Recently, County Executive Bellone served as the keynote presenter at the June Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA) meeting held at the Holiday Inn located in Ronkonkoma.

Bellone took the opportunity to speak to the group about the state of the County and discussed pertinent initiatives and programs of the County.

Bellone’s talk focused on economic development and revitalization initiatives as well as measures enacted to address the fiscal issues of the county. Following the presentation, members engaged in a Q&A with the County Executive.

Ernie Fazio, Chairman of LIMBA stated, “The County Executive’s presentation was comprehensive and thought provoking

as it shed light on the complexity and depth of the myriad of issues he currently has to deal with and address. I thank him for his willingness to speak with our members and look forward to continued updates on the state of the County and the economic development initiatives being considered and implemented on a County level.”

So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think?

Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages.

If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough.

And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set!

Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations.

But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

As an extension of their social studies curriculum, fifth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District stepped back in time when they participated in an immigration simulation.

From the moment the students, who were dressed from head to toe as immigrants, stepped off the school bus and entered the building, they were transported to the early 1900s and were challenged to play the role of an individual immigrating to the United States.

Prior to the event, the students researched a family member who had immigrated to the United States and then created a fictional individual based on their research. On the day of the immigration

simulation, the students acted as that individual and embodied his or her persona.

“This annual event helps us reinforce the steps of the immigration process in a very tangible way, as we are allowing the students to experience it from the perspective of a 1900s immigrant,” stated teacher Janet VonBargen. “By acting as immigrants and filing through the process, the students gain a deeper understanding of not only this time in history, but also the experience their ancestors had when coming to America. It is a fitting conclusion to our classroom unit on the topic.”

Student Compositions Honored The beautifully crafted musical compositions of 11 Three Village Central School District students were selected for performance during this year’s Long Island Composers Alliance Annual Music By And For Students Concert at Hofstra University. The Alliance seeks to present the most outstanding compositions

by Long Island student composers under the age of 19. There were a total of 16 compositions featured at the concert.

Speaking to the significance of this honor, music composition teacher Dr. Dan Deutsch noted, “I am proud of all of the student composers for their achievement. The president of the Long Island Composers Alliance

told me that the decisions on the awards were especially difficult because all of the pieces were so excellent.”

Performing at the concert were students Katherine Barnitt, Emily Dana, Kieran McAuliffe, Maria Scutari, Madeleine Vaillancourt and Adora Zhang.

Adam Goldberg, Steven Holmquist and Elizabeth Wang won the further distinction of receiving Arline Diamond Memorial Awards for most outstanding compositions in their age categories.

They received cash awards and performed their pieces in an encore concert at the South Huntington Library.

Plain pieces of wood were transformed into wellconstructed birdhouses when Paul Wilgenkamp’s sixth graders at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District put math into action this spring. Given an oversized piece of uncut wood, the students were required to complete measurements and apply their knowledge of proportions to determine how to create a birdhouse based on plans of a different scale.

“Proportions is often one of the harder mathematical concepts for the students to grasp, and I felt this project employed a simple enough concept that really reinforced the challenging

subject matter,” stated Mr. Wilgenkamp. “In order to get to the final step – the assembling of the house – the students had to use a series of higher-order thinking skills and put the lessons learned in the classroom into action.”

Working independently, and with support from Mr. Wilgenkamp and school math lab teacher Colleen Maier, the students used rulers, protractors and compasses to figure calculations, which they transferred directly onto the wood. Based on their calculations, the students determined the length and width of the sides of the house, the circumference for the front entry hole, and the size of the base and

roof slabs. Once the “board of math” was complete, Mr. Wilgenkamp and parent volunteers Bill Beasley, Erik Dimech and Erik Pearson cut the boards into the birdhouse sections.

The students assembled their birdhouses in class and took them home in hopes that a local feathered friend would make it their new home.

“This was a great project that made math really fun,” remarked sixthgrader Jenna Dimech. “It really helped me improve my understanding of the things we were talking about in class and made me see how they apply to a real-world problem.”

Next Stop, Wall Street Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School’s fourth-grade students from Ken Krapf’s class and fifth-grade students from David Falcone’s class realized hefty gains when they competed in this year’s Stock Market Game. Performing in the Long Island fourth through sixth grade division, the students were given the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an online portfolio.

Working in teams, the students sought out opportunities to grow their initial investment over the course of a 10-week period and finished the game with some impressive financial profiles comprised of at least three stock options.

This year, not only did one Rocky Point team win the Long Island division, but they also had the best elementary portfolio in New York State. The Rocky Point School District

congratulates students Madison LoPresti, Haleigh Manger, Morgan Moroney, Brook Pohl and Kathleen Seda, who reaped $11,000 in profits.

