Memorial Unveiling

eptember 11th, 2001 - a day many will never forget, a day that the Bay Shore community honored with the creation of the 9/11 Memorial Garden at Bay Shore Middle School. Through the generous donations of several community members, the memorial will honor members of the local area whose lives were lost. The memorial’s centerpiece includes a brick planter, which will feature a metal beam from one of the World Trade Center towers.

Registration and lunch start at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

Golf will be followed by a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. and a dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Registration is $900 per foursome or $250 per golfer which includes BBQ lunch, reception and dinner. For those who wish to attend the

reception and dinner, but not golf, the cost is $100 per person. The deadline for registration is September 20th.

Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree.

Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property.

Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

• Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned.

Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs.

• Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned.

• Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

• Remove dead limbs.

Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

• Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/ or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped.

Topping also decreases a tree’s life expectancy.

Prep Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can

begin.

• Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint.

In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

• Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect

on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

• Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

• Prepare your paint.

Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so

dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

• Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home

improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms.

While “easy” is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.

Resurface When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less laborintensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew.

Resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs to installing shower liners.

Those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that they’re just not ready to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire walls.

Winterizing Your Lawn Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead.

Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where

you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season.

• Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots

and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers.

Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as

well. Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives.

• Cut your lawn short.

Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It

Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring.

• Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services.

• Seed bare patches.

Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.

Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day.

In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth.

That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch.

The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next.

And the one after that.

Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.)

In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families.

Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event.

This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined

forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do.

Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is

incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination.

Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. So please join for what will surely be another monumental event to support this inspirational family in their time of need.

How To Prepare Your Lawn For The Colder Weather weather synonymous with winter.

• Don’t procrastinate.

Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy.

Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result.

Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come.

• Treat trouble spots.

Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and

drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments.

Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier.

• Aerate the property.

Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can

restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul.

Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration.

• Take steps to strengthen the roots.

stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property.

• Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring. In addition, piles of debris might make good

homes for organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees.

• Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead.

For the fifth year in a row, the Long Island Game Farm is hosting its annual Girl Scout Day for the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County on September 21st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a rain-orshine event.

There will be tables set up for visitors to learn more about the Girl Scouts, and sponsorship opportunities for Operation:Cookie, which sends Girl Scout cookies to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to those recuperating at Walter Reed Medical Center and the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.

Those in attendance can join the Girl Scouts in arts and crafts and science-themed projects that emphasize the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

In addition to doing these and other activities, the Girl Scouts will also explore the Game Farm as they visit different exotic animals, enjoy the animal lectures, ride a camel and go on the fun, exciting rides.

“We are happy to have the Girl Scouts at the Game Farm and emphasize the importance of science and technology to our visitors,” said Diane Novak, President and CoOwner, Long Island Game

Farm. “I know they will enjoy visiting the Game Farm and learning about the exotic animals that we have here. It will be a fun and educational experience for them.”

Scholarship Funding Secured For each of the next three years, 50 fortunate Stony Brook students will be eligible to take advantage of the AmeriCorps Education Award, which enables them to receive a $1,175 scholarship. In return they must complete 300 hours of service work for local nonprofit organizations addressing unmet health community needs in disease prevention, health promotion and hunger initiatives.

The Career Center offers the program, which is a federally funded threeyear grant with support from the Office of the

Vice President for Student Affairs.

Students may use the scholarship to pay for education costs at any college, university, or approved post-secondary institution or school-towork program. A voucher may also be applied to pay back qualified student loans already incurred by the students.

In the process AmeriCorps members learn new skills, acquire leadership experience and gain a sense of satisfaction from positively impacting the lives of others.

“The application

process this year was very competitive because of the high interest in community engagement programs among higher education institutions,” said Urszula Zalewski, Assistant Director of Experiential Programs and Project Director, Stony Brook AmeriCorps Program at the Career Center.

