n Wednesday, October 9th, Fifth Avenue School students participated in an assembly to kick-off their “Fill Your Bucket” Character Education program. Mrs. Frimmer and Mrs. York explained the program to the students before treating them to a story about how they could be “bucket fillers” by helping others or being kind.

Students then sang the song Fill Your Bucket, led by Mrs. Bertolino, to reinforce the concepts they learned.

On Thursday night, November 14th, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Venturing Crew 777 of Holbrook/ Ronkonkoma (with Members from Shirley to Babylon) will be holding its membership recruitment at the Cherokee Street School, 130 Cherokee Street in Ronkonkoma.

Crew 777 is a co-ed Boy Scout unit for young men and ladies between

the ages of 14-20. While focused on the outdoors, they also take part in other non-outdoor activities and community service.

Trips have included: Backpacking in Colorado and New Mexico, canoeing through the interior of Alaska, kayaking, sailing and biking on South Padre Island, whitewater rafting in West Virginia, and caving.

The crew’s 2014 trip is being planned with visions on a sailing trip to the Bahamas, kayaking in North Carolina or taking part in a Swamp Trek in Louisiana.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Long Island Chapter (AFPLI) is pleased to announce that Karen and Frank Boulton, residents of Brightwaters, will be honored as recipients of the Horace Hagedorn Outstanding Philanthropist Award at Philanthropy Day 2013.

This award recognizes an individual or family whose generosity inspires others to give and make a difference in the Long Island community by actively advancing philanthropy.

Karen and Frank Boulton’s accomplishments will be celebrated at Philanthropy Day 2013’s Awards Luncheon being held on Friday, November 15th at the Huntington Hilton, 598 Broad Hollow Road in Melville.

Driven by a sense of gratitude, hard work and dedication, Karen and Frank Boulton exemplify

the spirit of the Horace Hagedorn Outstanding Philanthropist Award. The Boulton’s involvement with the YMCA of Long Island and the Great South Bay YMCA in Bay Shore was a large part of the rebirth of Bay Shore’s downtown community.

Mr. Boulton served as Chairman of the Board of Managers for nearly ten years, and chaired the Capital Campaign that raised $6.2 million to build the YMCA. Among many other endeavors, Karen lent her expertise to help guide the Y staff through the certification process for the early childhood program. The Boulton’s donated the Regent Theater to the YMCA, which became the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts.

As founder and CEO of the Long Island Ducks, Frank chairs the team’s charitable arm, The QuackerJack Foundation,

which works with more than 800 Long Island not-for-profits. They raise money for the fight against breast cancer, support Ride for Life to raise money to fight ALS, and support many other organizations.

Mr. Boulton is a graduate of Villanova University, which he credits for his success and for shaping his perspective on philanthropy. A member of the President’s Leadership Council of Villanova University, his continuing support and generosity was recognized in 2012 with the presentation of the St. Thomas of Villanova Alumni Medal, the highest honor awarded to alumni.

As my quest to find the perfect college is in full swing, my brother is becoming exposed to the game that we call college admissions. My brother, your typical sixteen yearold, is good in school, plays a sport and is well rounded.

He is excited about the idea of selecting the school of his dreams, but lost as to where to start.

Thankfully, his big brother is moderately well-versed in the art of the “College Application Process.”

In my few years of college research, I have learned that, in order to be a candidate who admissions officers salivate over, a student shouldn’t necessarily be good in

several things, but excel in one thing. As decades have passed, colleges no longer look for the wellrounded student, but for the well-rounded class.

This means that every college needs a class full of athletes, academic giants and leaders, among various other classifications. Gone are the days where the jack-of-all-trades student could virtually assure him/herself of acceptance anywhere.

Now, the student that is well versed in one particular trade is arguably more appealing to an admissions officer.

In addition to excelling in a particular field, a student can benefit from a “legacy situation.” This jargon

is another way of saying that, if a parent attended a specific college, you have a hook. My parents went to SUNY Oneonta, so if I applied there, theoretically, I would have the edge over an identical candidate with parental ties to SUNY Oswego. This link is beneficial to a college in an unexpected way. A long line of graduates with your last name opens up the door for big donations.

