Traveling with your pet can be a wonderful and bonding experience or a not so pleasant one. It’s all a matter of proper planning

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - With Pets

Continued From 2 thing you need is a sick pet when traveling. This means a visit to the vet for a medical checkup and to ensure that your pet is upto-date with all necessary vaccinations.

The veterinarian can also issue a health certificate for your pet. If you and your pet will be traveling across state lines, you must obtain a recent health certificate and a certificate of rabies vaccination. If your plans include traveling with your pet from the United States to Canada, you will need to bring along a certificate issued by a veterinarian that clearly identifies the animal and certifies that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 month period. Be sure to contact the government of the province you plan to visit as each province has its own requirements.

Plan for Restraint: Have a plan for how you’re going to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle. This is a crucial element of pet

travel that is not taken seriously enough. The reality is that hundreds of pets are injured or even killed each year because they are allowed free reign in cars, trucks, RVs, and SUVs. Even more real is the toll in human life and property damage caused when an “enthusiastic” animal distracts a driver, leading to an accident.

Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe when traveling in your vehicle. It’s important to familiarize your pet with the vehicle restraint of choice weeks or months before traveling so that they are comfortable.

Temporary ID Tag: In the unfortunate event that your pet runs off while you’re traveling. A temporary identification tag, along with a photo of your pet will help ensure their safe return. Attach a temporary ID tag to your pet’s collar in addition to their permanent tag.

Include the address and

phone number of where you’ll be staying along with your cell phone number and perhaps your email address. This is one of the most important aspects of traveling with your pet, but also one of the most overlooked. In addition, bring along a current photo of your pet.

A photograph will make it easier for others to help you find your lost pet.

Packing Essentials: When packing for your pet include an ample supply of your pet’s food. Don’t rely on stopping along the way to pick up their food or picking it up at your final destination. Their particular brand of food may not be readily available and it is not advisable to introduce your pet to a new brand of food while traveling. Other essentials to pack for your pet include collapsible travel food and water bowls, bedding, litter and litter box, leash, collar and tags, favorite toys, grooming supplies, a pet first-aid kit and any necessary medications.

And of course, be sure

to always have an ample supply of water available for your pet.

Secure Pet Friendly Accommodations: If you’re planning a long journey and will need to stay in lodging on the way to your final destination, be sure to secure these pet friendly accommodations before you hit the road.

Map out where you’ll be spending the night and arrange for lodging along the way. Our Search By Route will allow you to find pet friendly lodging along your route by plugging in your origination location and final destination. Pet policies do change some times without notice and accommodations may be limited so it’s recommended that you make reservations in advance.

Medical Records: In case of a medical emergency while traveling, it is advisable to bring along your pets medical records along with your vet’s contact information should they be needed for consultation.

Hitting The Road No Heads Out the Window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck.

Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous.

Frequent Pit Stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet.

Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet.

When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - With Pets Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach.

Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel.

Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!).

Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle.

the high school courtyard, each Medical Academy student was individually honored, “cloaked” in his or her first white coat, and congratulated

by Cheryl Davidson, the workforce director for North Shore-LIJ, East Islip Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi, Israel Malinowitzer, the school’s director of careers and student services, social studies teacher Frank LaBella, and English teacher Maude Walsh.

“The white coat ceremony signifies the beginning of your studies as a health care student,” Davidson told the assembled students,

who are all required to complete internships in a medical facility during the school year. “Although you are not going to recite the Hippocratic Oath today, this ceremony symbolizes your commitment to hard work, learning and the importance of compassion.

This is a rite of passage in the journey toward a career in health care.”

“Although the Medical Health and Technology Career Academy is in its second year, this is the first year that we have had a white coat ceremony,” said Malinowitzer. “Our students were delighted to receive their new lab coats.”

Active Troop Seeking Members Troop 292 is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Brentwood, and operates under the direction of Scoutmaster Charles Weiss and Assistant Scoutmaster Thomas Flanagan.

