Back In The Swing

As school is now in full swing, it is time for many high school seniors to shift their minds into gear; college gear that is. Now is the most crucial point in any high schoolers career.

Essays should be close to finalized, the Common App should be filled out, standardized testing should be in order and a list of schools should be in hand. If you are a little behind in this process, do not fret.

The college process is truly daunting, but you have an “ace up your sleeve.” Your guidance counselor is a trained expert and is there to simply guide you. Take advantage of them!

Getting into a great

university is the culmination of your work this far. This means that it is what you have been working for since day one.

If you have someone that is well versed in something you are not, it just makes sense to sit down and talk with them.

They can pass valuable insight to you that would have otherwise gone unknown. Your guidance counselor is also given the task of writing a recommendation letter for you, so the more interaction you have, the better.

You undoubtably want to stand out in the mind of your counselor so he or she feels compelled to write a unique essay.

Tell your guidance counselor about your extracurricular activities, hopes and goals. Tell them anything that you think sets you apart from the crowd.

Feel free to ask them whatever questions you have because it’s what they are paid to do.

Choosing a college will certainly be the biggest decision you’ve made this far, so it goes without saying to proceed with both caution and ferocity.

Make the most out of your final year of high school, make the most out of your application and don’t forget to make the most out of your guidance counselor.

It is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. If something needs to be replaced because it is damaged or mildewcovered, then covering it up is only hiding the problem and asking for more work in the long run.

Scale Back On Materials One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost.

When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Paint Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Tips For Tree Maintenance

Prep Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project.

But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin.

• Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint.

In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

• Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a

new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

• Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

• Prepare your paint.

Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl,

and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

• Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree.

Awareness Efforts Launched The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County (MHAS), Clubhouse of Suffolk, and Suffolk County United Veterans are pleased to announce a local campaign to bring greater awareness about mental illness to our community.

Stigma is commonly cited as a major reason why someone suffering from a mental health disorder

does not seek help. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a national campaign established by Congress in 1990 and held the first full week of October. For the past 20 years, Mental Illness Awareness Day has been held in Suffolk County during the National Mental Illness Awareness Week, with the goal of reducing stigma and promoting understanding

through an educational and motivational conference for people with lived experience in the mental health system, their families and friends, service providers, students and the community.

Colleen Merlo, Associate Executive Director of MHA explains this year’s effort “For twenty years, we have held a very impressive event during the Week,

with nationally recognized speakers, but this year we wanted to have a more grassroots effort and involve more partners in order to have a broader impact.

With schools, libraries, faith based groups, civic associations, as well as mental health organizations; we are truly brining awareness to our community”.

The mission of SJC Working For You is to establish relationships with local corporations while creating partnership opportunities between these businesses and the SJC faculty and administration. This event will assist companies looking to recruit students for internships and full- and part-time jobs, and, in turn, help SJC students gain experience in their fields of study or financial support for their education.

County Executive Steve Bellone announced that the Suffolk County Inventors and Entrepreneurs Club will feature Anil Dhundale, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Long Island High Technology Incubator (LIHTI) and Clean Energy Business Incubator Program (CEBIP). Dr. Dhundale will give an overview of the economic development programs at Stony Brook University (SBU) and a preview of the new START-UP NY program: http://www.

Before joining the University, he gained experience working at a biotechnology company in a start-up diagnostics

Multiple calendar hurdles, lower than normal donor turnout, plus high demand from area hospitals, have reduced our community blood supply to critical levels – notably less than a one-day supply of O-negative “universal donor” blood, which can be transfused into anyone in trauma situations when there is no time for blood typing. In addition, types B-negative and A-negative are also very low.

“Our 200 hospital partners have been great about working with us to manage the tight supplies following the holidays,” said New York Blood Center (NYBC) Vice President Rob Purvis. “But, when patients need blood,

they need blood, and our hospitals have requested more than our community has been able to supply over Labor Day and last week’s holidays.” On top of that, many schools, which provide at least a quarter of the blood supply, have late starts this year.

To make up for the shortfall as quickly as possible, NYBC has a wide variety of donor centers and blood drives open this week.

But blood and blood products can’t be manufactured. They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to attend a blood drive or visit a donor center.

Any company, community organization, place of worship, or individual may host a blood drive. Blood donors receive free minimedical exams on site including information about their temperature, blood pressure and hematocrit level.

Winterizing Your Lawn Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead.

Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season.

• Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort.

Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead

spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers.

Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well.

Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives.

so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold.

• Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil.

• Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long.

• Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to re-edge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring.

• Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services.

• Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.

Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.

forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do.

Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is

Suffolk Inventors Meeting

While stationed in Western Afghanistan in 2012, Staff Sgt. Edwin Caba of Long Beach, NY; Sgt. Alex Rotondi of Syracuse, NY; Sgt. Travis Burton of Cincinnati, OH; Sgt. Kevin Singer of Freeport, NY; Capt. Clinton Green of Staten Island, NY; and 1st Lt. Joseph Lapenta of Staten Island, NY grew to care for a stray dog that started following their unit around. She soon began to go on missions with them and protect them from other wild dogs in the area.

They named her “Sheba,” Hebrew for “promise.”

From then on, the soldiers made a promise to Sheba to always keep her safe.

On March 23rd, Sheba gave birth to seven puppies.

Cadence, Rocky, Sarah, Jack, Buckeye, Breezy and Harris were dubbed “The Magnificent Seven.” The soldiers and their medic

cared for both Sheba and all seven puppies to ensure their survival.

Once the soldiers returned home, they could not bear to think of Sheba and her pups still in Afghanistan. To that end, they reached out to Save-APet Founder/President and Guardians of Rescue Vice President, Dori Scofield, who was able to help get all the dogs safely to America via Guardians of Rescue’s “Paws of War – No Buddy Left Behind” program.

Once Ms. Scofield was notified the base would be closing, she contacted Nowzad Dogs, another nonprofit organization that rescues stray and abandoned animals in Afghanistan. In mid-June, a mission was implemented that allowed Sheba and all seven of her pups to arrive safely at Nowzad’s shelter in Kabul.

Through a FundRazr. com campaign set up

by Ms. Scofield, SaveA-Pet and Guardians of Rescue were able to raise more than $15,000 for the dogs’ transport to the United States. Slightly short of their goal, the campaign is still running, yet the organizations pooled additional funds and donations to get the dogs to the United States on September 4th for a heartfelt reunion between five soldiers and eight dogs — all of whom have gone home with soldiers. Sheba is currently being assessed to see if she would make a good companion service dog for a veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

New Sidewalks Unveiled

School In Session Not even scattered showers could dampen the spirits of students in the Fire Island School District when they eagerly returned to school on September 3rd.

With backpacks filled with new school supplies, they boarded familiar

yellow buses and arrived at Woodhull Elementary School.

After being greeted by teachers and administrators, the students were escorted to their classrooms, where they settled in for a new school year.

Students were reminded

of key bus safety items when they participated in a bus drill on the second day of school. They went over the proper behavior to exhibit while traveling to and from school and practiced the correct way to evacuate a school bus in the case of an emergency.

On Thursday, August 29th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert stopped at the site of the newly constructed sidewalks along Station Road in Bellport.

The sidewalks extend a little over half a mile along the west side of Station Road from Beaver SCHOOL IN SESSION - Woodhull Elementary School students participated in a Dam Road to Head of the bus drill on the second day of school.

were paid for using a $165,504.25 Caithness Grant from Bellport and North Bellport as a part of the Caithness Community Benefit Package negotiated

by Councilwoman Kepert.

The Bellport community decided to use a portion of their grant funds to construct the sidewalks in order to provide a safe avenue for pedestrians

to travel from the train station to the Village.

“I am extraordinarily pleased that this project is nearing completion,” said Councilwoman Kepert. “I am a strong advocate for both pedestrian and bicycle safe streets in the Town of Brookhaven. This sidewalk makes Station Road a safe place for pedestrians to travel.”

Sandy Relief Still Available

The Islip Town Department of Economic Development has announced that the first Sandy-impacted small businesses have been approved for assistance grants, which come from New York State’s Small Business Storm Recovery Program.

Through this program, small businesses are eligible for grants of up to $50,000 or more depending on the extent of a business’s storm-related losses. The grants are designed to help replace machinery, inventory, furniture and fixtures, and other physical resources that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

“In the immediate

aftermath of Hurricane Sandy our Economic Development department established a point of contact between local businesses and the agencies that could aid the recovery process,” said Councilman John Cochrane, liaison to the department. “I urge every business that suffered losses as a result of the storm to contact us and see what programs might be available to help in the recovery.”

The application process is steered by local Small Business Development Centers, who offer free assistance and guidance through every stage of the grant approval process.

Businesses that do not qualify for outright grants

may still be eligible for low-interest loans.

New Year Begins

High Honors For School For the second consecutive year, Bayport-Blue Point High School has been named a Reward School by the New York State Education Department.

The school was granted this honor based upon its academic achievements – namely, its students’ high performance on state assessments, graduation rates and overall academic

progress.

“This honor is a true reflection of the hard work of our students, faculty and staff,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “I am proud to have our high school once again spotlighted in this manner and applaud the daily efforts of our educators, the support of our community and the leadership of [then high school principal] Dr.

Timothy Hearney.”

