The glass ceiling is a metaphor used to represent an invisible barrier that keeps a given demographic from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy. The metaphor was first coined by feminists in reference to barriers in the careers of high-achieving women.
Standing here in 2023 and looking behind us, you’d have to say in many ways that glass ceiling has been shattered. We have females in major cEO roles, running massive companies. Female leaders in politics, as Premiers and holding Ministerial portfolios. and if you look around you, many women run small businesses these days.
Sure, many would point out situations where we haven’t reached equal pay or opportunity, but there’s no denying we have progressed dramatically over the decades.
Some of us are old enough to have lived through huge changes, but even then we tend to forget how different life used to be for women until reminded.
If you are as old as me and grew up in the seventies and eighties, chances are the marriage and lifestyle of your parents was vastly different to how you live now.
For instance, my mother didn’t work for the first 15 years of my life. She also didn’t drive. her home-time dress code was an a-line mini skirt and rollers in her hair in readiness for her husband to arrive home. She served up the obligatory meat and three veg at precisely 6 o’clock on the dot so it would be piping hot when Dad walked in the door. In stark contrast, I work, I drive and my standard home-time dress code is pyjamas and two inches of regrowth in my hair. Greg and I share the housework and cooking duties, and more often than not when it’s my turn we are getting home delivered chinese.
It is somewhat hard to imagine now, a world where women were not allowed to vote. and although we were leaders of sorts by being the second country to “allow” it (hello New Zealand at #1) we didn’t allow aboriginal women to until much later. On that note, aboriginal men couldn’t either, but that’s another story for another day.
Women were once not allowed to open a bank account without their husband’s permission; therefore they couldn’t take out loans or have access to their own savings. My head hurts just typing this!
Far less women had jobs or an income, and prior to the contraceptive pill being introduced had little alternatives on how their life would be played out.
Did you know that back in the day if you were a female and enjoyed an alcoholic beverage, you’d be seated in a “Ladies Lounge” at the pub because women were banned from entering the public bar?
My grandmother used to tell me about when my grandfather was courting her. Many of their “dates” consisted of her sitting in a tiny room of the pub, lovingly knitting him a scarf (along with several other girlfriends doing the same) while the blokes they hoped to marry drank up a storm in the main bar. can you imagine!
Thank goodness those days are gone and on March 8, its a great time to reflect on how far we’ve come - because it is proof that change can and does happen.
We need to harness that drive for change and work together with males to create further change in important issues such as domestic violence.
Blacktown City celebrates sensational senior stars

