n Saturday, October 26th, the Bay Shore Middle School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society held a Car Wash at Fifth Avenue School. The students raised $500 for the organization.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The rest of the money will be used to offset the cost of a field trip to Lincoln Center later in the year. Congratulations to all on a job well done.

Starting The Season

East Islip High School’s Cleary Secondary Program visited the local Shop & Stop on October 25th to collect food for the Cleary School for the Deaf food pantry, part of the students’ participation in “Make a Difference Day,” the largest day of community service in America. The students greeted patrons with flyers that explained their goal and offered donation suggestions.

The collection was a huge success, with community members giving both food and money.

“We met some generous people we recognized, including a parent of a student that attends Cleary Elementary School and a father of a student on the

East Islip football team – it truly is a small world,” said Cleary teacher Lisa Smith. “The warmth of the smiling faces helped us to brave the cold weather and warmed our hearts.”

In the next step of the food pantry program, Cleary students filled and decorated boxes of food to provide to local families in need, ready to be delivered in time for Thanksgiving Day. “The class enjoyed their community service experience,” said Smith.

“One of my students, Leanna Booker, asked if we could do something for the people of the Philippines.

That will be our next project.”

Recognizing the importance of cultivating intergenerational relationships, Islip Middle School Student Government members traveled to the Atria in Bay Shore, a senior assisted living facility, to connect with residents.

During the visit, 15 student government members were paired with senior citizens to discuss various topics.

Among these discussions, they shared experiences of growing up today versus

when the residents were younger.

“Our kids were so excited to meet with the seniors at the Atria and hear their stories,” said middle school social worker and student government coadviser Shari Pennington.

“We specifically chose a time close to Thanksgiving in order to give thanks to the seniors.” Added Atria Engage Life Director Kathleen O’Connor, “Today was a chance for our residents to see that their life experiences mean

something to the next generation and that they are appreciated.”

To prepare for their visits, the student government members created cards and memory boxes and presented the seniors with the gifts as a thank-you for sharing their stories.

“Today was a great day,” remarked eighth-grader Samantha Rossano. “I liked meeting my senior, Nick, and learning we both shared a love of reading.

It was nice to bond over that.”

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it.

Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.

Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun.

Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently.

Reading Night

Saint Patrick School in Bay Shore hosted Reading Night on November 14th for students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

Test Driving Careers

TREATS FOR FIDO - Recently, a group of Bay Shore teens gathered at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library to enjoy an afternoon making treats to benefit dogs and puppies at the Islip Town Animal Shelter. After measuring, mixing, kneading, rolling and cutting the treats into dog-friendly shapes, these caring teens took the treats home to bake. They returned with the product a few days later, when the treats were decorated and packaged into festive bags. Many thanks to these teenagers for working to help our canine friends.

More than 60 committed students and educators from East Islip High School’s three Career Academies joined with Sayville Ford to host EI’s fourth annual Drive 4 UR School fundraising event on November 9th.

Drive 4 UR School was developed as a fun and engaging way to help high schools raise money to support special programs.

For every person per household that test-drives one of the brand-new Ford vehicles on display, Ford Motor Company donates $20 to East Islip’s Career Academies. More than

250 parents, relatives and friends visited the school’s parking lot to support the cause and take a new car for a test drive.

The school’s collaboration with Sayville Ford was spearheaded this year by East Islip alumnus James DiGiovanna, the dealership’s event planner.

DiGiovanna began his internship at Sayville Ford during his senior year of high school, when he was a leader in East Islip’s Environment Green Career Academy program.

“All of the teachers in the Career Academy programs were delighted to take part

in this Saturday morning event, and many of the teachers from the district’s other buildings also joined us to help our Career Academy students raise funds for their educational field experiences,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the school’s director of careers and student services and head of the Career Academies. “On behalf of all the students and teachers that are part of the Career Academy, we thank everyone for their support and hope you will join us in our future ‘testdrives’ at East Islip High School.”

