that far away.”

One of the region’s most influential women, S. Elizabeth has been president of SJC since 1997.

Since her inauguration, she has overseen the expansion of two campuses, most notably the construction of a state-of-the-art Business and Technology Center and 24.8-acre premiere outdoor sports facility on the Long Island Campus, as well as launching a comprehensive, capital Master Plan for the Brooklyn Campus that included a 44,000-squarefoot athletic complex.

Under her leadership, the College’s enrollment and range of academic offerings have continuously increased while tuition has remained consistently among the lowest in the New York metropolitan area.

During her tenure as president, S. Elizabeth secured several large grants from the federal

government, including the largest in the College’s history. She was also responsible for securing successful major and estate gifts, including a bequest of $4 million to endow scholarships for students in need. S. Elizabeth has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for her leadership and lifelong dedication to the field of education.

A magna cum laude alumna of SJC, S. Elizabeth is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. She received an M.A. in History from Columbia University and studied theology and scripture in Rome under the auspices of Gregorian University.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its Walk, Run & Ride for Autism on September 29th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised over $47,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services.

“This event is all about

coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairman of the event Brian Brunjes.

“This year we not only met our financial goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of families who need services for their loved ones.”

Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the fun filled day. The day kicked off with

the Matthew Stansky Memorial Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way.

For the second year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more.

Raising over $22,000, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Michael Cunniff, Liam Kenny and Michael Sardone have proved to be worthy honorees.

Walking For Alzheimer’s Following the success of its two previous Walks this summer, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will have its 2nd Annual Westhampton Beach Walk for Alzheimer’s & Fall Festival on October 26th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and the Walk at 10 a.m.

Lunch and entertainment will follow afterwards at 11:45 a.m.

The opening ceremony will feature entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells of New York, recognition of all participating team captains and a Hope Garden ceremony. After the Walk, participants who raise over $100 will be treated to lunch.

There is no registration fee for teams or walkers who raise donations for the

Walk. For those who wish to register the day of the Walk, general admission is $25.00 for adults, $10.00 for teens, and $5.00 for children two years of age and older. Children under 2 are free. Family discount packages (two adults and two children) are available for $30. All the proceeds will go to support ADRC’s mission to fight the dreaded disease.

The Westhampton Beach Walk for Alzheimer’s commemorates the twoyear anniversary of the grand opening of ADRC’s office in Southampton.

This satellite office was designed to allow care consultants to schedule family meetings and provide information for families or individuals on the East End of Long Island who are coping with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-

leading cause of death.

As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, 60,000 of whom live here on Long Island.

One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally.

Some people lucked out.

Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be.

They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to.

As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both.

But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos.

Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist.

Let’s all hang in there.

Together, we can – and will – get through this.

And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family.

Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree.

Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother.

I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in

his stroller, dressed as a pea!

As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride.

Each day is a blessing.

Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things.

To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other.

We had something people don’t get today.” This quote from Paul Prudhomme exemplifies what experts have been saying all along. The simplest social

group, the family, has been torn apart by modern happenings.

In school, I take a class called Sociology, in which we learn that the most powerful group is a family.

Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing.

Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.

Mobile Science Classroom The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will demonstrate a new mobile, science-education outreach program, Traveling Classroom: Discovering The Universe, on Wednesday, October 30th, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Oldfield Middle School in Greenlawn. Vanderbilt science educators will show Science Club members and their advisor, Drew Lockwood, how to explore astronomy with the Classroom’s five, hands-on, interactive stations.

The Traveling Classroom - housed in a 37-foot customized recreational

vehicle - is a gift to the Vanderbilt Museum from the American Museum of Natural History, which also developed the curriculum for the successful astronomy and astrophysics program.

The program features state-of-the-art technology, engaging professionally developed curricula,

and a downloadable teacher-resource guide, Reinheimer said.

Discovering the Universe will bring cutting-edge science education to students in grades 3 through 12. The program will be offered at no cost to a limited number of schools.

