If your plans include traveling with your pet from the United States to Canada, you will need to bring along a certificate issued by a veterinarian that clearly identifies the animal and certifies that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 month period. Be sure to contact the government of the province you plan to visit as each province has its own requirements.

Plan for Restraint: Have a plan for how you’re going to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle. This is a crucial element of pet travel that is not taken seriously enough. The reality is that hundreds of pets are injured or even killed each year because they are allowed free reign in cars, trucks, RVs, and

SUVs. Even more real is the toll in human life and property damage caused when an “enthusiastic” animal distracts a driver, leading to an accident.

Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe when traveling in your vehicle. It’s important to familiarize your pet with the vehicle restraint of choice weeks or months before traveling so that they are comfortable.

Temporary ID Tag: In the unfortunate event that your pet runs off while you’re traveling. A temporary identification tag, along with a photo of your pet will help ensure their safe return. Attach a temporary ID tag to your pet’s collar in addition to their permanent tag.

Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments…

There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we?

No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings.

And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!?

Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious!

But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones.

For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year.

For spending quality time with those who mean the most.

It is time, time we cannot get enough of.

However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

Senioritis

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis.

Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses!

For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class.

This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down.

These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over.

These students have done it, they have completed their journey.

Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip!

This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career.

The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall.

This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic.

So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

Their particular brand of food may not be readily available and it is not advisable to introduce your pet to a new brand of food while traveling.

Other essentials to pack for your pet include collapsible travel food and water bowls, bedding, litter and litter box, leash, collar and tags, favorite toys, grooming supplies, a pet first-aid kit and any necessary medications.

And of course, be sure to always have an ample supply of water available for your pet.

Secure Pet Friendly Accommodations: If you’re planning a long journey and will need to stay in lodging on the way to your final destination, be sure to secure these pet friendly accommodations before you hit the road. Map out where you’ll be spending the night and arrange for lodging along the way.

Medical Records: In case of a medical emergency while traveling, it is advisable to bring along your pets medical records along with your vet’s contact information should they be needed for consultation.

Window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe.

Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris.

This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous.

Frequent Pit Stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet.

Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle.

Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel.

Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!).

Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes,

even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. Smaller pets are best suited for pet car seats. The car seat is secured in the back seat using a seat belt and your pet is secured in the car seat with a safety harness.

In addition to it’s safety features, a pet car seat will prop up your smaller pet, allowing them to better look out the window. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet.

Safe and Comfortable: Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority.

Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too.

Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick.

There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy.

Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip.

Black Friday Safety Tips With Black Friday quickly approaching, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco would like to provide some safety tips that will help everyone have a safe shopping experience.

“Whenever people feel stressed and rushed, they can be more vulnerable to crime. These tips offer some basic guidelines to follow to be safer while holiday shopping,” stated DeMarco.

Parking Lots: • When walking through parking lots, be aware of your surroundings.

• Always park where there is plenty of light between your car and the store.

• Keep your car locked and have your keys in hand before you go to your car.

• Before leaving your

vehicle, make sure there isn’t anything of value in sight, including cell phones, GPS units and holiday purchases.

• Parking lots are typically very crowded at the start of the holiday season. Use patience when looking for parking and pay extra attention when pulling out of a parking spot.

Shopping: • Expect long lines and be patient. Enter stores safely; there is no item worth rushing through a crowd and risking injury.

• Shop with others; there is safety in numbers.

• Don’t leave your purse unattended in your cart, even for a few seconds.

• Don’t carry large amounts of money. Keep money in a front pocket.

• Only carry one or two

credit cards and make sure you secure them after use.

• If shopping online, stick with established retailers and retailers from our local community with a presence online.

Shopping With Children: • Always supervise your children in public places.

Accompany young children to the restroom.

• Remind children to remain in the same area in the event they lose sight of you.

• Never dress children in clothing that displays their first or last names.

Please remember that if you are a victim of crime, you should call 911 immediately. If we all follow these common sense tips, we can enjoy a safe holiday season.

