It’s Easy...

Even eight months after Super Storm Sandy tore through Long Island, storm ravaged communities, such as Long Beach, are still in need of assistance. Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, has continuously driven efforts to aid disaster relief in these areas. Thanks to a generous donation from the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Island Harvest was able to hold a supermarket gift card distribution to aid people in Long Beach still struggling from the storms aftermath.

Over 300 people lined up on the sidewalks of Long Beach at last Monday’s gift card distribution. Of those who attended, 250 received gift cards while the next 120 received a disaster recovery food box, which provided a four person family with four

days worth of food.

“The overwhelming attendance at this event highlights the continued need for Sandy relief within Long Beach and surrounding communities” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest, “We are grateful to the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation for their generous donation and for recognizing our continued efforts to support those communities still affected

by Sandy.”

The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation was established by the late Cindy Silvian and makes grants to organizations involved in charitable purposes, including education, programs that benefit children, medical care and research, and Jewish philanthropic endeavors.

year, the Game Farm will host a Mini-Camp Zoo for children ages 3-5. This is ideal for campers who may not be ready for a full-day experience but love animals and making friends their own age. They will have the opportunity to explore the Game Farm and meet the interesting and friendly animals, make a project, share a smile, cuddle or pet the animals and learn about the many creatures here in Manorville. Registration for Camp Zoo is $425 per week for new campers and $375 per week for returning campers. Those between the ages of 12 and 14 and who have attended at least one week of Camp Zoo may become a Junior Camp Zoo Counselor.

July 29th-August 2nd: Camp Zoo Carnival (ages 4-12) — Children will take part in fun and games inspired by a carnival theme as they join the Game Farm staff in bidding farewell to the summer until next year. They will also create special projects and learn about the Game Farm’s favorite four-legged friends while enjoying some popcorn and other treats, for an animal sendoff, Game Farm-style!

At the end of the week, all campers will receive a Camp Zoo T-shirt and a personalized CD containing photographs of their experiences at Camp Zoo. For the first time, this

For the ninth year in a row, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is hosting its Camp Zoo, consisting of three one-week sessions for children ages 4-12.

Sessions run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This season’s sessions are as follows: July 15th-19th: Wild World of Animals (ages 4-9) — It’s not always being green, spotted, striped or camouflaged.

Children will learn about the many wonderful friends the Game Farm staff care for, as well as weird and quirky tidbits about each of them.

They will also learn about the natural habitats, find out their special likes and dislikes, and create special keepsakes and memories that will last all summer long!

Summer Workshops Set and ecology, and chess to more than 60,000 students ages 6 to 18 in its 46- year history, presented the first New York State-wide Music Educator Technology Conference on Long Island.

Other workshops have covered “Differentiated Instruction and Rubrics” and “Choral Conducting: Connecting Music and Literacy,” taught by distinguished vocal music educators. The Center has offered dance workshops, including Vibrant Curricula and Ballet Technique for Jazz Dance Teachers taught

by Usdan’s Dance Chair and former Joffrey Ballet School head, Maurice Brandon Curry. Usdan also originated Long Island’s first Canadian Brass summer workshops, hosting two years of 3-day programs attended by music educators from across the country.

Topics to be covered during this summer’s workshop include the use of Finale for music notation entry, techniques for producing score and parts, the use of Finale in creating original

A certificate of completion will be provided at the end for inservice credit.

David Dolgon, a clinician for MakeMusic! (creator of Finale), has taught graduate courses for the College of New Rochelle and at Queens College. He has presented staff development workshops for the Nassau Country chapter of the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education, and for school districts and county organizations in New York and New Jersey. He taught band and music theory at Syosset High school, and has been a member of Usdan Center’s clarinet faculty.

The fee for this summer’s Finale workshop is $400.

The Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) will hold its 16th annual installment at the historic Bellmore Movies from July 17th through 25th. Showing 146 films from around the world, LIIFE will showcase movies from 18 countries with 36 of the films having Long Island ties and 35 more hailing from New York in general.

