onnetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School’s Mrs. Laura McNally, Coordinator of Youth and Family Services (YFS), recently invited Idle Hour Elementary School students to ‘Plant The Promise.’ The purpose of this exercise was to remind students once spring starts that they each made a promise to lead a healthy lifestyle by being drug and alcohol free. Students planted tulip bulbs with shovels that read Plant The Promise.

The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Forty-Seven (347) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the approximately 900 students in NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one third of the total number of students selected for All State.

Students will gather to rehearse and perform in Rochester as NYSSMA celebrates its 81st year of advocating for quality music education in schools throughout New York State. This Conference will mark the sixteenth (16th) in a row to be held at the Rochester Convention Center, and will feature Nancy Ditmer, president of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as keynote speaker. ``We are very excited about returning to Rochester – it’s like a second home for NYSSMA,” said president Marc E. Greene. ``More than one thousand music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals.

Among the highlights of our conference, however, are the many wonderful performances by our All State students.”

Youth Orchestra Openings The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. The twoweek tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base. An optional, additional week of touring in Hawaii will be offered.

MYO ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the years with concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Australia

and New Zealand, Spain, Italy, and Greece. John McNeur, founder and former Executive Director of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, said, “This has proven to be a life-changing experience for so many young people. (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving.

The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults.

First, kids text more.

Texting is their preferred mode of communication.

According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted

by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of

parents are aware of this.

Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience.

Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction.

If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road.

Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive.

The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

Project Lifesaver Representatives of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office recently delivered a Project Lifesaver transmitter bracelet to Kim Covell of Watermill whose son has autism.

The start-up cost of getting the device for the family was underwritten by the East End Police Foundation, which has recently partnered with the Sheriff’s Office to help promote the initiative. Ms. Covell is the founder of the Flying Point Foundation for Autism.

Project Lifesaver is a tracking system for Suffolk County residents who care for children or adults that have the propensity to wander from their homes or care facilities.

The system is designed to assist law enforcement and rescue agencies with locating lost or missing persons.

Registered Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery-operated transmitter bracelet that emits an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day.

Each transmitter has a range of several miles, and has its own frequency, enabling Deputy Sheriffs to positively locate and identify a missing person.

To date, the Sheriff’s Office has purchased a total of ten tracking units with asset forfeiture funds, and recently expanded the number of Deputy

Sheriffs trained to use the equipment.

“I encourage anyone caring for a loved one with autism or other cognitive challenges to look into Project Lifesaver. It offers great peace of mind to know that we have the capability to find them if they wander away unnoticed, and more importantly, to find them quickly to best ensure they are brought home safely,” stated Sheriff Vincent DeMarco.

CANDLELIGHT BALL - AHRC Suffolk’s 53rd Annual Candlelight Ball, held on November 8th at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, was a wonderful success, raising approximately $450,000 for programs and services for intellectually and developmentally disabled children and adults. Decking The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else!

And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless.

And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified.

I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,

completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived.

I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon.

After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1st with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island, the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of American Painting, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William Sidney Mount and his brother Shepard Alonzo

Mount. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014.

Finally, the newly named Victoria Costigan gallery will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best known for his poured, abstract paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House, Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014.

Summer exhibitons will include Long Island at War and a special exhibition, in celebration of the 75th anniversary, LIM @ 75: Treasures from the Permanent Collection, highlighting 75 rarely seen paintings, carriages and artifacts. In addition, visitors will delight at a new outdoor series featuring

Career Center, Austin was enrolled in the Facilities Maintenance Program.

There he learned how to spackle, install and maintain landscaping, do light carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.

This provided practical experience for Austin when he was accepted into the internship program at Medford Multicare.

Throughout the internship, Josephine will work with Austin and the other students to learn complex yet systematic tasks. She said, “My job is to learn the job that a student will be doing. I break down the tasks of each job and create task analysis data.

Austin is now able to do a 17-point check when he monitors and maintains the hallways at Medford Multicare. He doesn’t need a mentor for that anymore.

The goal is for Austin to gain independence and feel accomplished.”

Mr. Restrepo commended Austin’s spackling ability.

He said, “I thought one of my maintenance men had done the work. When I found out that Austin did it, I asked him where he learned to spackle; he told me, ‘at ESBOCES.’” Austin recently learned how to fix an adjustable electric bed

Meet Austin, an Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) student from Connetquot CSD engaged in an internship opportunity at Medford Multicare Living Center. Austin was one of seven students chosen to participate in Project SEARCH because of his interest, strengths, and needs.

Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit?

“Your hands are the main transmitters of health care-acquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.”

Two simple things can go a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats --

keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly.

Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers.

“Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will

be getting at where the majority of germs are.”