UNITY DAY PROGRAM - Several students from Bay Shore High School’s Holocaust Studies course participated in the Suffolk County Unity Day program at Suffolk County Community College. Focusing on “The Immigrant Experience,” the program included several guest speakers and a panel discussion. Among the presenters was Joselo Lucero, brother of the late Marcelo Lucero who was the victim of a tragic hate crime on Long Island. Bay Shore’s participation in the event was facilitated by Social Studies teacher Mrs. Adrienne Morpurgo. The students will incorporate their Unity Day experiences into Holocaust Studies’ overarching focus on tolerance.

Another year of mentoring began at East Islip High School with the Catch-a-Career Breakfast, held on Oct. 30 at the Irish Coffee Pub in East Islip. The event, sponsored by North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital, is the first in a three-part career exploration program at the school, developed by the East Islip/ Dowling School Business Partnership and coordinated by business education teacher Paul McHugh.

Catch-a-Career provides a forum in which students can discuss their career plans with business professionals in their career interest fields. “Our students can gain insight as to current trends and specific skills needed to successfully prepare for employment in that career field,” said McHugh.

Dressed in business attire, more than 105 ambitious students participated in this year’s breakfast, learning from more than 40 table facilitators representing fields such as medicine and health services, business, law and law enforcement, journalism and media, politics, education, environmental science and information technology. Keynote speaker Merri Ciano of the Long Island Senior Education Council discussed the importance of working through setbacks and giving back to others.

“This year’s student participation represented one of the largest groups we have ever had attend the Catcha-Career Breakfast,” said McHugh. “It is encouraging

At the breakfast, held on Nov. 21 in the high school’s library, more than 85 participating students met with specific mentors – in fields ranging from medicine, nursing and physical therapy to law, accounting, marine biology, set design, computer graphics and journalism – and learned how to network and make the most of their mentoring experience. Past mentors spoke of their experiences and the importance of getting an edge in the workplace.

“This program opens many doors for the students and provides that firsthand look at what their future might resemble,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, the coordinator of the Mentor Me program, now in its 11th year.

“The East Islip/Dowling School Business Partnership provides these and many other programs for students to reach out and explore their future career choices.”

In keeping with its mission of helping others, the CARE Club at Islip Middle School hosted its annual Thanksgiving food drive. “Representing compassion, attitude, respect and empathy, the goal of the CARE Club is to reach out and help the

community,” said adviser Mary Carroll.

With the assistance of the entire middle school community, the club donated more than 50 boxes filled with nonperishable food items to the Islip Methodist Church. Other activities scheduled for

the club include creating holiday cards to send to U.S. Marines currently serving in Afghanistan, hosting a collection for a local animal shelter and participating in the American Cancer Society’s Pennies for Patients program.

Colder temperatures, shorter days and the approaching holiday season can cause some people to experience bouts of sadness or depression. This may be due to Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as SAD. SAD is a depression that occurs each year at the same time, usually starting in fall or winter and ending in spring or early summer.

This mood disorder is often attributed to the shorter days and lack of sunlight during the colder months of the year. Between 10 and 20 percent of the U.S. population may suffer from mild symptoms associated with the disorder. Threequarters of those are women.

Young Frankenstein

This November, the knee-slapping comedy Young Frankenstein hit the Bay Shore High School stage.

An emulation of the original movie of the same name, the show follows the grandson of Victor Von Frankenstein, Frederick, (played by Bay Shore Senior James Vaughan), as he arrives in Transylvania after his grandfather’s death. It is there he encounters a variety of wacky characters, including Igor, Frederick’s

faithful hunchback (humorously played by Remy DeJoseph), the zany but hilarious assistant Inga (Lindsay Tierney), and, of course, the matron of Castle Frankenstein, Frau Blucher *insert thunder and horse whinny* (Erin McArdle).

This BSHS production of Young Frankenstein, comprised of a fabulous cast of students including Kordell Hammond, Isabella Danzi, Zander Pacella and Kyle Sourhada, was tremendously

entertaining, featuring rousing tap numbers and comedic dialogue throughout.