“Nassau County has always been a supporter of independent and studio films, and it’s our pleasure to bring this type of entertainment and cultural opportunity to our constituents,” states Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.

“LIIFE also provides an opportunity for filmmakers to come and see the types of filming locations Nassau County has to offer whether it be our beaches, mansions, suburban areas and, of course, Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios, which are all NYS approved movie studios which qualify for the much sought after 30% tax credit.”

“What makes LIIFE such an important film festival,” states Nassau County Film Office Director, Debra Markowitz, “is not

only that we bring rare short and feature-length independent films to the public, but that LIIFE has fostered a growing film community.

Filmmakers from around the world apply and return year after year meeting old friends and finding new contacts to work with. From local to foreign filmmaker, casting director to actor, producer to director and so on, many lasting connections are made every year.”

“What’s different is that we actually have three Westerns at this year’s LIIFE,” states Markowitz. “We also have a horror block on Saturday, July 20th at 9:15 p.m. That’s becoming a yearly standard.”

The festival begins with a traditional film festival warm-up on Wednesday, July 17th, and kicks into high gear on Friday, July 19th with the opening night feature, Wet Behind the Ears, by past LIIFE winner Sloan Copeland. The late Friday block is anchored

by Fred Carpenter’s Send No Flowers starring Sean Young, Tony LoBianco, Robert Clohessy and Gianni Russo.

Besides the USA, this year’s films come from

France, Belgium, Israel, the Netherlands, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, Poland, Serbia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Africa and Canada.

LIIFE also has panels on scriptwriting, film distribution and financing, a filmmakers breakfast panel, and an opening night reception.

The closing night party and awards ceremony celebration complete with a buffet, celebrities, winners clips and filmmakers from all over the world will be held on Thursday, July 25.

This year’s honorees include William Sadler (Iron Man 3) and Ally Sheedy (Breakfast Club). Presenters include Federico Castellucio (The Sopranos) and Robert Clohessy (Blue Bloods) with more signing on daily.

Celebrities appear schedule permitting, and the lineup could change before the festivities.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), the nationally renowned summer arts day camp, has long presented unique summer workshops on the latest techniques for arts educators. This summer, Usdan will present Finale: A Vibrant Tool For Today’s Music Educators.

The workshops will take place from July 8th-11th (Monday to Thursday) and again from July 15th-18th. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12 noon daily at the Center’s 200-acre Long Island campus in Wheatley Heights (Town of Huntington.) Donation Presented On June 6th, the Harbormen Chorus proudly presented their annual donation of the money collected from various performances throughout the year at the Good Shepherd Hospice Inpatient Center in Port Jefferson.

this donation is just the latest contribution in a long-standing relationship between the communitybased group and Good Shepherd Hospice.

The Harbormen Chorus has contributed more than $12,000 over 15 years to support the mission of Good Shepherd Hospice.

The U.S. State Department’s American Music Abroad program recently selected the unique group, The Amigos Band, for a five week international tour of musical ambassadorship.

But before the band sets out on its worldwide mission of musical goodwill, they’ll be featured at The Woodlands Folk Festival in E. Setauket on June 29th.

The festival runs from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and offers festival goers a lineup of outstanding music.

The Amigos Band is a three person collective dedicated to performing and creating American music through the traditions of collaboration and improvisation. They were chosen to appear in the premier showcase at the 2012 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference and are featured on the first American Folk Art Museum album.

Jacobs and the Soul Fire Revival. Woodlands 2013 is also holding its first Open Song Competition, an Open Mic and two singalongs, one focused on the Beatles and one on classic folk songs. Science Teacher Of The Year

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School science teacher and school science department chairman Gary Vorwald has been named the 2013 Middle School Level Science Teacher of the Year Award winner by the Suffolk County Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. This award is given to teachers who have been nominated by their administration, colleagues or other science professionals.

Eileen Gerle, a Brookhaven Town environmental educator, nominated Mr. Vorwald based on his commitment to education and for providing experiences for his students to conduct science in the field.

