The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council will honor Joseph Sinicropi, C0-CEO and COO of CBLPath, Inc., at the 41st Annual Good Scout William H. Sample Memorial Golf Tournament on Monday, June 17thThe tournament will take place simultaneously at Nissequogue Golf Club in Saint James and St. George’s Golf & Country Club in East Setauket with a mid- morning shotgun start. Following the tournament there will be a reception and dinner banquet at Nissequogue Golf Club which will include raffles, silent and live auctions, as well as awards and recognitions for golfers. All are welcome to join us for a great day of golf and fellowship.

As a child, Joe was involved in Scouting and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1971; Scouting’s highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting.

He joined the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of Suffolk County Council in 2008 and since 2010, has served as an Executive Vice President on various committees including Compensation and Benefits, Strategic Planning, and Finance.

Joe is currently the CoCEO & COO of CBLPath, Inc., a leading provider of sub-specialized anatomic pathology and molecular diagnostic laboratory services. He has more than 27 years of experience in Finance and Operations, including CFO and COO positions for Del Laboratories, Twin Laboratories, and Synthetic Industries, Inc. Additionally, Joe’s experience includes 10 years with the international accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche, LLP. He is a Certified Public Accountant and holds an M.B.A in Accounting from St. John’s University and a B.A. in Economics from Fordham University.

The tournament is named in honor of Mr. Sample, who was a distinguished and

dedicated Scouter whose personal devotion enriched the lives of thousands of Suffolk County Scouts.

He served as President of the Suffolk County Council and was honored in 1995 as a “Good Scout” at the Council’s 23rd Annual Golf Tournament.

The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council provides valuebased leadership and character building programs for more than 26,000 youth members annually.

Scouting provides the skills and integrity to be prepared for, and successful in life.

The organization not only serves young men but also offers coed programs such as the Learning for Life school to career program, Venturing, Exploring and special needs Scouting programs.

In celebration of National Women’s Health Week and in recognition of the numerous scientific accomplishments achieved at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and beyond, a group of female scientists, Advancing Women in Science and Medicine (AWSM), hosted its 2nd Annual Awards Breakfast on May 17th. Scientists, educators, business and community leaders from the region attended the event to celebrate excellence and achievements of women in

science.

“Women face unique barriers to success and are less likely to seek recognition for their achievements,” said Christine Metz, PhD, investigator at the Feinstein Institute and president of AWSM. “AWSM promotes the cultivation of an environment where women who have a passion and talent for science excel, instead of being held back by stereotypes, and they are recognized for their excellence.”

Over the past several years, the Girl Scouts have put effort behind trying to encourage their members to develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. To support these efforts, AWSM invited 10th and 11th grade Girl Scouts from Nassau County to the Feinstein Institute to learn about careers in biomedical research, and created the AWSM Girl Scout Award.

Laurie Glimcher, MD, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss dean and professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and provost for Medical Affairs at Cornell University, also spoke at the event and was awarded the 2013 AWSM Award for Excellence. She was conferred this award due to her outstanding achievements in science and medicine, her strong leadership skills, and her commitment to advancing women’s careers.

Days To Remember This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic.

As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,

I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!).

Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time.

Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I

still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th.

Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening?

Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have.

Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation.

The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle.

So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

Reading Adventure Project With summer around the corner, Huntington Learning Centers are kicking off its annual Reading Adventure program for children ages kindergarten through eighth grade.

To participate, students first choose books from Huntington’s preselected book lists, which include a wide range of high-interest book choices for all grade levels and reading abilities.

Reading Adventure underscores the excitement that a good book can bring into a child’s life. Each participating reader receives a reading “passport” in which he or she record the books he or she reads and writes a journal entry about each. The entire program encourages students to think of reading as a way to explore new ideas, interests, places and

people.

“We believe that summer is an ideal time to nurture the reading habit because children have more time to read for pleasure than they do during the school year,” says Dr. Raymond Huntington, founder and chairman of Huntington Learning Center. “Our Reading Adventure program is designed with fun in mind. Our experts have identified a variety of books for children of all ages and reading abilities - stories that engage children and get them excited about books.

Experience has proven to us time and time again that the more children read, the better readers they become and the more they enjoy it - and choose it as an activity they want to do.”

Huntington’s Reading Adventure program runs from May through August.

During the celebration each child is recognized for his/her achievement and receives a special award.

Pride For Youth June is Gay Pride Month. It is a month-long celebration for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals to affirm their self-identity and bring attention to issues like equal rights, tolerance and community-building.

Pride for Youth, a project of Long Island Crisis Center, helps LGBTQ young people year-round to achieve self-acceptance, selfesteem, empowerment, socialization and healthy lifestyles.

Established in 1993, it has been addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ youth for twenty years.

Individual and family

Counseling is provided, free of charge, to LGBTQ youth up to age 24. All services are confidential and provided to youth and/or youth with their families in a supportive environment.