The Troop has hiked, backpacked, canoed and even watched Old Faithful erupt at a summer trip to Yellowstone National Park.

They have helped serve at the AHRC Holiday Party and delivered food baskets at Thanksgiving.

This year, three scouts from the troop have joined the ranks of Eagle Scouts.

Namely, John Mele at Beacon House project, Ian Flanagan at Sagtikos Manor and also Joseph Salerno at Seatuck Environmental

Center. Much time and effort has been spent by these young men to meet the requirements to join this elite group.

To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must: earn 21 Merit Badges (12 are specifically Eagle required), progress through six rank advancements: Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life then Eagle, and also plan, develop and implement a major service project for the community.

Their projects have supported Beacon House for Veterans, Sagtikos Manor historic site, and Seatuck Environmental Center.

Most of the scouts in

this troop work towards obtaining this distinction of an Eagle Scouts.

Scoutmaster Charles Weiss says, “few goals in life take as long to achieve as becoming an Eagle Scout. It is not for everyone. Some like to be active in scouting for the adventure, learning skills that only scouting teaches these days. Some enjoy the friendship based on shared positive experiences.

Those who want both and lead others to follow them go on to become Eagle Scouts.

Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments…

There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we?

No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings.

And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!?

Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious!

But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones.

For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year.

For spending quality time with those who mean the most.

It is time, time we cannot get enough of.

However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

The members of this year’s Medical Health and Technology Career Academy at East Islip High School were the recipients of white lab coats donated

by North Shore-LIJ Health System at a special white coat ceremony on October 24th, recognizing the significance of their choice of studies. This ceremony, traditionally held for students pursuing healthrelated careers, creates a psychological, intellectual and ethical contract for the health care profession and promotes empathy in the practice of medicine from the very start of medical training.

KIDS HELPING KIDS - South Country School students recently participated in the annual tradition of Kids Helping Kids® by collecting donations totaling $801.63 for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF 2013. These kindhearted students made the world a better place by helping to provide countless children around the world with clean water, nutrition, medicine, immunizations and education. Students from Mrs. Carino’s 4th and 5th grade class organized this event. Kids truly do have the power to change the world.

In October, 7th graders studying Spanish at Bay Shore Middle School were treated to a special presentation to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Alfred Peña, of Rhythmology Dance Studio, and his assistant, Alina Manzueta, came to speak to students about Hispanic music and dance.

Mr. Peña has appeared in music videos, most notably for Bachata artist Prince Royce, and is a professional

competitive Salsa and Bachata dancer.

In addition to learning about the evolution of and changes within Hispanic music, students learned about Mr. Peña’s life journey, one that took him from studying Math and Business at Cornell University to following his passion for dance and becoming a U.S. Bachata champion, Salsa runner-up and opening his own dance studio.

Students were treated to a performance by the two dancers and the presentation concluded with students being invited on stage to learn basic Salsa and Bachata steps.

This special assembly was coordinated by Bay Shore Middle School Spanish teacher Wendy Mercado, with special help from Viki Zimolka, and was sponsored by the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund.

Intent To Play TRI-M CAR WASH - On Saturday, October 26th, the Bay Shore Middle School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society held a Car Wash at Fifth Avenue School. The students washed cars and raised $500 for the organization. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The rest of the money will be used to offset the cost of a field trip to Lincoln Center later in the year.

LEARNING ABOUT FIRE SAFETY - The Bay Shore Schools/Great South Bay YMCA UPK program at Mary G. Clarkson School celebrated Fire Safety by having firefighters from the Bay Shore Fire Department come and visit with students. The firefighters taught the children about fire safety and the importance of knowing to “Stop, Drop and Roll.” Students also had the opportunity to sit inside a fire truck and see all of its equipment. The Bay Shore Fire Department’s visit was a wonderful experience for all the students.

