n May 11th, the 12th Annual Breast Cancer Brunch For A Cure was held at Bay Shore High School. This year’s brunch was organized by Bay Shore High School students Kaitlyn Arnold, Perri Baker, Emily Lindahl, Marc Barreda, Carly Cox and Corinne Schmidt. The event was a huge success, raising almost $6,000, all of which will benefit the Breast Health Center at Good Samaritan Hospital. Thanks to all who helped organize.

So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think?

Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages.

If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough.

And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set!

Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations.

But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

Music is Sheppard’s other main passion, which led to a variety of prestigious posts – including copresident of the school’s band and symphony orchestra section leader – and prominent positions in the jazz band and pit orchestra. Other musical accomplishments included induction in the Tri-M Music Honor Society and being named to this year’s All-County Orchestra and All-County Percussion Ensemble.

“The highlights of my school years come from the music department,” recalled the talented percussionist.

“From competing in the Music in the Parks concert every May, to endless hours spent in a hole under the stage in pit, the music department has been my life, and everybody involved is absolutely incredible.”

Sheppard cited the school’s 2011 spring concert as a particular highlight. “The absolute pinnacle of my music career in the high school was performing John Mackey’s ‘Redline Tango’ at that concert,” he said.

While at East Islip, Sheppard wrote for the school newspaper, The Broadcaster, and served as a member of the National Honor Society, the math team and the school’s academic team. With the latter, he represented East Islip High School in MSG Varsity’s “The Challenge” quiz show earlier this year.

“I’ve lived in East Islip for most of my life, and despite its faults, over the years I’ve come to appreciate what I was given here,” said Sheppard. “I’ve made memories and friends here that I expect to carry for the rest of my life.”

Spring Concert

The young musicians of Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip delivered an impressive set of performances at their spring concert on May 16th, kicking off with the Timber Point Orchestra.

Directed by Jaime DeMaria, accompanied by pianist Rachel Axelrod and led by concertmaster and All-County violinist and USDAN scholarship winner Sophia Bates, the ensemble wowed the audience on Rob Grice’s “Defender of Time,” Stephen Foster’s elegiac “Off to the Races” and “March of the Bowmen” by John Caponegro.

Up next was the school’s band, directed by Lynda Maniscalco. After the humorously powerful opener, “Tyrannosaurus Rocks” by John

Edmondson, the band musicians were joined by nine members of the school’s chorus – Bates, Alyssa Carey, Alex Cutrone, Thomas Locke, Jenna Maio, Kayleigh Marquart, Emma Mendolia, Noelle Naccarato and Amanda Schulte – for a special rendition of “The Candy Man,” the sweet favorite composed

by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.”

The band finished with another cinema classic, John Williams’ Indiana Jones theme “The Raiders March,” and Michael Story’s arrangement of “Patriotic Bits & Pieces.”

Concluding the superb night of music was Timber Point’s chorus, under the direction of Diane

Starost and accompanied

by Axelrod. The singers delighted the crowd with the calypso-flavored “Shake the Papaya Down” by Ruth Dwyer and Judith Waller, Thomas Elias Sugar’s original sea shanty “Home to Oyster Bay” and the stirring “America, of Thee I Sing!” arranged by George Strid to meld “America, the Beautiful” and the Pledge of Allegiance.

“The Timber Point musicians put on an exciting and impressive show,” said DeMaria. “We couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and accomplishments. Bravo to both vocalists and instrumentalists!”

Full-time U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Patrick Williamson, who serves in the Air Force’s 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton Beach, spent May 9th visiting with the East Islip community.

A 2006 graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School, Staff Sgt. Williamson enlisted in February 2008 and went through boot camp the following month at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

In 2012 he was deployed to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan to support the mission of personnel recovery and combat search and rescue, where he was a beneficiary of East Islip’s donation programs for overseas troops. At the 106th Rescue Wing, an Air National Guard Rescue Unit, he works as a material management specialist. Williamson is also a volunteer firefighter at the North Patchogue Fire Department.

During the morning of May 9th, the staff sergeant made presentations to various classrooms at East Islip Middle School, telling students about life in the military and Air Force and describing conditions in Afghanistan. “He came to East Islip as his way of giving thanks to the folks who sent him over 70 care packages,” said Rena Costello, a family and consumer science teacher at the school who has spearheaded the district’s support for deployed military.

After visiting the middle school, Williamson joined Costello and outgoing Board of Education President Ken Cronin for an Islip Rotary Club meeting at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip, where Williamson spoke to Rotary members, led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and received thanks for his service to his country. The Islip Rotary has been a longtime funding contributor for East Islip’s military support programs.

Williamson’s day ended at East Islip High School with a surprise visit to the classes that had contributed to his support.

Connetquot Elementary School’s cafeteria was transformed into an underwater world of music on May 29th as retiring teacher Eileen Egbert and her students presented Octopus’s Garden. Children from kindergarten, first grade and second grade performed for their parents, with Leslie Davis’ second-graders serving as narrators for this sea adventure.

