About a week ago, my father and I were relaxing on the beach in front of my house. What started out as a seemingly normal day abruptly shifted into a frantic morning.

The plot twist occurred when all of a sudden a dying dolphin washed up onto the beach. From a distance, it looked like a child’s inflatable toy. Its tail stuck up at a weird angle. As we moved closer, we saw what resembled a huge bite mark on its back. Flocks of people were surrounding the mammal and obstructing our view.

As one of the locals, I was there before the police. This meant that I got to see it up close.

The seemingly brutal bite mark on its back was simply two gashes where a boat’s propellor had

struck. By this point, it had been on land for close to ten minutes and it was not moving.

Lifeguards sprinted over and we tried to drag it into the water, but it did not budge. When the police finally arrived, they came in great numbers. Not much happens on Fire Island, so something this unique surely attracted attention.

This one big, angry policeman proceeded to tie a rope to the back of his decked-out Suburban, and to the tail of the now deceased animal. He put it in drive and gunned it, but got stuck in the sand.

Then, a police boat showed up. It really couldn’t help at all due to the dolphin being on land!

A second police cruiser came and dragged the first out of the sand. They

pulled the dolphin down the beach about ¼ mile and just left it to bake in the sun. The whole ride, it was bouncing along the sand. I’m sure they came back for it, because a few hours later, it was gone.

It was a truly inhumane way to treat an animal.

Even a dead fish shouldn’t be treated the way that this dolphin was treated. They showed no respect for the animal. It is a shame that this is the way the animal had to go.

It was exciting for the beach goers, but also a saddening moment for many of the Fire Island locals who enjoy watching the dolphins go by in the water every once in a while. For us, it is simply one less beautiful creature that continues to play off the shore of our little island.

STEMM Jobs initiative Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joins with Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Anthony Manetta in announcing an innovative new jobs website that bridges the gap between job seekers with prospective employers in Suffolk County.The site, www.jobs.suffolkida.org, has an initial listing of over 115 jobs and over 20 companies participating.

“This is a groundbreaking initiative that the IDA is launching. This helps fuel Suffolk’s innovation and manufacturing economy,” states County Executive Steven Bellone. Graduating college students are especially urged to visit the site for full-time employment opportunities.

“Providing this tool for our younger workers is critical to having them continue to call Suffolk County home and reverse the trends of years past.”

The website, www.jobs.suffolkida.org, is a sleek, simple to use, free interface where companies post job openings and residents can apply for jobs. This site is specifically tailored to the STEMM fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The initiative adds an “M” on the traditional STEM acronym to work with local manufactures on their hiring needs.

The Suffolk County IDA has developed a close working relationship with the Suffolk County’s Department of Labor to promote this new program among the County’s network of unemployed or underemployed residents.

“The Department of Labor and the IDA have forged an unprecedented relationship. This jobs effort at the IDA will give the residents of Suffolk County and the businesses a new job development tool,” explains Commissioner of Labor Samuel Chu. Suffolk County Deputy Executive and Commissioner of Economic Development & Planning Joanne Minieri states, “Creating a pro-business and pro-workforce website focused on STEMM jobs brings a unfounded level of government support.”

The IDA has also partnered with WorkMarket, an IDA Boost Company, to link to the company’s freelance work opportunities job feed.

Long Island based companies who are not Suffolk County IDA clients are encouraged to join the site. There are two requirements for a company’s participation: they have to be based in Suffolk County, and their company must be in a STEMM industry or the perspective job is STEMM related.

Resource partners of the initiative include Stony Brook University, Suffolk County Community College, Long Island Association, Suffolk County Department of Labor, Long Island Forum for Technology (LIFT) and LISTnet. A sampling of companies participating are Canon USA, LNK International, Contract Pharmacal, Marchon, D’Addario, A&Z Pharmaceuticals, Spellman High Voltage, Sartorius and KLD Labs.

Currently, companies are to list the jobs they create with the NYS Department of Labor; however now County residents will have more efficient and direct access to jobs created by companies who receive IDA incentives.

“This initiative provides a unique opportunity in a highly focused industry specific environment to mutually benefit our companies and workforce,” says Anthony Manetta, CEO/ Executive Director of the Suffolk County IDA. “Now with this new posting requirement, IDA companies will be more engaged in recruiting locally to fill jobs they create for receiving tax incentives.”

