Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms.

While “easy” is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.

When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Paint Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. Cavernous bathrooms that look empty may prove more inviting with darker hues. Pick a paint that is designed for bathroom application so that it will inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

National Honor Based on their stellar Preliminary SAT scores, 17 Ward Melville High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically talented seniors will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $35 million.

To qualify for these scholarships, the students must first advance in the competition as finalists, a designation which will be announced in February.

According to the

Solemn Silence Gathered outside the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Suffolk Aviation Academy in Shirley, students observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Principal Janet Kiley read a poem by Dr. Cheryl Sawyer titled The Power of One. The poem is powerful: “As the soot and dirt

and ash rained down, we became one color, one class, one generation, one gender, one faith, one language, one body, one family, one soul, one people. We are the power of one. We are united. We are America.”

As they stood reflecting on the message of the poem, Principal Kiley implored the students to “help each other; reach out

and help someone. You can make a difference.”

Nicholas Lemorrocco, a Hampton Bays school district student said he “was honored and felt proud” carrying the American flag to the ceremony. He said, “Several of my family members are commanding officers in the Air Force.”

He wants to follow in their footsteps.

Students Named AP Scholars The Three Village Central School District is pleased to announce that 286 Ward Melville High School students have been named Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. Students earn this honor – which is divided into four categories – based on the number of AP exams taken and their average scores.

This year, 29 students earned the highest honor of National AP Scholar, as they received an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or

more of these exams. A total of 131 were named AP Scholars with Distinction, as they received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and a score of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Forty students were given the distinction of AP Scholar with Honor, as they received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Eighty-six students were named AP Scholars, as they received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

The completed pieces, which are meant to inspire students as they begin their journey of self-discovery,

are on display in the main lobby of the school.

Keeping with the theme of the event, students and staff members also helped to mark Dot Day by wearing polka dot-inspired clothing to school.

This year’s international celebration drew more than 1 million participants from 82 countries.

Ward Melville’s AP program currently boasts 24 courses spanning such subjects as foreign language, world history, and advanced and social sciences, as well as music and the arts. These courses engage students in intense discussions, problemsolving concepts and collaborative activities. Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead.

Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season.

• Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort.

Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers.

Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well.

Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives.

• Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold.

• Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water

and fertilizer can reach the soil.

• Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will feed the lawn all winter long.

• Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to re-edge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less

• Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services.

• Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth.

Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.

Many times it is to a homeowner’s advantage to open the drapes and let sunlight shine in. Still, for shift workers, parents of young children who need to nap or just those who have south- or west-facing windows that make rooms overly warm, darkening the room is necessary at certain times of the day.

The easiest and most effective way to do so is to purchase blackout curtains. Depending on the brand and quality of the curtains, some of them may block out sunlight entirely while providing additional benefits.

While preventing sunlight from entering a room, blackout curtains, which are thicker than traditional curtains, may also be effective at insulating rooms against drafty windows and providing noise reduction.

Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families.

Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event.

This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined

forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family.

Jeff, a 46 year-old, nonsmoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do.

Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is incredible,

and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination.

Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that.

What a difference one week can make, right?

I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.)

But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties.

Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all...

Part of the beauty of living on Long Island is that we are fortunate to experience all four seasons – may as well start enjoying them. There will always be something to look forward to, somewhere else you would rather be … but there’s still nothing quite like the here and now.

Fall Fun Coming The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 14th.

The Game Farm is partnering with Natural Earth Farms who will provide a pumpkin patch and farm stand. There will also be craft vendors and special activities, such as face painting, a kiddie hay maze, pumpkin slingshot, pony rides and corn target sponsored by Hurricane Grill & Wings. Anyone who

hits the bull’s eye will win five free wings courtesy of Hurricane Grill & Wings.

Seasonal refreshments will be on sale, including hot cider, hot chocolate, hot dogs, corn dogs on a stick, funnel cake, french fries and candied apples.

Some of the animals are moved offsite into warmer quarters and will not be here during the fall. But if the weather stays warm, visitors can see the giraffe, monkeys and lemurs. If the weather gets colder, there are still lots of other animals and activities to enjoy, including handfeeding the llamas, bottlefeeding goats and sheep and Bambiland, where adults and children can hand-feed the deer. The zebra, cougar, ostrich, and buffalo can be fed through a feed tube. It’s fun to watch them eat!

There will also be daily Surprise Animal Guests where visitors can get up close and personal,

learn and take photos.

Some animals include the alligator, tortoise, bunny, a silky chicken, and more!

