You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time.

For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you.

And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never

worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch.

The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems.

But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes.

I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You

didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag?

I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint.

Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask.

If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything?

Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

If you have one hour a week for four to six weeks for training and can commit to one performance a month, we will train you in the art of Bunraku, or Japanese Puppetry. This is an opportunity to have fun working with children while promoting an atmosphere of kindness and tolerance in our community.

Inducting Student Artists the ceremony, which was held in the auditorium at Gelinas, current members addressed the audience to explain the criteria for admission into the NJAHS as well as the pillars on which the society was built.

Students who are members or are being

inducted must hold an art average of 95 or above and an overall average of 90. The groups at both buildings do countless service projects that bring art to the schools and community. The NJAHS is led by Dr. Laurie Mandel at Murphy and Michael Sacco at Gelinas.

Students Inducted

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inducted 19 Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from the Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead.

The criteria for students to be considered were nomination by a teacher, excellent attendance, and a 90+ grade average in their technical classes. As part of the ceremony, students participated in a candlelighting presentation to highlight the seven character attributes promoted by the National Technical Honor Society including: skill, honesty, service, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

NTHS is the acknowledged leader in the recognition of outstanding student achievement in career and technical

education. NTHS strives to honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, award scholarships, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership.

These students were selected by their physical education teachers for this recognition because they are role models in class and exemplify what the award stands for.

The leadership awards program, coordinated by the Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, honors two students graduating

from both fifth-grade and eighth-grade from each elementary and middle school in the county. The criteria for this award are based on three New York State Learning Standards, which include personal health and fitness, a safe and healthy environment, and resource management.

As winners, Tyler, Clare, Brian and Christine were honored during an awards ceremony at Longwood High School this May.

W.S. Mount Elementary School kindergarten through sixth-grade students had the chance to learn about a wide variety of interesting professions during the school’s annual Career Lab program.

From occupations in the medical field to areas of law enforcement and even environmentally focused jobs, this year’s In Rocky Point, there is a strong tradition for helping others. That tradition was most recently evidenced during Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School’s annual Mini-Relay For Life, a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.

More than 340 individuals, including students, staff and family members, joined the fight against cancer by participating in this walking event and helping to raise $12,019 for the cause. Leading the way in fundraising this year was third-grader Julia Darby, who singlehandedly collected $3,110 in donations.

“When I was diagnosed almost seven years ago, I vowed that I would do everything I could to bring awareness and raise funds so that no one else needs to hear the words ‘you have cancer,’” said event organizer and JAE physical education teacher

Maria Amoscato. “What better way to do that than to educate our future!”

She added of the school’s collective efforts, “I don’t think I will see a cure for the disease in my lifetime, but I surely hope that my students will. Hopefully one day, one of these dollars will make a huge difference.”

Before taking to the track in front of the school, participants met in the gymnasium for a kickoff event. The gymnasium was covered with banners creatively fashioned by each of the school’s classes – and figuratively blanketed with a real sense of hope for the future. In addition to a welcome address by Ms. Amoscato, attendees heard from teacher Mark Yashowitz, who shared how cancer had affected a member of his family.

Once outside, participants walked a track in the school parking lot,

and students earned white and purple beads to place on a necklace to record every mile walked. They also had the chance to take part in a variety of raffles hosted throughout the event. During the 90-minute walk, several students walked as many as eight or nine miles.

Over the past five years, the school has collected over $42,000 for this cause.

This year’s total of $12,019 was its highest to date.

The entire community will have a chance to help this worthy cause during the upcoming Rocky Point Relay For Life event, which will take place on the track at Rocky Point High School beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 7 and run until 6 a.m. on Sat. June 8.

The Compassionate Shepherd is a specially trained volunteer who may sit vigil or offer comfort and support to hospice patients at our Inpatient Center who are in their final hours of life. Hospice

Top Ranked Extending their awardwinning competition season, this year’s Ward Melville High School and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School Science Olympiad teams had one of their most impressive showings to date, as both teams placed among the top 10 teams in their divisions at the National Science Olympiad Tournament. During the contest, held this May at Wright State University in Ohio, Ward Melville was ranked fifth and Gelinas placed eighth. In addition to their overall ranking, Gelinas earned medals in four events (one gold, two bronze and one fifth-place medal) while Ward Melville won seven medals (two silver, one bronze, one fourth-place medal and three fifth-place medals) in this very competitive national tournament.

