R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighthgraders Michelle Sun and Michelle Hu have been named winners in the National Council of Teachers of English 2013 Promising Young Writers Program. Nationally, 211 students were nominated to compete in this year’s competition, 51 of which came from New York State. Out of these submissions, only eight New York students were honored as winners.

As part of the competition, the Three Village eighth-graders each submitted two pieces of writing, which were read by national judges.

Papers were judged on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development and style. Drawing on the theme “Unexpected Connections,” Michelle Sun wrote a story on the life of twins, while Michelle Hu wrote a thought-provoking piece about nuclear war and individuals’ social mistakes. The students’ second compositions were lighter in nature: Michelle Sun wrote a series of vignettes called “Transportation Protection,” while Michelle Hu described her experiences on the school’s Science Olympiad team in a piece called “Changing the

Stars.”

Murphy English Department Chairperson Catherine Duffy was very pleased to learn that two of the four students nominated from Murphy were among the eight students recognized statewide as winners.

“I speak on behalf of the entire English department when I say we are so proud of Michelle Hu and Michelle Sun being selected for this honor,” she said. “We look forward to reading more of their published writings in the future.”

The school’s other two nominees were eighthgraders Craig Deng and Mirette Nunez, who were presented with certificates of participation from the NCTE.

Women’s Spa Night held at the St. Ursula Center in Blue Point offered treatments and therapies to soothe the mind, body, and soul.

More than 90 women signed up to be pampered by local practitioners and students enrolled in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Adult Cosmetology Program.

Services and treatments were donated and ranged from manicures, facials, and massages to tai chi, yoga, meditation, nutrition information, and reflexology.

St. Ursula Center in Blue Point is a retirement home and a retreat center for the sisters. Today, the center is a place where the older sisters are cared for.

The Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk who retire to the center in Blue Point spent their life ministering as teachers, administrators, and parish ministers.

Earning bachelor,

masters, and sometimes doctoral degrees, they set new trends and made a difference in the world.

On Friday, April 19th, the center was transformed into a setting of complete tranquility and peacefulness.

Participants retreated and relaxed in an area that smelled heavenly while they waited to indulge in their chosen treatments or therapies.

There were soothing sounds, inspirational scents, and tables filled with nature’s gifts of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and wine.

Margaret Westhoff traveled from Mastic Beach to be reinvigorated.

She said, “I’m going to meditate, do yoga, and then get a facial.” For a fee of $50, participants elected to do one individual treatment and two group therapies.

Ms. Westhoff said, “I’ve attended cultural events here at St. Ursula’s

Center. It’s a lovely place.

Tonight I’m here for total relaxation.”

She came to the right place, as did Joan Smith from Coram. Joan said she was meeting some friends.

“I never did this before but it sounds wonderful and I want to help the sisters.”

Joan signed up for yoga, meditation, and a massage.

Massage Therapist Mary Elizabeth Seery and Reflexologist Sr. Laurentine Morgan met five years ago and have donated their services at spa night for two years.

“We are of like minds,” they agreed. Said Sr. Laurentine, “To see stress fade away and pain leave the body - it’s wonderful. You can see the countenance of the person change.”

This was also the first year for the ESBOCES cosmetology students at Women’s Spa Night.

ESBOCES Cosmetology Teacher Dorothea LoBiondo said, “There is a 1,000 hour requirement for students to take the New York State licensing exam so I try to get the students out into the community.

They practice their skills while servicing the community.”

ESBOCES students have provided services to residents of veteran’s homes, students of local school districts putting on plays, and teenagers who need their hair and makeup done for prom night. Adult Cosmetology student Nicole Castro said, “I feel good knowing that this evening’s event benefits the sisters and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Family, faculty and members of the Port Jefferson administration came together on May 2nd to honor the newest inductees of the school’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The middle school chamber ensemble, led by Christian Neubert, provided musical accompaniment throughout the program, during which students in the seventh and eighth grades were recognized for their achievements.

The evening began with a warm welcome to all from Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana, who told parents that they should be “extremely proud” of all that their children have accomplished. He noted that these accomplishments were “nothing short of remarkable,” adding, “Not only do they manage to maintain a 92 grade point average throughout all of their academic courses, but they also demonstrate characteristics of leadership, scholarship and character in their everyday activities.”

Current NJHS President Virginia Albinson spoke next, addressing and congratulating her peers. “Your hard work and dedication has paid off,” she said. “The Port Jefferson School District gives its students many opportunities to show their merits – whether they be accelerated classes, clubs or sports – and you are here because you have taken those opportunities and made them into something great.”

The service continued with NJHS adviser Michelle Landetta leading the ceremony of the candle lighting, where inductees lit their own individual candles from one of the five pillar candles representing scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship. During

this time, inductees were also presented with a certificate, pin and official NJHS membership card. Additionally, an honorary National Junior Honor Society Award was granted to building representative Bonnie Kelsch for her service to the district and local community.