Four standout studentathletes at Islip High School have officially committed to continuing their athletic careers at the university level. On November 15th, Vanessa Juengerkes, Hana Lepore, Kieran Mullins and Kylie Ohlmiller signed National Letters of Intent to play Division I athletics.

Vanessa, a lefty pitcher for the varsity softball team, was named the League V Pitcher of the Year in 2012 and was selected as All-County

and All-League during her years as a Buccaneer.

She will play softball at Dowling College.

A four-year player for the girls varsity lacrosse team, Hana was named an All-League player and received the Unsung Hero award as a freshman.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was recently selected to receive the Caron Legal Professional/Uniformed Public Service Award.

This award recognizes an individual who has done an outstanding job in either the legal or public service fields by combating the fight against chemical dependency through due process of the law, prevention and education.

He was nominated for the award by Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, the Executive Director of the Long Island Council on Drug and

Alcoholism.

DeMarco, who accepted the award during a ceremony last week held at Adelphi University, thanked the Caron Center and Dr. Reynolds for their support, and stated “Our success is a credit to the many officers, community groups and volunteers who help us reach hundreds of young people each year with our prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.”

Sheriff DeMarco has devoted significant resources to helping combat teen drug use through prevention

programs, such as “Test, Don’t Guess” and the “S.T.O.P.P.E.D. Program,” as well as by connecting criminally drug-involved youth to appropriate treatment programs during and following a period of incarceration.

Community Efforts Honored

The Great South Bay YMCA recently hosted a volunteer event to build a playground at their facility in Bay Shore. They were selected for this project because they serve the Bay Shore community, an area that was hit hard by Super-Storm Sandy.

Over 500 children play at their playground every day, and marking their 20th Anniversary they were in need of an upgrade. The event was part of “Project

Rebuild,” sponsored by BNP Paribas International Bank and KaBOOM a nonprofit organization, which is dedicated to childhood activity and play. With a Creative Drawing Project this past summer, many of the young members of the YMCA helped design the playground.

The YMCA is always there for the community under the dedicated leadership of its Executive Director, Bob Pettison… along

with the very dedicated staff and many supportive volunteers.

Treasurer Carpenter, along with many volunteers, was there to support the event. “It is always nice to see the community come together with a common goal, especially for children. This will be a great playground for the children to enjoy for many years,” commented Carpenter.

Text Free Teen Driving In observance of National Teen Personal Safety Awareness Week, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau is helping to spread the word about the dangers of texting while driving, an epidemic that is rapidly spreading across America. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of teens in New York State and texting and distracted driving is a factor in 8 out of 10 accidents. The Islip Youth Bureau is distributing Wrist Band/ Phone Guards empowering High School students to be safe TEXT FREE DRIVERS. “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading killer among teenagers in New York State,” noted Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “And texting and driving is a significant factor in 8 out 10 accidents. We commend high school students who realize and appreciate the serious consequences of texting and driving. Texting and driving is dangerous to everyone in the car and everyone else on the road.”

High School students will be able to get free “DNT TXT N DRV” wrist band/phone guards at their schools. The bands, which can be worn or wrapped around a cell phone to block texting, will serve

as reminders of the dangers involved. Even a quick text message can be deadly.

In addition to the bands, students are encouraged to take the Text Free Driving Pledge. Some statistics

Unity Day

Several students from Bay Shore High School’s Holocaust Studies course participated in the Suffolk County Unity Day program at Suffolk County Community College.

Focusing on “The Immigrant Experience,” the program included

several guest speakers and a panel discussion. Among the presenters was Joselo Lucero, brother of the late Marcelo Lucero who was the victim of a tragic hate crime on Long Island. Bay Shore’s participation in the event was facilitated

by Social Studies teacher

Mrs. Adrienne Morpurgo, who said her students “took away the message of treating everyone equally regardless of differences.”

The students will incorporate their Unity Day experiences into Holocaust Studies’ overarching focus on tolerance.