“Stony Brook University’s AmeriCorps Program has a long history of outstanding achievements, and this past success helped us receive the additional funding for the new threeyear cycle. We have 100 percent enrollment and

97-100 percent retention rates since 2004, which is a huge accomplishment.”

Since 2004 the Career Center has secured $777,054 in federal dollars to support SBU students and community partners through AmeriCorps community outreach programming at Stony Brook.

The Career Center reaches out to students through other departments, utilizing ZebraNet — the Community Service and Service-Learning website — to promote available positions and provide

extensive details about the application process.

Stony Brook students have served the following organizations: Response of Suffolk County, The Elsie Owens Health Center, Four Seasons Nursing Home, Montefiore Hospital NYC, Oxfam America, Suffolk County Perinatal Coalition, Sunshine Prevention Center, the City Bar Justice Center, Town of Oyster Bay/G.A.P. The South Shore Nature Center celebrated the beginning of a new chapter today, at a special ceremony held at its facility located on Bayview Avenue in East Islip, where the doors to the Nature Center were officially reopened to the public for the first time since late 2012, and the building rededicated as the Orr Wildlife Learning Center (OWLC), in honor of the Orr Family who donated the house and land to the Town in 1975. Islip Town Board Members Anthony Senft, Jr., Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Steve Flotteron, and Town Clerk Olga Murray and Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, were joined by Seatuck officials, state and county officials, and community members in celebrating the much-anticipated event that resurrected an invaluable educational resource.

Owned and operated by the Town since 1977, the SSNC’s education center was forced to close earlier this year due to substantial financial strains in Town government. But thanks to the hard work and commitment of Council Members Anthony Senft, Jr. and Trish Bergin Weichbrodt in seeking out a partnership with the environmental nonprofit organization Seatuck Environmental Association to manage the site, nature enthusiasts of all ages will again have the opportunity to enjoy the facility and the wide variety of programs that will be administered there.

“The Town Board acted responsibly when deciding the future of the SSNC, and by working together with the community, we were able to come up with a solution that made sense for everyone involved. Our public/private partnership with Seatuck enables us to preserve one of Islip’s greatest natural resources,” noted Councilman

Anthony Senft, Jr. “The cooperative effort between the Town and Seatuck allows the SSNC to continue to exist as a lasting legacy of Islip’s natural history and wildlife preservation and one that put no financial burden on our taxpayers.”

Under the agreement, which was authorized in May, Seatuck will oversee the daily operations at SSCN, including programming and property maintenance, for

three years. “For more than three decades, the SSNC has been a vital sanctuary for wildlife and an invaluable educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Islip,” said Enrico Nardon, Seatuck Executive Director.

“The partnership with Islip Town ensures that the facility will continue to serve these important roles for many years to come, and helps us to enhance the number and kinds of programs that Seatuck can offer to the public, including our brand new Little Peepers program, Suffolk County’s first nature-based preschool program which kicked off earlier this week. ” The SSNC is a 200-acre preserve that stretches all the way to the shores of the Great South Bay, and consists of mature upland forests, freshwater wetlands and a vast salt marsh. It also boasts an extensive network of trails and a boardwalk that afford visitors miles of access to the property’s beauty and ecological diversity. An Open House is planned at SSNC on Sunday, September 15th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring a full schedule of nature programs, as well as crafts, games and other activities for the whole family. The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County (MHAS), Clubhouse of Suffolk, and Suffolk County United Veterans are pleased to announce a local campaign to bring greater awareness about mental illness to our community.

Stigma is commonly cited as a major reason why someone suffering from a mental health disorder does not seek help. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a national campaign established by Congress in 1990 and held the first full week of October.

For the past 20 years, Mental Illness Awareness Day has been held in Suffolk County during the National Mental Illness Awareness Week, with the goal of reducing stigma and promoting understanding through an educational and motivational conference for people with lived experience in the mental health system, their families and friends, service providers, students and the community.