The Stock Market Game, sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, reinforces classroom lessons such as critical thinking, economics and other financial concepts that students will use for the rest of their lives.

Winning Essays

After being moved by this September’s 9/11 assembly program featuring speakers from the FealGood Foundation, Rocky Point High School junior Joseph Russo and senior Serafina Tiranno-Cimisi entered the organization’s essay competition and were announced as winners this June. The students, who penned essays about the significance of the historic day and the important reasons why it should be remembered, were each given a $1,000 scholarship from the foundation.

“There was such a strong sense of nationalism in our country following 9/11, and although the events of the day were horrible, I think our country was stronger because of it,” explained Joseph, adding, “It brought

us closer as Americans.”

“My grade and the one after me are the last two that were in school when 9/11 happened, and I think because of that, we can more clearly remember that day than those younger than us can,” said Serafina, who will apply her scholarship to her studies at Hunter College this fall. “My essay focused on the volunteers who came to help and the important role they and the first responders played at that time. My aunt was someone who was deployed to Iraq right after 9/11, so I have a great deal of respect for those called to help.”

The FealGood Foundation’s primary mission is to assist first responders and any individuals who may have

been injured, physically or mentally, as a direct result of their rescue, recovery or cleanup efforts at the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Rocky Point was one of four schools on Long Island invited to submit to the foundation’s essay contest. Juniors and seniors entering the contest were required to write about one of three topics: their thoughts on the devastation in New York City following the 9/11 attacks; how the efforts of the volunteers showed united determination to help others; and the important reasons why there is a need for volunteerism or service to the country, and why that is vital in order to be a strong citizen.

Senior Honorees

Family, faculty, staff and members of the local community came together on May 30th to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School graduating class of 2013 at the annual Senior Awards Night.

More than 75 awards and scholarships were given to 61 seniors who had distinguished themselves in the areas of academic achievement, community service, leadership and citizenship during their four years.

The ceremony began with the awarding of local scholarships, which totaled more than $36,000. These scholarships were made possible by the generosity of local business, civic associations, unions, professional associations and individuals that support the school’s memorial awards.

Accolades continued with the presentation of achievement awards, including the New York State Attorney General Triple “C” Award, the Congressional Merit Award and the Official Army Reserve National Scholar/ Athlete Award.

Next, members of the faculty took the stage to present departmental awards to students who exceeded expectations in subjects

ranging from band to 3-D design. Students were also commended for their dedication and commitment during the citizenship awards portion of the evening.

The night concluded with the academic scholarship awards, which included Most Valuable Student, the Presidential Academic of Excellence Award, and the awarding of salutatorian and valedictorian of the Class of 2013.

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School valedictorian, Gabriel Davis, has a weighted GPA of 100.5.

He maintained this average while completing 28 Advanced Placement credits and will be attending Washington University in St. Louis, where he will major in political science. Gabriel also held positions as vice president of the senior class, captain of the New York State championshipwinning varsity soccer team and point guard for the varsity boys basketball team.

This year’s salutatorian, Zachary Graziano, has a weighted GPA of 99.57, which he achieved while earning a total of 29 AP credits. In the fall, Zachary will be attending Tufts University, where he will

study biochemistry. He also received recognition from the American Chemical Society for his outstanding scholastic achievement in high school chemistry, was captain of the high school academic team and completed an internship at Cold Spring Harbor, where he conducted neurological research.

“We have some outstanding women and men sitting in front of us,” said Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy in his closing remarks. “They are our future.”

CSI On The Scene

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School CSI Club competed in the 2013 CSI Challenge at Stony Brook University on June 3rd. The team, which placed 15th overall, had a unique opportunity to conduct a full-scale investigation of a fictional crime. Prior to the competition, students were required to read a story and look for investigative leads that would help them during the physical activities of the challenge.

“The competition itself consisted of a realistic, hands-on approach to experiencing what forensic scientists, detectives and other law enforcement agents do to solve crimes,” said team coach Adam Bouchard.

lift fingerprints, search, sketch and photograph crime scenes and match them to evidence, make casts of footprints, perform chromatography techniques, utilize computer forensics evidence and even interrogate possible suspects. They were also required to analyze bite marks, bones, ballistics, hair and fibers as well as toxicology and blood evidence.

During the competition, students collaborated by sharing evidence and their thoughts on who may have committed the crime. Eventually, the team came to a consensus and presented their investigation report to law enforcement agents, who acted as judges for the

third place in the National History Bee’s National Championship.