Yusong Yin, CEO of Photonics Industries says regarding the new initiative, “The IDA is providing a dedicated site geared toward applicants that I want to reach. This is a great program, I’m proud to be part of it.”

Potential employers like Mr. Yin have always looked locally for talent. The IDA’s new website is creating a medium by which those employers can easily find talented local applicants. At the site’s launch the company has 10 jobs posted including positions such as “Laser Engineer,” “Senior Electronics Engineer” and “Machinist.”

Kevin Law, President & CEO of the Long Island Association, says, “The Suffolk IDA continues to lead the way with innovative programs. Our employers now have an effective tool to recruit a highly qualified local workforce.”

Dr. Shaun McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, says, “The Suffolk County Community College has career development programs that provide students with the skill set for a variety of jobs, including manufacturing. This initiative by the IDA will help create additional opportunities for our students.”

Strong Island Derby Revolution formed in the spring of 2011 and currently boasts almost 50 league members, including skaters, referees, non-skating officials and coaches. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in roller derby around the world. The sport’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December of 2011. All teams are DIY organizations with the skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise.

Summer’s Sunset By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned “Last Weekend Of Summer,” even though summer won’t, in actuality, end for nearly another month.

But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQ… and let’s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate “fall” faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!)

It’s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each

year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend?

Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there.

A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments – even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates.

When is there time for fun?

But maybe the key to fun is to remain busy, to fill our days with enough activities

and people to make the time fly, to enjoy while being super-productive… and then to share every moment on Facebook and Instagram of course! (Because really, if it’s not posted on some sort of social media outlet, did it really happen??) Seems to work for most people – in this generation anyway.

And with that, we bid adieu to the sun and surf, to long hours of daylight, to warm summer nights and all the excitement that comes with living on Long Island at this time of year.

But don’t worry – the calendar says we still have a little time left to savor those last golden days. Be sure to make them count.

walk For Alzheimer’s For the sixth consecutive year, staff from Atria Senior Living will play host to more than 1,500 walkers who will participate in the 10th Annual WALK For Alzheimer’s that takes place on Saturday, September 7th, at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

“Our Walk is a huge success because of the dedication of the Atria team who arrive at 5 a.m. on the day of the Walk to produce their famous Make Your Own Omelet Breakfast,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/

Home I Hardly Knew You

Recently, Suffolk Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco ceremoniously smashed a bottle of champagne on the bow of “Marine 41” to officially christen the boat into service. Marine 41 is a Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive Response vessel procured by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office for use by the East End Marine Task Force. The Task Force is a collaborative

law enforcement initiative made up of eighteen policing agencies from the five East End towns, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office, the five East End villages, the State Park Police and the N.Y.S. DEC. The Sheriff’s Office received the boat on February 6th, 2013.

The Sheriff, along with Captain Edward J. Cubanski III, the Commander for Coast

Guard Sector Long Island Sound, Chief Ed Michels, Commander of the East End Marine Task Force, and law enforcement officials from throughout the region all gathered today at U.S. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock in Hampton Bays to christen the vessel and celebrate some recent success stories.

During the ceremony, Sheriff DeMarco praised the Coast Guard and all of

the East End Marine Task Force partners for their role in protecting Long Island’s waterways and its marine heritage. He stated: “We’re here today to christen Marine 41, but also to celebrate our success as a group with a mission to ensure secure passage and safety throughout Long Island’s beautiful East End waterways.”

Marine 41 was purchased by the Sheriff’s Office with a $1.2 million Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.

Marine law enforcement officials are utilizing the vessel for emergency response and routine patrol missions.

It was most recently used during a search and rescue mission on July 24th for a lost fisherman, John Aldridge, who was found after an extensive search approximately 43 miles off the coast of Montauk.

Aldridge and his family were in attendance as the United States Coast Guard was honored during today’s ceremony for their

role in that successful rescue operation.

Marine 41 is equipped with infrared cameras, side scan sonar, radar, chart plotters and a dual screen GPS. A computer is installed on the vessel, which provides access to

DMV data and other law enforcement databases.

