uffolk County Legislator Rick Montano presented the Central Islip Civic Council with a $20,000 check awarded by the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel to the 9th Legislative District through their organization.

The Downtown Revitalization Grant, Round 11, totaled $250,000 and was distributed to organizations working to revitalize downtown areas in Suffolk County. Thanks to all those who contributed to this effort.

The Early Years Institute (EYI) has received a $20,000 grant from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at Long Island Community Foundation to address educational inequities for young children.

Based on research, when underserved children are not given equal opportunities to learn and grow, they start behind their peers in Kindergarten and they often stay behind.

Some of the root causes of the inequities stem from a lack of literacy and language access, representation in the decision-making process and affordable housing.

This grant will enable EYI to continue its work in Westbury by facilitating systemic social change that engages the whole community in supporting children so they succeed in school.

EYI will continue to utilize the data from the Early Development Instrument (EDI) – a school readiness Kindergarten assessment

tool - to host Parent Cafés that elicit the voices of parents, share data and parent concerns with government, business and civic leaders, and to create a more welcoming and efficient process of registering and orienting families to Kindergarten.

“EYI’s goals and outcomes for this project are aligned with Unitarian Universalist principles of justice, equity and compassion in human relations and the use of the democratic process,” said Dr. Dana E. Friedman, president of The Early Years Institute.

The Early Years Institute, a regional non-profit organization based in Plainview, NY, serves as a catalyst for community partnerships and innovations to ensure all young children have the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life.

EYI is viewed as a trusted source of information and a thought leader on early childhood education and school readiness.

pulled the dolphin down the beach about ¼ mile and just left it to bake in the sun. The whole ride, it was bouncing along the sand. I’m sure they came back for it, because a few hours later, it was gone.

It was a truly inhumane way to treat an animal.

Even a dead fish shouldn’t be treated the way that this dolphin was treated. They showed no respect for the animal. It is a shame that this is the way the animal had to go.

It was exciting for the beach goers, but also a saddening moment for many of the Fire Island locals who enjoy watching the dolphins go by in the water every once in a while. For us, it is simply one less beautiful creature that continues to play off the shore of our little island.

struck. By this point, it had been on land for close to ten minutes and it was not moving.

Lifeguards sprinted over and we tried to drag it into the water, but it did not budge. When the police finally arrived, they came in great numbers. Not much happens on Fire Island, so something this unique surely attracted attention.

This one big, angry policeman proceeded to tie a rope to the back of his decked-out Suburban, and to the tail of the now deceased animal. He put it in drive and gunned it, but got stuck in the sand.

Then, a police boat showed up. It really couldn’t help at all due to the dolphin being on land!

A Sad Way To Go

About a week ago, my father and I were relaxing on the beach in front of my house. What started out as a seemingly normal day abruptly shifted into a frantic morning.

The plot twist occurred when all of a sudden a dying dolphin washed up onto the beach. From a distance, it looked like a child’s inflatable toy. Its tail stuck up at a weird angle. As we moved closer, we saw what resembled a huge bite mark on its back. Flocks of people were surrounding the mammal and obstructing our view.

As one of the locals, I was there before the police. This meant that I got to see it up close.

Bradstock XX Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be presenting Bradstock XX, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry that will be taking place on Saturday, August 31st from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 1st from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Now in its 20th year, Bradstock is an all-day music festival featuring the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing on October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Summer’s Sunset By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned “Last Weekend Of Summer,” even though summer won’t, in actuality, end for nearly another month.

But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQ… and let’s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate “fall” faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!)

It’s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each

year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend?

Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there.

A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments – even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates.

When is there time for fun?

But maybe the key to fun is to remain busy, to fill our days with enough activities

and people to make the time fly, to enjoy while being super-productive… and then to share every moment on Facebook and Instagram of course! (Because really, if it’s not posted on some sort of social media outlet, did it really happen??) Seems to work for most people – in this generation anyway.

And with that, we bid adieu to the sun and surf, to long hours of daylight, to warm summer nights and all the excitement that comes with living on Long Island at this time of year.

But don’t worry – the calendar says we still have a little time left to savor those last golden days. Be sure to make them count.

Let’s all slow down for a moment and lead by example in showing our children how to follow these important rules:

Start The School Year Off Strong The inevitable last minutes of summer are ticking away. The countdown has begun for back-to-school once again.

And along with it, major retailers are bombarding parents, making sure they hurry out and buy the coolest new outfits, backpacks and gadgets for their kids.

