ine students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale have been chosen to participate in Project SEARCH. Beginning September 9th, they will be immersed in internships at Medford Multicare Center. This grant-funded pilot program is designed to train, educate and assist students with disabilities to transition from school to the adult world and obtain and maintain competitive employment.

A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you.

Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who

play such an important role.

Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly.

The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things

– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived!

So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along.

It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

Town of Islip officials are urging residents to take advantage of the Islip E-Alert system to stay informed during hurricanes and major emergencies, and also to receive important news in their community.

Residents, businesses, and community leaders can all benefit from this system, which can instantaneously pass important information to those who have signed up.

Those who sign up for the service can opt to receive the alerts via email and/or text message.

The system has been established in such a way that even if the Town’s communications network compromised, E-Alerts can still be sent from off-site servers. The service is free and residents are urged to sign up for e-alerts from the homepage at www. townofislip-ny.gov.

As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school.

Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break.

Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first

quarter average.

In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September.

In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.

Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable.

Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams.

Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you.

Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

Generous Grant Received Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS), is pleased to announce that they have received a grant for $300,000 to help support the funding of the Children’s Care Pavilion for ventilator dependent children. This pavilion will address the urgent need for these services on Long Island. Additional grants and resources will allow Our Lady of Consolation to extend their clinical expertise and provide long-term care to a special population of ventilator dependent children.

When a child living on Long Island becomes sick or injured and requires the long term assistance of a ventilator for breathing, there is at present no local comprehensive program to support them. These children must be relocated miles from home, often out of state for their care.

Last year, Catholic Health Services received a HEAL grant of 3.2 million dollars to begin development of a cross continuum of care.

Catholic Health Services hopes to achieve a continuum of care for these special patients through collaboration between its members. A 10-bed pediatric rehabilitation unit at St. Charles Hospital will provide initial acute rehabilitation for children who recently experienced a catastrophic event with a goal of returning

them home with support from a pediatric team of Catholic Home. Children unable to return home will be transferred to longterm care at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center (OLC). OLC’s pediatric ventilator unit will be a 22 bed pavilion built entirely for the pediatric population within the existing footprint of the nursing home. This space will also include a child friendly outdoor recreation area.

The educational, nutritional and clinical needs of these new pediatric residents will be provided within in a child-friendly environment. This will not be a unit for children embedded in a geriatric care facility.

Rather, it will be a nurturing environment with its own discrete entrance, space, specialized staff, and program with the sole focus of quality care for children.

“This funding from the O’Toole Foundation advances our efforts to develop this critical resource for children and their families,” said Joseph Tomaino, Executive Vice President for Continuing Care Division of Catholic Health Services, “The impact of injury or illness on these families is compounded by the painful separation that they must go through in order to obtain services.”

Rebuilding Together Grant Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities.

Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City will be providing free critical home repairs in many of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and

exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are safe, healthy and livable. Those eligible for services include lowincome families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans.

“We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Red Cross in the long term recovery of communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said John L. Fiegel, interim president and CEO

of Rebuilding Together.

“Senior citizens and lowincome homeowners are among the most vulnerable in times of disaster and we are honored to be a partner with the Red Cross to help nearly 90 families get back on their feet.”

As of July 2013, hardworking Rebuilding Together affiliates in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County, Jersey City, and Essex County have already completed more

than 200 projects, assisting more than 375 families or individuals with the help of over 2,000 volunteers.

“Recovery from a storm of this size takes time and help from many different organizations, not just the Red Cross, and we are pleased to support the programs of Rebuilding Together and other partners, and to continue to work with them to help people with their recovery,” said Jerry DeFrancisco,

president of Humanitarian Services at the Red Cross.

“We can help people and communities in a more comprehensive way when we pool our resources and services together in a coordinated way. This not only speeds recovery, but helps us engage the entire community in building the resilience we need as we face disasters of this type in the future.”

On August 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake, which will be held in beautiful downtown Riverhead.

Continental breakfast and registration will start at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and a ribbon cutting and start of the Walk at 11 a.m.

The Walk will begin at Milton L. Burns Park (formerly Grangebel Park) at Peconic Avenue and go along the scenic waterfront, ending at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center. Stop World Hunger Tournament Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate

(3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate.

The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable

recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world.

Assistance is provided

where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality.

Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles.

Participants schedule their own matches at mutally convenient times and sites.

All matches are to be played between September 14th and November 16th. The deadline for registration is Friday, September 6th.

Awards will be presented

at a special Holiday Tennis Party.

Throughout the

East Islip High School students have completed a two-year project designing and constructing a pond ecosystem in the courtyard between the academic hallways. This “living laboratory” is already paying dividends by providing science students from across the district with an opportunity to study in a real-world environment.

“Seeing students of all ages out there in the environment has been an excellent experience, one that will continue to benefit the children of East Islip for years to come,” said teacher Paul McHugh.

The pond was created through a collaborative effort by teacher Genesis Dawson and the school’s Science Honor Society, McHugh and East Islip’s Environmental Club, and students from the Environment Green Career Academy.

After digging the hole and installing the liner for the pond, plantings and compost were added in both the fall and spring during the 2011-2012 school year. In the spring of 2013, the pond was improved with wallstone placed around the edge.

Additional plantings and paths are planned for 20132014.

East Islip students from kindergarten to high school have already benefited by visiting and observing many different aspects of the natural world. One of the biggest hits of the pond environment is the mother duck and her ducklings.

“For many years, female mallard ducks built nests and hatched ducklings in the relatively empty courtyard,” explained McHugh. “Now the ducks have a natural environment in which they can use resources such as the pond to swim and the food and cover of the native plants and grasses.”

RCK kindergartners made field trips to the pond this past May, studying the complete the project. Many plants were donated from ducks’ behavior and releasing one of their classroom the Town of Islip and the Long Island Natural Grass newts into its new home in the pond.