The cabin is equipped with oxygen, a defibrillator, as well as EMT equipment, and can accommodate a patient on a backboard.

Suffolk County Legislator Rick Montano presented the Central Islip Civic Council with a $20,000.00 check awarded by the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel to the 9th Legislative District through their organization.

The Downtown Revitalization Grant, Round 11, totaled $250,000 and was distributed to organizations working to revitalize downtown areas in Suffolk County.

The grant money will be utilized to construct an attractive entranceway at the southern edge of

downtown Central Islip on Carleton Avenue at the intersection of Smith Street.

Currently, there is no signage or landscape element indicating the entrance to the traditional downtown area. Decorative lighting and brick pavers will be installed at each of the four corners. The southwest corner of Smith Street will feature a landscape element that will include two flag poles, a “Welcome to Downtown Central Islip” sign, and brick columns with decorative fencing.

The Town of Islip will provide matching funds to

complete the project.

“I am very happy to once again secure funding for our downtown redevelopment/ beautification projects in the 9th Legislative District,” Montano said.

“By ensuring continued representation from our district on the Downtown Revitalization Citizens Advisory Panel, we can continue to secure funds and invest in our community.”

Sachem Public Library was one of fifty sites nationwide selected to receive a $2,500 grant to host a six-week series featuring documentary film screenings and scholar-led discussions of 20th century American popular music.

The Library will host America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues To Bluegrass To Broadway to enlighten audiences about uniquely American musical genres including blues and gospel, Broadway, jazz, bluegrass and country, rock & roll, mambo, and hip hop.

“America’s Music” is a project by the Tribeca Film Institute in collaboration with the American Library Association, Tribeca Flashpoint, and the Society for American Music. “America’s Music” has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor.

“America’s Music,” designed for a general audience, will introduce genres of 20th century American popular music that are deeply connected to the history, culture, and geography of the United States. Older and younger Americans alike will have the chance to recognize how the cultural landscape

that they take for granted today has been influenced by the development of the popular musical forms discussed in this series.

The onset of the 20th century brought pervasive changes to American society. During the early part of the century, these social changes combined with new technologies to create a mass market for popular music that evolved over the next 100 years.

The “America’s Music” series is not meant to offer an all-inclusive treatment of twentieth-century American popular music.

Instead, each screening and discussion session will examine an important American musical genre in the context of key social and historical developments, with events in American music history acting as a catalyst for that examination.

The screenings will take place on Friday evenings from September 20th to November 1st. The discussions will be led by Peter Winkler, Professor of Music at Stony Brook University, a composer and music scholar who has done research in and taught college-level courses in American popular music for over 40 years. On the Sunday afternoons following the Friday night film and

discussion, the Library will present a concert of the featured musical genre.

Coastal Cleanup Coming There are a many beaches, streams and wetlands within Islip Township and the upcoming International Coastal cleanup is one way to help keep them healthy. The ICC is an unusual volunteer project because it combines waterside cleanup with a tally of all litter removed during the activity. The data recorded is analyzed by the Ocean Conservancy in Washington and the American Littoral Society to help determine pollution trends.

As the name implies, the ICC is an international event with cleanups taking place at waterways around the globe during the same time period in mid-September. The main date of this year’s 28th Annual ICC is on

Saturday, September 21st and groups are encouraged to register with Keep Islip Clean to choose a waterway and be part of this important environmental event.

Cleanups can take place anytime within the last two weeks of September with every effort made to give volunteers their first choice of location.

“The ICC is the only international event that I know of that scientifically analyzes information collected by volunteers,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean.

KIC provides all data collection materials, instructions and cleanup supplies.

Support Group Church of St. Mary, East Islip is offering a free 8-week support group for adults who are struggling to cope with the death of a loved one.

Registration is required for this group, which begins on Wednesday September 11th and runs through October 30th, from 7 to 9 p.m. In order to participate in this group, the death must have occurred prior to June 11th, 2013. Refreshments are included.

Tips For Packing School Lunch With the start of the school year quickly approaching, parents will soon be faced with the task of packing and sending a healthy, nutritious and tasty lunch off to school with their children. Stop & Shop is offering several ways for families to think outside of the lunchbox while making sure their children understand the importance of good nutrition.

