The Clean-Up is a global event coordinated by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy. One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts…

But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos.

Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist.

Let’s all hang in there.

Together, we can – and will – get through this.

And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Suffolk County Community College tested its new online application at East Islip High School on October 11th, under the supervision of Suffolk Community Colleges Guidance Officer Cheryl Every-Wurtz. This pilot program marked the first time that high school seniors at the school who were interested in attending SCCC the following year were asked

to go online to complete their applications, allowing the college’s employees to access these students’ applications immediately and thus speeding up the process for the graduating seniors.

“East Islip High School has arranged for two visits in the month of October for our students to come down with their electronic notification and meet with the SCCC

representative,” said the school’s director of careers and student services, Israel Malinowitzer. “We believe that this pilot program is just the beginning and other colleges will soon be doing electronic applications at high schools as well.”

Rodriguez, who is deaf and used American Sign Language to communicate, currently attends a BOCES culinary program on food preparation and service as well as interning at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel in Ronkonkoma. He is slated to graduate in June 2014 and intends to work full-time after graduation.

The South Shore 4H Club, in conjunction with Keep Islip Clean (KIC), participated in this year’s 28th Annual International Coastal Clean Up. The Cleanup is a global event coordinated by the American Littoral Society and the Ocean Conservancy. The 4H group of 25 members, ages 9-16, cleaned up Quintuck Creek and its surrounding waterways and marshlands in East Islip.

The group coordinated 5 boats, with smaller boats run by 4H members that could access the more shallow arms of the creek. “We were extremely surprised

that we collected 400 lbs of garbage. We never realized there was so much. It’s hard to believe so many boats just drive right by that much garbage everyday,” says Paul Rodriguez,4H President and Junior at St. Anthony’s High School.

The South Shore 4H Club’s mission revolves around environmental stewardship and participation in this event demonstrates global, national and local environmental awareness.

On October 9th, six Keep Islip Clean members from Islip High School were inducted into the Town of Islip’s Keep Islip Clean Junior Commissioner Program. These seniors have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and community service during their time in the KIC Club.

Following their official induction, the JCs will immediately begin planning their first initiative, an e-waste

recycling program.

KIC is a not-for-profit community service organization dedicated to a cleaner, prouder Islip Township. Their goals are to positively change behavior through education and example, raise awareness about the effect that an uncaring attitude toward littering has on our quality of life, and encourage the values of ownership, service and civic responsibility among residents.
