He congratulated the students for their accomplishments and provided tips on how to survive middle school. He also told the students that this is a chance for a new adventure and to start a clean slate in this next chapter of their lives.

New Appointee The West Islip Board of Education, at its meeting on June 13th, approved the appointment of Dr. Anne M. Rullan to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, effective August 1, 2013. Dr. Rullan replaces Bernadette M. Burns, who will assume the role of Superintendent due to the retirement of Richard Simon.

Dr. Rullan comes to West Islip from the Three Village Central School District where she held the title of Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction K-12.

She has served as an elementary school principal in the Three Village and Westhampton Beach school districts.

Dr. Rullan is also an adjunct Assistant Professor of Educational Administration, Leadership and Technology for Dowling College.

The Summer Mindset

As June comes to a close, thousands of Long Island’s students will be flocking to the beaches instead of to the classrooms.

The end of June customarily signifies the end of the school year. With the end of the school year comes herds of teens with nothing scheduled to do all day. These newly freed kids will go to the beach in search of a little relaxation to unwind from yet another stressful school year.

As the last bell of the year tolls, many local high schoolers will beeline straight for Long Island’s coast. After my final test, the Chemistry Regents, my friends and

I hopped on the ferry to Ocean Beach and spent some time enjoying the sand, the sun and the surf.

It was nice just to forget about studying, about stress, and about doing our homework.

The realization that we had just begun our three month relaxation period had finally started to set in. While playing in the water with my closest friends, we felt happy to be done with school.

The pressure put on children from school magically disappears as you leave the classroom for the last time for almost 100 days. On that final day, the only worry one feels is whether or not they have a ride to

the beach. Here on Long Island, the beach is a Mecca for teens. With no worries about school, we are free to enjoy our downtime and finally let loose.

As my friends and I exemplified, the primary goal of June - September shouldn’t rest upon education; it should rest upon relaxation.

The precious little time you have to unwind is important to students.

Everyone needs some time to just “shut your brain off” and get into the “summer mindset.”

The end of the school year is a time that enables teens to have fun, relax and hang out with friends.

For the second year in a row, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be hosting its One Million Dollar Duck Race on July 13th on 2 Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches.

The event is to help raise money to benefit the camp’s special-needs children.

The Million Dollar Duck Race starts at 5 p.m.

Each duck costs $10. The $1 million prize will be awarded to the first- and tenth-place ducks if they are one of the pre-selected ducks. Seven thousand small ducks will be available for sale.

General admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Children’s admission includes a hot dog and soda. General admission will also include hayrides, bouncy rides, raffles and music.

The Million Dollar Duck Race follows the Annual Kaler’s Pond Duck Race, which starts at 4 p.m. Each duck is available for $100, with 250 ducks for sale.

There will be a $10,000 prize for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place, if all 250 ducks are sold. In the event all the ducks are not purchased, first prize will be split evenly between the winner and the camp.

Both races are part of the camp’s 44th Annual Family Style Duck Bar-B-Que and Duck Race. Tickets are $30 for a duck dinner ($35 at the gate), $25 for a chicken dinner ($30 at the gate). Lobster dinners are available (for pre-sale only) for $40. Gates open at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www. campduckrace.com.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment. On Monday, July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its third annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club on 483 West Main St., in Huntington.

The price is $2,000 for a foursome. That includes brunch, a round of golf, cocktail hour and dinner.

For dinner only (no golf), the cost is $175 per person.

All proceeds from the event will go towards ADRC and The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Last year, the event successfully raised over $127,000 towards Alzheimer’s research and treatment.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start.

The cocktail reception will start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, a program, trophies and raffles. Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-InOne Challenge sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown.

Fifth Grade Grads Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently attended a Moving Up Ceremony for the Fifth Grade Students at Oquenock Elementary School in West Islip.

Legislator Barraga spoke to the students congratulating them for their accomplishments and providing tips on how to survive middle school.

Additionally the Legislator told the students that this is a chance for a

new adventure and to start a clean slate and that they will encounter new people, new school subjects, new activities, and many more teachers than they are used to.

The 2013 Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim will be held on Friday, July 12th, at 7:45 a.m. The event is a 5.25 mile swim across the Great South Bay, beginning in Kismet, Fire Island and ending at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters, at 11:45 a.m. Proceeds from this year’s swim will benefit the Hospice Care Network’s Children and Family Bereavement Program and the Maggie Fischer Scholarship Fund.

The swim dates back to the early 1900’s. It experienced a hiatus of 22 years after 1977 and was brought back in 1999 by Rory Allen, a Bay Shore resident and Ferry Captain. Days before the swim, Maggie Fischer, a 17 year-old Brightwaters resident and Saltaire lifeguard, was killed in a car accident. She was to have competed in the event. The organizers and