Comedy Fundraiser

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children celebrated the opening of their third Medical Facility in Stony Brook with a successful comedy show fundraiser on November 14th at Farmingdale’s Colonial Springs Golf Course. The 7 p.m. evening event was hosted by “Laughter Saves Lives,” a comedy groupe inspired by their own struggles to

aid others in need. This spectacular fundraiser to benefit Angela’s House featured comedian’s Mike Keegan, Maria Walsh and headliner, Tom Daddario.

The Colonial Springs Golf Club treated guests to a wonderful variety of dinner options while raffle items ranging from home appliances to rock music memorabilia sat on display.

Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored former New York Jet Marty Lyons at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, on the occasion of his induction to the New Yorks Jets Ring of Honor. Mr. Lyons, one-fourth of the feared front four of the 1980’s Jet teams, known as the New York Sack Exchange was known for his hard work and ferocity on the field, but maybe is better known for his kindly and charitable ways off the

field.

While with the Jets, Mr. Lyons started the Marty Lyons Foundation, helping give wishes to terminally ill children between the ages of three and 17. It was because of this work with his foundation that Mr. Lyons won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Heisman Humanitarian Award.

This year, the Jets inducted Mr. Lyons into the New York Jets Ring of Honor at Metlife Stadium during a ceremony featuring past honorees, and former teammates of Mr. Lyons. “Besides being

a national champion at the University of Alabama, an 11-year veteran with the New York Jets, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, a successful businessman and broadcaster, it is Mr. Lyons ‘s work with the community right here in Suffolk County that is his biggest accomplishment,” said Legislator Kennedy.

Increasing Awareness Recognizing that teen drug use is an ongoing concern not only in communities throughout the country but locally as well, the Rocky Point School District held an informative Drug-Free Community Forum in early November in the Rocky Point High School auditorium.

After watching an informative video about the rise in use of electronic cigarettes, Principal John DeBenedetto welcomed attendees and addressed the topic highlighted in the video. “The use of e-cigarettes is a growing issue within schools and a potential health risk for our students,” he said. “These devices can be used to inhale illegal drugs without producing an aroma. The Suffolk County Department of Health states that e-cigarettes pose a real threat to students and are banned in all public places where smoking is banned. A recent study by the Center for Disease Control & Prevention confirms that they are more addictive than traditional cigarettes. They are not regulated by the FDA and are currently under review for negative health effects.”

Throughout the program, district officials provided an overview of the schools’ past and current efforts to combat the issue of drug use and abuse within the local community, and several keynote speakers spoke in depth about the problem more globally.

“We are here tonight to create community awareness about the drug epidemic impacting our society and to help prevent the abuse of drugs by our youth,” said high school Assistant Principal Susann Crossan, who coordinated the program. “It is important for many

people to convince our students that the risks associated with drug use are not worth taking, and that they can make more positive alternative choices. Our overall goal is to build on our community’s strengths so we can reduce or eliminate the many problems associated with drug use.”

Father Frank Pizzarelli from Hope House Ministries concluded the impactful forum by discussing his work at the ministry. The establishment, located in Port Jefferson, provides assistance to young people and families in crisis and wounded individuals who are seen as abandoned and neglected. During his remarks, Father Frank noted the value of this type of engaging community meeting and expressed a desire for more parents to join in on future conversations.

Rocky Point School District students and staff members paid tribute to the nation’s service members by honoring them during several in-school Veterans Day ceremonies. As a result of their outstanding performance on the PSAT exam and overall GPA, Ward Melville High School seniors Dylan Lopez and Marissa Montoya have been named National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars.

This year, the NHRP honored 5,300 Hispanic/ Latino students from a pool of nearly 260,000 students who took the 2012 PSAT exam. Recognized students are of Hispanic/Latino descent, achieved PSAT results above the 188 high

selection index and possess a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The honor, issued by the College Board, was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/ Latino high school students.

