On August 5th, Supervisor Ed Romaine met with the family of 8 year-old Emily O’Connor near the location where a contractor for the New York State Department of Transportation mistakenly removed the landscaped “Adopt-A-Spot” center median on Ronkonkoma Avenue just north of the Long Island Expressway.

The median had been “adopted” by the O’Connor family to bring awareness to San Filippo Syndrome, a rare and fatal genetic disorder that Emily was diagnosed with at the age of 5 ½ years old.

The Annual Snapper Derby Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Captree State Park. The purpose of this event is to encourage children to fish; however all ages are welcome. There is no entry fee; however, a Vehicle Use fee will be in effect.

Fishing locations are throughout all of Captree State Park. Equipment prizes for 1st through 5th places will be awarded in the following age groups: 7 years old and younger; 8-12 years of age and 1316 years of age. Prizes will be presented at the awards ceremony, and winners must be present to receive prize. Snappers will be weighed alive, and live release is encouraged.

Eminent Domain is arguably an attack on the rights of American citizens.

It seems unfair that the government can just force a family out of their home.

Sure, they offer a small sum of money to cushion the grief, but is it really adequate compensation?

Our government claims to buyout the houses at market value, but with the economy in shambles as it is, market value is poor.

In my town, on Fire Island, you can refuse the buyout. You can simply say no to the puny sum offered to you. But if you do so, the government reserves the right to just take your house in the event of another disaster. If your

house gets more than fifty percent damaged in the future, you can kiss your home goodbye.

After refusing this buyout, your insurance rates would skyrocket. You would not be able to get flood insurance. Would it even be worth staying?

The economic toll that this refusal would have on the future market value of your house is astounding.

Why is this fair? Why do we accept the fact that the government controls this facet of our lives?

Some of the members of my town are doing everything we can to make sure our homes stay intact through the winter. We are dropping thousands

of dollars on “trap bags,” which promise to naturally build up a dune and protect our little town.

Beach Scraping is also an option, albeit a short-term solution. These small scale projects are doubtfully going to give us adequate protection from Mother Nature.

In actuality, we do not need this protection from the elements; we need it from the government.

When my mother came to America thirty-five years ago, she was not expecting to be at the mercy of the government, she was expecting total freedom. Eminent Domain contradicts those freedoms promised to us all.

Diamond Award

Helen Moloney, longtime resident of the Connetquot School District, and former Board of Education President, was recently presented with the New York State ParentTeacher Association (PTA) Diamond Award.

The award was created to honor dedicated volunteers, and Helen Maloney has more than earned that distinction over the 50 years of service to the organization.

Mrs. Maloney has been involved in school board service, Girl Scouts and a number of civic organizations over the years.

She served on the Connetquot School Board from 1978-85 where she was elected to vice-president and later

president. She was again elected to serve from 198891 when she served as vice president.

According to Jacqueline Wilson, current Suffolk Regional Director of the PTA, “During these years, Helen also served on the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, and on the R.E.F.I.T. (Reform Educational Financing Inequities Today) board as well as R.E.F.I.T.’s Executive Secretary”. Mrs. Maloney’s dedication to children is evident in her volunteer work in PTA and school board service, to Girl Scout activities, to being a charter member of the Connetquot Youth Development Corporation & serving on the Town of Islip Youth Board;

On National Flag Day, Friday, June 14th, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Principal Mr. Stuart Pollak joined students, family, friends and members of the community as they enjoyed an original production of ‘I Pledge for Freedom.’

This play about how the United States of America was formed and why we pledge Allegiance to it, was written, produced and directed by Ms. Lori Tutino Sycamore students would have the opportunity to enjoy the play in the

morning, while parents and community members would take their seats for the 7 p.m. performance.

Mr. Pollak said that, “Mrs. Tutino’s Drama Club put on an amazing performance about why we pledge allegiance to the flag of our great country. The show was a huge success, as club members performed, sang and danced their way into the audience’s hearts, while offering a moving, learning, experience!”

a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions.

First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm).

As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a

Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive

On June 19th Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative PreSchool, celebrated the graduation of the class of 2013 with family, friends and district representatives.

Dressed in bright red caps and gowns, this enthusiastic graduating class is a source of great pride for the parents whose cameras clicked away, looking for just the right angle for the perfect photos!

Among the invited guests was Connetquot Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Ms. Gail E. Santo.

An entertaining element of the day’s program was the performance by the youngsters for their parents and friends.

Students performed several songs, which included We’re On Our Way, What A Miracle, and We’re Moving Up To Kindergarten.

During the ceremony Dr. Cholden called the name of each graduate and had them climb over a ‘step’ bridge, symbolic of their ‘crossing’ from pre-school to next year’s kindergarten program. Each student received a graduation ‘goodie’ bag which included a copy of the special video program detailing highlights of the school year. Dr. Cholden singled

EAGLE HONOREE - The Eagle Award ceremony for James Edward Henriques of Troop #439 was recently held at the American Legion Post 155 in Ronkonkoma.

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron was on hand to thank Mr. Henriques for his continued dedication to the Islip community, and wished him well on his future endeavors.

Current teachers and administrators, such as Connetquot HS Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Brodsky, had the opportunity to share stories with retired teachers including Mr. Frank Campanelli, a beloved business teacher and championship baseball coach. The spouse of one of the alumni was heard to say “I didn’t graduate from Connetquot, but from the friendships I see here, it must have been a wonderful experience to be a ‘Thunderbird.’”