Mr. Vorwald started his teaching career in 1986 at Island Trees Public Schools, after working for several years as an exploration petroleum geologist. For the last 16 years he has taught earth science, eighth-grade physical science, science research and seventh-grade science at Gelinas, while also serving as the science department chairman.

In addition to his teaching and leadership roles at Gelinas, Mr. Vorwald is the head coach of the school’s Science Olympiad teams, a role he describes as his most successful and rewarding experience. Mr. Vorwald devotes countless hours to the program, leading the school’s five teams, which encompass 75 members.

Under Mr. Vorwald’s leadership, this program has advanced to compete

at the state and national levels for the past 10 years.

As a lifetime learner, he has always endeavored to continue his professional growth.

One such opportunity was his participation in a field program on the Juneau Icefield in Alaska. Besides gaining first-hand knowledge about glacial geology and glaciology, he developed learning activities that he’s shared with colleagues and teachers throughout the state.

Seeking to share best practices, Mr. Vorwald has also served as an earth science mentor for the New York State Education Department as well as a local BOCES. He has been very involved in STANYS, serving at both the statewide and section levels. His service in the Suffolk Section has included section chairman, secretary, vice president for programs and newsletter editor. He represents the Suffolk Section at the state level as a Board of Directors member and is currently the chair of the STANYS Fellows committee.

Drawing on his experiences with the award-winning Science Olympiad Gelinas team, he shares his expertise with colleagues by presenting each year at the annual Science Olympiad coaches workshop, and he serves the state organization as an event writer and supervisor.

instructor at a threeweek summer enrichment program at Stony Brook University for 30 gifted high school students from around the state, and has created a class titled “Science Olympiad Adventures” to nurture young middle school scientists as part of the district’s enrichment program.

A hallmark of Mr. Vorwald’s approach in delivering science to his students is providing them with field experiences.

He’s integrated inquiry activities into his curriculum that utilize the investigation of features around the school and within the community. He developed and organized a trip to Niagara Falls, which brought hundreds of students to upstate New York to witness nature’s forces firsthand and collect fossils and minerals. He has facilitated Astronomy Nights during which a state-of-the-art telescope, purchased via a district grant, is used to view the nighttime sky.

Regarding Mr. Vorwald’s work with the Three Village Central School District, Superintendent of Schools Cheryl Pedisich said, “His teaching and leadership experiences throughout his career have distinguished him as an exceptional teacher and dedicated and passionate educator, who serves as a mentor to both students and staff.” She went on to note, “Mr. Vorwald serves the children, community and staff of Three Village with skill and dedication.”

Healing Heart 5K

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk, sponsored by East End Cardiology was held on Sunday, May 20th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. Despite the poor weather, more than 900 runners, walkers and spectators came out to participate in the much anticipated event.

Following the race, event emcee, Rich Hoffman, News 12 Meteorologist, presented to the top male and female runners along

with the top runners in various age categories.

Those in attendance were then treated to music by Rum Hill Rockers and Out East. A health expo was also available during the event and was open to all participants.

The event raised over $80,000. Special thanks to all the donors, participants and volunteers, especially East End Cardiology, NJROTC and the Tortorella Group for supporting the American Heart Association and helping with all the day of event logistics.

The Healing Heart 5K

hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together.

Golf Classic Set On Monday, July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its third annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club on 483 West Main St., in Huntington.

The price is $2,000 for a foursome. That includes brunch, a round of golf, cocktail hour and dinner.

For dinner only (no golf), the cost is $175 per person.

All proceeds from the event will go towards ADRC and The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice

President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Last year, the event successfully raised over $127,000 towards Alzheimer’s research and treatment.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start.

The cocktail reception will start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, a program, trophies and raffles.

Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease

advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products.

Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice.

Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real

one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it.

I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened.

He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll.

Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.

Who knew!

And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him.

Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later.

What a shame.