A total of 51 students nationwide qualified for the competition; only 32, however, were able to attend. Lucas was one of six students from the New York region who made it to the finals. Students were given curriculum-based questions centered on history and Common Core Standards. Fifty percent of the questions were based on world history and the remaining half on American history.

The competition was divided into two rounds and required participants to pass the first in order to advance. The first part

of the competition was comprised of five rounds totaling 30 questions.

Students were given time to interpret and analyze the question asked and then had 10 seconds to answer.

The top 10 students with the highest scores, which included Lucas, moved to the second round.

The remaining competitors went headto-head in a buzzer round consisting of 55 questions.

Lucas, the youngest of the top three competitors, was awarded third place.

The district congratulates Lucas on this incredible and outstanding accomplishment.

With the sun shining brightly, students at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District celebrated grade-level field days this June.

During the event, the students rotated through

a series of activity stations, each thematically named after a branch of the military. From the Army Hopper Race to an Armed Forces Carry All Relay, the students had fun celebrating the end of the year together.

To add to the spirit of the day, and as a reminder of the school’s commitment to character education, each class wore colorcoordinated T-shirts featuring the slogan “FJC Is A Bucket Filling School.”

Sigma Camp Sigma Camp provides an opportunity for children ages 11-15 for the kind of direct interaction with leading scientists that most students are never given. Only the lucky few chance to experience this, and much later in their college years.

Sigma Camp offers in-depth studies in the main area of interest as well as multiple opportunities to attend workshops and lectures on other subjects. In the evening, there are varied possibilities for socializing at campfires, board games, and discussions on such topics as art, history, origami, film, and others.

Of course, there is also plenty of time left to take advantage of summertime on our picturesque campus offering swimming and outdoor sports.

Most Sigma Camp instructors have been working together at an excellent weekend enrichment program of School Nova at Stony Brook University.

This program they created and successfully ran for the past nine years.

This is Sigma Camp’s

second year in existence.

The enrolment is at full capacity of 72 children with a waiting list. From the fist year’s alumni of 45 only two are not returning this year.

Each student had to complete a set of challenging qualifying tests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, which did nothing to discourage the aspiring young minds. Applications keep coming.

Sigma Camp runs for one week in June this year, and will likely be moving to the last week of August for next year. Children fly from other states and other countries for the opportunity to participate in the camp. Sigma Camp wishes to share the story of its wonderful atmosphere and inspiring learning experience with the public.

In a time when statistics show that 66 percent of the world’s illegal drugs are consumed in the United States, the Rocky Point School District has committed to doubling its already proactive efforts toward educating the community’s youth about the dangers of such behavior. During a recent planning meeting attended by district administrators, representatives from community support organizations, elected officials, parents and students, a wealth of information on the topic was shared and the planning of a fall “Drug Free” community forum commenced.

“It is important for as many people as possible to work together in order to convince our youth that the risks associated with drug use are not worth taking, and that they can make more positive alternative choices,” said meeting facilitator and high school Assistant Principal Susann Crossan.

“This initial meeting was scheduled with the goal of building relationships with all sectors of the community to help us with our work to prevent the abuse of drugs by our youth. We feel that by building upon our community’s strengths, we can reduce or eliminate many of the problems associated with drug use.”

During the meeting, attendees were informed

of the previous efforts the high school has taken with regard to the topic, as well as data obtained from a student assessment survey and focus group discussions conducted this spring at the middle and high schools. Among the past efforts discussed were the high school’s three-year participation in the Alcohol Coalition of Eastern Suffolk, which aims to reduce the incidences of underage drinking and drug use, as well as the creation of a Web page – LINKKS ¬– focused on Local Information Needed to Keep Kids Safe, classroom lessons, and a “Not on Your Life” campaign urging local businesses to sign a pledge to not sell alcohol or tobacco products to underage teens. With the help of North Shore Youth Council student assistance counselor Kristen Muratore, Family Service League representative Stephanie Sloan spoke about the survey results and focus group discussions, both of which provided pointed data about drug usage in the community – including what types are consumed, at what age the usage begins, and where in the community it happens – as well as the influencing factors for such behavior.

“When you look at the data, it is evident that this is a problem that is relevant globally as well as in our own

backyards,” said Board of Education President Michael Nofi.

“What makes our community unique is our willingness and drive to band together on issues such as this. I think tonight was a great start toward planning a meaningful event this fall.”

In addition to the district-based findings, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Kristin MacKay from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and Jennifer Serrentino from the Hope House Overdose Prevention Endeavor also addressed the crowd about the widespread issue of drug and alcohol use and abuse. Parents as well as students provided suggestions for the fall forum, a date for which will be announced shortly.