Although I am just a senior with very basic knowledge of the college admissions process, I should be able to guide my little brother through what was arguably the most stressful segment of my life thus far.

Photographs & Still Frames By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history.

This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane.

One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you.

With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill.

Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil.

Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that.

Photography will always be something of a passion for me.

And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

The Fourth Annual Harvest Sunset Dinner to raise funds for pediatric multiple sclerosis (MS) research conducted through the Lourie Center for Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital will take place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, on Thursday, November 21st from 6 to 9 p.m.

Local Businesses Honored

Nine small businesses were honored last week for their resilience and determination in a difficult economy. The Islip Town Small Business Awards ceremony brought together leaders from government and industry at the annual event and recognized small biz owners for their contributions to our economy and our community. Each of the recipients has proven their ability to weather economic difficulties while maintaining their level of community outreach. The awards were presented to businesses across a wide variety of industries, but all meet the federal definition of a small business – having less than 500 employees.

“The success of a local business isn’t always measured by their profit margin, but rather by what they are able to give back to the community over an extended period of time,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Each of these businesses, whether they have four employees or four hundred, consistently demonstrates their commitment to the greater Islip community, and it is a privilege to give them a little credit for their contributions.”

Historically it has been a popular location for school field trips and laser light shows for all age levels.

In keeping with their wonderful reputation for educational programs, the planetarium decided to run a contest whereby students who visited would have the opportunity to write about their experience and submit a new name for the school program they attended.

Last year third grade students from Gardiner Manor Elementary School were learning about how “writing has power” and were encouraged by their teachers to enter the contest after they

took a school field trip to see the program titled “Introduction to the Solar System”.

Oliver Shellenberg, now a fourth grader submitted “Take a Wild Ride Through the Solar System” and was the winner of the contest.

by Lauren Moran, Jayde Nielsen and Tabitha Rivera, also fourth graders were recognized at the assembly.

Timber Point Elementary School students in art teacher Christina SperaBartlett’s classroom recently participated in a seasonal skeleton project that incorporated many aspects of the Common Core State Standards.

The students explored the bones of the human

skeletal system, learning the shapes as well as the scientific names for each bone. They then worked collaboratively to create artistic representations of the bone shapes, measuring their work against each other to determine the correct sizing and proportions

and labeled each bone on their assembled skeletons with the correct name. The project was followed by a reading of Margery Cuyler’s “Skeleton Hiccups.”

UNICEF VOLUNTEERS - Bay Shore Middle School’s National Jr. Honor Society members have been volunteering to collect donations for UNICEF, a national relief organization that provides food, water, medical services and other support efforts to children and their families around the world. We are proud of our students who have been donating their lunch periods to help others in need.

FIRE STATION VISIT - Recently, Brook Avenue School Kindergarten classes walked with their teachers and parent volunteers to the Bay Shore Fire Station down the street. A volunteer firefighter spoke to the students about fire safety, showed them all the equipment firefighters wear when reporting to a fire, and let them climb onto a fire truck. The children really enjoyed the trip: they soaked in a lot of information and appreciated the fire hats, pencils and coloring books they brought back with them to school.

SOFTBALL HALL OF FAME - Congratulations to Jim McGowan, former Bay Shore High School Softball Coach and Social Worker, on his induction into the New York State High School Softball Hall of Fame, Class of 2014. A ceremony honoring the 2014 inductees, announced recently by the NYSSCOGS and NYSSWA (New York State Coaches Association and State Sportswriters Association) will take place on June 14th at the Mudville Softball Complex in Herkimer, New York. FILLING BUCKETS - On Wednesday, October 9th, Fifth Avenue School students participated in an assembly to kick-off their “Fill Your Bucket” character education program. Mrs. Frimmer and Mrs. York explained the program to the students and before treating them to a story about how they could be “bucket fillers” by helping others or being kind. Students then sang the song Fill Your Bucket, led by Mrs. Bertolino, to reinforce the concepts they learned.

The College Board has recognized six members of East Islip High School’s Class of 2014 as AP Scholars with Distinction. Seniors Jackson Domenech, William Farrell, Christina Giordanella, Maria Guadugno, William Meehan and Grant Stroehlein were recently awarded this honor, along with 22 of East Islip’s 2013 graduates. Meehan also was named a National AP Scholar, the highest level of recognition.