Admission is $16.95 for adults, $14.95 for children ages 3-11.

This summer, I was given the opportunity to compete at the American Legion Boys’ State Program. For around 1,100 of Long Island’s most promising leaders, this week away from our parents was a big deal.

Even though I was rejected from my first application for the program, I did not lose hope.

I was soon referred to Mr. Marco Calise, one of the Vice Presidents of the Police Association of Suffolk County. He had faith in me. At one of their meetings, the board, as well as the entire group, debated upon many boys vying for the position.

A hush fell over the auditorium at Rocky Point High School as members of the Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 presented the nation’s colors, symbolizing the start of this year’s 9/11 remembrance ceremony.

As has become tradition at the school, the building’s 11th- and 12th-grade students marked this year’s anniversary with a solemn ceremony featuring student performances of The Star-Spangled Banner, America The Beautiful and Taps, as well as several keynote speeches.

Throughout the program, speakers addressed how the events of 9/11 affected both the local and global community.

Program coordinator Richard Acritelli noted that the school district lost four alumni on 9/11, the highest number in the surrounding area, and

Brooke Bonomi spoke about the four individually.

West Point graduate John Fernandez (Rocky Point Class of 1996) shared how he was severely wounded in Iraq in 2003 and described his current work with the Wounded Warriors Project.

Dennis Fecci, who has worked for every New York City mayor from Lindsay to Bloomberg, discussed how his team was responsible for creating and organizing the communication center after the 9/11 attacks on New York City.

In addition to the speakers, Tommy Sullivan – Long Island Music Hall of Fame honoree, founding member of the original Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge and former member of the West Point band – performed emotional renditions of God Bless The USA and Let It Be. The video Boatlift,

narrated by Tom Hanks, was also shown to explain the marine and river exodus of over 500,000 people on 9/11.

Thomas Strazzeri, president of the senior class and Varsity Club, gave an address towards the program’s conclusion. “In times of national hardship, such as those faced after the attacks, heroism and courage are displayed,” he said. “Heroes, such as the individuals seated before us, put their lives on the line [and] in harm’s way to protect the people who were in danger…On behalf of my peers, I would like to thank you all for your service and the honor you have brought to our country.”

Project SEARCH was developed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and has grown to over 200 sites across the United States.

The partnership with ESBOCES and Medford Multicare is the only one on Long Island.

During the first week of school, parents were invited to an informational meet-and-greet-dinner at Medford Multicare, along with staff members from ESBOCES. Medford Multicare Administrator David Fielding said, “No one knows what we are capable of doing, until we try. This is a highly selective program and we want the students to develop the skills they need to be successful. We know that in June 2014, this

will be the first graduating class of Project SEARCH from Medford Multicare and ESBOCES.” Hunter Sola’s father Jose is very excited for his son.

The family resides in the Three Village CSD. Mr. Sola said, “He gets up early and takes the Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) bus every day.

Hunter wants to succeed and be independent.

There’s nothing else like this program. Project SEARCH will give him the tools he needs to succeed.”

For the next ten months, Medford Multicare will be a school and an internship training ground for Nicholas, Marta, James, Jonathan, Zabiah, Tyler, Hunter, and Austin. They will learn employability skills from a specialized Project SEARCH curriculum, engage in classroom work with teacher Linda Niosi, and be mentored by Medford Multicare staff.

Eight Project SEARCH internship candidates have successfully completed their first week at Medford Multicare Center.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Teacher Linda Niosi said, “During the first week, the students had an opportunity to adjust to their new surroundings, prepare resumes, and tour the facility.”

The eight interns were chosen for Project SEARCH based on their interests, strengths, and needs. During the first week, the students were introduced to central supply, dietary, recreation, laundry, and housekeeping departments.

They also interviewed with department heads. Ms. Niosi said, “The staff is wonderful and the residents are great. The students’ social skills are improving and I think this is going to be a great year.”

The Rocky Point School District and the Rocky Point Teachers’ Association have approved a new labor contract, resolving more than two years of active negotiations.

The new agreement, which runs from July 1st, 2011 through June 30th, 2020, carries no salary increases for the first two years, a 0.65% increase for each of the next two years, and ties future compensation to the New York State Tax Cap. As the previous contract expired on June 30th, 2011, the teachers have been working under the terms and conditions of their former contract, an arrangement stipulated in the Triborough Amendment of the Taylor Law. Setting a new precedent for labor contracts, a particular highlight of the newly ratified agreement is that salary increases occurring from the 2015-2016 through the 2019-2020 school years are tied to the tax cap and carry a clearly defined peak and base, thus eliminating the potential for spikes in labor costs.

