Flowers are budding, which signals two things: Spring is here and it’s time to celebrate Earth Day with community enhancing projects. Keep Islip Clean is the local sponsor of these April events collectively known as the Great American Cleanup, the nationwide effort designed by Keep America Beautiful.

Earth Day 2013 marks the 24th consecutive year of KIC’s involvement in the Great American Cleanup and there are a number of ways to participate.

KIC organizes major litter cleanup events throughout Islip Township that all residents may join and also encourages people to form groups to enhance their own neighborhoods and public spaces. Volunteers often work in related activities such as beautification, recycling drives, graffiti paint-outs and student art contests. A KIC representative is available to meet with grade school children to discuss fun ways to keep our planet clean and green.

KIC supports all endeavors by providing supplies, acting as a liaison with Town of Islip services and offering general assistance where needed. Major events are listed on the KIC website page www.keepislipclean. org and on Facebook.

Condensing The Collections By: Jamie Lynn Ryan How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them?

And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of.

Personally, I will never discard my CD collection.

In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection.

Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together.

I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really.

I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

purpose – but they’re mine.

They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes.

As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

On Friday, March 15th, thirty-four Business Education students, along with Business Education teacher chaperones Patricia Morgigno and Joanne Macrelli, attended the 2013 Long Island Youth Summit, held at Dowling College.

The Summit brought together over 300 talented high school students for a day of interactive workshops with experts in the fields of medicine, government, business, economics, environmental preservation, community and non-profit activism, and education.

The Summit offered students a unique opportunity to

represent their high school and Long Island’s youth, engaging them in an exploration of important current issues.

The Summit is a partnership among Long Island organizations that include Dowling College, North Shore LIJ Health System, Vision Long Island, and Citizens Campaign for the Environment. Mr. Donald Monti, President and CEO of Renaissance Downtowns, delivered the inspiring and informative keynote speech.

To prepare for the Summit, students researched topics and submitted reports on their findings. Summit

participants were chosen based on the quality of research projects and were awarded a $500 Dowling College scholarship. West Islip HS Business Education student Cristina Negrillo won top honors and was awarded a $2000 Dowling College scholarship based on her research on the topic of Race, Class, Education, And The Economy On Long Island.

In addition, Summit winners will be eligible for a limited number of paid internships at the North Shore LIJ Health System, and other participating organizations.

On Race Day #1 Aidan Kelly of West Islip; a member of the USA Luge Junior National team, took to the ice in the seventh slider position and completed two runs on the 4,740.81 foot track in 1:32.586 (1 minute; 32 and 586 tenths of a second) . Just +0.149 behind leader Tucker West and earning him the silver medal for the day.

On Race Day #2 the title race looked to be locked up when Tucker West had a fast first run, although Aidan Kelly had a different outcome in mind.

Aidan completed run 1 in 46.096 seconds and run 2 in 46.088 seconds.

Aidan’s second run proved to be the game changer with the combined total for the day of 1:32.184 (1 minute; 32 and 184 tenths of a second). The four run cumulative time total was +0.139 tenths of a second faster then West and enough to capture the title of 2013 Norton Jr. National Champion!

Aidan age 18, is currently ranked as the top American holding the #13 spot in the world for the sport of luge in the category of Junior sliders (men to age 20). Aidan just finished up his 5th competitive year

Spring may have sprung elsewhere in the US but in Lake Placid, NY sliders and frigid spectators withstood temperatures hovering in the high 20’s and snow frosting the track this past weekend. Following Junior World Cup Luge races in Lillehammer Norway, Konigssee Germany, Park City Utah, Calgary Canada, Oberhof Germany, IGLS Austria and Winterberg Germany the U.S. Luge team returned stateside to Mount Van Hovenberg in Lake Placid, NY. The 2013 Norton Jr. National race saw Aidan Kelly narrowly edging out teammate Tucker West for the title. This win marks the second time a Long Islander has achieved this title. Eight years ago Matt Mortensen of Huntington stood atop the podium as Jr. National Champion, on Sunday, March 25th, Aidan Kelly brought the title and a GOLD medal back to Long Island.

The Jr. National Luge Champion is crowned following a weekend of racing.

The four-run race format over two days is used to emulate the Olympic competition schedule. Each day, two race heats take place for the men, women and doubles sliders. The Jr. National Champion is decided by

To start off the new year, students of the West Islip School District in grades 4-8 were given the opportunity to compete in a school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 25th Annual National Geographic Bee. This year’s school competition took place at each elementary school and middle school, and thousands of schools around the United States.

The following are West Islip school winners: Blaise Coppola (Beach St. Middle School grade 8), Angelo Spriratos (Udall Rd. Middle School grade 7), John Franchina (Bayview grade 5), Dorian Scourtos (Manetuck grade 4), Nick Sandoval (Oquenock grade 5), and Jason Gaiardelli (PJ Bellew grade 4). The school winners took a written test that was sent to Washington, D.C. to be scored. The top 100 scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 5th. All state winners will participate in the National Championship which is held in Washington, D.C. In order to continue to spark the interest of fourth and fifth grade students on the subject of geography and increase awareness of the world, a District-wide Geography Championship was then held on the evening of January 24th in the PJ Bellew Auditorium for all first, second and third place National Geographic winners from our elementary

schools. The West Islip School-wide Enrichment (W.I.S.E.) program hosts this local Geography Bee, coordinated by teacher Vivian Hollinger, during which students compete for the title of West Islip District Elementary Geography Champion.

Our District-wide Elementary winner this year was fifth grader John Franchina from Bayview Elementary School. The second place winner was fifth grader Andrew Spiratos from Manetuck Elementary School, and the third place winner was fourth grader Dorian Scourtos from Manetuck Elementary School.

Everyone can test their geography knowledge with the exciting GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www. nationalgeographic.com/ goebee, which poses ten new questions a day, or by downloading the National Geographic GeoBee Challenge app, with more than 1,000 questions collected from past Bees.

Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors.

While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease.

April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him.

National Walking Day In celebration of National Walking Day, on Wednesday, April 3rd, the American Heart Association is encouraging Americans to get fit and have fun by launching Show Us Your Moves.

The month-long Instagram promotion encourages consumers to submit photos of their

favorite fun physical activity – dancing, roller skating, walking with friends, gardening – you name it! Selected photos will be featured each week on www.heart.org and various American Heart Association social media pages. By sharing pictures of their physical activity on Instagram with the hashtag

#mymoves, consumers can help spread the notion that exercise can be fun.

On National Walking Day, a day where hundreds of thousands across the nation take steps to improve their health, Americans are encouraged to spend at least 30 minutes of their day briskly walking.

Physical activity is critical

to being healthy, but less than 50 percent of adults get enough daily exercise.

Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to see the health benefits of physical activity such as lower blood pressure, improved bone health, weight maintenance after weight loss, better sleep, and more

energy. With Show Us Your Moves, the American Heart Association hopes people will continue to make physical activity a priority beyond National Walking Day and find the fun in being fit.
