Classic, Jazz, Rock and Theatre Presentations Promise to Warm Up the Winter in Style Our 2014 season marks 14 years of presenting entertainment for Long Islanders at the Dix Hills Preforming Arts Center. We look back over the past with a deep sense of accomplishment for our steadily growing audiences who now enjoy year-round, high-quality shows at DHPAC. “A Peter, Paul and Mary Tribute with A Band Called Honalee” produced by Broadway’s Aaron Gandy. Tickets are $20.

“A Tribute to Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine with Conga.” Audiences will thrill to sounds of this tribute band, featuring an evening of big-band, Latin and Pop songs. Tickets are $20-$35.

“Giada Valenti in The Love Returns.” The world-famous entertainer will perform Italian nnd pop hits from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Tickets are $20-$35.

New Transit Service Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone held a press conference to announce the commencement of year-round Sunday bus service on ten bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014.

“Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family

or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone.

“I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. We started with the East End, providing Sunday bus service on two routes and now we are rolling out service to eight additional bus routes.”

“We must do everything we can to improve our transit infrastructure and provide options for our residents to travel throughout Suffolk County, said County Executive Bellone. “Investments in our infrastructure serve as economic development initiatives which will help to grow our economy and provide for a sustainable economic future.”

“This expansion of service is the single largest increase in service in the history of Suffolk County

Transit,” said John Corrado, President of Suffolk Transportation Services. “I am pleased to be a partner with Suffolk County and continue to look forward to opportunities where we can provide our riders with enhanced services and improved communications.

Suffolk Bus is also providing service for the Suffolk County Accessible Transportation para-transit riders and those who are hearing or sight impaired.

people with disabilities live independently and enjoy the opportunities our communities have to offer,” said Joe Delgado, Executive Director of Suffolk Independent Living Organization.

ENJOYING THE FIVE SENSES - On Wednesday, October 30th, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School kindergarten students joined teachers and volunteer parents, for a morning of activities designed around the five senses. Kindergarten teachers divided the youngsters into groups to work with the volunteer parents in the classrooms.

A variety of exercises, had the students rotate from one group to another, to enjoy activities to enhance their senses of sight, taste, touch, smell and sound. Students could be heard giggling with excitement as they traveled between the classrooms, interacting with their classmates, parents and teachers.

HELPING A FAMILY IN NEED - The personal trainer students in Jonathan Audiino’s class at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Technical Center went above and beyond to collect donations of toys, clothes and gift cards for Dawn Bosque and her family. Ms. Bosque’s home and belongings were destroyed in a recent house fire, which badly injured her father. Ms. Bosque and her two sons, Jayden and Ryan, visited Mr. Audiino’s classroom on Thursday, December 19th, to thank everyone for their hard work and generosity.

Stuff-A-Boat Success Sea Tow is proud to announce that the “StuffA-Boat” donation drive for the 2013 holiday season was a huge success.

Sponsored nationally

by Sea Tow Services International, the nation’s leading marine assistance service provider, and hosted by Sea Tow operators across the country, the campaign’s goal is to provide those less fortunate in local communities with some badly needed assistance and cheer during the 2013 holiday season.

The Southold “Stuff a Boat” donation drive hosted by Sea Tow Services International, Inc., took place December 7th through 14th. All collected donations benefited CAST

(Community Action of Southold Town) as well as NFAWL (the North Fork Animal Welfare League) and were delivered on Tuesday, December 17th despite the snow. Sea Tow International employees gathered in the morning and stuffed the Sea Tow Twin-Vee boat that had been servicing Montauk boaters this past summer with all the donations.

Students from Mattituck High School as well as Southold Pack 6 Cub Scouts volunteered to be at Sea Tow International headquarters and collect donations. Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout volunteers, and another raffle for the Southold and Mattituck/Cutchogue Elementary Schools

students who made donations. The Webelos 1 den won the Scout raffle, and Aiden Russell, a 5th grader from Southold Elementary, won the school raffle.

“The ‘Stuff a Boat’ campaign is our way of giving back to Southold and to other local communities nationwide,” said Capt.

Pollert worked for 27 years for the Suffolk County Legislature’s Budget Review Office, serving as Director, six years as Deputy County Executive for Finance under County Executive Steve Levy and two years as Vice President for Administration for the Long Island Power Authority. For the past two years he has served as Deputy County Executive for Finance and Management under

County Executive Bellone, returning to County service in order to work with County Executive Bellone on fiscally responsible items to put Suffolk County back onto strong fiscal footing without piercing the tax cap.

The award was created during the administration of County Executive John Klein and designed by then Chief Deputy County Executive Arthur Bergmann. It was first presented in 1973 and over the past 40 years, it has only been presented to 17 individuals. The first was presented to H. Lee Dennison, who served as Suffolk’s first County Executive.

On Thursday December 26th at 3:21 p.m., Suffolk County EMS First Responder, Christine Hogan, answered a 911 emergency call for active maternity help.

Christine’s over the phone instructions would prove vital in successfully bringing a bouncing baby girl into this world.

As delivery became eminent, Christine began to provide postdispatch and pre-arrival instructions which included clearing the infant’s airway and tying off the umbilical cord.