But this hyped-up, commercial back-to-school rush to equip students with new garments and gear often gets in the way of the real preparations that parents and kids should focus on for a successful school year.

Here are four things parents can do to help their children achieve better academic results: • Impose The Two-Week Rule - With later bedtimes over the summer, children need to ease back into their school routine rather than having a sudden change

their first day of school.

Using the last two weeks of summer to re-introduce a school year bedtime routine will make waking up on that first day a lot easier.

• Reintroduce Regular Meal Times - During summer months, kids tend to grab a snack several times during the day. Parents can start reminding students to get back into a three-meal-aday schedule in order to regulate their system into the back-to-school mode.

Nutrition is an important factor in academic performance, and eating a healthy, balanced breakfast and lunch keeps kids alert throughout the day.

• Family Calendar - Time management is tricky for everyone, especially kids and teens, but planning is an important way to save everyone’s sanity. Having major deadlines, due dates,

events and extracurricular activities in one place helps kids visualize their week, manage their time and stay on track.

• Don’t Ditch Good Habits - If you and your child have established a good summer learning routine, when school starts try not to forsake all of the fun reading, writing and art activities that kept your child engaged all summer.

Here are four important things that students can follow to improve the academic quality of the school year, starting on Day One. • Organize - Organization is not overrated. Keeping notes, projects and reading materials in logical order helps students find what they need right away, cutting down on time spent tracking things down, and allowing more time for actual studying.

• Take Good Notes - Yes,

it does matter. Taking good notes helps keep kids‚ grades up, especially in middle or high school.

To boost note-taking skills, students should practice picking out the „main ideas‰ in conversations, news reports, or magazine articles.

• Concentrate - Staying focused is easier for some kids than others. Students need to do their best to avoid distractions in class. This means keeping cell phones tucked away and being vocal if a chatty classmate is too distracting.

• Speak Up - Students often can get tripped up by homework or test instructions.

Students should know it’s OK to speak up if they don’t understand testing or homework directions.

Students should also listen carefully and spend plenty of time reading directions.

Roller Derby Recruitment On Saturday, September 14th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Strong Island Derby Revolution, a Suffolkbased all-female roller derby team, is inviting those interested in joining this unique American sport to participate in a free bootcamp, which will focus on basic skills, hitting and blocking drills, as well as proper skating form.

The bootcamp, which will be held at World Gym, located at 384 Mark Tree Rd. in East Setauket, will

also give prospective new members a chance to meet league members and find out more about the sport. Requirements for a new skater include being at least 21 years of age or older and coming to the event with a pair of quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet. There is also a limited supply of loaner equipment available on a first come first serve basis.

Strong Island Derby

Revolution formed in the spring of 2011 and currently boasts almost 50 league members, including skaters, referees, non-skating officials and coaches. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in roller derby around the world. The sport’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December of 2011. All teams are DIY organizations with the skaters not only training hard on the track but also

running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise.

Commissioning Ceremony Recently, Suffolk Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco ceremoniously smashed a bottle of champagne on the bow of “Marine 41” to officially christen the boat into service. Marine 41 is a Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive Response vessel procured by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office for use by the East End Marine Task Force. The Task Force is a collaborative law enforcement initiative made up of eighteen policing agencies from the five East End towns, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office, the five East End villages, the State Park Police and the N.Y.S. DEC. The Sheriff’s Office received the boat on February 6th, 2013.

The Sheriff, along with Captain Edward J. Cubanski III, the Commander for Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, Chief Ed Michels,

Commander of the East End Marine Task Force, and law enforcement officials from throughout the region all gathered today at U.S. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock in Hampton Bays to christen the vessel and celebrate some recent success stories.

During the ceremony, Sheriff DeMarco praised the Coast Guard and all of the East End Marine Task Force partners for their role in protecting Long Island’s waterways and its marine heritage. He stated: “We’re here today to christen Marine 41, but also to celebrate our success as a group with a mission to ensure secure passage and safety throughout Long Island’s beautiful East End waterways.”

Marine 41 was purchased by the Sheriff’s Office with a $1.2 million Federal Emergency Management Agency grant. Marine law enforcement officials are

utilizing the vessel for emergency response and routine patrol missions.

It was most recently used during a search and rescue mission on July 24th for a lost fisherman, John Aldridge, who was found after an extensive search approximately 43 miles off the coast of Montauk.

Aldridge and his family were in attendance as the United States Coast Guard was honored during today’s ceremony for their role in that successful rescue operation.

Marine 41 is equipped with infrared cameras, side scan sonar, radar, chart plotters and a dual screen GPS. A computer is installed on the vessel, which provides access to DMV data and other law enforcement databases.

