Of Spring & Weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their
wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only
that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

On March 15th, close to 300 of Long Island’s best high school students convened at Dowling College in Oakdale, to take part in the 4th Annual Long Island Youth Summit. Participants of the Summit presented possible solutions to a variety of problems ranging from protection of water and open space to racial and economic inequalities to teenage abuse of prescription drugs. Student finalists, who submitted original research projects in the form of essays, artwork and videos, attended the half-day Summit, where they worked with top experts to explore solutions for Long Island. The Summit is a publicprivate partnership between Dowling College, the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Vision Long Island and participating high school districts on Long Island, with students from 21 school districts in both Suffolk and Nassau counties submitting

The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council will be holding an incredible event for the Scouts of Suffolk County over the weekend of April 26th through 28th. Imagine over 6,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers and adult leaders all gathered together for one big celebration of Scouting. Last held in 2010, to mark the 100th Anniversary of Scouting, the Camporee is a chance to camp out with friends, meet new people, try activities, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors. The event is being held at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. “Southaven – 2013” will feature over 200 activities for the participants. The aquatic area will provide row boating, canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Cub Scout activities will include archery, BB shooting, craft and science stations. Older Boy Scouts will ride BMX bike trails, participate in archery shooting, tomahawk throwing, pioneering and orienteering while camping at the park. In addition to the age-

Long Island youth have seen enough marketing from the tobacco industry and will join teens around the country to stand up and speak out against big tobacco, today on National Kick Butts Day. In New York State, 107,000 high school students smoke and over 22,000 kids under 18 become new daily smokers each year. To tackle this issue head-on, the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island will be partnering with youth groups from Nassau and Suffolk Counties to hold Kick Butts Day activities. “Youth smoking is still a problem,” said Susan Kennedy Director of the Coalition. “According to the Surgeon General’s 2012 report Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, youth tobacco use is a “pediatric epidemic” and is caused, in part, by tobacco industry marketing.” Retailers in New York display an average of 32 square feet of tobacco products or the equivalent of more than 200 cigarette pack faces. In New York, 82% of retailers dedicate at least half of the space behind the checkout counter to openly visible tobacco products. “32 square feet is larger than a billboard,” said Kennedy. “And it’s illegal for the industry to use billboards.” Kick Butts Day, organized by the Campaign for TobaccoFree Kids, is a national day of activism that empowers youth. Rain mixed with snow that signaled the early stages of a nor’easter failed to dissuade 200 guests from attending The Friends of Mercy Medical Center’s 47th Annual Gentlemen’s St. Patrick’s Dinner. Returning to a familiar venue at the Hempstead Golf and Country Club, the March 7th black-tie event honored State Senator Dean G. Skelos, Republican Conference Leader, Temporary President and co-Leader of the State Senate’s historic majority governing coalition. Dr. Alan Guerci, Mercy’s president and CEO, was presented with a check for $170,000 representing the proceeds of The Friends’ 2012 fund-raising efforts which were pledged to support the hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only facility on the south shore of Nassau County designated by New York

Scheduled this year to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has again joined forces with Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to bring a seminar to Long Island that will help first responders and others not usually accustomed to
interacting with those with autism better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise in an emergency situation. This year two seminars will be offered. The first is geared toward first responders and firefighters but is equally as relevant to anyone who might have to interact with an individual with autism in a tense
situation. It was created by a Massachusetts firefighter who is also the father of a son with autism and featured on NBC’s Today show. It will be presented by Jason Dorval, also a firefighter and the father of child with autism. The second, similar to the first seminar, is geared toward law enforcement, security, school support and hospital support personnel. Both

will be held at Hampton Bays Middle School on Saturday, April 6th. The first starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Dorval, a certified public fire and life safety instructor and presenter for the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC), will discuss identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the fastest growing neurobiological condition in the world. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD, as well as ways to build relationships with the ASD community. “As a parent of a child with autism and a firefighter, I know firsthand that working
with a developmentally disabled child can be challenging. Their lack of understanding, limited communication, and other special needs can be a huge problem in an emergency situation. This course will prepare first responders to better understand these individuals and react accordingly,” said Dorval. Flying Point Foundation founder Kim Covell said the feedback from last year’s seminar was so positive that it was important to offer it a second time and expand its scope to include anyone who might interact with individuals with autism. The county has again approved first responders receiving three hours noncore professional credit for taking the seminar, added Covell. “The techniques and tools that each responder will learn in this seminar will be helpful to the patient, as well the
provider by instilling confidence that he or she will be able to handle any situation that arises,” said Tom Lateulere, chief of education and training for the Suffolk County EMS Division. The seminars are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about communicating with an individual with autism in a special situation. First responders who wish to obtain credit for attending the course should register through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services at 631.852.5800. All others should register by emailing info@ fpf4autism.org. Checkin opens at 9 a.m. for the morning session and a light breakfast will be served; check-in for the afternoon session will begin at noon and refreshments will be served.

A good time was had by all who attended the Official Grand Opening Celebration of Bettinelli’s Community Boxing Academy | BCBA. BCBA recently moved from Lindenhurst, where it had operated since opening its doors in 2004. It now operates from the gymnasium at the recently closed Westbrook Elementary School located on Higbie Lane. The BCBA staff was joined by members of the West Islip Chamber of Commerce, local Veterans from VFW Hall 7279, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter along
with family, friends and residents. The morning event started with the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Ret. Chief of Police Lou Telano and Ret. Lt. Robert Johnson and was followed by the National Anthem performed by BCBA coach Rick Weidenburner. A very special prayer followed lead by the Rev. Bill Minson of Tuday Ministries |Tuday.net. Reverend Minson flew in special from his Los Angeles ministry to offer his blessing wish BCBA well. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout. I
am so proud that we could show this community the support BCBA lends our youth, military, law enforcement professionals and people of faith. After nine years, we finally feel like we have a home”, said Ray Bettinelli, Head Boxing Coach and Director of Operations for BCBA. New Museum To Be Formed Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and the members of the Islip Town Board are pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters (FITF) for the construction and operation of a firefighting museum. The
agreement will let FITF establish a public display of antique and modern firefighting equipment that will be open to the public. “Getting this project off the ground has been a passion of mine for some time now,” said Councilman Flotteron. “I
believe we have found the perfect location for this facility and the Town Board is proud to contribute this land to the Friends of Islip Town Firemen.” “This is a long overdue tribute to the extraordinary sacrifice and heroism of the men and women of our fire services,” said
Supervisor Tom Croci. “They risk their lives and some have perished protecting our families and our community. Islip is proud to be the home of this new landmark.” Ed Tully, speaking on behalf of the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters, said “We are grateful to
the Town for allowing us to move ahead with this project. This is something that has been a dream of this organization for a long time, and will be a great resource not just for Islip’s firefighting community, but the Islip community at-large.” The license agreement
is in effect for forty-nine years, but can be renewed during that time. Although situated on Town land, members of FITF will be responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of the public display and the property grounds.
