t Connetquot Elementary School in Islip Terrace, secondgraders in Melissa Love’s class and Jennifer Rizzo’s kindergartners spend a few afternoons a month together nurturing their love of reading. Students meet with “book buddies” to read together and have small book talks. The Diabetes Health and Wellness Academy of N.Y.C. announced its 2013 Annual Gala Benefit will be held on December 6th from 7 p.m. through midnight at The Uniondale Marriott located at 101 James Doolittle Blvd in Uniondale. Post-Sandy Cleanup Initiative funding - $11 million - to restore marshes at three national wildlife refuges, improving the resiliency of the Long Island coast against future storms. An additional $1 million will be invested in projects to repair visitor facilities and Service assets damaged during the super storm.

“The marshes at Long Island refuges helped to protect inland areas

from the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager Michelle Potter. “We will focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants to return and restoring natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife

habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris

removal. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses.

Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks.

SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress.

For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance.

The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432

acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties.

Restoration and mitigation projects are part of a comprehensive, multi-agency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s one-year anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward.

Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas.

Toddler High Halloween

East Islip High School celebrated its annual Toddler High Halloween party on October 31st, sponsored by teacher Kelly Schwender’s Toddler High program, which pairs local preschoolers from the East Islip community with participating juniors and seniors at the high school.

The older students and their toddler “buddies”

– the latter decked out in costumes ranging from Spider-Man, Superman, Cinderella and Snow White to cowboys and pirates – walked hand in hand around the high school building, sharing the joy of Halloween as they stopped along the way to trick-ortreat with faculty.

“Mrs. Schwender did an outstanding job putting

the event together, and as always, the parents dressed their children in the cutest outfits,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “The faculty and staff were delighted to take part in this annual Halloween extravaganza for the toddlers of East Islip.”

East Islip High School alumnus Michael Russo recently visited the school to meet with students in the International Business Globalization Career Academy’s new VE Connected virtual firm.

Russo, currently attending Molloy College, was a member of the Business Academy while at East Islip and served as chief financial officer of the Academy’s prior Virtual Enterprise company, Mobile Revolution.

Serving as a mentor, the confident alumnus spoke to the Business Academy students, detailing what preparations they will need to make for the business plan competition entry to be submitted to the VE International Committee

on December 10th.

“Michael remembers all the hard work that went into preparing the business plan for his virtual company, and he offered to volunteer his time to help the new Business Academy students,” explained Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “VE Connected is delighted that he agreed to be a mentor, and his ability to connect with the students is wonderful to see. We look forward to having more of our former students come back and be mentors for their Career Academy.”

Russo’s exemplary work during his time in the East Islip virtual firm has yielded ongoing benefits.

“His experience as CFO in the high school opened

up many opportunities for him over the past two years,” said Malinowitzer.

“He is now involved with the VE International team and will be actively participating this year in some of their events. “ Since graduating from East Islip in 2012, Russo has excelled in all of his college courses and was elected president of Molloy’s sophomore class.

Popular both on campus and in the business community, he has been working at Morgan Stanley and plans to pursue a career in finance after graduation.

To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate.

Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest.

So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true.

Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same.

Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

ANTI-BULLYING SEMINAR - On Tuesday, October 29th, the Bay Shore Middle School PFA hosted an Anti-Bullying Seminar, led by Chris Poulos, for all Middle School students. Mr. Poulos captured the audience’s attention by incorporating exciting bike stunts into his presentation. Through the use of role play, skits and student participation, Mr. Poulos demonstrated how to both identify a bully and handle a bullying situation. He explored and explained the viewpoints of victims, bullies and bystanders while running through these simulations. Mr. Poulos also shared personal stories and the solutions that helped him deal with bullies while growing up.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has begun to renovate its Stoll Wing, home to preserved wild animal specimens brought back from around the world by Charles H. Stoll, a noted explorer and big-game hunter who was also a museum trustee and benefactor.

The most visible part of the project will be the restoration of the 20 mounted animal heads that crown the wall above the diorama exhibition cases.