Under these stipulations, increases will amount to 0.7 percent of the calculated tax levy percentage increase or the maximum allowable tax levy percentage increase as per the state tax cap, whichever is greater, provided that no annual increase shall be greater than 1 percent nor less than 0.5 percent. However, should the calculation call for an increase of less than 1 percent in both 20152016 and 2016-2017, an automatic 1 percent increase will be implemented in 2017-2018. With a ceiling increase of 1 percent and a minimum base of 0.5 percent, both parties are protected from outside contributing factors and the district is provided stability with regard to future financial planning. In the event the tax cap no longer exists or is substantially altered, both parties will renegotiate these terms.

“Given these difficult economic times, this contract reiterates our school district’s commitment to long-

range financial planning,” said Board of Education President Michael Nofi. “We are extremely happy to see this collaborative process come to an amicable conclusion and believe that this contract will preserve the integrity of the quality education our students receive within the limitations of our revenue resources.”

Routine step and lane increases will continue to be provided to qualified employees throughout the remainder of the contract, although two steps will be removed by the close of the 2017-2018 school year and compression in the schedule will take place accordingly.

This new approach to labor contracts comes on the heels of an earlier agreement reached between the district and the Rocky Point Administrators’ Association.

Touted as the first of its kind among unionized New York State administrators, this agreement runs through June 2015 and introduces a goals-based incentive pay program. Administrators are required to establish annual goals that represent rigorous initiatives and to identify ways to measure their success in attaining these goals.

An administrator who effectively accomplishes his/her goals will receive additional compensation beyond their annual contractual step increases.

“This unique approach of goal-based incentives not only benefits our administrators professionally but also our educational program as a whole,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Ring. “In essence we are asking our administrators to think outside the box and to go beyond their traditional responsibilities, as key partners in our mission of increasing academic outcomes for our students.”

Building upon this notion of creating opportunities for educational advancement, the teachers’ contract also includes increased opportunities for professional collaboration among teachers, particularly in the area

of special education. Teachers’ weekly eBoard updates will now be completed as part of their regular duties, and the time previously allotted for this work will be utilized for co-planning among and between members who are assigned to inclusion instruction. Those teachers working outside that area will dedicate this time to modifying lessons for the benefit of students both with and without disabilities, and to collaborate with fellow teachers.

“We are glad to have concluded this process with an agreement we feel will provide our district and membership with a level of certainty and sustainability for the next several years,” said Rocky Point Teachers Association President Michael Friscia. “The RPTA looks forward to continuing to work as partners in education with the school district and to meet the learning needs of the children of Rocky Point.”

Looking to ensure continuous feedback pertaining to student progress, the agreement creates ICARE/SHARP liaison positions for eligible employees. Teachers who work in the district’s Individualized Comprehensive Academic Response for Excellence (ICARE) and Striving for Higher Achievement at Rocky Point (SHARP) programs through BOCES and are appointed to the liaison role will be entitled to receive additional compensation in the amount of $20 for each hour of instruction in these non-mandated supplemental support and remediation programs.

Rounding out the remainder of the agreement is language regarding observations and evaluations as stipulated in the Annual Professional Performance Review plan, changes in portions of the health insurance agreement as per policy changes by the New York State Health Insurance Plan, and opportunities for future discussion of the Sick Leave Bank.

In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments. Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier.

• Aerate the property. Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul. Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration.

• Take steps to strengthen the roots. Aerating promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property.

• Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring. In addition, piles of debris might make good homes for organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees.

• Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead.

Fall Garden & Harvest Festival

The 3rd Fall Garden & Harvest Festival will take place at Bayard Cutting Arboretum, located in Oakdale, on Saturday, October 5th, and Sunday, October 6th. Events and activities will take place near the Dahlia garden and are slated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The day will feature horticultural and family activities that will include Dahlia garden tours, farm tours, demonstrations and

presentations, soil testing and advice, landscaping displays, wool spinning and weaving, model train exhibit, face painting, festival bingo, National League of American Pen Women Art Show, food and music. Local, produce, as well as fall plants, will be available for purchase.

Admission is $15 per car, or $7 with a valid Empire Passport. All proceeds go to supporting the care of the trees at Bayard

Cutting Arboretum.

Activities, demonstrations and garden/farm tours are included in the admission fee. The Manor House will be available for tours at $8 per person. Pumpkins for painting will be available for $2.

