This annual event celebrates the achievements of EWGA members; awards will be given out for our 13 league championships and league tournaments.

NYSSMA Winners Sodasia Thompson and Asia Stewart, both Seniors at Bay Shore High School, were selected to participate in NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) All-State performing ensembles.

Both students were recommended by their Choir teacher, Mr. Christopher Bilella, and received the highest possible score (100) on their NYSSMA solos last spring. This December,

Sodasia will be performing with NYSSMA’s VocalJazz Ensemble and Asia Stewart will be performing with the Mixed Choir at the Eastman Theater in Rochester.

In addition, two other Bay Shore High School students, Paul Mangels and Zachary Sumski, were selected as winners of this year’s NYSSMA Electronic Music Composition Competition. They have been invited to attend

the NYSSMA All-State Festival in Rochester this December, where they will participate in composition workshops. Their original compositions will also be featured in a concert alongside work from other students from across New York.

Congratulations to these outstanding students on their admirable musical achievements.

Crowds cheered as Bay Shore students enrolled in the Lynn Clark Summertime Players drama camp performed Fame The Musical.

For the 36th consecutive year, Bay Shore High School has hosted this amazing summer experience for students entering grades 5-12. Like the 80’s movie of the same name, Fame The Musical takes place in the famous New York City School for Performing Arts.

The production featured a true ensemble cast with lead parts played by incoming 9th graders Michaela DeJoseph and Sabrina Song. Joining them on stage were veteran Senior performers Remy DeJoseph, James Vaughan, Kyle Souhrada and Derek Jenkins.

Other cast members included Zander Pacella, MarchaelGiles, Genevieve Bryant, Deijah Faulkner and Erin McArdle. Recent Bay Shore graduates

Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that.

What a difference one week can make, right?

I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.)

But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties.

Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all...

Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.

I was elected City Clerk, County Scribe and even

nominated as my County’s candidate for Boys’ Nation.

In addition I assumed the role as Director for the Statesman TV News, as well as the Head Writer for the Statesman Printed News.

I would not have been able to fulfill all of these

opportunities without the guidance, support and sponsorship of the Police Association of Suffolk County. This group of men comprised of many, if not all, retired policemen, truly made my dream a reality. They trusted me with their support, and I hope I did not disappoint them.

Just last week, I was invited back to the Board Meeting and gave a summation of my experience during my week at Boys’ State. It has been an amazing road, and I am very glad that I found the Police Association of Suffolk County.

I would like to finalize this week’s article with a big ‘thank you’ to the Police Association of Suffolk County!

This summer, I was given the opportunity to compete at the American Legion Boys’ State Program. For around 1,100 of Long Island’s most promising leaders, this week away from our parents was a big deal.

Even though I was rejected from my first application for the program, I did not lose hope.

I was soon referred to Mr. Marco Calise, one of the Vice Presidents of the Police Association of Suffolk County. He had faith in me. At one of their meetings, the board, as well as the entire group, debated upon many boys vying for the position.

I am proud to say that I was chosen to represent Suffolk County, the Police Association of Suffolk

Grant Awarded The Child Life Program at Good Shepherd Hospice has been awarded a grant from the Starlight Children’s Foundation totaling $2,650. This grant will allow the Child Life Department to purchase pediatric memory making supplies for photo journals, 5 Flip video cameras, 2 photo printers, 10 USB memory sticks and 10 photo and ink kits. This equipment will help with legacy building projects for the young patients and families.

The Starlight Foundation of NY*NJ*CT exists to brighten the lives of seriously ill children in the tri-state area. In the 17th year of the Pediatric Hospital Support Program, they have awarded nearly $12,500,000 to eightyseven hospitals.

Prep Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin.

• Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint.

In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

• Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be

masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

• Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

• Prepare your paint.

Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do

not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

• Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Saturday, August 24th, marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. To mark this historic occasion, the Islip Town Branch NAACP celebrated its annual Backto-School/Stay-in-School Rally.