George Dante, president of Wildlife Preservations of West Paterson, N.J., the taxidermist of choice for the American Museum of Natural History, took 20 of the heads back to his studio on October 30th to begin cleaning and restoring them. Other improvements include a new heating, ventilating and airconditioning system to insure preservation of the specimens.

In Stoll’s memory, his granddaughter, Lynnda Speer, and her husband, Roy, through the Roy M. Speer Foundation,

gave the Vanderbilt a gift of $100,000 to endow the restoration and modernization of the Stoll Wing and its dioramas.

(The wing was built in 1970 to complement the adjacent Habitat Room built decades earlier by William K. Vanderbilt II.) Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the Vanderbilt, said, “It’s very exciting to be able to have one of the world’s finest taxidermists undertake this project. It’s rare that we get the funding to do this. Since George was one of the taxidermists who accomplished the extremely difficult and spectacular restoration of our eight-ton, 32-foot whale shark -- the largest example of fish taxidermy in the world -- we naturally asked him if he would restore the Stoll Wing specimens.”

The species -- from the American Northwest, Canada and Africa -include a zebra, blue wildebeest, caribou, sika deer, black bear, moose, wapiti (a type of elk), big-

horned sheep and a male and female Arctic walrus.

The restoration work will be completed in two to three months.

During George Dante’s visit to the Vanderbilt, he returned a rare Galápagos marine iguana to Mr. Vanderbilt’s original Habitat Room. The iguana’s return is an interesting footnote in the history of the Vanderbilt Museum. In the 1920s, Mr. Vanderbilt hired specialists from the American Museum of Natural History to create his Habitat Room, and they inserted his iguana into a diorama of Galápagos wildlife.

Today, the Galápagos marine iguana is protected and cannot be collected.

So, when the American Museum of Natural History needed a Galápagos marine iguana for one of its own dioramas, they asked Dante to borrow the Vanderbilt’s iguana, and he made a cast of it for the museum’s exhibit.

Waiting to hear back from a college is stressful! After applying “early decision” to a toptier college last month, I have begun the nervewracking time period that can only be likened to purgatory. Waiting for that admissions packet to land in my mailbox is truly the most anxiety provoking task that I have ever been subjected to.

As tortuous as it was to apply to college, the wait is so much more stressful. Now that I have applied, I am starting to realize that my whole life has been a road leading up to this point. Every decision, every action

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter.

One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life.

Some say it is all luck.

Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay.

Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

Even if you were to try your whole life to be exactly what a college would desire, you could still get turned down.

There is no guarantee of admission. The entire college admissions process is one big gamble. If you don’t get in, it was not meant to be. If that particular college does not want you, another college will.

The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you.

Everything always works out for the best.

In the classroom, teachers helped students formulate conversationstarter questions that could be used to connect with a new “friend.” In the decorated cafeteria, teachers Mrs. Domanick and Miss Eisen, along with paraprofessionals, facilitated introductions and friendly interactions among students.

Students were excited to meet new peers in the

building, discovering similarities and differences between one another and connecting in meaningful ways. This program was a great way for young students to break down social barriers and reduce misconceptions and biases. It also gave students the opportunity to develop social skills and foster a caring learning community.

On October 29th, Gardiner Manor School participated in a nationwide program called “Mix It Up At Lunch Day.” This national campaign, launched by Teaching Tolerance, encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries.

On Sunday, November 3rd, more than 600 cancer survivors and family members were honored for their strength and courage at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s 9th Annual Cancer Survivors’ Day held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

Attendees were motivated by award winning vocalist, entertainer and cancer survivor, Kevin Sharp.

In remission since 1991, he is the only Make-AWish “wish” child to

become the wish request of other kids, bringing his experience with a rare form of cancer full circle. Like many patients diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Sharp is a survivor whose challenging experience has been an inspiration to others.

The Career Academy students participated by setting up the event and greeting the drivers, aided by the district’s substitute teachers, who came to drive and then stayed to assist with the large turnout.

“It really does take a community to make a difference in a child’s life,” added Malinowitzer, “and there is no better community to show its support for the children of East Islip than the East Islip community.”