I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

Living History

Complete silence fell over the library at Nassakeag Elementary School when Holocaust survivor and author Ruth Minsky Sender spoke to the school’s entire sixthgrade about her individual experiences during one of the most troubling times in world history.

Ms. Minsky Sender, who is also the grandmother of two students in the school,

described how the dreams she had for her future came to a halt following the German invasion of Poland, where she was born. The heart-wrenching stories she shared – from the loss of her family to the day her oldest friend became a Nazi soldier – painted a clear picture of this devastating part of the history that the students had been studying in class.

Addressing the importance of her message, she said, “We must never forget what happened.

I want the students to understand that being indifferent can be just as bad.”

At the end of the program, each student received an autographed copy of Ms. Minsky Sender’s first book “The Cage,” now in its 30th printing.

Moving Up Ceremony

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Second Grade Moving Up Ceremony at the Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School on Friday, June 14th. The ceremony recognized the second grade students who will be moving on to the Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in September.

“It’s important that you continue to keep up the good work,” Legislator Anker said to the second graders. “Remember all of the lessons that your teachers taught you here at the Carasiti School.

There are also wonderful teachers at the Joseph A. Edgar School, and I know that are they very excited to meet you.”

The Frank J. Carasiti School serves the youngest grades in the Rocky Point school district, educating students from kindergarten through second grade.

According to the Rocky Point District Office, the school will be sending 248 second graders to the third grade at the Joseph A. Edgar School in the fall.

Taking The Next Step

Surrounded by family, friends and teachers, the ninth-grade class at R.C. Murphy Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District took a ceremonial step into their futures when they took part in this June’s moving-up ceremony.

“From your first day of seventh grade, it was clear to me that you would be a group that would set the standard for what we expect from our students,” Principal Vinny Vizzo said to the ninth-graders.

“Seeing you grow over the past three years, I am certain that we as a school and community have created a successful future for you. Now it is up to you to continue on that path.

I wish you all every bit of success, not only as you journey to Ward Melville High School, but in every endeavor you choose for

your future.”

During the ceremony, members of the teaching staff presented departmental awards and Assistant Principal Kevin Finnerty announced the winners of this year’s Presidential Academic Fitness Award. Mr. Vizzo oversaw the presentation of Character Achievement Awards and teacher Brian Pickford congratulated the recipients of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Complementing the evening’s program was a musical interlude, directed by vocal teacher Anthony Pollera. As the words of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” filled the gymnasium, the strong bonds of friendship that exist within the graduating class became evident. In keeping with tradition, the Murphy Class of 2013 left behind a gift for

future generations to enjoy – the beautification of the school’s garden located near the library.

Reflecting on the personal connection he has with the class, Mr. Finnerty noted in his closing remarks, “Some of you might not know this, but three years ago it was not only your first day here at Murphy, it was mine as well. We have grown and matured together, navigating the ups and downs of junior high life.

I have enjoyed greatly my experience with you and know that a bright future is ahead.”

Turning the page to the next chapter of their lives, the Murphy Class of 2013 proceeded out of the gymnasium eager to begin September as the Ward Melville High School Class of 2016.

SCOUTS CELEBRATE FLAG DAY - On June 14th, the annual Flag Day Celebration was held at North Shore Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. Among those in attendance were Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts from the Three Village, Mount Sinai and Miller Place communities who participated in a number of activities, including a march around the park, speeches, a scavenger hunt, food collection for the Rocky Point VFW and flag folding. The Scouts also had the opportunity to interview Councilwoman Jane Bonner and County Legislator Sarah Anker in order to earn a merit badge.

Eighth-grade students at Port Jefferson Middle School recently participated in the school’s annual Field Day, organized by physical education teachers Dinarae Camarda, Andrew Cosci,

James Mimnaugh and Alycia Petitto.

The day began with a barbecue lunch provided by the Parent Teacher Student Organization. The students were then divided into five teams which

competed in several events to decide the day’s winner, including kickball, tail tag, tug of war, and various track events.

The white team, led by Dr. Tara Sladek-Maharg, came in first place.

