learned first-hand how K-9 dogs are used by the police.

They visited the different schools of training at the academy such as radar school, aviation, and emergency service. The Crime Scene Unit was especially interesting to those students who are looking for a career in forensics.

Sitting shot gun with a police officer, students learned how to apprehend an assailant which includes cuffing the “perp” while protecting themselves.

There was so much to learn.

Before picking up a gun at the shooting range, the students had to don protective gear, and receive basic gun training.

Could the students get a bull’s eye like several of the police officers training them?

Practice makes perfect.

The obstacle course was probably the most physically draining. These police academy youths had to run an obstacle course that concluded with practicing catching

an assailant. They hurdled and crawled over and under obstacles, dragged a real person down a hall, gave them CPR, then shot at a target, found the assailant, subdued and cuffed them.

The scene was something you would see on an action-packed police show.

The police mission and what is taught at the youth police academy is to preserve the public peace, prevent crime, detect and arrest offenders, protect the rights of persons and property, and enforce all laws and ordinances. The graduates were clear that the skills and knowledge they learned related to real-life police work.

The program is offered to students enrolled in the Law Enforcement Programs at ESBOCES and is well suited for those who are interested in furthering their career in criminal justice.

The experience is

designed to operate like an actual police academy including classroom and physical training specifically designed for BOCES students.

Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time.

For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you.

And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never

worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch.

The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems.

But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes.

I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You

didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag?

I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint.

Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask.

If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything?

Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

year alone, the Children’s Center has been a safe, and comforting, place for over 1,100 youngsters to spend time while their parents are in court.

Books and supplies are collected, and donated, by members of the CTA throughout the year.

Teachers from the 11 schools within the district provide books, small toys, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the children who spend time at the center.

The CTA has also provided hundreds of hats, scarves and gloves, along with the books and supplies. Mrs. Meyer explained that when children leave for the day, they are given a new book of their own to take home, as well as hats, gloves and scarves in the winter season.

As Felicio was introduced by Advisory co-Chair Cheryl Zimmer he said that “… it’s always a pleasure to attend the Bagel & Books Breakfast and hear about the wonderful work they do, and the effect they have on the children they work with. It is gratifying for the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association to be a small part of the program’s success. I will pass along to our members that their unofficial ‘adoption’ of the Children’s Center is greatly appreciated by the staff, and fellow supporters.”

The CTA has pledged its continued support for the youngsters that need the resources we can provide.

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., and the organization’s scholarship committee, welcomed six students and their families to the May 21st Scholarship Presentation Reception.

Held in the high school library Felicio welcomed the students, their parents, and the “… Connetquot teachers who made a difference”, in the students’ lives..

120 essays were submitted with the title: The Teacher Who Made a Difference in my Life.

The essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as the middle and elementary schools. Essays submitted by the following Connetquot students were selected as the six winning entries: Michael Caputo (Mrs. Patricia Culp), Brianna Gianni (Mr. Mauricio Arias), Kyle Brennan (Mr. John Hargrave), Asha Antony (Mr. Alan Fertmann), Shouik Dutta (Mr. Brian

Majeski) and Alyssa Meano (Meghan Andersen).

Each of the six selected students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500 to help cover college expenses.

Felicio said “On behalf of the Connetquot Teachers Association I congratulate the students who are being presented with these financial awards. I thank the parents for their support of education, and a special congratulations to all the teachers who were singled out by the students, as well as those here tonight, with the essay winners. Being part of this special event reemphasizes the positive impact we, as teachers, have on our students. It makes me proud to be called a teacher.”

Besides providing financial grants to graduating seniors, the Connetquot Teachers Association provides financial support to local boys’ and girls’ sports teams, supports the annual ‘Every Child’s Dream’ dinner, and the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. As a result of this year’s destructive winter weather the CTA worked to assist residents of the community with food, water and other necessities, as well as providing financial support. The New York State United Teachers Association recently presented the CTA with the prestigious NYSUT Community Service Award in recognition of the organization’s commitment to the community.

Americana Fair The Islip Town Department of Parks and Recreation is currently preparing for the Town’s Annual Americana Fair, to be held on Saturday, June 8th at the Islip Grange, in Sayville. The fair, which will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., features craft vendors, a farmer’s

market, live entertainment, and petting zoos.

Also, this year the Town is teaming-up with Idol Maker, USA and WALK 97.5 Radio to kick-off a “Stars of Tomorrow” Talent Show, which will be part of a series of singing competitions running throughout the summer.

On May 22nd, Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., packed several shopping bags with brand new children’s books, and stopped by the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was again invited to attend the Children’s Center Bagel & Books Breakfast along with other childrens’ advocates who have partnered with the Education and Assistance Corporation (EAC).

The EAC operates the Children’s Center which provides a safe area for youngsters while families are involved in court proceedings. The center is open 5 days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Wendy Meyer. This

Taking the Hippocratic Oath for the first time as physicians, Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s Class of 2013 will launch their careers in medicine and begin residency training at institutions such as Columbia, Yale, Cornell, Duke, and Stony Brook Medicine in July. A packed house filled the Staller Center at Stony Brook University during the School’s 39th Convocation Ceremony to congratulate the 130 graduates – the largest graduating class to date.