Discovering the Universe is designed to meet New York State standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) and directly addresses a number of the articulated MST standards. The Classroom consists of five stations: Light, Telescope, Digital Imaging, 3-D Universe, and Gravity. Each offers handson interactive exhibitions that engage visitors in different topics. Moving

through the exhibition effectively reflects the stepby-step process by which astronomers study the Universe.

Preand post-visit materials will be provided to classroom teachers to enhance the student learning experience. The Vanderbilt will survey participating educators to measure the success of the program.

The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium has 100,000 annual visitors, which include more than 50,000 schoolchildren from more than 100 Long Island school districts.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports.

The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And

while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.

Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com.

The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports.

“Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.

Charity Soccer Game A SCOUT IS HELPFUL - Boy Scouts from Troop 125 (Commack) volunteered at this year’s FARE Walk for Food Allergy held at Eisenhower Park on October 13th. Ghosts & Goblins On Parade On Thursday, October 10th, Smithtown East High School boys varsity soccer team played a charity soccer game for Angela’s House, a Hauppauge-based nonprofit organization that assists medical Fragile children. Smithtown Recreation Department’s Annual Ghost and Goblins Event will be held on Saturday, October 26th, with a raindate of October 27th, at Brady Park on Maple Avenue in Smithtown.

There will be games and prizes for all, as well as pony rides by Tack and Go Farms and Doodles the

Clown making amazing balloon sculptures. During the event, there will be a costume parade and raffle prizes awarded every half hour. There is no charge for the event.

The Recreation Department requests a free-will donation of a nonperishable food item for the Smithtown Food Bank.

Due to the generosity of the Smithtown residents who enjoyed the day last year, the Recreation Department was able to make a very large food donation to the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry.

sexual abuse.

“My office is collecting used cell phones, which will be distributed to VIBS’ clients who can use them to dial 911 in case of an emergency,” said Legislator Nowick. “Please feel free to drop off your phone at my district office,

located at 59 Landing Avenue in Smithtown, Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. For directions, please call 631.854.3900,” added Legislator Nowick.

VIBS offers group or individual counseling for adults and teens, as

well as for children who have witnessed domestic violence or who have been sexually assaulted.

Its advocates can provide court accompaniment, information on victims’ rights, assistance with law enforcement and criminal justice agencies and with

the Crime Victims Board.

VIBS also has an Elder Abuse program where they provide counseling, home visits and case management to elderly people who are victims of emotional, physical, financial or sexual abuse.

Trained and certified

counselors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help any victim of domestic violence or sexual assault.

Rotary Guest Speaker On Thursday, October 17th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Fern Pasley Hill, Co-Founder & Director of Hospitality, Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch in Riverhead, Long Island, speaking on the topic of Adoption.

Fern’s presentation on Adoption mentioned that over 400,000 children in America are without families.

115,000 of these children are eligible for adoption in the United States while many others are in need of a good foster home. Millions of children are in need of adoption world wide and all of us are needed to help in this endeavor.

For the birth mother, the decision to plan for the baby’s adoption requires selflessness, courage, strength and lots of love...knowing that her circumstances at the time are best suited for the child’s welfare.

The adopted parents who cannot have their own child or want to add to their family, want to provide a loving home, with devotion to the adopted child, have a financially stable environment to raise the child and nurture the child’s dreams and potential.

sits on a 70 acre farm purchased in 1978, with the first boy being welcomed in 1980. The Ranch was a dream of their oldest son Timothy who spoke of wanting a place for homeless children to live, be loved and raised with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy. That dream could have died with him in 1972, when he was struck at age 13 and

killed while riding his bike to school. Fern channeled her grief into a book, Graduation to Glory, about Timothy, his life, his love for God and all of this creation, his love for children and his dream of a Ranch.

Fern serves as Director of Hospitality for hundreds of visitors and both Fern and Jerry have received many awards over the years, including being inducted into the Long Island Hall of Fame.

Next week, Jerry Hill will be visiting the Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise to discuss more about the history and beginnings of the Ranch.

Rotary is a global fellowship of individuals who are leaders in their fields of endeavor.

For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet.

“We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home.
