Chris has served as President and board member of the Long Island Lumber Association and board member for the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association and the Cleary School for the Deaf.

He and his brother Bill, and Nassau Suffolk Lumber & Supply, have been involved with supporting St. Charles Hospital functions including the St. Charles Gala, the Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament and

numerous health fairs. In 2002 Chris and Bill received the Theodore Roosevelt Award from St. Charles for their continued support.

Providing a focused display of the school’s senior student-artists’ unique talents, the annual East Islip High School Festival of Fine Art was held during the week of April 15th.

A large crowd of happy students and proud parents, friends and teachers celebrated the creative spirit evoked by the festival at the event’s April 18th evening reception at the high school’s library.

“The reception is always the highlight and culminating event of our festival,” said East Islip art teacher William Melendez, who is retiring after this school year. “The seniors displayed their amazing work with pride.”

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really.

Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really?

Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot?

For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life.

Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no?

Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

Feinstein Visit The East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy recently learned about simulation dolls and how they are used by hospital doctors during a visit to The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset.

The seniors also enjoyed a Protocol Design and Development

presentation and broke into teams for a special Research Boot Camp to identify “hot topics” for proposed research.

Long Island native, artist Elaine Faith Thompson was chosen to paint and design the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship commemorative poster.

The U.S. Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th30th, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton.

Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she worked all winter to complete the painting. It was by far, one of the most detailed and challenging paintings of her career.

The Great Gatsby, Nassau County Museum of Art’s 2013 Museum Ball, celebrates the glamorous Gold Coast era immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.

In the spirit of the Fitzgerald novel and the new Baz Luhrmann film, the Museum Ball through décor and the attire of Ball guests, will evoke that unforgettable era of fabulous parties and wealth on Long Island’s North Shore.

The 2013 Ball, to be held on Saturday, June 8th at 7 p.m., returns to the grounds of museum’s own historic Gold Coast mansion, the former Frick Estate, Clayton.

This elegant black tie evening of dining and dancing to the music of The Alex Donner Orchestra, along with a spectacular silent auction, is the museum’s major annual fundraiser. Always a highlight of the local social calendar, the Ball provides an important component of the museum’s operating budget, offering support for an ambitious schedule of exhibitions and stimulating educational programs for adults, students, families and school groups. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has been named the 2013 Agency of the Year by the Nassau Division of the National Association of Social Workers of New York State (NASW-NYS Nassau Division). The entire park included beautifully-designed bathhouses and nauticalthemed trash receptacles.

By the mid-1930s, Jones Beach welcomed over 100,000 visitors on its busiest summer days.

The exhibition will explore these two famous spots not only in their heydays, but will also look at what has happened during their decline, resurrection, and redefinitions over the past several decades.

Where some once thought the sun might be setting on these two historic beaches, millions still pack their bags every summer to go there and make new memories.

The perfect summer exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach will give visitors a fun and energetic history of how two iconic coastal areas became lasting people’s playgrounds.

This exhibition is sponsored by Suffolk County, Astoria Federal Savings, Empire National Bank, Teachers Federal Credit Union and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection.

The exhibition will include a dazzling array of objects (including historic beachwear and amusement park artifacts), rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips.

Coney Island went from an unknown strip of sand to the world’s most famous seaside resort in the 19th century. People began going there shortly after a shell-crushed road connected it to the rest of Brooklyn in 1829. But it gradually became rowdy entertainment for the masses, home to three major amusement parks, and the birthplace of the roller coaster and the hot dog. By 1920, accessible by the subway, Coney Island was dubbed the “Nickel Empire.” But not everyone was charmed by the spectacle.

Jones Beach was different: “Flowers, lawns, shrubs greet you, instead of papers, lunch boxes and dirt. Nothing is crowded, the sidewalks are wide, the buildings are low and attractively designed. The beach is apparently endless.”

Master builder Robert Moses planned Jones Beach as an antidote to what he regarded as the excesses of Coney Island.

Ride For Life Rides By

Chris Pendergast and his Ride for Life fundraiser paid an inspirational visit to East Islip Middle School on May 9th. As Pendergast departed from the front of the middle school, heading to his next stop at West Islip High School, the middle school’s students gathered outside to cheer him on and a small band played.

The mission of

Pendergast’s charity group is to help advance research in finding a cure for ALS, to support patients and their families, and to provide ALS-related information.

