The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 14th.

The Game Farm is partnering with Natural Earth Farms who will provide a pumpkin patch and farm stand. There will also be craft vendors and special activities, such as face painting, a kiddie hay maze, pumpkin slingshot, pony rides and corn target

Eight Project SEARCH internship candidates have successfully completed their first week at Medford Multicare Center.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Teacher Linda Niosi said, “During the first week, the students had an opportunity to adjust to their new surroundings, prepare resumes, and tour the facility.”

The eight interns

were chosen for Project SEARCH based on their interests, strengths, and needs. During the first week, the students were introduced to central supply, dietary, recreation, laundry, and housekeeping departments.

They also interviewed with department heads. Ms. Niosi said, “The staff is wonderful and the residents are great. The students’ social skills are improving and I think this is going to be a great year.”

Project SEARCH was designed to assist students with disabilities transition to adult life, and obtain and maintain competitive employment. The goal is for the students to learn marketable skills.

Project SEARCH was developed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and has grown to over 200 sites across the United States.

The partnership with ESBOCES and Medford Multicare is the only one on Long Island.

During the first week of school, parents were invited to an informational meet-and-greet-dinner at Medford Multicare, along with staff members from ESBOCES. Medford Multicare Administrator

David Fielding said, “No one knows what we are capable of doing, until we try. This is a highly selective program and we want the students to develop the skills they need to be successful. We know that in June 2014, this will be the first graduating class of Project SEARCH from Medford Multicare and ESBOCES.” Hunter Sola’s father Jose is very excited for his son.

The family resides in the Three Village CSD. Mr. Sola said, “He gets up early and takes the Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) bus every day.

Hunter wants to succeed and be independent.

There’s nothing else like this program. Project SEARCH will give him the tools he needs to succeed.”

For the next ten months, Medford Multicare will be a school and an internship training ground for Nicholas, Marta, James, Jonathan, Zabiah, Tyler, Hunter, and Austin. They will learn employability skills from a specialized Project SEARCH curriculum, engage in classroom work with teacher Linda Niosi, and be mentored by Medford Multicare staff.

The Long Island Chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA), a national non-profit organization devoted to promoting women’s success on and off the course, is planning its end of season awards dinner for October 1st at the Crest Hollow Country Club. This annual event celebrates the achievements of EWGA members; awards will be given out for our 13 league championships and league tournaments.

According to Long Island Chapter President Susan Pickering, “There’s still time to play and enjoy the benefits of membership which include networking,

outings and discounts from our sponsors. We have leagues to cater to every level of play, from the beginner to the scratch golfer. If you want to help us redefine afternoon tee, we’d love to have you.”

a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do.

Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination.

Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. So please join for what will surely be another monumental event to support this inspirational family in their time of need.

A Week To Remember County and St. John the Baptist DHS. While at this selective program, I met many of America’s future prominent faces. I made many friends, and accomplished a great deal.

I was elected City Clerk, County Scribe and even

nominated as my County’s candidate for Boys’ Nation.

In addition I assumed the role as Director for the Statesman TV News, as well as the Head Writer for the Statesman Printed News.

I would not have been able to fulfill all of these

opportunities without the guidance, support and sponsorship of the Police Association of Suffolk County. This group of men comprised of many, if not all, retired policemen, truly made my dream a reality. They trusted me with their support, and I hope I did not disappoint them.

Just last week, I was invited back to the Board Meeting and gave a summation of my experience during my week at Boys’ State. It has been an amazing road, and I am very glad that I found the Police Association of Suffolk County.

I would like to finalize this week’s article with a big ‘thank you’ to the Police Association of Suffolk County!

This summer, I was given the opportunity to compete at the American Legion Boys’ State Program. For around 1,100 of Long Island’s most promising leaders, this week away from our parents was a big deal.

Even though I was rejected from my first application for the program, I did not lose hope.

I was soon referred to Mr. Marco Calise, one of the Vice Presidents of the Police Association of Suffolk County. He had faith in me. At one of their meetings, the board, as well as the entire group, debated upon many boys vying for the position.

I am proud to say that I was chosen to represent Suffolk County, the Police Association of Suffolk

Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Tips For Tree Maintenance Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of

year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree.

Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property.

Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

• Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned.

the growth of nearby limbs.

• Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned.

• Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

• Remove dead limbs.

Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

• Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/ or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped.

Topping also decreases a tree’s life expectancy.

Stepping Up with Solar Rebates In response to LIPA’s recent announcement that solar rebates are being suspended (Newsday, August 30th, 2013), Long Island Power Solutions of Islandia has launched their own Solar Rebate program named, “No Rebate, No Problem.”

Joseph Milillo of Long Island Power Solutions introduced the “No Rebate, No Problem” program on September 9th. “What we are offering our customers is our own rebate program commensurate with the rebates that LIPA had offered prior to the recently announced suspension,” said Milillo.

“Along with Federal and State tax incentives, which can cover 55% of the cost of a solar system, the LIPA Solar Rebate program helped to make solar energy an affordable alternative for Long Island home owners.

Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that.

What a difference one week can make, right?

I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.)

But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties.

Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all...

Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.

Thanksgiving Breakfast employees and community members. This committee was formed as an act of goodwill and hosted an annual Supervisor’s Thanksgiving Breakfast Fundraiser to purchase turkeys for clients of Town programs and agencies in the Youth Bureau, Human Development and Handicapped Services Divisions.

Over the years the “Breakfast” has expanded, and last year 425 baskets of Thanksgiving meal provisions were delivered

to clients of 57 different community agencies and local churches. This year we hope to exceed that number and provide baskets to more families in need.

On Monday, September 9th, Councilwoman Kepert joined Suzanne Johnson, Director of the Longwood Public Library, and Ira Siegel, President of the Birchwood at Spring Lake Civic Association, in celebrating the grand opening of the library’s temporary location at 1241 Middle Country Road,

Middle Island (King-Kullen Shopping Center).

The library has moved during planned renovations and expansion of the existing building located east of CR 21 on Middle Country Road in Middle Island, which will be closed for approximately 11 months during the construction phase.

“The Longwood Library is an active community hub and I’m sure it will continue to be so during the construction of an even better community facility,” stated Councilwoman Kepert.

“We are open for business!,” said Suzanne Johnson.

Wheelchair Softball

On Friday, September 13th, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilwoman Connie Kepert, and Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh attended the opening ceremonies for the 13th Annual Wheelchair Softball Tournament.

The two-day tournament was sponsored by the Major League Wheelchair Softball Tournament, the New York Mets, Major League Baseball, the Wheelchair Sports Federation, and the Town of Brookhaven and was held at the Brookhaven Wheelchair Softball Field, located next to the Pennysaver Amphitheatre at 55 S. Bicycle Path in Farmingville.

Supervisor Romaine said, “Some of the best athletes that you will ever

see were on the field today.

Their competitive spirit and sportsmanship is an inspiration to us all and I am proud that the Town of Brookhaven is a sponsor of this annual event.”

Councilwoman Kepert advocated for the construction of the wheelchair softball and multi-purpose fields. She is a former Special Education teacher who also organized and ran the Longwood School District’s Disability Awareness Week for several years.

“These games provide those who are wheelchair bound the opportunity to continue to participate in sports, have fun, and show off their abilities,” stated Ms. Kepert. “It is truly inspiriting and motivating

to see how dedicated these individuals are to the game. I am happy to serve on a Board in a Town that provides recreational opportunities for residents of all abilities.”

Simple Bathroom Renovations Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. Noel S. Ruiz, the founder and executive director of the CM Performing Arts Center, suddenly passed

away Sunday evening due to heart failure.

Noel founded Creative Ministries, a not-for-profit Christian based theatrical organization on February 15th 1987. His mission was to spread a message of peace and an all inclusive acceptance through the creative arts.

His vision led countless volunteers on a journey from a youth ministry at St. John Nepomucene to a fully realized center for the performing arts, which

opened on May 23rd 1997.

The CM Performing Arts Center of Oakdale now produces 10 main stage, 10 children’s theatre, and 4 teen productions per year. They offer classes for children and young adults.

Noel’s legacy and his vision will continue to grow under the supervision of his Board of Directors.