Horton Hears The Who

The Scraggy Drama Club of Edna Louise Spear Elementary School performed Horton Hears The Who! on May 31st.

The club, comprised of fourth- and fifth-grade students, rehearsed for two months leading up to the performance, which combined the popular children’s story with music

made famous by the band The Who. Based on the Dr. Seuss book by the same name, the play tells the story of Horton the Elephant and his discovery of a community of miniature people called the Whos.

The student-actors took the audience through colorful scenes from the

book that included the town of Whoville and the Jungle of Nool.

The driving moral of the story, “a person’s a person, no matter how small,” was reinforced throughout the play in Horton’s various attempts to convince the other jungle animals that the microscopic Whos really do exist.

Heroes Come To Life

Several of the more influential individuals from the Revolutionary War came back to life this June when Kara Gorski’s fourthgraders at Minnesauke Elementary School took part in a Revolutionary War Wax Museum. As a conclusion to their studies on the period, the students selected a hero or heroine from this important era in American history, completed a research project on their life, and embodied that individual during a classroom wax museum.

On the day of the exhibit, the students, dressed as the individuals they had researched, remained still until a visitor tapped their desk to make them “come to life.” Once awakened, they delivered a speech from the viewpoint of their researched subject, including an overview of their family life and the important role they had played in the American Revolution, as well as other interesting autobiographical facts.

“The students are always excited about this project,”

said Ms. Gorski, who has coordinated the effort with her classes for the past eight years. “They are able to make connections with these individuals that they may not otherwise make. It enhances their understanding of not only their chosen person, but also those selected by their classmates.”

This year’s museum featured individuals significant on a national level as well as those more locally based.

Court of Honor ceremonies for Dean Routi and Patrick Vitale of Boy Scout Troop 70 of Setauket were recently held in recognition of their attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

For his Eagle project, Dean built a memorial

garden around an existing flagpole in front of the Three Village Historical Society Headquarters on North Country Road. The garden includes two handmade benches, various native plants and flowers, and a layer of mulch.

Honoring Flag Day

To culminate an extensive study of ancient and present-day Egypt, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students in Doreen Marullo’s third-grade class assembled their very own Egyptian museum.

The “MOMA” (Museum of Marullo’s Authors) was created to showcase the beautiful writing and artwork the children had produced over the past two months. Their work

included poems, research papers, recipe books, a fashion magazine, games, maps, a brochure, buttons, jewelry, Rosetta Stones, burial chambers, Egyptianstyle paintings, music videos and more.

“This fun and exciting hands-on history lesson has also helped the children to develop efficient computer research skills and has enhanced their ability to write about specific

topics,” said Marullo.

Several members of the staff worked tirelessly to assemble the exhibit, which included an 8-foot tall pyramid, a candle-lit “tunnel” decorated with hieroglyphics and a burial chamber featuring its own mummy. The art and music departments also collaborated with Marullo in creating some of the art projects and music videos.

On Friday, June 14th, Legislator Sarah Anker joined local girl scouts and boy scouts and Heritage Trust volunteers for Flag Day at North Shore Heritage Park. The annual celebration, known to locals as Parade of Flags, is a display of over 100 flags, flown in honor of

the growing history of the United States.

“Flag Day is a time to honor the nation’s history and heritage,” said Legislator Anker. “I’d like to say thank you to all of the volunteers who participated in this event and helped to promote pride for our nation.”

The display included Old Glory, state, local, and Armed Forces flags are to exhibit the development of our country. Flag Day was officially established on June 14th, 1916 in celebration of the original American flag, which was adopted in 1777.

The third annual Senior and Alumni Recall Revue at Ward Melville High School was a resounding success and attended by many in the community.

Featuring the vocal talents of 25 students from the Class of 1997 through this year’s graduating seniors in the Class of 2013, the event served as a fundraiser for next year’s school musical, Beauty and the Beast. While several of the performers were on summer break from college, the most senior alumna, Kelly Waters from the Class of ‘97, volunteered while on break from her performances in the national tour of “Sister Act.” Directed by music teacher Linda Contino, the production featured the alumni performing several of the songs they had originally sung

“Collectively, they share a drive that pushes them to ensure their students’ success.”

