n July 15th, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine joined members of the Tidal W.A.V.E. Youth Leadership Association for the Stepping On A Stigma Walk-athon at Diamond In The Pines Park in Coram. The event was aimed at spreading awareness and education regarding those in the mental health community and to “stand up, step on and stomp out stigma.” Joining the Supervisor was Scott Martella, representing Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

2-1-1 Long Island, a partnership between Middle Country Public Library and United Way of Long Island. 2-1-1 is a free, non-emergency information and referral service that connects Long Island residents to health and human services they may need on a daily basis or during a disaster.

Available by telephone and online at www.211longisland.org since 2010, 2-1-1 Long Island has provided over 30,000 callers and over 500,000 web visitors with detailed information on over 10,000 community resources for help and assistance in a myriad of areas – from basic daily needs such as food, heat and shelter – to job training, financial services, child and/or elder care and more.

During and since Hurricane Sandy, the 2-11 Long Island Call Center has played a critical role in connecting those in need to Disaster Case Managers, while the 2-1-1 Long

Island Database provided a way for people to find food and shelter, volunteer opportunities and applications and deadlines for assistance programs related to the storm.

The 2-1-1 Long Island Call Center operates 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, and is reached by calling 2-1-1 or 1.888.774.7633.

Scholars In The Arts For the third year, five talented Long Island music students will receive a unique opportunity to study and perform this summer at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts.

The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from

Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Usdan Center/ Bethpage Scholars in the Arts program gives accomplished students who otherwise couldn’t attend Usdan, the opportunity to study at the country’s largest notfor-profit summer arts day camp. The students were chosen for their fine musicianship and for their achievements

as outstanding representatives of their communities.

Usdan’s Executive Director, Dale Lewis, recently spoke of the program’s track record of success: “We are proud to continue this unique partnership with Bethpage Federal Credit Union, one of our region’s most prominent leaders in corporate

Center.

The winners of the Usdan/Bethpage Scholar in the Arts program are: from Huntington, Jordan Williams, a Junior at Elwood John Glenn High School. He will study Trumpet and Chorus at Usdan, performing this summer with Band IV; from Melville, Cara Jacobson is a Junior at Half Hollow Hills East

High School. She comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with the Senior Chorus and the Select Chamber Choir.

From North Babylon, Abraham Pierre is an Eighth Grade student at Robert Moses Middle School. He will study Tenor Saxophone this summer, and will perform with Band IV and in the Jazz Ensemble as well; from Commack, Joseph Tanay-Noto is a Junior at Commack High School. A cellist, he comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus; and from Levittown, Jordi Ariel Lotito is a Senior at WT Clarke High School.

A violinist, she comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus.

Fire Island Ecosystem The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything from the smallest tick to the largest shark can be found along the Fire Island National Seashore.

In my 6 years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures.

The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday.

Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls.

Types of marine life aren’t the only animals with a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted.

We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird!

Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys.

Fire Island also has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong.

Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. They are the most crucial part to Fire Island’s environment.

Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature.

These fourlegged gentle giants

scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple.

Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island.

Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous.

Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive.

Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated.

Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength.

These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan When did packing become such a source of stress?

Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before flight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way.

Not so much anymore.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations.

Having never flown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already.

But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs

slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all.

By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up.

One can only hope.

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children that are medically fragile, held a two-day summer party at White Post Farms in Melville. The party was held on July 13th and 14th from 10:30 a.m. through 6 p.m. both days.

Bob Policastro, Executive Director and founder, said, “This was a great opportunity offered to the families and their children.

We were graciously offered this great party by the generous owners of White Post Farms. Their family has a medically fragile child

and they understands what a family experiences caring for a medically fragile child.”

“This was also a great way for parents to meet each other which is a great support in itself” The party was amazing and everyone had a great time. The families deserve to have this type of special day going to the beautiful handicapped accessible White Post Farms, which is one of the top places on Long Island for family fun. They enjoyed the petting zoo, playground, bounce rides and water slides.”

This event was open to

all family members and children of Angela’s House and their nurses from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. either day for no charge. Families were also treated to a lunch and all the other amenities of the farm. Other guests are welcome on either day by paying standard admission fees. I navigate amongst the long rows of tables and with purpose - I stop.

His eyes are shining as he looks at me.

“So happy to see you once again,” I exclaim.

His face lights up.

He apologizes for forgetting my name.

That’s O.K. – I reply

I listen intently while he recounts his weekend visit with family, Grateful for their concern but content to live on his own – he explains.

A small apartment in an urban town Insures he is still viable in spite of his years.

A bus to board, A community of familiarity reassures him of his independence.

Minutes fly by – chores to finish before the end of my day.

He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant.

His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man.

The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon.

Once again, he smiles.

“I’ll be looking for you,” I say and I return the smile.

Purpose, love, confident you still count.

James R. His cardiac surgical experience includes coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, thoracic aortic disease, and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

Prior to joining Stony Brook, Dr. Taylor served as Vice Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Francis Hospital and Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery at New York HospitalCornell Medical Center, where he served as chief resident and completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. He is board certified in cardiothoracic surgery.