Celebrating Survivorship Nearly 300 cancer survivors, their families, friends and the doctors, nurses and other professionals who cared for them at Stony Brook University Cancer Center celebrated Stony Brook’s 9th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) on June 9th. Ethan Zohn, Survivor: Africa TV show winner, former professional soccer player, and a two-time cancer survivor, brought a message of perseverance to cancer patients.

“Cancer changed me, and I know it has changed you, and in the long-run that can be for the better,” said Zohn to fellow cancer survivors. “Living with cancer is part of your long-term survival.

Remember that living with and beating your disease makes you a true winner and survivor in life, which is not a game or a show.”

Zohn said he lost 32 pounds in 39 days in Survivor: Africa, but it is nothing compared to the survivor battle he is fighting against Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

He has had two stem cell transplants and has been in remission for 15 months.

“This is an important day for our patients, the doctors and staff at Stony Brook who work so hard to help cure them, and the entire community in our ongoing fight against cancer,” said Yusuf A. Hannun, MD, Director, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “The era of genomic medicine that we are now in is creating a kind of silent revolution in cancer medicine, in which new targeted therapies are increasing remission rates and minimizing adverse effects. Through collaborative research and clinical trials, Stony Brook Cancer Center specialists are developing new treatment approaches to help their patients and advance cancer medicine.”

Central to expanding cancer research at Stony Brook is Stony Brook Medicine’s plan to build a state-of-theart translational medical research building (MART) that will focus on cancer research, advanced imaging, and a

new cancer center. Projected to break ground in early 2014, the 250,000-square-foot-facility would be located on the Stony Brook Medicine campus where scientists and physicians would work side by side to research and discover new treatments and technology. The MART’s cancer care will triple Stony Brook’s capacity for outpatient services and enhance all cancer care for Long Island and beyond.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer survivorship continues to increase but cancer remains

the second most common cause of death in the United States and 1.6 million new cases are projected to occur in the U.S. this year. Stories of hope, however, from all age groups were reflected during the celebration at Stony Brook.

Samantha Fried, of Islandia, a 37-year-old breast cancer survivor and the Stony Brook patient speaker, relayed how she was shocked by her diagnosis at age 35. After undergoing a double mastectomy, she received additional treatment at Stony Brook. She persevered.

While undergoing treatment she attended Stony Brook University School of Nursing. Fried completed the program, received her RN degree, and recently passed

Hitting The Theatres Friday, June 7th kicks off the 64th year of The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program.

Movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours will head to local theatres to help benefit adult and pediatric cancer research and care at DanaFarber Cancer Institute.

Since 1949, volunteers have been passing collection canisters after the showing of a movie “trailer” about the Jimmy Fund at participating movie theaters.

The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays (evenings only), and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (days and evenings) from June 7th to

July 25th at participating National Amusements movie theaters in several states including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.

This year there are two new theatres participating in Massachusetts, the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and the Capitol Theatre in Arlington.

The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Over the past 64 years, the Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections program has raised $29,000,000 for Dana-Farber. In its early

years, the Theatre Program attracted the support of such stars as Jimmy Cagney, Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, and baseball legend Ted Williams.

Volunteers are needed to help collect contributions for the Jimmy Fund.

Volunteers receive T-shirts and possible other gifts like movie tickets, upcycled bags, or the chance to win Red Sox game tickets, depending on the time they commit to the program.

Joshua Sackstein, 23, of Fort Salonga, and a survivor of childhood leukemia, came to the event because he thought it would be moving to see and talk to other survivors at one setting. Attending the celebration, he said, helps him to continue valuing life at a young age and is inspiring him to find a way to give back and help others going through treatment.

“This day makes me thank God, all of my doctors and caregivers at Stony Brook, and really everyone who has joined this fight against cancer,” said Roy Romard, of Sayville.

The 56-year-old lymphoma survivor was treated at Stony Brook from the time he was diagnosed in 2007. He recently passed the five-year mark of being cancer free.

As a prelude to his celebrity guest appearance and message of perseverance at Stony Brook’s NCSD celebration, Zohn took his message personally to cancer patients in Stony Brook University Hospital on June 8th.

“I know it stinks to be in the hospital,” he told a group of pediatric patients gathered in the playroom at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “You’ve got to have trust in all these guys at the hospital, because they’re going to do all they can to make you healthy.”

“It was cool,” said five-year-old George Cochoy of Zohn’s visit. Cochoy and other children engaged Zohn in a rousing game of “Zingo!” in the playroom before each received an autographed neckerchief and photo of Zohn. He also distributed “headbands of hope” from an organization that supports the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds research for childhood cancer.