“If you make your child part of the actual lunch preparation process they will become more

receptive to eating and enjoying what’s in their lunch box,” says Arlene Putterman, Manager of Public and Community Relations of Stop & Shop New York Metro Division.

Putterman also suggests that you introduce a new food every week ”When you and your child are grocery shopping, have them pick out one new fruit or vegetable to try for that week.”

Stop & Shop also offers these suggestions: • For sandwiches, choose whole grain, raisin

or cinnamon bread, a mini bagel, a tortilla wrap or a pita instead of plain white sandwich bread.

• Select sliced lean or low-fat brands of lunch meat like turkey, chicken, lean ham or lean roast beef in place of fatty luncheon meats.

• For children who don’t like sandwiches, low-fat cheeses paired with whole grain crackers can be a healthy alternative, while still providing similar nutrition content.

• Make lunches as bright and colorful as possible

using plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Cut up fresh veggies and pair with low-fat ranch dressing, sunflower seed butter, veggie dip, low-fat plain Greek yogurt, or hummus.

• Veggie kabobs with cucumber chunks, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper wedges, and other veggies.

• Have kids make their own trail mix, and limit the chocolate chips, preferably dark chocolate, to one tablespoon per baggie.

Mix: whole grain cereal, dried fruits like raisins, dried cranberries, or dry

mango-pieces, sunflower or pumpkin seeds and whole grain pretzels.

• Make your own portion-sized snacks. For a healthier snack that satisfies salty, crunchy cravings, replace potato chips with a baggie of lowfat microwave popcorn or consider corn or whole grain chips and salsa.

• Add an insulated lunch bag and ice pack to your school supply list. Packing your child’s lunch in one of these will help to keep foods cool all morning. Or place a frozen water bottle

into the insulated bag in the morning and it will not only keep the food cold, but will be thawed to drink at lunchtime.

Putterman also suggests that you vary your child’s weekly menu by changing up the lunchbox routine.

The same meals can get boring for kids. Try rotating the types of protein, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains you use.

Scholarship Recipients Alexandra Solowinska is grateful to the Stony Brook University Cancer Center for helping her fight to overcome her cancer. Now she is benefiting from a scholarship award that will help her pursue her dream of becoming a doctor at Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

Solowinska, 18, daughter of Elizabeth and Arkadiusz Solowinska of Mattituck, is one of 24 pediatric oncology patients who received the Daniel Brooks Memorial Educational Awards, which were presented in a ceremony hosted on Aug. 9 by the Division of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. A graduate of Mattituck-Cutchogue Junior/Senior High School, she will attend Stony Brook University in the fall.

Solowinska addressed the audience to express her gratitude, not only for the award, but for everything the Cancer Center has done for her.

“Despite having to receive chemotherapy here, I consider Stony Brook my home, and the doctors and nurses part of my family,” she said.

The Daniel Brooks Memorial Education awards are given each year to students who have been treated for cancer at Stony Brook Cancer Center to help fund their education at a college or trade school. Established in

2003, the awards are supported through the Sunrise Fund, which was created in 1999 to raise awareness and funds for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology programs at Stony Brook Children’s. Since its inception, the awards have totaled $180,000 in support for students.

The awards were established in memory of Daniel Brooks of Port Jefferson, who was treated for leukemia at the Cancer Center as a teenager in the 1990s. Following his treatment, Brooks obtained a degree in special education. Since he could empathize with children undergoing treatment and perhaps inspire them, Brooks returned to the Cancer Center to develop a program of hope for them.

Working with the healthcare professionals at Stony Brook, he offered his unique perspective as a survivor who had faced the challenges of returning to school. He also provided his perspective as a teacher to help develop Stony Brook’s School Re-entry Program, which helps children undergoing treatment for cancer to return to school when medically cleared. Brooks lost his life in 2002 in a motor vehicle accident.

“This is the eleventh year we have given scholarships to our current and former patients who are cancer survivors who are furthering their education,” said

Debra Giugliano, RN, MS, Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. “Dan’s input was invaluable to our current program. It’s fitting that this award is named for Dan, whose spirit and dedication to education and children with cancer endure through this award program.”