Bay Shore Brook Avenue School students do so many things that contribute to their school’s warm and productive family-like atmosphere that Principal Mrs. Vorwald and the faculty decided it was time to implement a consistent, school-wide system for recognizing these contributions. CARE PACKAGE CONTRIBUTIONS - To honor Veterans Day and assist Girl Scout Troop #222, Mary G. Clarkson students and families contributed to care packages for military troops stationed overseas. Numerous items were collected during the donation drive, including toothbrushes, chapstick, cotton swabs and playing cards. In a display of true community spirit, The Bay Shore Lions Club picked up the items and will pack and ship them to our brave troops serving around the world.

The council members planned the sale, made the bracelets, conducted advertising, asked their peers for help, collected student donations, made banners and signs to use during the sale, and handed out fliers which were sent home with each student at Timber Point. They also worked the tables at the sale, selling bracelets for $1 each to numerous customers including other students, teachers, parents, neighbors and even Board of Education trustee Kim Phillips.

“The children of the student council – along

with many students who donated their time and bracelets; parents who donated their time, brought down pizza and hot chocolate, and made donations to the cause; and teachers who drove to the school to donate in person – worked so very hard for this fundraiser,” said Mercurio. “I am so proud of each and every person involved.”

Mercurio is planning a tour later this year for the students at the Long Island Cares facility, a trip that will add another layer of meaning to their efforts. “I know that these children learned so much during this experience,” she said.

“Hopefully it will serve as a stepping stone toward lives rich with community service in their future.”

The student council at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School raised more than $500 for Long Island Cares in just five hours at a Rainbow Looms of Love Sale on November 9th. Taking time on a cold Saturday, these determined students created Rainbow Loom bracelets and sold them on the front lawn of the school.

The objective of the fundraiser was to keep the student council involved in helping others. “The sale not only taught the children how much work it is to follow through with a community project, but also how rewarding it can be to do something for other people,” explained Patrice Mercurio, a teacher at Timber Point and fourthand fifth-grade adviser to the student council. “We

God Bless Our Vets Students at all four elementary schools in the East Islip School District participated in Veterans Day assemblies last week, honoring the service of the community’s military veterans through patriotic songs, poems, artwork, parades and musical performances. Students in each school had the opportunity to invite veterans in their families to attend the events, speak about the experiences serving in the armed forces, and enjoy snacks and refreshments. It was a welcome return to the district’s annual Veterans Day celebrations after Superstorm Sandy led to their cancellation last year.

At Timber Point Elementary’s assembly, held on the morning of November 7th, a variety of performances – by the school’s fourth- and fifth-grade chorus, directed

by Kathy Carter (“Thank You, Soldiers,” “America the Beautiful”); band students, led by Lynda Maniscalco (“Marines’ Hymn”); and the school’s orchestra, under the direction of Jaime DeMaria (“Yankee Doodle” and “America the Beautiful”) – set the patriotic mood, along with poetry readings by student council representatives Anna Koch, Peter Jacobsen and Frank Naccarato and an extensive question-and-answer session with the vets in attendance.

“The celebration at Timber Point was very moving and a great learning experience for our students,” said Principal Lisa Belz. “It was a wonderful tribute to those who serve and protect our country.”

At Ruth C. Kinney Elementary later that afternoon, visiting veterans were escorted in a Parade of Heroes walk through the hallways, led by representatives of Cub Scout Pack 38, and all those assembled viewed an impressive collection of patriotic student art in the

Gallery of Heroes.

“Our annual parade was a great success,” said RCK Principal Danielle Naccarato. “The students were chanting ‘USA!’ with such enthusiasm. It made me feel so proud to be an American and even prouder that our students were able to honor the men and women who have and continue to serve our country and provide for our freedom.”

