This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon.

Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and

Volunteers Needed Hospice Care Network seeks NY State Licensed Massage Therapists to volunteer their time to provide therapeutic massages for people facing life limiting illnesses. Our clients benefit greatly from massage therapy for symptom control as well as for emotional and spiritual comfort. General and job specific orientation will be provided in addition to ongoing support and mentorship.

They are looking for volunteers to provide weekly three hour shifts at one of three inpatient units. Our inpatient units are located at: Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream; The Hospice Suites at Harborside in Manhasset; and the Hospice Inn in Melville.

Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day.

In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth.

That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch.

The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next.

And the one after that.

Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.)

In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu?

A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

Q: Who should get the flu vaccine?

A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types?

A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine.

The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot.

Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it.

The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

• Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned.

Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs.

• Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned.

• Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s

limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground.

• Remove dead limbs.

Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

• Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped. Topping also decreases a tree’s life expectancy.

Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. Choosing a college will certainly be the biggest decision you’ve made this far, so it goes without saying to proceed with both caution and ferocity.

Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank.

Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project.

But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin.

• Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint.

In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities.

• Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint.

• Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer

can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake.

• Prepare your paint.

Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

• Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Nature Center Reopens The South Shore Nature Center celebrated the beginning of a new chapter today, at a special ceremony held at its facility located on Bayview Avenue in East Islip, where the doors to the Nature Center were officially reopened to the public for the first time since late 2012, and the building rededicated as the Orr Wildlife Learning Center (OWLC), in honor of the Orr Family who donated the house and land to the Town in 1975.

Islip Town Board Members Anthony Senft, Jr., Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Steve Flotteron, and Town Clerk Olga Murray and Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, were joined by Seatuck officials, state and county officials, and community members in celebrating the much-anticipated event that resurrected an invaluable educational resource.

Owned and operated by the Town since 1977, the SSNC’s education center was forced to close earlier this year due to substantial financial strains in Town government. But thanks to the hard work and commitment of Council Members Anthony Senft, Jr. and Trish Bergin Weichbrodt in seeking out a partnership with the environmental nonprofit organization Seatuck Environmental Association to manage the site, nature enthusiasts of all ages will again have the opportunity to enjoy the facility and the wide variety of programs that will be administered there.

three years. “For more than three decades, the SSNC has been a vital sanctuary for wildlife and an invaluable educational and recreational resource for the citizens of Islip,” said Enrico Nardon, Seatuck Executive Director.

“The partnership with Islip Town ensures that the facility will continue to serve these important roles for many years to come, and helps us to enhance the number and kinds of programs that Seatuck can offer to the public, including our brand new Little Peepers program, Suffolk County’s first nature-based preschool program which kicked off earlier this week. ” The SSNC is a 200-acre preserve that stretches all the way to the shores of the Great South Bay, and consists of mature upland forests, freshwater wetlands and a vast salt marsh. It also boasts an extensive network of trails and a boardwalk that afford visitors miles of access to the property’s beauty and ecological diversity. An Open House is planned at SSNC on Sunday, September 15th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring a full schedule of nature programs, as well as crafts, games and other activities for the whole family. The Islip Town Department of Economic Development has announced that the first Sandy-impacted small businesses have been approved for assistance grants, which come from New York State’s Small Business Storm Recovery Program.

Through this program, small businesses are eligible for grants of up to $50,000 or more depending on the extent of a business’s storm-related losses. The grants are designed to help replace machinery, inventory, furniture and fixtures, and other physical resources that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

“In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy our Economic Development department established a point of contact between local businesses and the agencies that could aid the recovery process,” said Councilman John Cochrane, liaison to the department. “I urge every business that suffered losses as a result of the storm to contact us and see what programs might

GIRL SCOUT SILVER PROJECT - Following a hospital stay last year, 12 year-old Girl Scout Sarah Logan, Troop 75 in Babylon Village, developed the “Time Box” to help other “tweens” pass the time while in the hospital. Her idea earned her Girl Scout’s Silver Award. In addition to researching toy manufacturers for mind challenging toys, Sarah also handmade items and collected donations from family and friends, creating four Time Boxes customized for 10-15 year-olds in Good Samaritan Hospital’s Pediatric Unit.