At Ride for Life’s annual event, ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs on local roads and highways, accompanied by supporters in an effort to raise funds for a cure and create awareness for their disease.

According to teacher librarian Valerie Ware, the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society Committee – led by members Samantha Carroll, Julia Fusco, Jackie Ginty and Victoria Goldfader – raised $528 for the Ride for Life cause as part of the NJHS’s efforts to help cure ALS.

The Bay Shore – Brightwaters Public Library has joined Library Ideas™’, a worldwide network of Public Library websites that offer access to over 3 million songs including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists.

The Freegal Music Service recently announced the availability of free mobile apps for registered cardholders of subscribing libraries. The Freegal Music apps are available in the Apple® App Store and Google Play®.

Under the terms of the agreement, registered card holders of the Bay Shore – Brightwaters Public Library can download three Freegal Music tracks in the MP3 format each week at no direct

With a 10-1 home-field victory over Centereach on May 3rd, the East Islip varsity baseball team clinched the Suffolk County League IV Title for 2013.

Nick Osburn blasted a two-RBI double in East Islip’s action-packed 10run second inning, staking out a 6-0 lead for the Redmen. Mike Demarest pitched a three-hitter, allowing only one run with eight strikeouts and one walk. The team had previously vanquished Centereach by equally dominant scores on both May 1st (17-4) and April 30th (14-3).

“Winning the League IV title is an outstanding achievement that the

players should be proud of,” said coach Sal Ciampi.

“They have put themselves in position to make a run at the county title.”

East Islip’s record stands at 16-2 in conference play and 18-2 overall as they march into the playoffs. A pair of wins over Copiague on May 10th earned them top seed in Suffolk County.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Redmen came out ahead by an 8-1 score. Demarest pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.

Casey Stengel went 3-for4, hitting three RBIs, while Nick Osburn went 3-for-4 and hit two runs and two RBIs. East Islip shellacked Copiague 15-1 in the

second game, with pitcher Dave Palmer throwing a two-hitter with five strikeouts, allowing only one earned run. Nick Osburn hit two runs and two RBIs, going 2-for-3, and Ken Rotunno hit two runs and three RBIs, going 2-for-5.

The doubleheader victories ensured that East Islip was ranked first in the Large Schools bracket in Suffolk County’s Class AA playoffs.

Woman Of Distinction Honored At an award ceremony held in Albany on May 7th, Senator Lee M. Zeldin honored Erica Boynton of Brentwood as the 3rd Senate District’s 2013 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction.”

SEPTA FUNDRAISER - Recently, SEPTA held its annual fundraiser at Captain Bill’s, where Nancy Kavanagh was honored for her years of hard work and dedication on behalf of Special Education students throughout Bay Shore Schools. Over 150 people attended and participated in raffles and auctions that generated close to $10,000.

The money raised was subsequently donated to Dr. Russell Endes, Director of Special Education, to be distributed throughout the Bay Shore Schools to benefit our entire Special Education program.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the country’s largest day summer school for the arts, located in Wheatley Heights, has partnered with Long Island Community Foundation in a new program of “micro grants” to provide Brentwood High School students with support for their studies in music. The program will help them obtain essential music supplies and private lessons.

In addition, some Brentwood students will be selected for three thousand dollar tuition scholarships to study at Usdan this summer, and the grants will help them with the costs of their daily transportation to the Center. It is anticipated that the micro grants will range from approximately $100 - $400 each, with a goal of supporting the musical needs of approximately fifteen Brentwood students during the 2012-2013 school year.

Speaking of the new program, Dale Lewis, Usdan Center’s Executive Director, said, “This funding is intended to recognize and support the student musicians at BHS, and to pay tribute to their dedicated and talented music teachers.

The success of Brentwood’s music program is a big

story being played out in small increments by Long Island school and studio music teachers, one good deed at a time.”

The new grants are designed to allow students to obtain teacher-approved music supplies or music study in order to further the their school, college and career aspirations in the arts. Already, nine BHS students have had five private lessons each, and their private teachers have endorsed the program’s spirit with their offer of reduced-fee lessons.

The process of awarding Usdan’s grants begins with the recommendation of a Brentwood teacher on behalf of one of his or her students. Once the district’s supervisor has approved the grant request, approved items are purchased for the students. These include strings for violin and cello students, reeds and mouthpieces for wind and brass students, and lessons and transportation for enrichment programming that is a goal of the program.