Concluding the evening was Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who advised the new inductees to “take advantage of all the opportunities that you have available...become very active in the school, become very active in your community, and continue to exemplify all these wonderful traits that you have displayed thus far.”

After 13 years of dedication to their academics, Rocky Point High School seniors Sidarth Menon, Elizabeth Kidney and Matthew Amoscato have been named this year’s Class of 2013 valedictorian, salutatorian and exhortation speaker, respectfully. During their time in Rocky Point, these students have worked to create a perfect balance between their commitment to academics and extracurricular activities as they stood as leaders of the 243-member Rocky Point High School Class of 2013.

Sidarth Menon – Valedictorian While a student in the Rocky Point School District, Sidarth Menon has taken the most rigorous courses available to him and continued to maintain a most challenging course selection offered in his senior year. Earlier this year, based on his performance on Advanced Placement exams, Sidarth was granted one of the College Board’s highest honors by being named an AP Scholar with Distinction. Outside of the classroom, he has excelled in numerous activities, showing his ability to carefully balance extracurricular activities with academics.

He is a competitive lettering tennis player, a drum major for the marching band, president of the Science Club, captain of the Science Bowl and vice president of Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Additionally, he contributes to the community as a peer tutor to many students of all grades. He will be attending the University of Pittsburgh in the fall, where he will

major in history.

Elizabeth Kidney – Salutatorian While at Rocky Point High School, Elizabeth Kidney has undertaken the most demanding and balanced program of studies, including every honors and AP

course available to her. In recognition of her dedication to her academics, Liz was named an AP Scholar with Honor by the College Board and a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Beyond the classroom, Liz is a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Math Honor Society and an

Top Of The Class active volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Over the years, she has worked on the planning committee, as the entertainment chairperson and a Relay For Life co-captain, as she strived to raise thousands of dollars for this worthy cause. Liz also volunteers her time as a peer mentor and tutor for younger students at the school and in the community and has volunteered at the Wooded Acres Animal Hospital. She will be attending St. Joseph’s College in the fall.

Matthew Amoscato – Exhortation Speaker Rocky Point High School senior Matthew Amoscato has excelled in numerous areas, demonstrating not only his expertise, but also his diversity as an individual.

Driven to excel academically, Matthew has maintained a challenging course load each year, including enrollment in many of the school’s Advanced Placement courses. As a testament to his work in the classroom, Matthew was named an AP Scholar with Honor earlier this year. As an athlete, he has been an important member of the varsity football, wrestling and lacrosse teams. Matthew is president of the Varsity Club and a member of the Be a Nicer Neighbor club and Students Against Destructive Decisions. His leadership skills have enabled these organizations to raise money for various community-based projects. Matthew has committed to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point to further his education.

Newest Members Inducted Kahn emphasized the importance of acknowledging, understanding and following the necessary processes to achieve one’s goals.

“There are some people who have said to reach for the stars, and if you don’t make it you will land among the clouds,” said Kahn. “I say to reach for the stars without a

plan is just wishful thinking. If you can develop the right plan you will be able to name your star.”

The induction continued with the ceremony of the emblem, ceremony of the candle-lighting and the roll call of inductees, all led by current honor society members. Five colored candles represented the pillars of the National Honor Society – knowledge, character, scholarship, leadership and service. Inductees lit their

own individual candles from one of the pillar candles representing the ideal that they choose to most closely follow.

The ceremony concluded with a reciting of the society’s pledge, as well as remarks from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who thanked parents for their continued support of the school and of their children. He then commended the honorees for their hard work and dedication.

“You’ve done a wonderful job of grasping the offerings that have been made available to you, rising to the challenges that your teachers have placed before you and really demonstrating the excellence that makes us proud to be a part of this school community.”

On April 24th, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 44 new members. Organized in 1952, the district chapter is currently led by teachers Michel Krivosta and Laurie McMillen. The high school chamber ensemble, prepared

by Director of Music and Fine Arts Michael Caravello, provided musical accompaniment throughout the evening.

The ceremony began with a greeting from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy, who encouraged honorees to be proud of their accomplishments, not only in academics but also with everything they have done to serve the community. During the school year, current members of the National Honor Society have participated in several service activities such as letter-writing campaigns to service men and women overseas, raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, serving as guides to parents on Back-to-School nights and peer tutoring.

“Let me be the first to encourage you to continue to strive to be the best in everything you do,” said Murphy.

“Keep your burning desire to achieve constantly alive.”

Next, the group’s advisers and chapter president Julia Woznicki welcomed students, faculty and attendees before the ceremony of the pin address, given by David Kahn, DDS, a 2002 Earl L. Vandermeulen graduate. Dr.

