awarded several grants that support its mission without adding additional burden to the community. Grants include the STLE: Strengthening Teacher Leader Effectiveness Grant, the Carol M. White PEP Grant and the Virtual AP Grant, all of which support professional development and technology for the district. An additional review of materials and supplies, as well as equipment and textbooks, was another means by which the administration was able to streamline costs. The district has moved to the use of electronic report cards this year so as to reduce the cost of paper and mailing. In addition, it continues to utilize BOCES services whenever it can to maximize BOCES aid. The district recently approved a contract with a consulting firm to review its state aid submissions to determine whether it is maximizing the state aid in every area, and has initiated a longrange planning group to perform a consolidation feasibility study.

Several steps have been taken to streamline expenditures within the district in order to present a proposed 2013-2014 budget that falls below the allowable tax levy cap while saving money for the future. Last year, teacher retirement incentives were negotiated, saving the district money on salary and retirement costs. Additionally, the district will see cost-saving staff reductions due to the consolidation of the Language Arts and Testing Office. The duties currently held by the administrator of this department, who will be retiring in June, will be shared among several other district staff members. The district had worked with the custodial staff to renegotiate the terms of their contracts. As such, head custodians now receive compensatory time for weekend work rather than overtime. New hires of the CSEA and WBAA units, hired after this year, will contribute a higher percentage toward their health insurance as a means to reduce district costs. The district has been

Families Walk For Health More than 15,000 women in our community this year will receive care at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. On Saturday, May 4th, at 9 a.m., area residents can show their support for these women and the Center by taking part in the 19th Annual Families Walk for Hope. Hundreds of people take part each year in the five-

mile walk through scenic Port Jefferson and Belle Terre. They walk to support women with breast cancer. They walk in memory of a mother, sister, daughter, friend or co-worker whose life was cut short by the disease. The Complaint Dept. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

Babylon followed up on a superb fall sports season with another historic four-month stretch that spawned a New York State finalist plaque, several New York State Public High School Athletic Association ScholarAthlete Team awards, numerous individual accolades, incredible team milestones and a lifetime of memories. Boys varsity basketball won a finalist plaque in New York State Class B and earned a NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award with a cumulative GPA of 91.494. Jacob Carlock, Brendan Laing and Raymond Wardell were named All-League, and Fernando Varquez earned recognition as both an AllCounty athlete and Second Team All-Long Island. Girls varsity basketball earned a NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award with a cumulative GPA of 94.407 and had three All-League athletes in Kristen Altieri, Devyn Antolini and Emily Funk.

Winter Sports Highlights Antolini and Funk also won Academic All-County awards, along with Lauren Kaible and Elizabeth and Mary Tigre. Varsity boys track earned a Scholar-Athlete Team Award with a cumulative GPA of 97.196. Long-jump specialist Collin Godfrey was named All-County. Girls track also had a nice winter season, finishing with a 95.943 GPA to earn a Scholar-Athlete Team Award. Ashley Lucas earned the nod both for All-County and All-League. In Panthers varsity wrestling, the team earned third place in Suffolk League VII, along with a top-five finish in Section XI. Brian Loskamp and Dom Mazzella became Suffolk County champion wrestlers, and Jonathan Coffen, John Dertinger, Brett Frole, AJ Giuliano, Tyler Jacinth, John Larsen, Ross Lipides, Brian LosKamp, Richard Wilson and Luke Zappia were recognized as All-County athletes.

According to a recent study issued by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, widely-held views that there is a suicide spike during the winter holidays is untrue. Instead, suicide and suicide attempts actually spike during the spring/ summer months. “We know that this finding is counter-intuitive to commonly-held beliefs,” states Theresa Buhse, Associate Executive Director, Long Island Crisis Center. “However, by correcting this myth, we can be more proactive in being suicide aware and preventive if we know the reality.” The Crisis Center urges everyone to be aware of the possible “signs of suicide:” · Sadness and crying · Increase or decrease in sleeping patterns · Boredom and listlessness · Angry shifting to silent withdrawal · Withdrawal from usual social activities, loneliness · Loss of interest in hobbies, sports, job or school · Drop in grades, inability to complete assignments or pay attention in class · Increased risk-taking · Sense of worthlessness and low self-esteem · Increased use of drugs and alcohol · Neglecting personal hygiene and appearance · Re-occurring themes of death and self-destruction in poetry, writing, artwork · Lack of plans for the future · Statements like “I want to die,” “I don’t want to live anymore,” I want to go to sleep and never wake up,” “Soon this pain will be over,” “I don’t want to be here anymore.” “While this seasonal enigma has not yet been completely explained, it is believed that during the winter, people with depression are often surrounded by persons who are feeling downhearted, too, because of the weather,” continues Ms. Buhse. “However, with the arrival of Spring, people who were feeling down because of the weather start to feel better; and people who are depressed for other reasons remain depressed. Flowers add tremendously to the serenity and beauty of a funeral. But there is a point when “too much of a good thing” is not in the interest of all concerned. Now, I know that the florist dislike it when I write an article like this one, but remember I also recommend renting caskets to save money. There are alternatives to sending flowers. You can bring pictures of the deceased to share with the family. You can donate the money to a charity of your choice or a charity the family selects. You can send food to the home for the family between visiting hours or after the funeral. You can put money in an envelope and give it to the family and allow them to make the decision of what memorial they would like to see benefit from their loss. The question I am asked most often is “What happens to the flowers?” Well, some of the pieces are taken to the church (maximum of two pieces); some are taken to the cemetery. When possible some are given to nursing homes or other churches or charitable groups that may need flowers for the evening. The flowers that cannot be donated or given away are simply discarded. Remember, flowers do add to the beauty and serenity of the funeral but also remember there are other alternatives to sending flowers which I have mentioned above.