“It is truly a pleasure to be a part of the most talented Science Olympiad team in Ward Melville history,” stated Ward Melville coach Steve Malusa. “It was very exciting and gratifying to see all the hard work from this year culminate in the national tournament,” added Gelinas coach Gary Vorwald. “As a teacher and coach, you always want your students to strive for

PUBLIC SERVICE HONOREES - On May 24th, Senator Lee Zeldin presented Certificates of Recognition to the 27 students and three teachers from Eastern Suffolk Boces who recently helped Hagerman Fire Department Firefighter Ralph Lettieri, Jr. Ralph lost his left leg due to a flesh eating disease, just under a year ago. The students volunteered their time to upgrade his house and also donated Christmas toys to the Lettieri family.

COMMISSIONING CEREMONY - On May 26th, the Mount Sinai Yacht Club’s 50th Annual Commissioning Ceremony and Commodore’s Breakfast was held.

Traditionally, the yacht club invites elected officials and community leaders to participate in this time honored event, which this year fell during Memorial Day weekend.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Eagle Scout recipients Alexander Abrams and Kevin Anderson on Saturday, May 18th at the Miller Place High School. Both boys are members of Miller Place’s Boy Scout Troop 204.

“Our community is fortunate to have such dedicated young men,”

said Legislator Anker. “I commend their efforts whole-heartedly and wish them the best of success in their future endeavors.”

In order to obtain their Eagle Scout merits, Alexander and Kevin were required to complete a project. Alexander chose to oversee the restoration of educational kiosks in the Pine Barrens,

removing graffiti from the displays, replacing their broken fiberglass, and cleaning litter from the surrounding area. Kevin constructed a portable cabinet for the Port Jefferson High School’s drama department. The rolling cart will be used to transport props used by theater students.

Long Island residents gathered at Coopers Beach once again as Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) hosted its 7th Annual Kites For A Cure, on Saturday, May 25th, raising more than $50,000 for lung cancer research. From 4 to 6 p.m., participants braved the wind and rain to gather at the beach and kick-start the summer season in the Hamptons.

It’s a chance for the entire family to come out to beautiful Coopers Beach and celebrate the start of summer,” said Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton. “We are proud to host Kites For A Cure in Southampton each summer – it gives us the opportunity to bring families together and bring attention to the nation’s #1 cancer killer.”

Picture Tells A Story P.J. Gelinas Junior High School ninth-grader Fangrui Tong has been selected as a winner of Astoria Federal Savings’ 2013 Teen Photo Contest.

Fangrui’s photo was of her younger sister, whom she dressed and accessorized to meet the competition’s theme of “Culture and

Traditions.”

In recognition of her accomplishment, Fangrui and her art teacher, Mike Sacco, will attend an awards reception on June 12th at Astoria Federal’s headquarters in Lake Success, N.Y. At the reception, Fangrui will be presented with a certificate

and prize. Additionally, her photograph will be on display along with the other winning entries.

In recognition of the school’s support of arts education and Fangrui’s achievement, the P.J. Gelinas art department will receive a $100 classroom grant.

Distinguished Artists Based on their creative submissions, four W.S. Mount Elementary School students were named distinguished artists in The Portfolio Project: Art Students of Long Island, currently on display at the Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College. These students, which include fifth-graders Kiley Hamou, Cherrie Lan and Katherine Liu and fourth-grader Celine Owens, worked with art teacher Maria Maritato on their detailed applications.

For consideration in this year’s Portfolio Project, the students were required to create five pieces of artwork: a selfportrait, a research-based piece and three personal

choices using any medium.

Additionally, the students were required to draft written statements about their pieces and be prepared to speak articulately about their artwork using appropriate art vocabulary and terminology. The students practiced with Ms. Maritato prior to the portfolio adjudication this spring at Sachem High School East, where it was announced that their portfolios had received perfect scores.

The exhibit, which ran this May, was aimed at highlighting the finest work by Long Island art students. The organizers of this special exhibition are the teachers of the New York State Art

Teachers Association, a nonprofit professional organization founded in 1948 for the purpose of advancing the cause of art education. The Portfolio Project is an initiative of NYSATA that was developed in cooperation with the New York State Education Department. It is an authentic assessment tool that is based on the New York State Learning Standards and provides students with an opportunity to present portfolios of their work at regional adjudication sites.