Celebrating Peace Ward Melville High School 11th-grader Sarah Schoenfeld was named the winner of this year’s Shanti Fund poster design contest. Sarah created the award-winning design in her advanced graphic

design class, taught by Jennifer Trettner. She will be honored during an award ceremony at the Suffolk County executive’s office and her poster will be part of the 2014 Shanti Fund calendar.

As a testament to their countless years of dedication to academics and athletics, nine talented Rocky Point High School seniors have been selected to continue their winning careers at some of the nation’s top colleges this fall. This year’s event was noted to have recognized one of the largest numbers of student-athletes in recent years.

Sheriff Honored With Award Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was recently selected to receive the Caron Legal Professional/Uniformed Public Service Award.

This award recognizes an individual who has done an outstanding job in either the legal or public service fields by combating the fight against chemical dependency through due process of the law, prevention and education.

He was nominated for the award by Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, the Executive Director of the Long Island Council on Drug and

Alcoholism.

DeMarco, who accepted the award during a ceremony last week held at Adelphi University, thanked the Caron Center and Dr. Reynolds for their support, and stated “Our success is a credit to the many officers, community groups and volunteers who help us reach hundreds of young people each year with our prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.”

Sheriff DeMarco has devoted significant resources to helping combat teen drug use through prevention

programs, such as “Test, Don’t Guess” and the “S.T.O.P.P.E.D. Program,” as well as by connecting criminally drug-involved youth to appropriate treatment programs during and following a period of incarceration.

The Sheriff’s Office maintains a list of its specialized prevention programs on its website at www.suffolksheriff.com.

Stellar Recital At Staller On November 10th, Port Jefferson music teacher Vanessa Salzman accompanied district orchestra students and their families to the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University to see a performance by JapaneseAmerican violin sensation Midori.

During her recital, Midori played sonatas by Mozart, Bloch, Hindemith, Fauré and Schubert. The district’s complimentary admission to the event

was made possible by the ongoing collaborative efforts of Salzman and Staller Center outreach coordinator Paul Newland.

“The concert was a huge success,” said Salzman, who was one of more than 60 Port Jefferson School District members in attendance. “I was truly amazed by how many students and family members from our schools showed such genuine interest and enthusiasm for the recital. It was very

special to be able to share such an enriching and unique experience outside of school with them.”

Midori made her musical debut at the age of 11 with the New York Philharmonic and has since distinguished herself as a master musician who has been performing for more than 30 years.

She also works as a community engagement activist, providing musical instruction to underserved students.

History Bee

Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District held its annual Intramural History Bee on November 12th. All fourthand fifth-grade students had the opportunity to take the 50-question exam, which served as the first round of qualifying competition for the National History Bee. “The National History

Bee is an academic competition for elementary and middle school students that tests knowledge in a wide range of historical topics,” said Janelle Bellotti, a Studies Enriching Academic Learning teacher for the district.

Lieutenant Honored

On Tuesday, November 19th, Legislator Sarah Anker recognized retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Bernadette Beckwell before the Suffolk County Legislature.

While serving as a Lieutenant in the US Navy in 2007, Beckwell’s troop was assigned to scouting remote locations in Afghanistan. During a mission, her plane was struck by enemy fire and Beckwell’s troop was forced to complete the mission on land via cargo truck. The

overland journey was an extremely uncomfortable ride in which Beckwell was forced to sit beneath a metal bar, as the truck crossed over the rough Afghani terrain, causing her to suffer severe head injuries and spinal nerve damage.

Although Lieutenant Beckwell underwent great distress, she returned home to become a symbol of resilience. She continues to participate in the Wounded Warrior Project where she is able to

share her story with other veterans.

“As the daughter of a disabled Navy veteran, I am proud to recognize Lieutenant Beckwell for her courageous service to our country,” said Legislator Anker. “Her story is one of perseverance and strength, and reminds us how fortunate we are to have the brave men and women of the armed forces to protect our freedom.”