Literary Wonders Two young authors in the Three Village Central School District have received acclaim in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s 27th Annual Poetry Contest. Out of the approximately 4,000 entries, W.S. Mount Elementary School sixthgrader Maya Pena-Lobel was named second prize winner in Category B – individual poem, grades 5-6, and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventhgrader Olivia Schmitt won honorable mention in her respective category.

Maya submitted to the contest of her own volition after learning about it from her brother’s English teacher at Ward Melville High School, Brian McAuliffe. “I really started to enjoy poetry

in the fourth grade and since that time have filled many notebooks with my own poems during my free time,” she said. “I’ve been looking for a contest to enter for a while, and when I found out about this one, I was happy that I met all of the criteria for submission.

Sometimes poems come to me at the most unexpected times – like only a few days ago during the state math exam – and I write them down as quickly as possible.” Maya’s original poem for the contest, titled “The Journey of a Lifetime,” focused on an imaginary road that she used as a metaphor for life. She wrote about the challenges individuals face in life and the ways in which they can overcome those difficulties.

Olivia has made a name for herself in the literary contest circuit this year, having also won honorable mention in BlueNose Edutainment’s Chasing Mavericks writing contest.

Olivia’s poem for the Walt Whitman contest, “The Opening,” focused on the bumps along the road of life and how positive opportunities are presented when a new “road” appears.

Both students, along with their families and teachers, have been invited to a celebration in Huntington in early June where they will be presented with their awards and have the chance to hear music from Walt Whitman’s time period, view an exhibit about Walt Whitman and tour the historic house.

Port Jefferson Station’s Matthew Mayers, a liberal arts/biology student from Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus, recently received a 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence from the State University of New York. The awards were presented during a ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. In all, 243 students from SUNY campuses throughout the state were honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award.

“The students we honor today have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists, and community volunteers,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher.

“By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus, and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride.”

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated,

and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.

Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award.

Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

Mr. Mayers is an National Science Foundation STEM scholar and one of Suffolk County Community College’s Get There from Here Scholars.

The Get There From Here scholarship program promotes academic excellence and provides an opportunity for outstanding residents of

Suffolk County to attain their educational goals.

Scholarship recipients can receive up to $5,000 annually and the funds can be used to cover tuition and fees, books and supplies.

“Suffolk County Community College is committed to providing an atmosphere where academic excellence can grow and flourish,” said Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College.

Individual Special Education Aide Tina Retenski knows she’s a healthy person because she does everything she’s supposed to for maintaining a healthy heart.

Yet, she wanted to confirm her previously normal blood pressure readings while participating in the agency’s recognition of National Workplace Wellness Week, April 1st through 7th, by having her blood pressure taken.

Joining the national effort of healthy habits and physical activity initiatives, Ms. Retenski went to a Blood Pressure Screening event at Brookhaven Academic Center (BAC) where Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) students in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program were readying for the public’s arrival.

Teacher Denise Filingeri said, “LPN students are always eager to utilize

the skills they’ve learned.

Being able to perform the service and communicate with participants is a very positive experience for them.”

One minute after opening the screening session, LPN student Jay Dicecco and classmates Britteny Taylor of Eastport -South Manor CSD and Gabriela Giovinco of Middle Country CSD had a line of people waiting.

Golden Eagle The National Football Foundation has named Rocky Point High School senior Matthew Amoscato as one of Long Island’s 2013 Golden 11. Nassakeag Elementary School students celebrated this year’s Earth Day by participating in a variety of earth-friendly activities.

The sixth-grade students in Robyn Weinstein’s class once again coordinated a Waste-Free Lunch Week, which aimed to reduce the amount of waste created during the school’s lunch times. Leading up to the week, the sixth-graders made announcements and visited classrooms to inform their peers about the initiative and the ways in which they could participate. “We encouraged everyone to use reusable items for their lunch such as Tupperware and real silverware – basically

anything that doesn’t end up in the trash can,” said sixth-grader Colleen Loughlin. The school’s PTA also generously donated a $5 Barnes and Noble gift card to each class to help motivate the students to participate and some teachers, like Ms. Weinstein, doubled the gift cards as an added reward.

At the end of the week, the cards were distributed to one student per class based on his or her efforts.

On average, the school produces 10 garbage cans full of trash per day that weigh approximately 70 pounds each. As a result of the students’ collective efforts, during the weeklong project, the school only discarded 28

Honored For Civic Engagement cans, resulting in 1,540 less pounds of trash being produced at Nassakeag.

“It is up to us to control what happens in the future,” said sixth-grader Connor Tweedy. “Because of the environmental actions we take today, our future can either be a good or a bad one.”

The student council, which is advised by Adele Gibbons, also helped to clean up the earth as they coordinated the school’s annual Grounds Cleanup Day. Equipped with protective gloves and trash bags, the students walked the perimeter of the school and removed any waste items left behind.

