The members of the Babylon Lions Club will be flipping pancakes and cooking eggs and sausage to raise money for local causes on April 14th, just as they have been doing for the past 44 years. The breakfast will be held at the Babylon Memorial School, located on Park Avenue in Babylon.

“This is a great family event that our neighbors look forward to every year,” said Club President Charlie Creegan. The club has served up to 600 breakfasts in a six hour cooking marathon that is a labor of love for club members. “As our longest running event, every member is involved in making it a success,” added Creegan.

The cost of the event is still just $6 per person and includes all you can eat pancakes, plus grilled sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk and coffee.

The students of West Babylon Union Free School District annually celebrate the joys of reading during the Parents As Reading Partners celebrations held throughout the district.

PARP is a national program that encourages parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. Each school within the district honors this month in a myriad of ways.

Most begin with a kickoff celebration in which parents and teachers – or an outside performing group, such as the Agostino Arts Bodacious Book Shows – present a program for students that introduces the PARP theme for the month and encourages students’ daily reading in a way that is fun and memorable. Students are urged to maintain a reading log with their parents for the month and

Of Spring & Weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass.

We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their

wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning.

Five months later. Crazy.

Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there.

And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only

that. (Please.)

We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain.

Too cold? Where’s spring?

Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues.

Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

Hairspray It’s been said, “The show must go on!” and a little snow couldn’t stop North Babylon High School’s Drama Club from performing their musical Hairspray for a packed house for two shows on February 10th.

Set in the 1960s, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad’s dream to be a featured performer on the dance television show “The Corny Collins Show.”

Once her dream is realized, Tracy launches a campaign to racially integrate the show. Leading an outstanding cast of performers was Lauren Coccaro as Tracy Turnblad.

Working alongside Lauren were Brian Frank as Tracy’s love interest Link, Katie Schneider as Tracy’s best friend Penny, Emily Winter and Dan Benson as Tracy’s parents, and Joseph Pascone, Carolyn Mistretta,

Kayla Crowley, Billy Zangerle, Maria Pigatti and Elijah Andrews as Corny Collins, Velma, Amber, Spritzer, Motormouth and Seaweed.

David Signorelli directed the show with assistance from musical director Larry Wurtzel, costume designer MarySusan Noll, orchestra director Frank Rizzo, stage crew director Philip Handler and choreographer Erica Beal.

According to RandomActsofKindness. org, the program is a school-based initiative that was founded on the belief that teaching kindness in schools can make a big difference in students’ lives.