FIRST DAY FOR DISTRICT - On September 9th, Bay Shore Schools enjoyed a smooth opening to the 2013-2014 school year. From the newest Universal Pre-K and Kindergarten entrants to the High School Seniors nearing the end of their journey in Bay Shore, all students were greeted by enthusiastic and professional staff at their respective schools, as was Bay Shore Schools’ new Superintendent, Dr. Karen Salmon.

It’s time to “play ball” on the brand new fields that were officially opened today on Eastview Drive in Central Islip – the new home of the Central Islip Little League. A cooperative effort between the Town of Islip and Ultimate Game Sports, the $2 million athletic complex features seven baseball fields, a multi-purpose field, brand new fencing, bleachers, a batting cage, picnic area and concession building with bathrooms. Islip Town Board Members Steve Flotteron, Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, Anthony Senft, Jr., and Town Clerk Olga Murray, were joined by State and County Officials and the Central Islip community at a special ribbon cutting ceremony where they threw out a ceremonial first pitch at the long-awaited recreational complex.

“When government partners with the private sector, great things can happen,” said Councilman Flotteron. “By working together, we were successful in not only cleaning up vacant land, but also in providing the Central Islip Little League with much more desirable fields for their teams to use - all at zero cost to Islip taxpayers.”

The athletic complex was donated by Andy Borgia of Ultimate Game Sports, and is constructed on 14.8 acres of Town-owned property located on Eastview Drive, in Central Islip. It had long been a goal of the Town to have athletic fields established there, and was included in the

Town’s 2005 updated Master Plan.

The idea came to fruition when Borgia presented another plan for construction of a sports complex and ball fields on municipal land at the Central Islip DPW yard on Carleton Avenue, where the Central Islip Little League has been playing. But discussions between Borgia, Councilman Flotteron and Planning officials resulted in a more modern design of fields that could better meet

the needs of the Little League, while improving vacant Town-owned property on Eastview Drive. The new Little League complex is equipped with three little league fields; two tee-ball fields; one softball field, a 90-foot diamond -- all with freshly installed sod – a batting cage,

PTAs held welcoming orientation events for new kindergartners on Sept. 4, while later that afternoon, East Islip Middle School Principal Mark Bernard and his staff welcomed the school’s newest sixthgraders to orientation, introducing them to their teacher teams, classrooms and lockers.

The developer was happy to take on the project, because it was “a public benefit to the community,” he said, and encourages other business owners to follow his lead. “This was a great thing to do for the Central Islip community, and I think all businesses should get more involved with their own communities.”

Debbie Cavanagh, Chairperson of the Central Islip Parks Committee, applauded both the Town and Borgia for their continued commitment to revitalizing the Central Islip community. “We’re very excited that the fields for the Central Islip Little League are completed, and we look forward to even more improvements for the Central Islip community in the near future,” said Cavanagh.

“I congratulate all of the stakeholders involved in helping this dream become a reality. Central Islip is benefitting from the hard work and collaboration between government, the private sector and community leaders. In the very near future we will be looking forward to cutting the ribbon on yet additional athletic fields all with the Central Islip community by our side,” said Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr., liaison to the Parks Department.

Board Tours District

Members of East Islip’s Board of Education toured the district on August 28th, led by Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi, Plant and Facilities Administrator Eric Woellhof, and Assistant Plant and Facilities Administrator John Rotzman.

The group visited a variety of settings throughout the district, including classrooms,

auditoriums, cafeterias, courtyards and sports facilities, all newly renovated or in the process of being readied for when classes begin on September 9th.

Rozzi highlighted how much has been done over the summer months to prepare for opening day, and said, “Our special thanks to all custodial, maintenance and grounds crews for their

accomplishments.”

“Today’s tour was terrific, and I was delighted have a chance to see some of the complete and inprogress improvements for the district that have been taking place during the summer, while also noting our fall athletic teams have begun their practice schedules,” said Board trustee Glenn Reed.

Sandy Relief Still Available The Islip Town Department of Economic Development has announced that the first Sandy-impacted small businesses have been approved for assistance grants, which come from New York State’s Small Business Storm Recovery Program.