Many teachers took the opportunity to speak about the significance of the day as well as the heroic acts of volunteerism that transpired in the days, weeks and months that followed.

At P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, students gathered in the front bus circle to mark the solemn occasion together. Several vocal performers, under the direction of teacher Robert DePersio, sang renditions of “The StarSpangled Banner” and “Amazing Grace,” while band members, under the direction of Daniel Hayes,

Prep Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project.

But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin.

• Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint.

In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

• Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a

new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

• Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

• Prepare your paint.

Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl,

and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

• Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should

learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree.

Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property.

Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

• Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned.

Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs.

Tips For Tree Maintenance • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned.

• Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

• Remove dead limbs.

Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

• Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/ or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped.

Topping also decreases a tree’s life expectancy.

Ocean To Sound Relay Bethpage Federal Credit Union, a dedicated supporter of health and wellness initiatives on Long Island, announces its sponsorship of the Greater Long Island Running Club’s 28th Annual Ocean To Sound Relay.

The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay, which takes place on Sunday, September 29th, will take runners across both Nassau and Suffolk Counties with 120 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the South Shore to the North Shore of Long Island. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bethpage has sponsored the event.

Nearly 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the relay, which will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, money raised from the relay will go directly to support the organization’s Long Island Chapter. Long Island runner Alan End, who founded the relay back in 1985, is the relay director.

According to Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky, “The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is an exciting race for both runners and spectators.

We invite you to come down and cheer on your family, friends and neighbors sprinting across Long Island.”

The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay starts at

Jones Beach State Park and finishes on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. 120 eight-person teams will navigate their way through 15 different Long Island townships starting in Wantagh, traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, crossing into Huntington and hitting the Long Island Sound in Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, reaching Oyster Bay Cove, and finally hitting Oyster Bay. “The Ocean to Sound Relay is one of the most unique and anticipated events of every year, attracting runners from the entire tri-state area,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “We’re happy to participate again, and witness some amazing athletic abilities, organized impeccably by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and all for a deserving cause.”

The entry fee for the Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is $400 per team ($50 per runner) through September 16th, 2013, which covers entry into the race, a special commemorative t-shirt for each runner, and entry into the post-race party. Over The Bridge

The Long Island Board of REALTORS® Inc. (LIBOR) through the “We’re More Than REALTORS®” campaign, was honored to be a major sponsor of the 3rd Annual Hampton Bays Lions Club - Over the Bridge Run/Walk that was held on September 14th.

The crisp, yet sunny, late summer weather was perfect for a jog along the Atlantic Ocean, Shinnecock Inlet, Shinnecock Bay, on to the breathtaking views over the Ponquogue Bridge. And the crowd was out to prove it, making this event the most successful year to date,

for the Club.

“Supporting our community has always been one of our main goals at LIBOR; so to bring our support to the Hamptons community was a very proud moment for us!” said LIBOR Public Relations Committee Chairperson Kate Koplinka who was instrumental in bringing this sponsorship to fruition. As an eastern Suffolk REALTOR® Kate was thrilled to have the opportunity to extend LIBOR’s efforts to the east end, where in fact a new LIBOR Hamptons Chapter was recently formed.

LIBOR first became aware of this noteworthy event when REALTOR® Franklin Butz, organizer and creator, was awarded the December 2012 REALTOR® Spirit Award. Franklin, aside from a being a Realtor® for the past forty years, has also been a dedicated member of the HBLC for over 30 years. As an avid runner/jogger who participated in the Long Island Half Marathon, Shelter Island 10K and many other running events, he saw how popular these events were becoming. With this knowledge he proposed and completely organized the fundraising event for

the HBLC in 2011. The Walk/Run came to be called “Over the Bridge” because the course spans over the extraordinary Ponquogue Bridge.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to meet with so many people and paint a better image of what a REALTOR® is and cares about.” added Carlos Diaz, LIBOR Public Relations Committee Vice Chairperson, who was not only there from Queens to support the event but ran the 10K as well.

With the funds raised at the previous events the Club was able to supply five seeing eye dogs through the Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation to people in need, as well as make additional donations to the Hampton Bays Library, Churches, Boy and Girl Scouts, Booster club, little league baseball, the Dominican Sisters and local scholarships. The HBLC, established in 1948 has continuously helped people in need in the Hampton Bays and East Quogue community. LIBOR is proud to support the Hampton Bays Lions Club in their mission and looks forward to continuing their partnership in years to come.