The cabin is equipped with oxygen, a defibrillator, as well as EMT equipment, and can accommodate a patient on a backboard.

Local Youth Selected While attending an Offense-Defense Football Camp this Summer, Russell Dietz, 11, of Islip, was named an Offense-Defense All-American and invited to participate in the 8th Annual Offense-Defense Bowl Week festivities taking place at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL. Rusty, a Center for Islip Buccaneer Youth Football, was selected for this honor from a group of young athletes numbering in the thousands across the country and played well representing Islip, easily validating the Bowl

Selection Committee’s choice in tabbing Rusty for the All-Star tilt.

The Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl is part of a week-long series of events including the televised, 8th-annual Offense-Defense AllAmerican Bowl, an All-Star football game showcasing 88 of the top high school seniors in the country and has featured current NFL pros such as Cam Newton, Carlos Dunlap, and Dez Bryant among others before they were collegiate and later professional stars.

Coastal Cleanup Coming There are a many beaches, streams and wetlands within Islip Township and the upcoming International Coastal cleanup is one way to help keep them healthy. The ICC is an unusual volunteer project because it combines waterside cleanup with a tally of all litter removed during the activity. The data recorded is analyzed by the Ocean Conservancy in Washington and the American Littoral Society to help determine pollution trends.

As the name implies, the ICC is an international event with cleanups taking place at waterways around the globe during the same time period in mid-September. The main date of this year’s 28th Annual ICC is on Saturday, September 21st and groups are encouraged to register with Keep Islip Clean to choose a waterway and be part of this important environmental event.

Cleanups can take place anytime within the last two weeks of September with every effort made to

give volunteers their first choice of location.

“The ICC is the only international event that I know of that scientifically analyzes information collected by volunteers,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean.

Tips For Packing School Lunch and colorful as possible using plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Cut up fresh veggies and pair with low-fat ranch dressing, sunflower seed butter, veggie dip, lowfat plain Greek yogurt, or hummus.

• Veggie kabobs with cucumber chunks, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper wedges, and other veggies.

• Have kids make their own trail mix, and limit the chocolate chips, preferably dark chocolate, to one tablespoon per baggie.

Mix: whole grain cereal, dried fruits like raisins, dried cranberries, or dry mango-pieces, sunflower or pumpkin seeds and whole grain pretzels.

• Make your own portionsized snacks. For a healthier snack that satisfies salty, crunchy cravings, replace potato chips with a baggie of low-fat microwave popcorn or consider corn or whole grain chips and salsa.

• Add an insulated lunch bag and ice pack to your school supply list. Packing your child’s lunch in one of these will help to keep foods cool all morning. Or place a frozen water bottle into the insulated bag in the morning and it will not only keep the food cold, but will be thawed to drink at lunchtime.

Putterman also suggests that you vary your child’s weekly menu by changing up the lunchbox routine.

The same meals can get boring for kids. Try rotating the types of protein, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains you use.

Stony Brook University cut the ribbon of Frey Hall, commemorating the opening of the first building dedicated solely to classroom space on the Long Island campus. Stony Brook President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. was joined by Dr. Robert Frey and his wife Kathryn, academic leadership, faculty and staff from across the University, and elected officials including Sen. John Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, to celebrate the $31M, 95,000 square-foot renovation project that began in March 2011. The project, designed by architectural firm EwingCole to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification, converted one of the oldest buildings on the campus known as “Old Chemistry” (construction for which began in 1962) into a modern new teaching facility with 1,971 seats (including three new 250 seat lecture halls), 27 new classrooms and creative new teaching space, which, combined, will host nearly 240 courses this fall.

Named to honor Dr. Robert Frey and the Frey Family Foundation in grateful recognition of their 35-year commitment to Stony Brook University, the new classroom building incorporates several signature teaching and learning with technology (TLT) features, including an “Active Learning Center” and a “Testing Center.” The Active Learning Center is a 180-seat classroom space organized around tables of six in which an instructor and teaching assistants lead the students through cooperative learning, problembased learning and team- problem solving exercises in a media intense environment. The Testing Center is a relatively new concept in higher education, slated to

come online in spring 2013, in which space is dedicated solely to electronic testing and features special facility accommodations for eligible students such as those who are hearing or sight impaired.

“Robert’s connection to and investment in Stony Brook runs deep and personal,” said Dr. Stanley. “It includes almost every role imaginable, from teaching and research to philanthropy and indeed, bricks and mortar, having accomplished something no other who came before him was able to do – he built a 135-room Hilton Garden Inn on campus. I cannot emphasize enough how important – how significant – his contributions to the campus community have been.”