This annual event takes place on the Central Islip Campus of the New York Institute of Technology and is run by one of America’s oldest national civil rights groups, one whose primary goal is to promote education and

access to educational support systems/programs.

The Islip NAACP has worked diligently to expand their outreach and provide school supplies and resources to disadvantaged youth and families.

Bay Shore School District’s new Superintendent, Dr. Salmon, was among the motivational speakers who welcomed returning students of Islip Town schools to the upcoming school year. She offered encouraging words designed to inspire

success.

Bay Shore Schools volunteers of all ages met throughout the summer to help organize what became an extremely successful day.

On the day of the event, volunteers ran Field Day games and distributed food, prizes and free school supplies while music played. Hundreds of community members turned out for a sunny day filled with reverberations of that historic march of five decades ago.

Musical Debut On August 19th, Gardiner Manor School Music teacher Joshua Z. Kant had his newest original musical performed in a staged reading at the Koussevitzky Arts Center at Berkshire Community College (BCC) in Pittsfield MA. The two-act piece, entitled The Temporary Professor, was written

with his collaborator/ bookwriter/lyricist Liv Cummins. The cast of fourteen was comprised of mostly BCC Theatre Department students and alumni, but featured some guest professionals including lead actress Jeanne Ranlet (a.k.a.

Mrs. Kant, Bay Shore High School Art teacher and musical theater

performer).

The performance followed a ten-day workshop and featured an audience “talk-back” moderated by BCC faculty.

The newest draft of the show will be performed at BCC with the same cast on September 22nd.

Congratulations to Mr. Kant on this wonderful accomplishment.

Ocean To Sound Relay

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a dedicated supporter of health and wellness initiatives on Long Island, announces its sponsorship of the Greater Long Island Running Club’s 28th Annual Ocean To Sound Relay. The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay, which takes place on Sunday, September 29th, will take runners across both Nassau and Suffolk Counties with 120 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the South

Shore to the North Shore of Long Island. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bethpage has sponsored the event.

Nearly 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the relay, which will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, money raised from the relay will go directly to support the organization’s Long Island Chapter. Long Island runner

Alan End, who founded the relay back in 1985, is the relay director.

According to Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky, “The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is an exciting race for both runners and spectators. We invite you to come down and cheer on your family, friends and neighbors sprinting across Long Island.”

The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay starts at Jones Beach State Park and

finishes on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. 120 eight-person teams will navigate their way through 15 different Long Island townships starting in Wantagh, traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, crossing into Huntington and hitting the Long Island Sound in Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and

Syosset, reaching Oyster Bay Cove, and finally hitting Oyster Bay. “The Ocean to Sound Relay is one of the most unique and anticipated events of every year, attracting runners from the entire tri-state area,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “We’re happy to participate again, and witness some amazing athletic abilities, organized impeccably by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and all for a deserving cause.”

There are 15 different categories for runners including men’s, women’s, mixed open, men’s masters, women’s masters, mixed masters, men’s seniors masters, women’s seniors masters, men’s super seniors, women’s super seniors, corporate, law enforcement/firefighter, physically challenged, one person team, and running for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A gala post race party affectionately called the “Best Post-Race Party in the Northeast” will take place immediately following the relay at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park on the shoreline of beautiful Oyster Bay Harbor near the

finish line, where awards will be presented in each of the individual categories to each member of the top three teams in each category.

“The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is extremely grateful for the generous support of the Greater Long Island Running Club and Bethpage Federal Credit Union,” said Sara Lipsky, Executive Director of the Long Island Chapter. “It is because of organizations like them, LLS can continue to fulfill its mission - to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.”

Brentwood Public Library has started a new conversation group for individuals who are interested in improving their English as a second language skills in the workplace.

“We have named this program Business English,” said Myrna Velez, a reference librarian at Brentwood Public Library.

The goals are to: • Help individuals improve their vocabulary that is commonly used in the work environment * • Help individuals feel more confident in speaking English in business situations such as meetings, dealing with clients, appointments • Enhance participants understanding of business concepts by discussing business news and business related texts • Help individuals gain confidence in their English skills related to the work environment The seed for Business English was a program presented at Stony Brook

University’s Small Business Development Center called, “English for Entrepreneurs.”