Collectively, the Class of 2013 will begin their journeys in medicine in one of 21 specialty residency programs, such as Internal Medicine, Neurology and Emergency Medicine. Nearly onethird of the class (42) will train in primary care disciplines, helping to meet the estimated need for 15,000 new primary care providers over the next five years, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Fifty-five percent matched to residencies in New York State, and 26 percent will stay on Long Island for their residency training.

Thirteen graduates will stay at Stony Brook for residency training in specialties such as Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Surgery and Anesthesiology.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Longwood School District wrestling champion Corey (Shakur) Rasheed at the Longwood Board of Education meeting held on Thursday, May 23rd. Corey placed first in his weight class at the National High School Wrestling Championships which were held this past April.

“As a student athlete, Corey has demonstrated his dedication to achieving his goals,” said Legislator Anker. “His dedication and talent is admirable, and will serve as an inspiration for younger athletes in his community.”

Corey placed first at the 24th Annual National High School Wrestling Championships in the 152 lb. weight class. The

national championship win followed his state championship victory in mid-February. In the past, Corey has placed in the State Finals three times, but this year was his first time as a titleholder. Those who know Corey boast about his immeasurable drive and ability that he will carry with him into his senior wrestling season and beyond.

Power To Learn

On May 29th, Supervisor Ed Romaine participated in Cablevision’s Power To Learn teaching program event held in the auditorium at the Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School. The Supervisor addressed 7th grade Social Studies students, speaking about his role in local government and encouraging them to get involved with their communities. He also fielded questions from

the students on a variety of subjects including the environment, recycling and the war on drugs.

“As a former teacher myself, I was happy to spend time with the students,” said Supervisor Romaine.

“Their projects were well researched and they asked some very good questions, which showed how well they understand the way government works. I thank Cablevision for giving me the opportunity to be part of this very worthwhile

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inducted 19 Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from the Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead.

Prom Salon Held

A beautiful selection of brand new and gently used dresses, shoes, handbags, and other merchandise were available at the Prom Salon held at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead earlier this month.

The Prom Salon was the brainchild of the Adult Cosmetology Program students and their teacher Dorothea LoBiondo.

Word got out that they were asking for gowns, shoes, purses, and jewelry donations. Ms. LoBiondo

said, “It seemed like every day more items were being delivered to my classroom.

It was great.”

Over the course of the school year, the cosmetology students participate in a myriad of community services to elevate their skills and obtain needed hours to satisfy their New York State 1,000-hour requirement to take the licensing examination.

Ms. LoBiondo was pleased to share, “We had more than fifty young ladies come and try on gowns.”

The prom can be an expensive endeavor but some girls feel it is a monumental moment in their teen years. Ms. LoBiondo said, “We want to give girls the opportunity to join their peers and take the stress out of what should be a fun night.”

High school girls have the opportunity to come back to the Riverhead campus of ESBOCES and get their hair, nails, and makeup done for their prom. All salon services are being donated by the Adult Education Cosmetology Program.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Town of Brookhaven’s Senior May Rally on Friday, May 17th at the West Lake Inn in Patchogue. Entertainment, vendor exhibits, and a luncheon were enjoyed by over 100 seniors.

Legislator Anker. “They provide guidance to our younger generations. As the Vice Chairwoman of Suffolk County’s Senior Committee, I will work to preserve the way of life our seniors cherish and advocate on behalf of their needs.”

The Town of Brookhaven’s Senior Citizen Division works

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches.

Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be

displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th.

Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed in the Art Museum, along with the Coney Island and Jones Beach exhibition from September 12th through 29th. The reception is free and open to the public.

Kites For A Cure

The skies above Coopers Beach in Southampton may have been filled with clouds this Saturday, but they were also filled with hope! Long Island residents gathered at Coopers Beach once again as Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) hosted its 7th Annual Kites For A Cure, on Saturday, May 25th, raising more than $50,000 for lung cancer research. From 4 to 6 p.m., participants braved the wind and rain to gather at the beach and kick-start the summer season in the Hamptons.

Mayor Epley served as the Honorary Commodore, memorializing his father, who lost his own battle with lung cancer nine years ago. New York State Senator Lee Zeldin and his family also joined the Mayor at Coopers Beach for a fun afternoon of kiteflying.

In addition to the kites flying at the event, Kites For A Cure also brings kites to fly in the windows of most merchants in the Village of Southampton.

Thanks to support from the Southampton Chamber of Commerce and local schools, most stores feature beautifully painted kites in their windows to show their care for the cause and the community.

At the event itself, with sponsorship from Rechler Equity Partners and The Hampton Business District at Gabreski, funds raised

at the 7th Annual Kites For A Cure will go directly to UALC’s national lung cancer research grant program. Refreshments by Tate’s Bake Shop and Hint water, and music provided

by WEHM radio station kept the crowd at highenergy.

“The wind and rain could not dampen our spirits this Memorial Day Weekend. We are so happy to be a part of this community and work together toward a cure for lung cancer,” said Gregg Rechler, managing partner of Rechler Equity Partners, who lost his father, Roger, to lung cancer. “We are grateful to the Village of Southampton, the Southampton Chamber of Commerce and the many local businesses who support this event year after year,” added Linda Wenger, Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s Executive Director.

For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment.

What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking.

Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment.

From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment.

But it isn’t all bad.

These children quickly learn the value of money.

It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner.

For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming.

The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me.

While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for

rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money.

Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work!

On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