Christine answered the call with one patient,

and quickly found herself with two. She smoothly transitioned to a multiple patient scenario while maintaining a professional demeanor throughout the entire call.

“Christine provided care for a Suffolk County resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,” said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a

The Last Lull

The Long Island Community Foundation has awarded a $30,000 grant to Suffolk County United Veterans to help launch 24-hour, peersupported Crisis Respite and support services program for Veterans who are experiencing risk symptoms such as those associated with mental health challenges of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury.

The Crisis Respite program will operate at the newly-named John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank and will provide a safe milieu for Veterans experiencing distress.

Such a respite can, where

indicated, be instead of psychiatric hospitalization and can help bolster a connection or a plan for more aggressive peer support and professional intervention. The new program is intended to partner with the Pfc. Joseph Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project as well as the outreach work of the Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) project, and SCUV’s ongoing homeless intervention work.

Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood.

Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem.

We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can.

Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

HEALTH CARE CONTRIBUTION - Premm Learning Center staff and students raised $500 to donate to the Good Samaritan Health Care Foundation in West Islip.

Using pink paper cutout links with individual messages and names on them, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES school in Oakdale showed its support to those fighting breast cancer by contributing to the foundation. Each link represents a $1 donation. The links were attached and strung through the hallway as a symbol of accomplishment and for breast cancer awareness. The funds are designated for services that include genetic counseling and transportation vouchers so patients can get to treatment facilities.

Alumni Basketball Connetquot High School boys basketball coach Bob Drzal brought together alumni members of the of the program’s ‘Golden Years’ on December 28th. Thirty former ‘Thunderbirds’ representing six decades beginning in 1966, met at the Connetquot HS Fieldhouse for the 3rd annual Alumni Classic.

Drzal, along with long-time assistant coaches Ralph Thomas and Keith Cussmano, brought back former student-athletes who expected to relive their high school playing days, but really wanted to catch up with former teammates and coaches. Despite the graying hair, expanding waistlines, and reluctant leg muscles, the 2013 Alumni Basketball players entertained their loud, and loving, fans with (semi) aggressive defense, long jump shots and somewhat sharp passes. The only ingredient that seemed to be missing were cheerleaders, but hopefully their alumni cheerleaders will take part next year!

The supportive crowd of moms, dads, wives, children and significant others, cheered their ‘boys’ on, and enjoyed a laugh or two as a few shots fell short of the

rim, or rebounders came up with the ball while standing 1992 team had been selected the ‘Team of the Decade’, flat-footed! The game was actually exciting as time ran and that the team photo would be prominently displayed down, with 2004 graduate Jason Pristupa being fouled as on the program’s Wall of Fame! time ran out, and his team down two! Prestupa stepped Following the game, handshakes and hugs all around, players made plans to meet up at Cavanagh’s Restaurant in Bayport to finish catching up with their old teammates.

As the regularly scheduled football season came to an end, the Connetquot School District middle school coaches shared their appreciation with their players and fans, then focused on the last game of the season. They would all look forward to the newly revived cross-district football game between the T-birds of Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS), and the T-Birds of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS), to be played for the first time ‘under the lights’ at Connetquot High School! Connetquot Athletic Director Mark Dellecave and Connetquot Board of Education Trustee Ted Imbasciani were on hand for this highly anticipated game.

On Thursday, November 7th, RMS Coaches Pope & Bradley along with OBMS Coaches Oldis & Burger met on the beautifully maintained varsity football field at Connetquot High School in Bohemia. The coaches, and loyal, vocal fans, joined the cheerleaders in encouraging the T-birds to play their best, and demonstrate their community pride.

Connetquot High School Varsity Football Coach Mike Hansen gathered both teams together prior to the opening kickoff to congratulate them on their respective seasons, and encourage them to play their best against many of the same boys who will be their teammates as 9th graders next season. At a

distance, fans could hear the coach encourage the players to hit hard, then help their opponents up, then go back to hitting hard again. This would be the first cross-district game to be played on the new artificial turf field.

While RMS scored the first points of the game, it would be OBMS that would come out with the final winning score. Despite the outcome, the T-Birds gave their best effort, did hit hard, and at the end of the game lined up to shake hands and congratulate one another in a spirit of mutual respect. The fans and coaches enjoyed watching their boys play hard, make them proud, and provide a sense of optimism for the future of Connetquot football.

Eligibility is any January 2014 or June 2014 graduating senior who is planning to attend college.

The deadline for filing is April 23rd, 2014.

UNDEFEATED - Congratulations to the Long Island Wicked Fastpitch Softball Team on an undefeated fall season. The girls went 10-0 while scoring 109 runs and giving up only 36. The team is made up of girls ages 16 & 17 from West Babylon, North Babylon, West Islip, Sayville, West Islip, East Islip and Lindenhurst. The girls are: Kathryn Kamalic, Emily DiSanza, Alexa Lucchesse, Katelyn Casey, Breanna Kuhner, Marissa DeMartino, Taylor Schadecker-Tallon, Carolyn Armstrong, Kristen Bricker, Gabrielle Hendrix, Noelle Roth and Sarah Schick.