Riano, MBA, a NYS Certified Business Advisor, and The Hispanic Initiative Coordinator for the SBDC, the syl- labus of their program is based on core business areas where students develop their skills during a 44 hour course and then present their results to a panel for critic and grading.

Brentwood’s Business English has a broader objective to include employees as well as entrepreneurs and is designed as an ongoing informal conversation group where a moderator and attendees practice English and discuss relevant topics in a relaxed atmosphere. On Thursday, October 10th, Islip Food for Hope will once again host its annual Thanksgiving Breakfast to continue its special fund to purchase food baskets for needy families within the Town of Islip. This year’s event will be held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook beginning at 8 a.m.

A “Thanksgiving Breakfast Committee” was formed approximately 30 years ago and it included the Town Supervisor, Town management,

employees and community members. This committee was formed as an act of goodwill and hosted an annual Supervisor’s Thanksgiving Breakfast Fundraiser to purchase turkeys for clients of Town programs and agencies in the Youth Bureau, Human Development and Handicapped Services Divisions.

Over the years the “Breakfast” has expanded, and last year 425 baskets of Thanksgiving meal provisions were delivered

to clients of 57 different community agencies and local churches. This year we hope to exceed that number and provide baskets to more families in need.

Senior Matt Walter – playing running back, outside linebacker and placekicker – was the star of the day on both offense and defense, racking up a superlative 100 rushing yards, two

touchdowns, a 26-yard field goal, two sacks, six tackles and a fumble recovery. Other highlights included EI running back Jack Hannigan’s 75 yards rushing and 6-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Valoy, and Erik Adon’s 8-yard touchdown late in the game, putting the game out of reach for the Wildcats.

The game also marked the official return of the East Islip High School Pep

Band, which along with the school’s cheerleading squad, invigorated the proud and loud crowd of East Islip fans. The reinstatement of the pep band, directed by Christopher Neske, was accomplished through a $3,336 grant donation from the East Islip Youth Football League.

Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms.

Scale Back On Materials One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost.

When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Paint Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Cavernous bathrooms that look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick

a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

Update Hardware A new faucet or some new cabinet pulls can make the room look new and fresh without breaking the bank. Match finishes throughout the bathroom so everything will be cohesive. When shopping for a new shower head, choose a model that also conserves water. This way you will be making cosmetic and energysaving renovations at the same time.

DIY Handling labor yourself instead of hiring workers can reduce the cost of bathroom remodels considerably. It is possible to buy fully assembled bathroom vanities and install them yourself. Even installing a new toilet is relatively easy with the help of a friend.

There are a number of ways to make bathroom renovations a bit easier and more affordable. Even nominal changes can give the space an entirely different look and feel, which can make the room more enjoyable and help improve a home’s resale value in the process.

The 3rd Fall Garden & Harvest Festival will take place at Bayard Cutting Arboretum, located in Oakdale, on Saturday, October 5th, and Sunday, October 6th. Events and activities will take place near the Dahlia garden and are slated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The day will feature horticultural and family activities that will include Dahlia garden tours, farm tours, demonstrations and presentations, soil testing and advice, landscaping displays, wool spinning and weaving, model train exhibit, face painting, festival bingo, National League of American Pen Women Art Show, food and music. Local, produce, as well as fall plants, will

be available for purchase.

Admission is $15 per car, or $7 with a valid Empire Passport. All proceeds go to supporting the care of the trees at Bayard Cutting Arboretum.

Activities, demonstrations and garden/farm tours are included in the admission fee. The Manor House will

be available for tours at $8 per person. Pumpkins for painting will be available for $2.

Simple Bathroom Renovations

Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned,

and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree.

Pruning also may depend

on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property.

Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

• Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that

are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned.

Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs.

• Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned.

• Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward

Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped.

Music For Life Fundraiser Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families.

Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous

DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead.

Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season.

• Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort.

Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers.

Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well.

Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

• Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. • Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.