After securing his bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook in 1980, Dr. Frey demonstrated his commitment to his alma mater while building a career that spanned such notable institutions as the IRS, Doubleday Book Co., European American Bank, Morgan Stanley, Renaissance Technologies and sustained that commitment as he branched off into his own businesses, Harbor Financial Management and Frey Quantitative Strategies. His first foray into teaching at SBU was as an assistant professor in the Psychology Department, then in the Education and Special Development Department, followed by the Institute for Pattern Analysis, and as a Research Professor in the Applied Math and Statistics Department, an appointment he has held since 2004.

In 2008, the Frey Family Foundation established the Frey Endowed Chair and Professorship in Quantitative Finance in the Department of Applied Mathematics and

Statistics in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook and also established the Frey Scholarship for the College. Dr. Frey is a continuing member of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Dean’s Council, he is a former Stony Brook Foundation Trustee and former member of the University Hospital Auxiliary Board. In addition, the Frey’s generous support has touched a wide variety of programs on campus, from athletics, student scholarships, to alumni affairs and the hospital. A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Robert and his wife Kathryn have taken leadership roles in: Mather Hospital, Port Jefferson Board of Education, Mt. Sinai Board of Education, Hope House Ministries, Suffolk County College Foundation, Alliance of Guardian Angels and the Royal Foundation.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized today; I feel like I should be thanking Stony Brook,” said Dr. Frey at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Stony Brook changed my life. This University is engaged in such a noble mission; one that has changed so many lives, transforming students through research and education. I too am better because of Stony Brook.”

Garden Of Inspiration

Assisted by volunteers, the 3rd Annual “Grounds for Change” gardens were planted at East Islip Middle School earlier this summer, sponsored by the EJ Autism Foundation, a local organization that continually works to benefit special needs children.

Grounds for Change consists of over a dozen organic garden beds housing a variety of vegetables and herbs donated by Bonnie Farms and Father Nature’s Garden Center.

The gardens were planted by East Islip School District students with disabilities and maintained by East Islip Middle School family and consumer science teacher Patricia EmmonsFritz.

“These school gardens are not just our outside classrooms, but serve as

a terrific way to bring people together,” said Linda J. Rozzi, East Islip’s superintendent of schools. “Just seeing these students take ownership of garden cultivation every week during the summer months is inspiring.”

“The Grounds for Change gardens were inspired by our children in the district with disabilities who grow in so many ways with the right support and services,” explained EJ Autism founder Bea Huste-Petersen. “Ideally, we have typical children paired with our kids with disabilities, certainly during the planting phase. Over the summer, the students work with teachers and their aides in weeding, watering and spraying soapy water to ward off bugs. Vegetables that are grown are donated locally, and during the

school year, the kids in our life skills program practice their cooking skills. Over time, we would like to see more children being paired with our kids, modeling behavior so that we can grow together.”

“Our staff has made the program truly integrated, teaching our students about environmental awareness and life skills,” added Rozzi. “They have worked hard in building an effective and engaging way to integrate curriculum and meet learning standards, giving our young people the chance to develop a wide range of social skills while having them enjoy our natural spaces right here on campus.”

Patrol Map Changes

Recently, County Executive Bellone was joined by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) and a host of community leaders at the Central Islip Library to announce the long requested move to have the entire hamlet of Central Islip patrolled by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Precinct.

“Today, the community’s voice has been heard loud and clear,” said County Executive Bellone. “During a meeting with Central Islip Community leaders two months ago it was brought to my attention that the community had concerns and had been

requesting for some time for the entire hamlet of Central Islip to be patrolled by the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Precinct.

I am happy to announce that SCPD has reconstructed the boundaries for the Third Precinct and all of Central Islip will now fall under the command of the Third Precinct. It only made sense to me that what the community was asking for was very reasonable and underscored SCPD’s intelligence led and community led policing initiatives.

“Our repeated requests over the years for the hamlet of Central Islip to be patrolled by the Third

Precinct had fallen on deaf ears,” said Amparo Sadler. “We met with the County Executive Bellone to express our concerns and he listened. I thank County Executive Bellone for his willingness to work with the Central Islip Community.”

“This is the first time that I have had faith in a County Executive, said Joseph Leoncavallo, Trustee, Central Islip Library. “He said he would look into this issue and see what he could do and he came back with a solution and got it done.”

The change in patrols for the Third Precinct will take effect within the next month.
