Calling All Artists The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches.

Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th.

Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed in the Art Museum, along with the

Coney Island and Jones Beach exhibition from September 12th through 29th. The reception is free and open to the public.

Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to art and history as it relates to Long Island. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for students 6-17 and $1 on Thursdays. After years of coordination, the National Science Center’s Mobile Discovery Center van came to Connetquot Elementary School and East Islip Middle School for a series of special interactive science demonstrations.

The Mobile Discovery Center, sponsored by a partnership between the National Science Center and the U.S. Army, is housed in a 18-wheeler van and staffed by Army military and Department

of Army civilian personnel.

Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Connetquot were treated to a 50-minute presentation about electricity and magnetism which included a Van de Graaff generator, Tesla coil and plasma ball.

“Both students and teachers were intrigued and delighted by this amazing presentation,” said teacher Leslie Davis, who helped facilitate the long campaign to enable the visit for Connetquot.

“It was designed to show that studying science and math is fun as well as essential to the students’ future.”

After its stay at Connetquot, the MDC van moved on to East Islip Middle School for tours by the school’s eighthgraders, organized by middle school teacher Darcie Schlott.

Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time.

For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you.

And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never

worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch.

The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems.

But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes.

I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You

didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag?

I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint.

Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask.

If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything?

Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

Out of 89 Students in the Suffolk Aviation Academy only eighteen were inducted into this Lifetime honor.

The EJ Autism Foundation recently provided teacher Jennifer Beebe with a MimioTeach interactive whiteboard system for use in her and Dennis Clancy’s thirdgrade classroom at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School.

This donation was one of six grants from EJ Autism to district teachers, part of the organization’s continuing efforts to support East Islip’s schools and special needs programs

across Long Island that work with children diagnosed with autism.

The MimioTeach turns any dry erase board into an interactive whiteboard.

With the use of this system, Beebe and Clancy’s lessons have been enhanced by greater interactivity. “It keeps students focused and interested,” said Beebe.

“They are excited to use and learn about the new technology.”

and never realized how large a problem it is,” she said. “It was eye-opening.”

Linz, a graduate of John F. Kennedy Elementary School, participated in tennis and golf while at the middle school and high school. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and East Islip’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy. “I loved the Career Academy,” she said.

“I learned so much from being part of it.”

She will attend Utica College this fall, and plans to study physical therapy.

“From what I learned at the Youth Summit, I now feel empowered to help the less fortunate in my future career,” she said. “This was a learning experience that I will never forget.”

Marking History

Stop MRSA For the past couple of years, students in the Islip Middle School EXCEL Open Space Stewardship Program have been working on a project titled EXCEL’s Natural History Project.

EXCEL teacher Julia Johnson tasked the students with compiling enough data to justify the placement of a historical marker on school grounds.

During their research, it was revealed that there had been an old paper mill

located on the property where Islip Middle School currently stands. The paper mill was built circa 1820 and demolished in 1909 when the property was sold.

On May 15th, all of the students’ hard work paid off, as a historical marker was placed in front of the middle school to indicate the site of the old mill.

Additionally, the students created a documentary that explains how and why they were able to get the

marker placed.

“This project presented students with the unique opportunity to pursue hands-on science, history and documentary filmmaking all within the context of one endeavor,” said Mrs. Johnson. “The placement of the historical marker provided the students with tangible evidence of their hard work; it was the ultimate external reward.”

a recycling center on my back porch,” explained Perniciaro. “I took three large green plastic bags, put them together, and labeled them for metal cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles.” He also recycled a pizza box for a sign saying “John’s Recycling Center,” and made containers to collect bottle caps, which he later used to decorate a poster. Saving not only recyclables from his home, but also those donated by helpful friends and neighbors, he sorted the cans and bottles in his recycling center. When the bags became full, Perniciaro recycled them, for a total of 2,246 cans and bottles in over six months of work.

Devising his own slogan, “Help save our pets one can or bottle at a time,” he donated the $112.30 he earned through recycling to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “I chose the SPCA because I care for the well-being of all animals,” he said, noting his extensive research on the subject before deciding on a recipient.