“It was a great way for our youngest students to learn about Long Island’s environment,” said Egbert, noting that the singalong

“Vamos a la Mar.” The performance culminated with a happy rendition of the Beatles’ classic “Octopus’s Garden.”

A special “Tea at the Octopus’s Garden” was held afterward, with servings of goldfish crackers and “seaweed punch” (made with sherbet).

“Once again, the incredibly talented Mrs. Egbert inspired the children of Connetquot to perform like professional actors, due to her enthusiasm and inspiration,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “Mrs. Egbert’s student-centered philosophy in teaching is evident in the level of comfort the children have when on stage, and her influence has been immeasurable.”

Most Sigma Camp instructors have been working together at an excellent weekend enrichment program of School Nova at Stony Brook University. This program they created and successfully ran for the past nine years.

This is Sigma Camp’s second year in existence.

The enrolment is at full capacity of 72 children with a waiting list. From the fist year’s alumni of 45 only two are not returning this year.

Each student had to complete a set of challenging qualifying tests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, which did nothing to discourage the aspiring young minds. Applications keep coming.

Sigma Camp runs for one week in June this year, and will likely be moving to the last week of August for next year.

Children fly from other states and other countries for the opportunity to participate in the camp.

Sigma Camp wishes to share the story of its wonderful atmosphere and inspiring learning experience with the public. What happens when a group of motivated scientists are inspired to give the most amazing and diverse learning experience to kids of middle and high school ages?

Sigma Camp! It is a unique synergy of science summer camp and fully equipped laboratories, where research is lead by active, well published, and world renowned scientists from MIT, Harvard, Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and other similarly accredited institutions from around the world.

“I succeeded in my academic career thanks largely to the great education and exposure to the wonders of science that I received early in my childhood,” says Alexander Abanov, a Sigma Camp instructor and a professor at Stony Brook University and Simons Center for Physics and Geometry. “I am convinced that educating kids fully and thoroughly in a real scientific research environment is essential to their overall development and future growth.”

Sigma Camp provides an opportunity for children ages 11-15 for the kind of direct interaction with leading scientists that most students are never given. Only the lucky few chance to experience this, and much later in their college years.

Sigma Camp offers indepth studies in the main area of interest as well as multiple opportunities to attend workshops and lectures on other subjects.

In the evening, there are varied possibilities for socializing at campfires, board games, and discussions on such topics as art, history, origami, film, and others. Of course, there is also plenty of time left to take advantage of summertime on our

Featuring Les Mis Displaying the developing instrumental and vocal prowess of East Islip’s music students, the two spring concerts presented by East Islip Middle School proved both entertaining for the audiences and inspiring for the confident young musicians.

At the first concert on May 13th, the classic French musical Les Misérables and its popular 2012 film adaptation were

They dedicated their performance of the piece to the victims of the numerous tragedies the nation has endured over the course of the last school year.

With director Concetta Stevens at the helm, the concert band was up next, impressing listeners with renditions of James Swearingen’s “All Glory Told” (featuring three soloists, flutist Meran Lombardi and trumpeters John Fasano and Evan Mauner), Michael Daugherty’s “Alligator Alley” and Richard Saucedo’s “Antares.” The latter featured soloist LeeAnne Jacobsen on flute.

school spring concert on May 15th, the evening started with a performance by the sixth-grade band, directed by Christopher Robertson. The musicians performed robust versions of Robert W. Smith’s “Ash Lawn Echoes” overture, Swearingen’s “Triumphant Spirit,” Michael Story’s “Tribal War Chant” and Gary Gazlay’s “Fortis.”

Directed by Bryan and accompanied by Jeremy Barbaro, the school’s girls chorus began by singing Phil Coulter’s “Come by the Hills” from the “Celtic Thunder” show, featuring soloist Cassandra Manfredi.

A version of Justin Bieber’s power ballad “Born to Be Somebody,” penned by Diane Warren, highlighted singers Alexa Benitez and Gabriella Commisso.

The girls chorus also performed ttraditional Spanish folk song “El Vito,” Schönberg’s “Bring Him Home” (from “Les Misérables”) and Papoulis’ “Kusimama (Stand Tall)” (sung in both English and Swahili).

The sixth-grade orchestra performed next, under the direction of Jacqueline Collins. After opening with ancient Korean folk song “Arirang,” the musicians tackled Edmund J. Siennicki’s “Frog in a Tree,” William Owens’ Titanic-themed “Carpathia” and the finale of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

Closing both the night and the pair of middle school spring concerts, the sixth-grade chorus dove into “Ticket to Ride,” a medley of Beatles songs.

