It was their first Long Island championship in school history. As for the Panthers boys varsity basketball team, they finished first in Suffolk League VII and captured a New York State finalist plaque. They also had numerous individual achievements, with Jacob Carlock, Brendan Laing and Raymond Wardell earning All-League, and Fernando Vasquez taking home honors for AllCounty and Second Team Long Island. “The three teams we are recognizing here today have each done something that has never been done in the long and storied history of Babylon athletics,” said Babylon Athletic Director Michael DeJoseph. “Our football team went undefeated and won a Long Island championship, and also won the Rutgers Cup trophy for the first time in Babylon history. As for girls volleyball, they had never been to the Long Island championship before, so the team and their coaches deserve congratulations. How to edge a lawn Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.

you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

What Are You Going To Do With The Ashes

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent to interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is that there are more ashes on shorelines than in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved one’s ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification, funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that Mom has passed and now they need Dad’s ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. The History of Johnstons’ Wellwood Funeral Home

Once upon a time, Richard H. Johnston became a funeral director, married Irene Happ, and moved to the village of Lindenhurst from New York City. Then came World War II, and he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he worked as a funeral director at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Morgue. In 1958, Richard H. and Irene Johnston opened a funeral home. They moved above the funeral home with their three children to be readily available to families at any hour. About ten years later, Richard H. and Irene retired to Florida, and their son, Richard, who was now home from service in the U.S. Air Force in Germany during the Vietnam War, took over the business.