Along with Harold Fernandez, MD, and William Lawson, MD, he serves as Co-Director of Stony Brook Heart Institute, which is Long Island’s only universitybased cardiovascular

The Heart Institute is the region’s leading referral center for clinically complex cardiac care, with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

The AHA provides more than $16 million in grants to hospitals and other institutions on Long Island through 74 grants. Stony Brook University Hospital is currently among those receiving aid, along with SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Taylor acknowledged Dr. Woo as a peer who influenced him to come to Stony Brook in 2012 after Dr. Taylor witnessed Stony Brook’s commitment to building the Neurosciences Institute – a model he plans to follow in the Heart Institute’s development into a leading regional referral center for cardiac care.

Dr. Taylor is one of 19 Stony Brook affiliated doctors recently named among New York’s “Best Doctors” by New York magazine. The Beach Is Back There was much to celebrate in the Town of Islip today, with the long-awaited and much anticipated grand re-opening of Islip Beach, located at the end of South Bay Avenue in Islip. Supervisor Tom Croci was joined

by Town Board Members in cutting the ribbon to the new and improved facility that had suffered devastating damage from Super Storm Sandy in October, 2012.

“We stand here today to reopen one of our greatest treasures here in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Croci. “Islip Beach has a long and important history in our community, and is a special place for so many of us. The overwhelming damage incurred here was a great concern to all Town officials, and getting it open and operational for residents to use as quickly as possible was important to each and every one of us.”

Councilman and Parks Liaison Anthony Senft echoed Supervisor Croci’s sentiments. “Good government was at the forefront of every decision made relating to this massive reconstruction project. And by working together, today we open the gates to a new and improved Islip Beach.”

Islip Beach, which was donated to the Town by the Havermeyer Family, opened in 1960, and has served as a bathing beach for decades. Before Super Storm Sandy, it featured a concession stand, pavilion, playground, restrooms, outdoor shower and gazebo. The October

2012, hurricane wreaked havoc on the popular bay beach, causing nearly $2 million in damages, which included the uprooting of the concession from its foundation, unusable and unsafe boardwalks, and a beachfront strewn with storm debris.

The Town Board approved the reconstruction project in May 2013, awarding the contract to Bensin Contacting,

the highest responsible bidder. Work at the beach began almost immediately, and included the demolition of the concession, reconstruction and repair of boardwalks, the pavilion and gazebo, the installation of some new playground equipment, as well as a major cleanup of the bay and beach.

On July 12th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh attended the graduation ceremony of the Women’s Services Division’s “Going Places Network by Walmart.”

The event marked the second graduation class of 2013. The program, which is funded by a national grant from the Walmart Foundation, is designed

to help unemployed and under-employed Dress for Success clients gain professional skills, accelerate their job search and build confidence through eight weekly training sessions, one-onone career coaching and networking in a supportive environment.

The Going Places Network is facilitated by Maria Frey, President and

Founder of Executive Consultants of New York, an organization that specializes in career development and networking.

“Despite a blizzard, unending rain, and incredible heat, the Town forged ahead with reconstruction to create an even more beautiful beach,” Councilman Steve Flotteron said.

The new Islip Beach now boasts a concession facility that includes handicapped bathrooms, showers and ramps and that is equipped with an energy efficient lighting system. Ramps, railings, and boardwalks are made from Ipe wood, a dense Brazilian hardwood that is used for its durability, performance and density, and that is naturally fire, insect, moisture and movement resistant. The cost of the project is $1.76 million, with the majority of funding to come from FEMA. “We thank Islip residents for their patience during this recovery period as we worked to improve our entire Parks and Recreation system, post Sandy,” said Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. “The devastation to Islip Town as a whole was mind boggling,” noted Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Islip Beach was one of several Town facilities in need of major repair caused by Super Storm Sandy. Slowly, surely and responsibly, we are chipping away at the damage in a concentrated effort to give Islip residents back the Town that they know, love and deserve.”

County Legislator Tom Muratore and State Senator John Flanagan are pleased to announce several upcoming fundraisers to support Centereach High School’s Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleaders, also referred to as the “Spirit Club.”

To help fund the team’s upcoming trip to cheerleading camp in Pennsylvania, there are two car washes scheduled this summer. Both will be held at Auto Zone Shopping Center, located at 1930 Middle Country Road, Centereach. The first date is Saturday, July 20th, and the second is Saturday, August 10th.

4 p.m. In addition to the car washes, the Spirit Club has scheduled a Flapjack Fundraiser breakfast. This will be held on Sunday, August 4th, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s, located at 3145 Middle Country Road, Lake Grove (just east of the Smithaven Mall).

“It is important that we support our community’s youth organizations.

The skills and dedication learned today help them to become responsible young adults in the future,” stated Legislator Muratore. “We all need our cars washed, and who doesn’t like a good pancake breakfast? You can enjoy both and support the Spirit Club in the process.