The counseling staff is comprised of licensed social workers and mental health professionals.

Counseling appointments are scheduled from Monday through Friday.

Counselors develop treatment plans that meet the unique needs of each individual client. Travel reimbursement, via public transportation, is also available.

“Young people who identify as LGBTQ find

it difficult to navigate, on their own, the school, community and family environments that may be un-accepting and unwelcoming,” states Pete Carney, Director of Pride for Youth. “Our services provide support for them to gain the confidence and self-assurance they need to grow into healthy and productive adults.”

The 3rd place team consisted of Sara Chishti, Jessica Reuter and Farria Ashfaq. Coming in 4th place was the team of Lucille Bootman, Kyle Cassidy and Peter Collorone.

Bay Shore High School student Marilyn Mott was recognized at the Suffolk County Holocaust Remembrance Day program sponsored by the Long Island Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island and Suffolk County government.

Ms. Mott was awarded a Suffolk County Proclamation for Excellence for her Holocaust-related work both in the classroom

and the community at large. Specifically, Marilyn engaged in outstanding research on Kristallnacht during her Holocaust Studies course, taught by Mrs. Adrienne Morpurgo, and, in her International Baccalaureate History course, taught by Mrs. Maddy Padilla, Marilyn participated in an Intergenerational Roundtable program where she conversed with Holocaust survivors who offered eyewitness

testimonies of their experiences.

In cooperation with the aforementioned teachers, Mr. Joseph Lemke, Director of Social Studies, nominated Marilyn “in recognition of her commitment to sustaining the stories of those who experienced the Holocaust to insure that we never forget this tragic event.”

Top Young Artist

Congratulations to Bay Shore High School Senior Marisol Nazario, whose artwork has been accepted to the prestigious Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition at The Heckscher Museum in Huntington.

A reception and award ceremony took place on April 6th and the exhibition ran from March 29th to April 21st. This marks the first time Bay Shore High School was among the

schools featured in this exhibition. The show’s reception proved an exciting evening for all the featured students and the museum overflowed with attendees.

2013 marks the show’s 17th year, and 49 public and private schools participated, submitting 288 works of which 80 were selected by Curator Lisa Chalif. Marisol Nazario, whose piece “Cloud Lane” was among the 80

works chosen for this phenomenal exhibition, is an outstanding wellrounded student who has distin- guished herself in art, track and high level academic classes such as IB and AP. Marisol has also been selected as a recipient of a grant from St Joseph’s College for full tuition for 4 years of studies there. Congratulations to Marisol!

Who is responsible if a teen is injured after sneaking into a closed skateboard park? Is a pet store owner liable if a child is bitten by another customer’s dog? On April 25th, these and other negligence cases were tried

by Bay Shore High School students in the High School’s Annual Law DayMock Trial competition, organized and sponsored by the Bay Shore High School Social Studies Department.

Clean Streets Project

In a recent community effort dubbed “The Clean Streets Project” over 300 volunteers, of all ages, pitched in to toss out the trash and beautify their hometowns.

Residents picked up and removed more than five tons of garbage from the streets and empty lots, 60 locations in total, of Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore. The program, now in its third year, helps bring the community together, restores dignity to the hamlets and serves as a positive deterrent to crime.

“The Clean Streets Project demonstrates what a united community, a local business, a community organization

and residents can do when they join forces,” says Marcos Maldonado, project co-chair. “We were so pleased to have the support of Applebee’s and our other sponsors who once again went above and beyond what a community could hope for in supporting our neighborhood efforts.”

“For the last several years, our residents have risen to the occasion and have shown what they can accomplish when they come together as a community,” says Mike Ramos, co-organizer of the Clean Streets Project.

“With businesses like Applebee’s lending their support, it makes you feel like someone has your back and you’re not working

alone.”

This year, National Waste Services donated carting containers for the collected trash while Suffolk Transportation Service provided busses to transport volunteers to each site. Applebee’s provided both a meeting place for the volunteers and helped kick off the day with a free flapjack breakfast that attracted volunteers.

In the afternoon, Applebee’s fired up grills in its parking lot and greeted the returning volunteers with a giant outdoor barbeque.

According to Maldonado, the spring cleanup will continue to be an annual community event.

TRACK MEET EARNS MEDALS - Freshman and sophomore athletes on East Islip’s varsity track and field team participated in the Frosh/Soph Championship meet at Longwood High School in Middle Island on May 15th, earning five medals in a strong showing by EI’s next generation of track stars. Zachary Acocella came in third in both the sophomore triple jump and 400-meter run. Redmen In Playoffs

The East Islip varsity baseball team advanced another round on May 20th with a 4-1 home victory over fifth-seeded Deer Park, but were eliminated from the playoffs two days later.

Paul Dondero went twofor-three against Deer Park, scoring two runs,

while star pitcher Mike Demarest pitched a fivehitter complete game, striking out four Deer Park batters and giving up only one earned run and one walk.