According to NYSED, 249 schools in 163 districts were named Reward Schools. The designees were noted as those schools that have made the most progress or that have the highest achievement in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement that are not being closed.

Bayport-Blue Point School District students were welcomed back to school by faculty and staff on September 9th, when school doors opened to mark the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.

Dressed in new school clothes and carrying backpacks filled with new school supplies, the

students marched into the school buildings geared up for the year ahead.

For some students, this was their first experience in primary school, while for others it was their last in secondary school.

The kindergartners, saying goodbye to their parents for the first time, were slightly apprehensive

about what they were to experience, while the high school seniors were excited to be back in school and reunited with old friends in familiar settings.

The year ahead is sure to be filled with many new and exciting experiences for all students throughout the district.

Hospice Care Network seeks NY State Licensed Massage Therapists to volunteer their time to provide therapeutic massages for people facing life limiting illnesses. Our clients benefit greatly from massage therapy for symptom control as well as for emotional and spiritual comfort. General and job

specific orientation will be provided in addition to ongoing support and mentorship.

They are looking for volunteers to provide weekly three hour shifts at one of three inpatient units. Our inpatient units are located at: Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream; The Hospice Suites at

Harborside in Manhasset; and the Hospice Inn in Melville.

Bradstock featured the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock, and jazz. Nature Center Reopens The South Shore Nature Center celebrated the beginning of a new chapter today, at a special ceremony held at its facility located on Bayview Avenue in East Islip, where the doors to the Nature Center were officially reopened to the public for the first time since late 2012, and the building rededicated as the Orr Wildlife Learning Center (OWLC), in honor of the Orr Family who donated the house and land to the Town in 1975.

Islip Town Board Members Anthony Senft, Jr., Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Steve Flotteron, and Town Clerk Olga Murray and Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, were joined by Seatuck officials, state and county officials, and community members in celebrating the much-anticipated event that resurrected an invaluable educational resource.

Owned and operated by the Town since 1977, the SSNC’s education center was forced to close earlier this year due to substantial financial strains in Town government. But thanks to the hard work and commitment of Council Members Anthony Senft, Jr. and Trish Bergin Weichbrodt in seeking out a partnership with the environmental nonprofit organization Seatuck Environmental Association to manage the site, nature enthusiasts of all ages will again have the opportunity to enjoy the facility and the wide variety of programs that will be administered there.

“The Town Board acted responsibly when deciding the future of the SSNC, and by working together with the community, we were able to come up with a solution that made sense for everyone involved. Our public/private partnership with Seatuck enables us to preserve one of

Islip’s greatest natural resources,” noted Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “The cooperative effort between the Town and Seatuck allows the SSNC to continue to exist as a lasting legacy of Islip’s natural history and wildlife preservation and one that put no financial burden on our taxpayers.”

Under the agreement, which was authorized in May, Seatuck will oversee the daily operations at SSCN, including programming and property maintenance, for

three years. “For more than three decades, the SSNC has been a vital sanctuary for wildlife and an invaluable educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Islip,” said Enrico Nardon, Seatuck Executive Director.

“The partnership with Islip Town ensures that the facility will continue to serve these important roles for many years to come, and helps us to enhance the number and kinds of programs that Seatuck can offer to the public, including our brand new Little Peepers program, Suffolk County’s first nature-based preschool program which kicked off earlier this week. ” The SSNC is a 200-acre preserve that stretches all the way to the shores of the Great South Bay, and consists of mature upland forests, freshwater wetlands and a vast salt marsh. It also boasts an extensive network of trails and a boardwalk that afford visitors miles of access to the property’s beauty and ecological diversity. An Open House is planned at SSNC on Sunday, September 15th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring a full schedule of nature programs, as well as crafts, games and other activities for the whole family. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy.

Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result.

Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come.

• Treat trouble spots.

Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH

levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments.

Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier.

• Aerate the property.

Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul.

Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle

the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration.

• Take steps to strengthen the roots.

Aerating promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property.

• Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can

For each of the next three years, 50 fortunate Stony Brook students will be eligible to take advantage of the AmeriCorps Education Award, which enables them to receive a $1,175 scholarship. In return they must complete 300 hours of service work for local nonprofit organizations addressing unmet health community needs in disease prevention, health promotion and hunger initiatives.

The Career Center offers the program, which is a federally funded threeyear grant with support from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Students may use the scholarship to pay for education costs at any college, university, or approved post-secondary institution or school-towork program. A voucher may also be applied to pay back qualified student loans already incurred by the students.

Girl Scout Day For the fifth year in a row, the Long Island Game Farm is hosting its annual Girl Scout Day for the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County on September 21st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a rain-or-shine event.