Remembered as the unofficial mayor of Sound Beach, Margie was not only active in the Ladies Auxiliary, the Property

The students in R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s ninth-grade fashion and clothing class have put their sewing skills to a worthy cause this year, as they have created more than 60 mini-pillows for patients at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at Mather Hospital.

Based on size, the students’ creations assist those recovering from surgery while traveling in the car or when in need

of comfort. Working since early this year, the students have dedicated much of their spare class time to the cause.

“We are always looking for ways to connect our projects with a need found in the community,” stated teacher Cynthia Carrucciu, who has coordinated the effort for the past two years. “Last year we created approximately 60 pillows, and I’m proud that we have already surpassed that

amount this year. Sewing is skill that the students can use well into their future, and it is my hope that they will continue to find opportunities for philanthropic work even after this project is complete.”

Each of the completed pillows is not only stuffed with love, but also individual notes wishing the recipient a speedy recovery.

Career Day For the fourth- through sixth-graders at Nassakeag Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District, the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” became a little easier to answer following their participation in this year’s Career Day. The program, which was coordinated by teacher Judith Larson with assistance from the PTA and staff members, has been offered at the school for the past five years and grows in popularity with each new class.

“I believe today gave the

students a sense of what their parents may do for a living, as one of my student stated, ‘Now I get what my dad is talking about.’,” said Ms. Larsen. “It provided them with information on new career options and exposed them what other careers involve.

I can honestly say, the students were very surprised and intrigued at what they learned about the various careers presented.”

During the morning, the students had the chance to attend two interactive workshop sessions that featured 21 different types

of careers. Visited by professionals who work within the Three Village community and beyond, the students had the chance to learn about the training and education needed for professions such as a chef, acupuncturist/ chiropractor, bagel store owner/baker, hair stylist, oral surgeon, and even a filmmaker and radio show personality. Adding a special touch to the event, the school faculty and staff members wore apparel from the college they attended.

Bringing A Smile

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Eagle Scout recipient Michael C. Kelly from Troop 161 of Shoreham. His Court of Honor was on April 20th at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.

“Michael has proven to

be an outstanding leader within our community,” said Legislator Anker. “I would like to congratulate him on achieving Eagle Scout and thank him for creating such a wonderful project that benefits our neighborhood.”

Through Michael’s hard

work and determination, he completed numerous requirements for his Eagle Scout Award. His project consisted of laying down sod, planting a decorative sod scape, and placing down mulch at the Rocky Point Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial.

Legislator Sarah Anker welcomed the spring season by stopping by the Mount Sinai Heritage Park Smiley Face.

Legislator Anker recognized the efforts of the Mount Sinai Heritage Trust in stating, “The smiley face is a great expression of the positive spirit within our

community. Visitors can’t help but smile when they pass by.”

The smile, which is comprised of more than 3,500 daffodil bulbs, was planted during the fall 2010. The arrival of the daffodils has become an annual event that residents look forward to each year.

Volunteer Fred Drewes explained that the smiley has served as a way of uniting people of all generations, proving that both young and old can appreciate the planting and sharing in the joy of smiling back at the face.

Mr. Dragotta noted that the end-of-unit planting has become somewhat of a Minnesauke tradition, as his classes have been undertaking this project for the past 12 years. “It is a nice conclusion to our classroom studies and in a very visual way drives home many of the lessons that the students completed,” he said,

noting that it also serves as a community service project. “The students are excited to help beautify the school grounds in time for spring, and they feel proud seeing the flowers grow each day.”

The class’s parents provided the flowers and many of the supplies used during the project.

Earl L. Vandermeulen 10th-grader Ryan Burgert recently received a silver medal at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair finals competition for his project “Calculating the Sine and Cosine of Any Angle using Numeric Methods.”

Ryan first entered into the fair on March 26th at Suffolk Community College, where he presented his project

to various judges and competed against other Long Island students.

He then qualified for the finals, held on April 26 at Hofstra University, where he was awarded a silver medal.

“Ryan is very excited about his accomplishments, as am I,” said math teacher Winifred Kuemmel. “He is looking to pursue

another mathematical topic of interest for the upcoming fair next school year.” Hofstra University, the Suffolk County Mathematics Teachers Association, the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association and the Nassau County Association of Mathematics Supervisors sponsor the competition.

Legislator Anker recognized the members of the Mt. Sinai Fire Department at their Annual Installation Dinner held on Saturday, May 4th, at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point.

“It’s an honor to attend this celebration to honor our volunteers who put their lives at risk to help others,” said Legislator Anker.

“During the February blizzard, the Mt. Sinai Fire Department volunteers helped a constituent during a medical emergency. The

man needed to get to the hospital, but was unable to get out of his home. The firefighters were able to transport him on a sled to get him to a a waiting ambulance.