In order to be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, a student must

receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all of his or her Advanced Placement exams and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of those exams. AP courses, which earn college credit for high school students, are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or above qualifying students for college course credit.

For 2013, East Islip High School had 29 AP Scholars (15 current seniors and 14 graduates), who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams; 13 AP Scholars with Honor (senior Leah Stevens

Distinguished Citizens The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is proud to announce the recipients of the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award. The Distinguished Citizens Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership of citizens in our communities. Since 1965, the Suffolk County Council has honored a list of truly outstanding Long Islanders, such as Ward Melville, Robert Moses, H. Lee Dennison, and Dr. Shirley Strumm Kenny.

This year’s honorees are Cathleen Hansen (East Setauket), David Hunt (Fort Salonga) and Floyd Sarisohn (Commack). All three know the value of Scouting first hand. Two of Cathleen’s sons have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Floyd Sarisohn, Senior Partner in the law firms of both Sarisohn Law Partners LLP and Sarisohn, Carner LeBow and DeVita, is an Eagle Scout and has been a member of the Order

of the Arrow since 1942.

David Hunt, President of Hunt Corporate Services, Inc., is an Eagle Scout and is currently an Eagle Scout Counselor.

For over a century the Boy Scouts of America has been the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values based leadership training.

This “youth” program has long-lasting benefits, to members once they become adults and to their communities.

who have demonstrated a successful school career both academically and artistically. As one of five winners in the “What The Arts Mean To Me” contest, selected from hundreds of applicants worldwide, her Imagine Life Without Music video will be showcased at national arts schools and conservatories including the Juilliard School, Rice University and the National Young Arts Foundation.

Although much of her development was gained from her work during summers, weekends and evenings, studying at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege and Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, and private lessons with Metropolitan Opera Orchestra principal flute Stefan Hoskuldsson, Stevens takes great pride in East Islip’s music department. “No school day would be complete without the support and guidance I receive from my teachers and peers in the music wing,” she said. “It’s a part of this school that continues to thrive and provide a platform of success for so many students, including myself.”

Leah Stevens, a senior at East Islip High School, has been selected as principal flute of the 2013 NAfME AllNational Honor Symphony Orchestra, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education. She will join more than 670 of the most musically talented high school student-musicians in the United States to perform on October 30th at a gala concert in the Presidential Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.

Organized by members of the National Association for Music Education, the NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus and jazz ensemble. These exceptional students will perform extremely

challenging music under the direction of four of the nation’s most prominent conductors: Dr. Peter Boonshaft, Miriam Burns, Rollo Dilworth and Rodney Whitaker. The symphony orchestra that Stevens will perform with is comprised of approximately 150 selected instrumentalists, all of whom had previously qualified for their state-level honor ensemble program.

Stevens had performed last December as principal flute in New York’s All-State Symphonic Band and in April at NAfME’s Eastern Division Conference.

“I am so honored to be selected,” says Stevens, a member of the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. “It’s the best way to summarize the achievements this year that I have worked so hard for.” Added Stephen Guarino, East Islip’s director of art and music, “Leah is our first principal flutist to make All-National, and we are very proud of her accomplishments.”

Stevens, ranked fourth in her senior Class of 2014, was recently named one of 20 award winners of the Long Island Arts Alliance ScholarArtist program, a prestigious award given annually to top Long Island seniors

Quilt Completed This past winter, the East Islip/Dowling SchoolBusiness Partnership joined with East Islip Middle School and three of the district’s elementary schools to work on a special Cancer Awareness Quilt in honor of World Cancer Day. Sixth-grade students in Dani Franzese’s family and consumer science classes learned sewing during the school year, including the basic skill

of sewing buttons, which they demonstrated to students from Connetquot, John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools. The older and younger students together sewed buttons on fabric in the shape of color-coded cancer-awareness ribbons.

The middle schoolers then worked to create one large combined quilt, which was finally completed in June with the aid of tailor Vicente

Vasquez, an East Islip parent and custodial employee at East Islip High School. “If it were not for Mr. Vasquez, this quilt would never be constructed,” said Franzese.

The finished Cancer Awareness Quilt will be presented at the East Islip Board of Education’s November 14th business meeting.