At its monthly business meeting on November 14th, the East Islip Board of Education honored the combined efforts of staff and students in East Islip Middle School’s family and consumer science classes, students from Connetquot, John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools, the East Islip/ Dowling School-Business Partnership, and parent volunteer and master tailor Vicente Vasquez, who

Throughout the week, students in kindergarten through 12th grade learned about the dangers

together created a special Cancer Awareness Quilt in honor of World Cancer Day. Presenting the finished quilt were middle school student government representatives Madison Lane and Maggie Ruland, middle schools FACS representatives Erin Meagher and Stephanie Milito, Connetquot student Sarah Parker, JFK student Molly Zec and RCK student Reese Clark.

Also in attendance were teachers who participated in the quilt project – including Connetquot’s Wendy Frees, JFK’s Donna Marshall, RCK’s Francisca Tomasello, East Islip Middle School’s Dani Shehada and Dawn Ann Zeffiro, and middle school librarian Valerie Ware – as well as Vasquez, who was given the quilt as a final gift for his volunteerism.

School’s celebration, held in the Cafetorium on the morning of November 8th, beginning with a soulful rendition of “God Bless America” sung by Principal Aileen O’Rourke. The fourth- and fifth-grade chorus, directed

by James Santoro, sang “In Service of Our Country” and “Thank a Vet.” Other performances followed from first-graders (“Thank You, Soldiers”), third-graders (“It’s a Veteran Who Salutes the Flag”), fifth-graders (“Thank a Vet”) and JFK’s band, directed

by Ronald Fox, who played “Patriotic Bits & Pieces” by Michael Storey.

The final celebration that afternoon was at Connetquot Elementary, presented by the school’s fifth-graders, who spoke eloquently about the meaning of Veterans Day. Orchestra students directed by DeMaria played “America the Beautiful” and “Yankee Doodle,” while music and chorus teacher John Murphy led the students in several musical numbers, including his own arrangement of “The Fifty States Rap.” “We were all so proud of our performers and thankful that so many veterans attended,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “Our fifth-graders enthusiastically participated, dancing and singing while learning the true meaning of being grateful for the opportunity and privilege to meet our veterans and to live in this magnificent United States of America.”

Legislative Welcome

Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored former New York Jet Marty Lyons at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, on the occasion of his induction to the New Yorks Jets Ring of Honor. Mr. Lyons, one-fourth of the feared front four of the 1980’s Jet teams, known as the New York Sack Exchange was known for his hard work and ferocity on the field, but maybe is better known for his kindly and charitable ways off the

field.

While with the Jets, Mr. Lyons started the Marty Lyons Foundation, helping give wishes to terminally ill children between the ages of three and 17. It was because of this work with his foundation that Mr. Lyons won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Heisman Humanitarian Award.

This year, the Jets inducted Mr. Lyons into the New York Jets Ring of Honor at Metlife Stadium during a ceremony featuring past honorees, and former teammates of Mr. Lyons. “Besides being

a national champion at the University of Alabama, an 11-year veteran with the New York Jets, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, a successful businessman and broadcaster, it is Mr. Lyons ‘s work with the community right here in Suffolk County that is his biggest accomplishment,” said Legislator Kennedy.

Comedy Fundraiser

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children celebrated the opening of their third Medical Facility in Stony Brook with a successful comedy show fundraiser on November 14th at Farmingdale’s Colonial Springs Golf Course. The 7 p.m. evening event was hosted by “Laughter Saves Lives,” a comedy groupe inspired by their own struggles to

aid others in need. This spectacular fundraiser to benefit Angela’s House featured comedian’s Mike Keegan, Maria Walsh and headliner, Tom Daddario.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today announced a new partnership with GetCrashReports.com to provide online access to vehicular accident reports generated by Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs.

Most accident reports will now be available online within 72 hours of a crash, except for fatal crashes and accidents under investigation.

A $5.00 convenience fee will be charged when obtaining crash reports online.

Walk-in public records requests will still be accepted for the general public at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Police Records Section, located at 360 Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank NY 11980. Accident reports involving fatalities will only be available in person.

“It generally takes 7-10 days to process a standard request for an accident report and many people are eager to obtain this document to assist with insurance claims.