Directed by Lisa Ashkenazy and accompanied by Barbaro, the musicians also performed three pieces inspired by poetry: Steve Kupferschmid’s “A Quiet, Patient Spider” (based on Walt Whitman’s “A Noiseless, Patient Spider”), Mary Lynn Lightfoot’s “Tiger! Tiger!” (from William Blake’s “The Tyger”) and Cynthia Gray’s “Songs from the Shore” (adapted from Amy Lowell’s “Sea Shell” and “The Trout”); the latter featured soloist Rachael Kuhlman. Film Festival Winners

PEER SUPPORT - Bay Shore High School’s Peer Support program was selected to receive an award from the Suffolk County Inter-Faith Anti-Bias Task Force at their Annual Spring Convocation and Awards Breakfast. This award recognizes that Peer Support has made significant contributions, which promote the principles of human rights, inclusion, equality within the school community and beyond, thereby advancing greater understanding and respect amongst students. Congratulations to Peer Support, advisors Dr. Katie Kelly and Ms. Shannon Handley and to Bay Shore High School for being a beacon of inclusivity.

Dellacave Award Winner

For the second year in a row, East Islip High School students and aspiring filmmakers Brendan Bullard and Brian Potter have followed a Best In Show victory at the Long Island Media Arts Show with a selection by the Suffolk County Film Commission for the eighth annual Suffolk County First Exposure Film Festival.

Their prequel film, “Slap Stick Figures 2,” was screened at the prestigious Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington on May 19th

along with the other best new short films from Long Island’s most promising high school filmmakers.

Curated by professional filmmakers from the Suffolk County Film Commission, the festival was an hour-long exhibition of the “best of the best” high school short narrative, documentary and animated films pulled from the Long Island Media Arts Show at Five Towns College in Dix Hills.

Bullard, Potter and graduate David Tekverk’s first “Slap Stick Figures”

won at the 2012 Long Island Media Arts Show and was shown at last year’s First Exposure Film Festival.

“Brian and Brendon’s tireless efforts in the TV studio really paid off,” said East Islip technology teacher James Connell.

“They are both extremely talented at their craft and I’m truly going to miss them next year.”

Teeny Awards

Being nominated for the Butch Dellacave Award is a tremendous honor, as it is only given to those Suffolk student-athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom and represent their community with dignity and dedication.

Bay Shore’s Courtney Syrett and Ward Melville’s Jack Bruckner were this year’s two Dellacave Award winners.

In speaking about all 114 of the amazing nominess, Guy Dellecave, executive director of the Butch Dellecave Foundation and oldest son of the late Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, for whom the award is named, said, “It’s

the best of the best. They’re all winners. Having them here is a culmination of all they worked for.”

Syrett is a member of the Athletes Helping Athletes program and an integral part of Awareness Weekends, Cultural Exchanges and many other community-building activities. “It means a lot,” said Syrett, a three-sport standout for the Marauders in field hockey, basketball and softball, who plans to play softball at the University of Mississippi.

She currently sports a 94.4 GPA and recently made the high honor roll. “I feel I’m a well-rounded person on and off the field,” she

said. “Support-wise, just being able to connect with younger kids will help me be more well-rounded, not only now but later in life.”

She went on to say, “The lessons that high school sports teach you can be applied to all aspects of life and are the foundation of who I am and will be.” The Butch Dellecave Award was presented by The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. and the Butch Dellecave Foundation, Inc., which provided a $1,000 scholarship to each recipient.

Congratulations to Courtney on her welldeserved award.

This year’s Teeny Awards, presented by the Islip Town Council, was a huge success. About 500 students, politicians, professional actors and community leaders attended the exciting event.

Bay Shore High School’s thespians received a standing ovation as Jasmen Wimbush and the ensemble cast from our spring musical “Hairspray” performed “I Know Where I’ve Been”, a poignant

song recalling the struggle for civil rights. After the performance, Bay Shore received three Teeny Awards: Best Supporting Female in a Musical (Jasmen Wimbush); Best Lead Female in a Drama (Maggie Berke); and the Student Pit Orchestra Recognition Award (Bay Shore High School). Bay Shore is equally proud of its 11 other nominees, as well as Mr. Billella, Mrs. Mendolia, Miss Malpigli, Mrs. Brenner, Mrs.

Berke and the rest of the production staff.

The Town of Islip theater community has recognized Bay Shore as the “Heart of the Arts” and these nominations alone are evidence of the tremendous work and accomplishments of our students. Congratulations to the nominated students, Teeny Award Winners and the amazing Bay Shore High School Drama staff.

Plenty of people with near-perfect SAT scores and degrees from the world’s most prestigious universities hate their lives. A high GPA and a fancy college sweatshirt do not guarantee happiness or success. It is all about hard work.

A wise man once told me, “Garbage in, garbage out.” What this means is that the more effort, the more blood,

sweat and tears you put into everything that you do, the more life will pay off. There is no promise of money once you graduate.

The only hint that you are an overachiever is that diploma, so you had better be hard working! Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies.

So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