Through this program, small businesses are eligible for grants of up to $50,000 or more depending on the extent of a business’s storm-related losses. The grants are designed to help replace machinery, inventory, furniture and fixtures, and other physical resources that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

“In the immediate

aftermath of Hurricane Sandy our Economic Development department established a point of contact between local businesses and the agencies that could aid the recovery process,” said Councilman John Cochrane, liaison to the department. “I urge every business that suffered losses as a result of the storm to contact us and see what programs might be available to help in the recovery.”

The application process is steered by local Small Business Development Centers, who offer free assistance and guidance through every stage of the grant approval process.

Businesses that do not qualify for outright grants

may still be eligible for low-interest loans.

Students To Perform

Four student-musicians from Islip High School have been selected for state-level honors in music.

As noted by the district’s director of fine and performing arts, Vincent Green, the musicians were selected for All-State based upon their performance at last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival.

“We are especially proud to have garnered three of the highly coveted 24 spots in vocal jazz,” said Mr. Green. The students will prepare for the festival with Dr. Rich Harris Jr. and Steve Campanella, music

teachers at Islip High School.

The New York All-State bands, choruses, orchestras and jazz ensembles are honors groups comprised of the top students from school music departments across the state. The eight groups will be directed by renowned guest conductors and perform in one of three concerts at the Eastman Theater during the NYSSMA Winter Conference on December 7th and 8th.

Ensemble (prepared by Dr. Rich Harris Jr.) Nick Fanizzi, Bass Ethan Fields, Bass Rosie Turner, Alto All-State Wind Ensemble (prepared by Steve Campanella) Michael Massaro, Alto Saxophone In addition to being selected for the vocal jazz ensemble, Ethan was selected as an alternate for French Horn and Rosie was selected as an alternate for mixed chorus/women’s ensemble.

September 11th, 2001: a day many will never forget, a day that the Bay Shore Community honored with the creation of the 9/11 Memorial Garden at Bay Shore Middle School. Through the generous donations of several community members, the memorial will honor members of our community whose lives were lost. The memorial’s

centerpiece includes a brick planter, which will feature a metal beam from one of the World Trade Center (WTC) towers. The piece is mounted and a marble engraving displays the names of three Bay Shore alumni who lost their lives - Chris Quackenbush, Nicholas Chiofalo and Tony Gallagher.

The memorial’s first phase was completed

and an unveiling and ceremony was held on September 11th, 2013 at Bay Shore Middle School with members from the Bay Shore Schools and community.

Memorial Garden Ceremony

Sunny skies and big smiles went hand in hand on September 9th as students at East Islip High School, East Islip Middle School and the East Islip School District’s four elementary schools – Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point – enjoyed a successful first day of school. As they began a new scholastic year, finding their classes, friends and buses, they embarked on a new set of educational challenges and adventures.

“It was a wonderful opening day at Connetquot Elementary,” said Deborah Smith, the school’s principal. “We welcomed all of our kindergartners and other new entrants in

various grade levels as well as our returning students.”

One major change at Connetquot was the school’s entrance, now located through the new main lobby located on the Manhattan Boulevard side of the building. “This move was to further ensure the safety of our students and to increase the security of the school,” explained Smith. “The entire staff worked in collaboration to make the transition a smooth and successful one. We wish all of the students a terrific 20132014 school year filled with many outstanding achievements.”

Everything went smoothly over at JFK, according to Principal Aileen O’Rourke. “After a

relaxing summer vacation, the students, faculty and staff returned enthusiastic and ready to learn,” she said. “It was exciting to see all of our children.

The students were looking forward to meeting their new teachers and were thrilled to see their friends.

We are off to a wonderful start at JFK Elementary.”

Ruth C. Kinney Principal Danielle Naccarato was just as pleased. “It was a wonderful first day at RCK,” she said. “There were so many smiling faces and the excitement was amazing! We are looking forward to a terrific school year.”