At the awards ceremony, Robert Parker, MD, FAAP, Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology program, presented certificates to attendees as their families and friends looked on. A reception followed the presentation in the Charles B. Wang Center on the Stony Brook University campus.

This year’s guest of honor at the ceremony was Joseph DiNero from the Suffolk County Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, who serves as fundraising chairman for the chapter. Funds raised by the Knights of Columbus support the scholarship program through the Sunrise Fund.

“All the good works we do are based on four core principles: charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism,” DiNero said. “It is not what the Knights of Columbus does for the Sunrise Fund, it is what the Sunrise Fund does for the Knights of Columbus in the way it has motivated our chapter to help children with cancer.”

High Tech Building Opens come online in spring 2013, in which space is dedicated solely to electronic testing and features special facility accommodations for eligible students such as those who are hearing or sight impaired.

“Robert’s connection to and investment in Stony Brook runs deep and personal,” said Dr. Stanley. “It includes almost every role imaginable, from teaching and research to philanthropy and indeed, bricks and mortar, having accomplished something no other who came before him was able to do – he built a 135-room Hilton Garden Inn on campus. I cannot emphasize enough how important – how significant – his contributions to the campus community have been.”

After securing his bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook in 1980, Dr. Frey demonstrated his commitment to his alma mater while building a career that spanned such notable institutions as the IRS, Doubleday Book Co., European American Bank, Morgan Stanley, Renaissance Technologies and sustained that commitment as he branched off into his own businesses, Harbor Financial Management and Frey Quantitative Strategies. His first foray into teaching at SBU was as an assistant professor in the Psychology Department, then in the Education and Special Development Department, followed by the Institute for Pattern Analysis, and as a Research Professor in the Applied Math and Statistics Department, an appointment he has held since 2004.

In 2008, the Frey Family Foundation established the Frey Endowed Chair and Professorship in Quantitative Finance in the Department of Applied Mathematics and

Statistics in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook and also established the Frey Scholarship for the College. Dr. Frey is a continuing member of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Dean’s Council, he is a former Stony Brook Foundation Trustee and former member of the University Hospital Auxiliary Board. In addition, the Frey’s generous support has touched a wide variety of programs on campus, from athletics, student scholarships, to alumni affairs and the hospital. A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Robert and his wife Kathryn have taken leadership roles in: Mather Hospital, Port Jefferson Board of Education, Mt. Sinai Board of Education, Hope House Ministries, Suffolk County College Foundation, Alliance of Guardian Angels and the Royal Foundation.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized today; I feel like I should be thanking Stony Brook,” said Dr. Frey at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Stony Brook changed my life. This University is engaged in such a noble mission; one that has changed so many lives, transforming students through research and education. I too am better because of Stony Brook.”

“Frey Hall is a state-of-the-art multimedia equipped classroom building designed to meet the current technological needs of our faculty and students,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “It is evident that Frey Hall exemplifies the classroom of the future, in that, it will inspire and allow for new academic innovations.”

Stony Brook University cut the ribbon of Frey Hall, commemorating the opening of the first building dedicated solely to classroom space on the Long Island campus. Stony Brook President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. was joined by Dr. Robert Frey and his wife Kathryn, academic leadership, faculty and staff from across the University, and elected officials including Sen. John Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, to celebrate the $31M, 95,000 square-foot renovation project that began in March 2011. The project, designed by architectural firm EwingCole to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification, converted one of the oldest buildings on the campus known as “Old Chemistry” (construction for which began in 1962) into a modern new teaching facility with 1,971 seats (including three new 250 seat lecture halls), 27 new classrooms and creative new teaching space, which, combined, will host nearly 240 courses this fall.

Named to honor Dr. Robert Frey and the Frey Family Foundation in grateful recognition of their 35-year commitment to Stony Brook University, the new classroom building incorporates several signature teaching and learning with technology (TLT) features, including an “Active Learning Center” and a “Testing Center.” The Active Learning Center is a 180-seat classroom space organized around tables of six in which an instructor and teaching assistants lead the students through cooperative learning, problembased learning and team- problem solving exercises in a media intense environment. The Testing Center is a relatively new concept in higher education, slated to