Lieutenant Beckwell, formerly of Ridge, now resides in Miller Place with her service dog Tucker. She shared that golf has helped her to cope with her experiences and that she recently joined the Birchwood Spring Lake Veterans Group for its annual Golf Outing to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Thanksgiving Adventure in the intramural bee and will advance to the next level of competition, the Online Regional Qualifying Exam, which will take place on January 28th.

Students who score within the top 120 on the ORQE in their region will advance to the regional finals. Lucas, a fifth-grader, took third place in the bee’s national championship last year.

As an extension of their social studies curriculum and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, kindergarten students at Arrowhead Elementary School in the Three Village School District had the chance to experience the holiday in a hands-on way as they acted as Native Americans and Pilgrims during the school’s annual

Thanksgiving Adventure.

Prior to the big event, students learned about the first Thanksgiving, the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock.

During the culminating activity, the students made macaroni necklaces, turkey napkin holders, Native American headdresses and Pilgrim hats. They also learned

how to tell a story using Native American symbols, pretended to plant corn in small cups and shared stories in a teepee. After arriving at the event on the “Mayflower,” each student took a turn signing a “Friendship Promise.” The school’s holiday activities also included a grade-level Thanksgiving feast the following week.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

In conjunction with the ongoing observance of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Shinnecock Hills campus, Stony Brook Southampton will host the traditional holiday lighting of the windmill and reception in Chancellors Hall on Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 7 p.m. The 301 year-old landmark underwent repairs last year following damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011. Now fully repaired,

the yoke that supports its blades was cracked, and the windmill had been without its crown.

This year’s Windmill Lighting program, free and open to the public, will feature tours of the new Marine Sciences Center, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Labs (DPT), and the iconic windmill, named this year a Literary Landmark. The festivities will also include music from the Stony Brook University Pep

Band, an appearance by Seawolves mascot Wolfie, seasonal refreshments, a caricaturist, balloon artist, and crafts for children.

Following the Windmill Lighting and reception, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) will present a lecture on the New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms and Emergencies (NYS RISE) in Duke Lecture Hall at 7:30 p.m. The presentation

Future Careers

Taking their first steps toward selecting a potential future career, R.C. Murphy Junior High School ninthgraders had the chance to learn about a wide range of professions during the building’s annual career awareness fair.

The event, which was set up in the school’s gymnasium and sponsored by the family and consumer science department, afforded students the opportunity to speak with professionals from such fields as physical therapy, architecture, substance abuse counseling and finance in a one-on-one

setting. As the students are technically beginning their first year of high school, the fair aims to spark an interest in the career path they might be interested in pursuing in the future.

“I thought today was really interesting to see what kind of job options I had in the future,” said ninth-grader Lauren Senia, who expressed an interest in event planning and physical therapy. “I think that this event helped to set some students on the path of which electives to consider taking in high school as well as gave them a deeper understanding of

the training or schooling required for those fields,” added Benjamin Sullivan.

“As educators, we see the importance of connecting school to future endeavors, and this program allows for these connections to be made,” said teacher Ginger Ferraro, who coordinated the program along with Emma Domino.

“The response from our students and presenters was so positive that we are looking into the possibility of working with our guidance department to have monthly professional ‘meet and greets’ for our students.”

Lifting Up LI

A core group of Three Village Central School District students from grades 4-12 joined hundreds of peers from across Long Island to create lasting change in their communities during the first Lift Up Long Island event. The program, which brought together more than 250 students, local business owners, educators and community members, offered students the chance to develop realworld critical thinking skills as they brainstormed solutions to local needs.

On the heels of the first anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, the program focused on the challenges each participating community faced in the aftermath of the devastating hurricane

and several social issues that existed well before the storm rushed ashore.

After hearing from keynote speaker Julie Foudy, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, the students met with the panel of experts in attendance to discuss ways to strengthen community resources, address a social concern and/or intensify Long Island’s ability to overcome future natural or man-made catastrophes.

This fall’s event was the first in a series of three service learning opportunities occurring over the next year aimed at facilitating studentdriven social change efforts and instilling a culture of youth-led social impact across Long Island.