The top seed in the Large Schools bracket in Suffolk County’s Class AA playoffs, East Islip began the

postseason with a 5-4 loss at home to Half Hollow Hills West on May 15. They rebounded two days later to vanquish Half Hollow Hills, 9-2.

On May 22nd, the Redmen stumbled against visiting Longwood, losing 6-4 in a losers bracket elimination game.

MEASURING THE FIELD - Third-graders in Jennifer Beebe and Dennis Clancy’s class at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary have been studying the principle of area during this school year. After initial instruction in the classroom, the students took their knowledge outside. Using a measuring wheel to ascertain the length and width of the lacrosse field adjacent to RCK, the students concluded that the area of the field measured 59,512 square feet.

East Islip High School officially unveiled a new 3.5-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system last July, a gridconnected system installed in the school’s courtyard over a period of two weeks. Over the course of the 2012-2013 school year, the system has served to educate students on how solar power is generated and its benefits in reducing the use of fossil fuel. The solar panels continue to collect the sun’s energy and convert it to DC power, which is then converted to AC power by microinverters and exported back to the grid.

“The interactive PV system includes a data acquisition package that allows students, teachers and community members to access real-time system performance over the Internet,” said Solar Dad and Sons President Ken Sanger. “This live working resource is designed to promote student and community understanding of renewable energy.”

Sanger’s company installed the system with the help of partners such as Direct Grid Technologies, Energy Inc., Eragy, Home Performance Technologies, Solartech Renewables, Tough Trac and DiGiovanna Bros. Landscaping, all of whom donated their hardware or services to enable the photovoltaic solar system’s installation. Among those attending the unveiling last summer were Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Home Performance Technologies President Mark Gunthner and East Islip’s Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo even sent East Islip a congratulatory letter regarding the solar system.

Sustainable Long Island was among the organizations in attendance. “We were delighted to attend East Islip High School’s unveiling of the photovoltaic solar system,” said a SLI representative, “and we are thrilled

to be partnering with East Islip High School to provide internship opportunities for their students.”

“East Islip High School is on a mission to keep students aware of the latest technology education,” said Sanger.

“At Solar Dad and Sons, we are very keen to support this excellent facility. It is very moving to see and feel how

worthwhile it is to educate the students, who are our future. This will inspire them to explore solar technology and create renewable solutions for energy needs in this world.”

“It is important that the kids that inherit this world become more conscious about conserving resources through renewable and alternative energy,” said Direct Grid Technologies Director Louis Squeo, whose firm provided the micro-inverters to convert the energy.

Sanger attributes much of the impetus behind the system to Israel Malinowitzer, the director of East Islip’s Career Academy program. “This project is an outgrowth of Mr. Malinowitzer’s vision of using technology as a medium for connecting the school system and businesses in the area with the Career Academy at East Islip

High School,” said Sanger. “Solar Dad and Sons has a longstanding partnership with Mr. Malinowitzer in which we support the students with new and engaging subjects, and this solar PV system installation accomplishes that goal.”

Since the beginning of this school year, the photovoltaic solar system has provided a steady stream of information for students. “I’m proud to report that the system has been performing flawlessly,” said Sanger, who calls it “a gift that keeps on giving.” He added, “This solar PV system is producing energy from the sun for the high school to utilize, but it’s more than that. It is a hands-on experience and an educational tool for the students now and in the future.”

Sanger also shared his knowledge of and experience with solar PV at the school’s Earth Day event this April. “I was invited to communicate the growing need for renewable energy and to encourage students to think of questions and spark curiosity regarding solar energy solutions,” he explained. “The students impressed me with their passion and concern for our energy needs now and in the future.”

The East Islip photovoltaic system is just the beginning for Sanger. “Our goal is to stimulate interest and confidence in the use of solar photovoltaic systems for a wide variety of applications by creating successful partnerships such as this,” he said. “Next year we are planning to expand this education tool beyond the school walls to the Town of Islip community. This donation provides an impetus for investment and is a demonstration that renewable energy solutions are feasible.”

Founded in the 20022003 school year by Mrs. Renee Sussman, the dance program has grown to include well over two hundred students, an array of dance courses, a large

afterschool dance club and a performance company.

In the words of Mrs. Sussman, “I try to create an atmosphere where students can be given artistic license and take ownership of their work.”

Bay Shore Middle School 8th grader George Rettaliata recently received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his volunteer work in a special-needs classroom.

George was recognized last year as Upstander of the Month by the Holocaust

Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County.

Middle School Principal Dr. LaQuita Outlaw presented George with a letter from President Obama and a certificate at a recent National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) meeting.

George’s fellow NJHS members showed their support with applause and cheers as his proud parents looked on. Congratulations to George and his family on another wonderful accomplishment.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis.

Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses!

For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class.

This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences.

All of the stress that comes with waiting for

your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down.

These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over.

These students have done it, they have completed their journey.

Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip!

Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter

grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career.

The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall.

This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic.

So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.