Red Ribbon Week

The annual drug awareness program known as Red Ribbon Week was recognized throughout the East Islip School District from October 21st-25th, culminating in visits to fifth-grade classrooms in all four of the district’s elementary schools by the East Islip High School Students Against Destructive Decisions Club.

“Red Ribbon Week is not only a great program for the elementary students who learn about the hazards of drugs, but it is also a

great program for the high school students as they learn to be positive role models and facilitators,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “It is wonderful to see the connection and enthusiasm of both the high school and elementary students.”

During the visits, SADD members presented short skits, role-playing what could happen if a student is approached and asked to try drugs, followed by question-and answer-sessions. In the program’s concluding Red

Ribbon contest segment, the fifth-graders were given the opportunity to design and create antidrug slogans, assisted by the older students.

One ribbon winner from each elementary school will receive a $25 gift certificate to Friendly’s and a memento. SADD will announce the contest winners at the East Islip Board of Education meeting on December 12th.

President’s Award Winner The Suffolk County Library Association presented Celia Ann Vollmer, a Brent- wood Public Library senior clerk, with their 2013 President’s Award at Villa Lombardi on Thursday, November 14th.

Ms. Vollmer is a dedicated library professional who served as an SCLA board member for eight years and treasurer for the past four years.

The President’s Award is given by the SCLA president to an individual who has gone above and beyond in the field of librarianship or passionate service to the association.

President Joanne Albano cited Ms. Vollmer’s leadership in dealing with the SCLA merger with the New York Library Association as a primary reason for choosing her as this year’s award recipient.

“Everyday was a new challenge for us and some days even brought us two, three and four chal- lenges, but being the person Celia is, every challenge was met head on and her professionalism never wavered,” stated Ms. Albano at the awards dinner.

In addition to Ms. Vollmer’s professional

dedication, she was also praised for her commitment to community service. She has served as an American Red Cross shelter operations manager at the Brentwood High School in recent disasters such as Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, disas- ter action team captain for a Hempstead apartment fire in 2012, and a responder to a recent Brentwood warehouse fire.

The Brentwood PTA, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Pronto Long Island have also been beneficiaries of her PRESIDENT’S AWARD WINNER - Brentwood Public Library Assistant Direc- tor volunteer work.

Art teacher Daniel Figliozzi’s Set Design students provided the backdrop for the actors to emote. “Mr. Figliozzi’s class did an amazing job on creating a realistic ‘onstage/offstage’ set for ‘Anne-Arky,’ and they brought the beach scene to life in ‘Swimming With Sins’ with colorful beachy props,” said Affelt. Also helping out backstage were senior Jennifer Coffin on the soundboard and juniors Thomas DiOrio and Matthew Spatola, who served respectively as stage manager and assistant stage manager.

“It was exciting to see our students share their talents and enthusiasm with the community, playing before a packed house at the high school,” said Board of Education trustee Glenn Reed. “All of the students involved worked extremely hard to put together an evening that was fun, funny and refreshing for all,” added Affelt.

“Price’s quirky, offbeat humor was brought to life by these six talented student actors and the audiences were very responsive to their efforts,” said East Islip’s choral director, Bethany Affelt, who led the production.

The second comedy, “Anne-Arky,” provided a backstage look at a group of high school-aged students and their teacher/ stage manager on the opening night of a musical version of “Anne of Green Gables.” The audience experienced the trials and tribulations of putting on a high school show as the teacher, Mr. O’Neill (played by junior Andrew Sciallo) bemoaned, “Why does everything have to happen on opening night?” Cast romances going awry, flashlight batteries dying, scripts accidentally lit on fire, ankles getting broken, lines being forgotten and wigs being knocked off – all were there in this hysterical farce. The performances of East Islip’s student actors (freshman Vinny Altman; sophomores Laura Coffin and Meg Tohill; juniors Joseph Janover, Peter McDermott,