NCSD is an annual, worldwide celebration each June when hundreds of communities partake in a symbolic event to celebrate survivorship and life. For photos of Stony Brook’s 2013 event see this Facebook page.

Enviable Life Ball Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) held its largest fundraising event of the year, The Enviable Life Ball at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Thursday, May 30th.

Hollywood actor, producer and Commack native, Joe Sabatino, of the CBS series Vegas was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Over the past two decades, Joe has enjoyed a robust acting career in film and television. Recently, he partnered with Sony/ NBC Universal as CoExecutive Producer on “Necessary Roughness,” a sports drama on the USA

Network.

Joe Sabatino inspired the crowd with his touching words, “With all of the changes on the horizon for ACLD, we all must work together and support this mission. You have the power to make a difference in the future of ACLD.” In addition, Michael “Big Mike” Lynch, fourth place finalist on the ninth season of American Idol was a special guest, performing with Scott Raffa’s band, East Coast at this very important event.

More than 400 corporate leaders, government officials, families, friends and individuals with disabilities attended the ball. This exciting

evening included casino games, dancing, live entertainment, great food, valuable raffle prizes and lots more! The Enviable Life Ball raised more than $335,000, which will be used directly by ACLD to help individuals with developmental disabilities increase their independence and help them to lead enviable lives.

ACLD proudly honored Thomas A. Iadanza, First Senior Vice President of Valley National Bank with the 2013 Corporate Award.

Also, George Singfield, ACLD’s Education Consultant was also awarded with the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Suffolk County Inter-Faith Anti-Bias Task Force held its Annual Spring Convocation and Awards Ceremony on June 5th, honoring more than 30 students, educators and school groups from all over Suffolk County who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting the principles of human

rights, inclusion and equality within their schools and communities.

Over 130 people gathered at the legislative building in Hauppauge to recognize the impressive work and contributions of these individuals and groups. Task Force Co-Chair Rev. JoAnn Barrett spoke about the

importance of events such as these, stating that “They not only recognize the tremendous efforts of these students and educators but they bring people together from different parts of the County to exchange ideas and be inspired by each other to do even more good. The connections made at this past event

Awards Convocation were incredible.”

“I congratulate all of the students and school administrators who received recognition at Suffolk County’s Annual Anti-Bias Task Force Awards ceremony,” said County Executive Bellone.

“The devoted efforts of these students and educators in addressing the detrimental effects of racism and bias is to be commended and applauded.

Through their continued advocacy they are helping to make Suffolk County and our communities a better place to work and live.”

Within the last year, the Task Force has become a subcommittee of the

Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. In recognition of the Commission’s milestone, County Executive Steve Bellone designated 2013 “The Year for Human Rights.

Executive Director of the Human Rights Commission, Jennifer Blaske, stated, “The impact that students and educators have on their peers at school and in their communities cannot be overestimated, that is why it is so important for us to recognize, encourage and promote the outstanding work that these remarkable

individuals and many others are doing every day to make our schools, towns, county and world a better, more inclusive and safer place.”

“It is truly inspiring to take note and recognize the students, educators and schools who are making a difference in their communities and will make a difference in our world,” said Task Force CoChair and Human Rights Commission Chairperson Rabbi Dr. Steven A. Moss.

Stand Up For The Homeless The Long Island Campus of St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that it will provide a venue for the 6th Annual Stand Up for the Homeless event, sponsored by the Office of the Suffolk County Executive, on Friday, June 21st in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the fifth year the event will be held at the College.

The annual Stand Up for the Homeless event allows individuals in attendance to gain access to free services and products offered by a number of non-profit and government agencies, all in one location. Services that will be provided include health and dental screenings, housing and shelter placement, employment opportunities, free haircuts, a clothing

drive and public assistance counseling. The blood pressure and health screenings that were provided at previous events resulted in a handful of attendees receiving vital, immediate care they may have otherwise not received.

“The mission and fundamental goal of the Suffolk County Department of Social

Services is to assist each of our county’s most vulnerable residents with the tools and support they need to regain their selfsufficiency,” said Suffolk County Department of Social Services Acting Commissioner John F. O’Neill. “Stand Up for the Homeless personifies that mission, and we are proud to stand beside County Executive Bellone,

Last year, more than 250 volunteers came out to assist at the event and more than 75 organizations offered free services to over 500 individuals and families.

sweat and tears you put into everything that you do, the more life will pay off. There is no promise of money once you graduate.

The only hint that you are an overachiever is that diploma, so you had better be hard working! Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies.

So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