The evening was filled with great music that covered the 50 years

of Connetquot history, excellent food and just the right atmosphere for attendees to ‘catch up,’ meet old friends, and make a few new ones. Thanks to Sal & Jen Piscitelli, and the Connetquot Coaches Association, for making the Celebration of Connetquot’s 50th Anniversary so much fun.

The Connetquot School District of Islip is comprised of 11 schools located in the communities of Bohemia, Ronkonkoma and Oakdale. It is lies approximately 50 miles East of New York City, on Long Island. Located near Long Island MacArthur Airport, there are seven elementary schools, one alternative pre-school, two middle schools and one senior high school.

At the June 11th meeting of the Connetquot Central School District Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman thanked retiring BOE President Dawn Berntsen for her service to the community.

Berntsen’s term as a member of the BOE expires at the end of the school year, and she has decided not to run for re-election.

Dr. Groveman, who will retire at the end of the current school year, presented a commemorative plaque to Mrs. Berntsen for her dedicated service to the community.

The BOE President took time to thank members of the board, Dr. Groveman, Central Office staff, and that even if the Town’s community members for communications network their support during her compromised, E-Alerts can still be sent from off-site servers. E-Alert Sign-Ups Town of Islip officials are urging residents to take advantage of the Islip E-Alert system to stay informed during hurricanes and major emergencies, and also to receive important news in their community.

Residents, businesses, and community leaders

can all benefit from this system, which can instantaneously pass important information to those who have signed up.

Those who sign up for the service can opt to receive the alerts via email and/or text message.

The system has been established in such a way

Toddler Time Offered The Islip Town Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a “Toddler Time” program this autumn to children between the ages of 2-3 ½ years old. The program is meant to serve as a transition stage before a child enters pre-school.

Toddler Time focuses on socialization and activities

that stimulate a child mentally and physically.

Two sessions will be offered - one at the Bohemia Recreation Center and the other at Ronkonkoma Recreation Center.

Parents must remain at the recreation center for the duration of each class, but will often be separated from their child in order

to prepare them for a classroom atmosphere.

Classes begin the week of September 16th and space is limited.

SUMMER IN FULL SWING - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School is home to the Connetquot Thunderbird Tennis Academy summer program, where students work on tennis basics including forehands, backhands, volleys, footwork and serving. The Connetquot Thunderbird Tennis Academy helps the Connetquot High School tennis team raise money for scholarships given to graduating seniors. This year, the program presented $3,000 in scholarship grants. The campers’ enthusiasm makes it clear that tennis is a popular sport in the community.

Legislator Calarco, in conjunction with The Long Island Blood Services held a blood drive recently, to help with the major blood shortage in our community.

The Long Island Blood Services, a division of the New York Blood Center, states that due to a less than ideal number of local donors, they are forced to import 25% of their blood products from across the

United States to meet local demand.

According to the American Red Cross, when broken down into its components, one pint of blood can help save up to three lives. At Legislator Calarco’s blood drive, more than 25 pints were collected, potentially saving up to 75 lives.

Blood can be broken down into red cells, plasma and platelets, which can help

save lives in many different types of cases where a blood transfusion is necessary.

As a reward for donating, New York Mets tickets were promised to donors for helping save lives in their community. Those tickets will be mailed directly to donors within the next two weeks, so they can enjoy some New York baseball as an incentive for their good deed.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Go Green Initiative Team at the joint field office for New York Sandy recovery was recently recognized for its success in implementing sustainable practices.

The team won the Green Dream Team Award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Sustainable Practices Award program.

The annual award, which received 17 nominations from federal departments and agencies, recognizes the FEMA team for outstanding achievement in reaching their sustainability goals as outlined in Executive Order 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy and Economic Performance.

A panel of federal sustainability leaders selected the FEMA team because it presented a “superior quality project reflecting the highest ideals of [our] sustainability efforts,” according to Chris Cummiskey, senior sustainability officer for DHS. “I am impressed with the leadership and

teamwork that helped institute sustainability practices into a response and recovery effort.”

Part of the team’s initiatives included encouraging the use of mass transit and issuing fewer rental vehicles, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the 75-person team oversaw a 51 percent reduction in paper usage and took energy conservation measures like installing light sensors in restrooms at the office.

These sustainability practices are responsible for an estimated savings of $25 million.

“Even as we coordinate response and recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy, we must be good stewards of both the taxpayer’s money and the

environment,” said Willie Nunn, FEMA’s federal coordinating officer in New York. “Our Go Green Initiative Team set high goals and executed a strong sustainability strategy that is now being recognized by DHS. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far.”

The FEMA “Green Dream Team” is now being considered for a 2013 GreenGov Presidential Award, a program led by the White House Council on Environmental Quality that recognizes the efforts of federal agencies to lead sustainability practices.

The Foundation was created to enhance the quality of life in areas where National Grid provides services by creating opportunities for solutions to educational and environmental issues. Its objective is based on the principle that giving people the tools to build hope is an essential ingredient in the development of

individuals, families and communities.

Through its unique education program, SeniorNet at FSL, L.I. improves the lives of seniors who have not yet discovered 21st century technology and helps the environment by recycling computers. By way of free seminars at public libraries and its mobile learning program, SeniorNet reaches out to communities throughout Long Island including people in senior centers, VA hospital

residents and residents of Section 8 Housing.