The student portfolios provide evidence of understanding and student learning in the visual arts.

KITTEN SHOWER - On May 18th and 19th, Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. held its first-ever Kitten Shower. The inaugural event proved to be a success, as 22 kittens found loving, forever homes. Prior to the event, an online registry was set up in order to provide the kittens with much-needed pet care items.

At the shower, prospective adopters received tips and training techniques, and had the opportunity to meet and greet the shelter’s kittens in the new “nursery.” Save-A-Pet was also able to raise donations to cover the costs of spaying and neutering the kittens and providing them adequate food and shelter through this busy time of year.

CIVIC ASSOCIATION SERVICE - The Sound Beach Civic Association’s Memorial Day service was recently held at the Sound Beach Veterans Memorial Park. Many local residents, including veterans, scouts and members of the Sound Beach Fire Department also attended the event which featured music by Miller Place and Rocky Point High School students.

On Sunday, May 19th, Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Wading River community in celebration of Duck Pond Day. The celebration, held annually by the Wading RiverShoreham Chamber of Commerce, began with a 5K race in the morning, followed by a parade in the afternoon, and display booths set up by local business owners.

Day was also a special event for the three centurions who were recognized, Bea Sweeney, Irv Meyer, and Roy Laine.

“Duck Pond Day is a wonderful event,” said Legislator Anker.

“It’s a day that allows different groups to come together and celebrate the unique character of the community.”

Duck Pond Day was started by the local civic

associations as a part of the coastal cleanup effort, with members of the community working to restore the pond. After the work was done, volunteers and families would relax and enjoy a picnic lunch.

After the a few years of cleanups, a parade was added to the day’s agenda, and Duck Pond Day soon became a full day of festivities and celebration.

A Poet Is Born

part of a creative journal writing project.

Dylan quickly demonstrated his ability for writing poetry with a new inspiring poem each day.

So impressed by his talent and passion for writing, his teacher, Virginia Rios, recommended that Dylan submit his poetry for publication.

Under Mrs. Rios’ direction, Dylan entered his poetry in a contest.

Within a couple of weeks, Dylan was notified that his poem was accepted for publication.

Shortly thereafter, Dylan was presented with the extraordinary honor of having his poetry published in the book entitled, A Celebration of Poets by Creative Communications.

This publication proudly recognizes Dylan as an author.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Town of Brookhaven’s Senior May Rally on Friday, May 17th at the West Lake Inn in Patchogue. Entertainment, vendor exhibits, and a luncheon were enjoyed by over 100 seniors.

“Our seniors are such valuable members of the community,” said

Legislator Anker. “They provide guidance to our younger generations. As the Vice Chairwoman of Suffolk County’s Senior Committee, I will work to preserve the way of life our seniors cherish and advocate on behalf of their needs.”

The Town of Brookhaven’s Senior Citizen Division works

Prom Salon Held

A beautiful selection of brand new and gently used dresses, shoes, handbags, and other merchandise were available at the Prom Salon held at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead earlier this month.

The Prom Salon was the brainchild of the Adult Cosmetology Program students and their teacher Dorothea LoBiondo.

Word got out that they were asking for gowns, shoes, purses, and jewelry donations. Ms. LoBiondo

said, “It seemed like every day more items were being delivered to my classroom.

It was great.”

Over the course of the school year, the cosmetology students participate in a myriad of community services to elevate their skills and obtain needed hours to satisfy their New York State 1,000-hour requirement to take the licensing examination.

Ms. LoBiondo was pleased to share, “We had more than fifty young ladies come and try on gowns.”

The prom can be an expensive endeavor but some girls feel it is a monumental moment in their teen years. Ms. LoBiondo said, “We want to give girls the opportunity to join their peers and take the stress out of what should be a fun night.”

High school girls have the opportunity to come back to the Riverhead campus of ESBOCES and get their hair, nails, and makeup done for their prom. All salon services are being donated by the Adult Education Cosmetology Program.

Calling All Artists The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches.

Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be

displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th.

Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed in the Art Museum, along with the Coney Island and Jones Beach exhibition from September 12th through 29th.

The reception is free and open to the public.

For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment.

What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking.

Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment.

From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment.

But it isn’t all bad.

These children quickly learn the value of money.

It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner.

For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming.

The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me.

While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for

rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money.

Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work!

On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