“My project helped the environment by keeping our streets clean,” said Perniciaro, who hopes to inspire others to recycle for a worthy cause. “It also helps to keep reusable material out of the waste stream so it can be recycled and used to make new products.”

Cleaning and recycling aren’t just family chores for John Perniciaro, but means to many worthy ends. The seventh-grader at East Islip Middle School presented an impressive environmental volunteerism project to the school in late April, tied to the science curriculum.

For the first part of his project, Perniciaro worked with his Trinity Youth Ministry and the Keep Islip Clean organization on a monthly cleanup of Nassau Avenue in Islip. He also personally “adopted” the East Islip Fire Department parking lot, keeping the grounds clean from October 2012 through April 2013.

The next element of his volunteer work involved recycling for a cause. “The first thing I did was make

East Islip High School student Jamie Linz was named the Overall Top Winner of the 2013 Long Island Youth Summit at Dowling College on March 15th, earning the senior a $5,000 scholarship, but the benefits of the experience extended far beyond her academic prize.

At the half-day Summit, a public-private partnership between Dowling College, the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Citizens Campaign for the

Environment, Vision Long Island and participating high school districts on Long Island, students from 21 school districts in both Suffolk and Nassau counties submitted original research projects to the Summit Winner Selection Committee.

“I not only had a great time exploring the many solutions to problems on Long Island, but I also learned a lot from the other students and realized that there are many problems I can help solve,” said Linz.

“We were able to bounce our ideas off each other and come up with even better solutions that hopefully can be implemented in the future.”

Linz’s prize-winning essay addressed the topic of poverty and health. “Before researching the topic, I was not aware of the poverty within my neighborhood

QUILTERS CLUB - The Bay Shore Historical Society hosted members of the Great South Bay Quilters Guild at its May monthly meeting held at the Bay ShoreBrightwaters Library. The quilters displayed over fifty quilts of various designs and sizes while describing the art and history of quilting. Guild members spoke of the intricacy of design as well as the details of preparation and production of the finely crafted fabric hangings and coverings. CREW COMPETITION - On Friday, May 10th, the Bay Shore Crew team traveled to Saratoga to compete in the New York State Scholastic Championships. On Saturday morning, all of the Girls and Boys boats flew through time trials and advanced to their semifinals - a first in Bay Shore history! By Saturday afternoon, the Novice Girls’ Eight had raced its way to the gold medal and title of State Champions. This impressive win came only a few weeks prior to the championship. Congratulations to the Novice Girls’ 8 and their coach Elizabeth Brennan.

YOUNG COMPOSER FORUM - Composer, percussionist and Bay Shore High School Junior Devin Barone has just won the Tennessee Valley Music Festival Young Composers Forum. His symphonic work The Expansion! Symphony Finale will be performed by the Huntsville Youth Orchestra in Alabama this June. While down south, Devin will also attend several workshops with professional composer Robert Bradshaw.

Bay Shore High School Librarian, Mrs. Amy Jo Southworth, was recently named 2013’s recipient of the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Frances Henne Award.

Established in 1986, the $1,250 award, sponsored

by ABC-CLIO, recognizes a school librarian with experience totaling five years or less who demonstrates leadership qualities with students, teachers and administrators.

Mrs. Southworth has also been awarded the Bound to Stay Bound conference grant for $750, enabling her to attend the AASL National Conference, where she will be presenting a session entitled Launching A Common Core Conversion.

Lastly, Mrs. Southworth had her article, Poised to Partner: The 21st Century School Librarian, published in the May issue of English Journal, and was quoted in T.H.E. Journal

(April edition) as an Innovator of the Month. English Journal is NCTE’s award-winning journal of research for secondary English Language Arts teachers and T.H.E. Journal (Technology Horizons in Education) is the education technology news magazine for K-12 district leaders, IT personnel and administrators. For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment.

What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking.

Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment.

From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment.

But it isn’t all bad.

These children quickly learn the value of money.

It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner.

For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming.

The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me.

While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for

rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money.

Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work!

On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