Cancer Recital Held

East Islip Middle School student and aspiring musician Alexandra Stewart performed a recital on flute and piano at St. Mark’s Church in Islip on October 6th, raising close to $1,400 for cancer research.

Inspired by her mentor and private flute teacher, East Islip High School senior Leah Stevens, who raised money last year for

suicide prevention, Stewart decided to hold the recital to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Her band teacher, Concetta Stevens, lent a supportive hand and played two flute duets with Stewart during the event, while her piano teacher, Andrew Donato, assisted on guitar and bass during the jazz portion of the recital.

“I was glad to help raise money for breast cancer because my mom is a breast cancer survivor,” explained Stewart, a seventh-grader.

“I hope that others affected by breast cancer can also be survivors.”

An excellent student, Stewart has been playing piano and flute for four years now, and her advanced abilities for her age – she is playing at

NYSSMA Level 5 – yielded a SCMEA selection last year and a spot on the school’s jazz band. This was not the first time she has given back to the community – Stewart volunteered last Christmas at the Momentum Nursing Home to perform a holiday concert for the residents, and participates in and fundraises for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach each year alongside her mother. She also plays travel soccer and is a member of the junior varsity tennis team, scoring two goals on the morning of the recital.

ZUMBATHON - On Wednesday, October 23rd, Bay Shore Middle School participated in a “Zumbathon” to support Breast Cancer Awareness and the Inspiring Young Wings Scholarship. Students, parents and faculty alike enjoyed a fun-filled night of dancing, raffles, snacks and laughs while Middle School teacher Amy Scognamillo and Zumba instructors Christine LaMarca, Valerie Sanzone and Linda Angueira got the crowd moving. College Fair Provides Choices

More than 130 colleges, universities and military service branches from across the U.S. participated in East Islip High School’s Annual College Fair on October 8th, giving students and their parents a chance to obtain valuable information for their future educational and career choices.

Approximately 700 East Islip families attended the fair, held in the high school’s cafeteria, and spoke with admission counselors from different colleges and universities.

The event was arranged EAGLE SCOUT HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron (left) recently by Israel Malinowitzer, the congratulated William Farrell of Troop 205 of East Islip and Great River for achieving school’s director of careers the rank of Eagle Scout. Councilman Flotteron thanked William for his continued and student services, in collaboration with the service to the greater Islip community.

guidance counselor Jessica Pignataro regarding NCAA regulations for students interested in pursuing sports in a Division I or II college or university, and a Method Test Prep presentation for parents interested in helping their children improve their SAT exam scores.

“This was a real success for parents and students who are just starting out looking at colleges and planning which schools to visit,” said Malinowitzer, who was assisted by East Islip High School Career Academy program students Kim Amoia, Frank Argenti and Ericka Baie throughout the evening.

Camp Fundraiser

On October 19th, friends and members of the Shapiro family joined Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck board members at a fundraiser for the camp at Hurricane Grill and Wings in Syosset. The event was created in honor of Jodi Shapiro, a Special Education Administrator for Manhasset Schools, who suddenly passed away after a brief battle with cancer this summer.

Approximately 250 people attended the fundraiser. The event raised nearly $14,000, surpassing the fundraising goal of $10,000.

During the event, Mark Shapiro, Ms. Shapiro’s brother, spoke to attendees about his sister’s passion for helping special-needs children. He expressed how

important Camp Pa-QuaTuck’s mission was to her and how grateful he was for everyone’s generosity at the event.

Throughout the event, guests had the opportunity to enjoy live music, a silent auction, a 5/50 raffle and a hot wing eating contest, with all of the proceeds benefiting Camp Pa-QuaTuck.

Ms. Shapiro began working with the Manhasset School District in 2009. She implemented programs for children with special needs at Shelter Rock, Munsey Park, Our Lady of Grace, and St. Mary’s elementary schools.

In 2012, Ms. Shapiro was promoted to Assistant Director of Committees on Preschool and Elementary

Special Education.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating.