Brucella, a special education teacher in the high school and middle school, has taught various preps that range from being a resource room teacher to a subject area inclusion teacher in a classroom to a learning support teacher of students in a small setting.

She is also the junior class adviser. Moran, an English language arts teacher for grades 7-12, has worked in various capacities for the school district, including junior class adviser.

Mathematics and special education teacher Vaccaro works in both the high school and middle school

and is the Leo Club adviser.

Susan Federico, the middle and high school nurse, also received tenure and was thanked by Santana for her continual efforts.

The meeting proceeded with the recognition of teacher’s aide Susan Kempe, who has resigned for the purpose of retirement. “Sue is always there with a smile, no matter what it is she is doing,” said Santana, who works with Kempe at the middle school on a daily basis. “She has been a great resource that we are truly going to miss.”

Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert then spoke about science teacher Laurie McMillen, who has also resigned for the purpose of retirement.

During the 33 years McMillen has worked in the district, she has

served in many capacities, including co-adviser of the Academic Team, class adviser at all grade levels, co-adviser of the National Honor Society, Student Council adviser and head of the science department.

Additionally, she has worked with the school’s Odyssey of the Mind and Science Olympiad teams as well as the SCIMATECH club. “She is leaving at the top of her game as a master instructor who has done wonderful things with our students,” said Bossert. “I know that they will reap the benefits of working with her for many years to come.”

The board then acknowledged the dedication and commitment of departing trustee Dr. Dennis Kahn, who has been a member of the board for nine

years. “His priority has always been what is best for our children,” said Board President Kathleen Brennan. Kahn, who is also president of the Infant Jesus Basketball Program, took the opportunity to publicly thank the board for their continued support of the league.

“The cornerstone of the program has always been Port Jefferson,” said Kahn, who also commented on how remarkable education through sports is. “Without you, these children’s lives would not have been touched. It is so important to give children the opportunity to excel.

You never stand as tall as when you reach out to help a child.”

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior class president Gregory Klesaris was next recognized for his

comprehensive reports to the board throughout the school year as the Board of Education student representative. “You have devoted a great deal of time and effort to the board and have represented your peers in a very nice way,” said Brennan.

To conclude the acknowledgments, Acting Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Carmen Iannotti was thanked for his service to the district. “Carmen is probably best known in Suffolk County as the leading authority and top resource in the area of special education,” said Bossert. “In the year that you have given yourself to this district, you have done wonderful things that have touched so many students and faculty members in a positive way.”

As June comes to a close, thousands of Long Island’s students will be flocking to the beaches instead of to the classrooms.

The end of June customarily signifies the end of the school year. With the end of the school year comes herds of teens with nothing scheduled to do all day. These newly freed kids will go to the beach in search of a little relaxation to unwind from yet another stressful school year.

As the last bell of the year tolls, many local high schoolers will beeline straight for Long Island’s coast. After my final test, the Chemistry Regents, my friends and

I hopped on the ferry to Ocean Beach and spent some time enjoying the sand, the sun and the surf.

It was nice just to forget about studying, about stress, and about doing our homework.

The realization that we had just begun our three month relaxation period had finally started to set in. While playing in the water with my closest friends, we felt happy to be done with school.

The pressure put on children from school magically disappears as you leave the classroom for the last time for almost 100 days. On that final day, the only worry one feels is whether or not they have a ride to

the beach. Here on Long Island, the beach is a Mecca for teens. With no worries about school, we are free to enjoy our downtime and finally let loose.

As my friends and I exemplified, the primary goal of June - September shouldn’t rest upon education; it should rest upon relaxation.

The precious little time you have to unwind is important to students.

Everyone needs some time to just “shut your brain off” and get into the “summer mindset.”

The end of the school year is a time that enables teens to have fun, relax and hang out with friends.