David Okorn, Executive Director of the LI Community Foundation believes in the program’s impact on children in a high needs Long Island community: “Research shows us that young people

who have access to the arts not only perform better in school, but in life. This program reaches out to low-income students faced with economic obstacles that keep them from fully developing their talents.

It’s a winning opportunity and we are pleased to be a part of it.”

Usdan’s grant was made possible by the Elizabeth Pritzker Endowment Fund, a field of interest fund at the Long Island Community Foundation. The Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) is the Island’s community foundation, making grants to improve our region and helping donors with their philanthropy since 1978.

LICF is a division of The New York Community Trust.

Continuing the strong relationship with North Shore-LIJ that has been built over the past year since the Medical Academy was formed, more than 55 professional employees of Southside Hospital were in attendance at the event, including Executive Director Donna Moravick and members of the hospital’s community services department such as Vincent Cunningham, Kerri Fontaine, Edward Frasier and Jack Rosenberg.

Prominent doctors from North ShoreLIJ spent many hours sitting and talking to the large number of students in attendance, all from grades 8-12.

“The event proved to be a huge success,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer. He mainly attributed this result to the hard work and dedication provided by Southside representatives Rosenberg and Fontaine, who began working with Malinowitzer last October to put the entire program together, forging a true partnership for the benefit of the students of East Islip.

Coinciding with and complementing the medical event was East Islip High School’s annual blood drive, hosted by the Science Honor Society with the assistance of the National Honor Society in the school’s auxiliary gym.

“On behalf of the Medical Career Academy and the entire district, we would like to thank Southside Hospital and the North Shore-LIJ family for their generous ongoing support,” said Malinowitzer. “We look forward to next year’s second annual Medical Career Day.”

Creative, fashionforward students at East Islip High School recently participated in the Vans Custom Culture Art Competition, a national high school shoe customization contest in which schools from across the U.S. compete for a chance to win funding for their art programs.

Each registered school

including East Islip received four pairs of blank Vans sneakers, ready to be customized in four themes: Art, Music, Action Sports and Local Flavor.

“Our students worked very hard at developing their overall New York theme and each pair of shoes explored the individual customization themes,” explained art

teacher Heather Toomey.

“The students researched about their shoes and went through a long planning process before painting their blank shoes.

Each pair is unique and demonstrates the talent of these students, and as a group they came up with some great concepts for this year’s contest.”

The East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy partnered with North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital to hold the very first annual Medical Career Day at the high school on April 30th.

The event featured over a dozen different interactive exhibits going on in the high school’s auxiliary gym, including an operating room, a pharmacy, and nursing, nutrition, radiology, respiratory and hazardous materials units. A variety of other informational tables in the school lobbies included material on diabetes counseling, neuroscience, pediatrics and human resources, among other fields of interest to potential medical students.

Workshop lectures were held in the auditorium during every period of the school day, educating the students about different health issues.

Going Green South Country Elementary School students from Room 25 have gone green! After watching a few videos about a fabulous product called Idea Paint, these 5th graders decided to find a way to reduce paper consumption in their classroom.

Idea Paint is a white board paint that can be applied to any nonporous surface. Students in Room 25 decided that their desk tops would make for wonderful whiteboard workspaces that are easy to clean and highly

motivational as tools within the classroom.

The process of acquiring Idea Paint was also a wonderful learning experience for the students.

Ideas about how the paint would be used, how the funds could be raised, and how the students could convince others of the value of this project were driven 100% by these 10 and 11 year-old students.

Fundraising for the project was done through the website DonorsChoose. com, a great idea pitched

Meanwhile, parents attended workshops on a host of topics, including “How to be Successful in Middle School and Beyond”, “Developing an Independent/Responsible Middle Schooler” and “Keys for Effective Communication with Your

Middle Schooler.”

At the conclusion of the workshops, parents and students were reunited to share refreshments and speak with representatives from the many organizations which provide resources to Bay Shore families, such as YES, BOCES, EOC, PFA, and others. Everyone involved found the evening both informative and fun.

Amanda has also enjoyed taking dance for the last 15 years. In her spare time, Amanda volunteers at the East Islip Public Library on the Teen Advisory Board, has her own Keep Islip Clean adopt-a-spot that she has maintained for many years, and she has participated in the coastal clean-ups at Robert Moses State Park, Bay Shore Marina, and Heckscher Park for the last 8 years.