Upgrade to Richmond Road benefits Riverstone and Londonderry area
LiberaL Candidate for riverstone Mohit Kumar and Londonderry Candidate, Samantha Talakola have welcomed the Perrottet Team’s $385 million upgrade to richmond road, thanks to the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government’s $5 billion Westinvest program.
“This is a crucial investment into a key road that will allow families, tradies, truckies and other motorists to move around the area in a safe way,” Mr Kumar said.
Ms Talakola said, “The community will welcome this important announcement which is only possible because of the Liberal Government’s strong economic plan for the future”.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said these critical upgrades would be a game-changer for families and business owners who travel along this road every day.
“We are making sure families across Western Sydney who use richmond road can get to where they need to safely and sooner,” Mr Perrottet said.
“This upgrade to richmond road is only possible because of the NSW Liberal and Nationals long-term economic plan to keep our state moving forward.”
Treasurer Matt Kean said $385 million has been allocated to transform richmond road and ensure a smoother, safer journey for drivers.
“The Liberal and Nationals Government is committed to future proofing the primary northsouth arterial route between richmond and the M7 Motorway, which passes through the key communities of Hawkesbury, Penrith and blacktown,” Mr Kean said.
“We are able to support the growth of Sydney’s North West because of the NSW Government’s strong economic management and the WestConnex asset recycling program.”
Minister for Metropolitan roads Natalie Ward said two sections of richmond road would be upgraded which would also improve flood resilience.
“This is a rapidly growing area and we need to ensure families, tradies and truckies can rely on this key route to get to work and home to their loved ones,” Mrs Ward said.
“We are connecting people to areas of employment, education facilities, shopping centres, and providing an evacuation route for those living in the Hawkesbury-Nepean flood catchment.”
The funding includes:
- $285 million for planning and early works to widen to six lanes a 2.2 kilometre section between the M7 Motorway and Townson road and to build a new off-ramp bridge to connect richmond road to Westlink M7.
- $100 million to widen to four lanes a section of richmond rd between elara boulevard and Heritage road at Marsden Park.
‘You never stop learning’: Next generation of doctors kick-start their careers
bLaCKToWN and Mount Druitt Hospitals (bMDH) are proud to share that 56 junior medical officers (JMOs) have been welcomed to undertake a supervised year of practice in medicine, surgery, and emergency medicine across both hospitals.
The JMOs have completed a comprehensive two-week orientation program that included didactic presentations, procedural skills, mandatory training, competency assessments, buddy rounding and orientation to Mount Druitt Hospital.
Medical intern apsara Peiris has an advantage over her fellow medical colleagues, having spent a few months working at blacktown Hospital as an assistant in Medicine (aiMS) in the geriatrics and neurology departments in 2022.
“I’m more confident in performing procedural skills because of the time already spent working at the hospital so i feel like that gives me a head start,” apsara said.
apsara’s passion for medicine began when she was young and grew during her school years. She describes practicing medicine as a unique privilege as sickness is non-discriminatory and can affect
anyone no matter their background –something other careers do not offer. in 2018, apsara relocated from Sri Lanka to complete her bachelor of Medicine degree at Western Sydney University.
“i am very excited to commence working at blacktown Hospital” apsara said.
“The hospital has an outstanding reputation as a friendly, warm, diverse, and accepting place of employment and was rated number one by a number of my student peers.”
The Merrylands resident is thrilled to begin her medical journey working at bMDH in the geriatrics,
cardiology, allied Health and surgery departments and gain experience and knowledge from our medical and nursing teams.
“i’m excited as this job can be so rewarding – helping others and hopefully giving people a reason to smile.
“Medicine is such an interesting subject and a challenge. You never stop learning, never get bored and there are always exciting new developments and advancements,” she said.
apsara is favouring dermatology but wants to keep an open mind and experience all the specialities before
she makes her decision.
Director of Medical Services Dr alison Loughran-Fowlds welcomed the new cohort of future doctors to western Sydney.
“bMDH is an extraordinary place for interns to commence their careers,” alison said.
“We offer peer mentoring and specialist programs for them to train as specialised doctors or general practitioners.
“Working at bMDH can lead to a rewarding, satisfying career opportunity that offers long-term job opportunities for all.”
BMDH Resident Medical Officer association President Dr Nishita Muchhala welcomed the new junior medical officers and looks forward to working closely with them.
“i’ve worked at blacktown Hospital over the last 12 months, and it has been a very rewarding experience that has afforded me not just fantastic clinical experience but lifelong friends who i depend on regularly for everything from emotional or physical support while on the wards,” Nishita said. almost 1,100 medical graduate interns have commenced work across NSW rotating between metropolitan and rural hospitals.

RAS’S WORKING DOGS
R AS’S working and high jumping dogs will be at this year’s show with demonstrations of not only man’s best friend’s amazing ability to handle and muster stock but also you can bring your own pooch along for the high jumping contest.
Kylie and Darren Adams, both successful competitors in cattle dog trialling, will have their dogs on hand and explain some of their training techniques and how and why working dogs are used on farms around Australia every day.
The dogs used are known as New Zealand short haired collies (think Footrot flats) and bred solely for their knack to control all kinds of livestock, from sheep and goats to cattle and the ducks that will be used today.
The light hearted yet informative demonstration starts with basic breakingin methods through to actually working a flock of ducks within metres of the crowd with two dogs working as one to manoeuvre the ducks under the control of their master. At the end of each show Darren and Kylie will bring the dogs out into the crowd so as the young and old alike can get up close and have a pat with these amazing hounds.
Once again you are more than welcome to come up and say G’day for a ‘Pat & Chat’ after the show.

Antique Machinery
ONe of Australia’s oldest professions, and one of Blacktown City’s favourite sports in earlier times, is one of the attractions at this year’s Blacktown City Show.
In the early days no-one thought of woodchopping as a sport, just another novelty show attraction. Brawny, hard-drinking axemen took part in informal contests, but there were no rules as such.
Gradually rules did evolve and by the beginning of the century, woodchopping became established as an important event at any big show in Australia and New Zealand. The advent of the chainsaw ended the era of the axemen in the forests but the sport lives on and is still thriving in Australia.
Sydney Antique Machinery Club is back again this year. They will be easy to find by the sound of old engines running like they did when Grandpa was a boy.
Come and have a look and a yarn with the Club members who have brought a few samples of their hobby for you to enjoy in a good restoration they run as badly as they did when they were new. Tell them about your own favourite memory of old machinery from when you were growing up in the (so called) good old days. The Club was formed to bring together people with an interest in old machinery, particularly old engines and tractors and the equipment driven by them.
The Club promotes the preservation and restoration of this equipment and its members provide advice and assistance to each other. The Club meets monthly at Hawkesbury Showground, between Windsor & Richmond and organises one major rally each year on the third weekend in September.
They also attend many events run by other organisations, and conduct displays of their machinery.
A 1/3 scale Fowler traction engine, built by one of our members, will be moving around the Showground and is worth a close look when you see it.

Worthington Family in Court
By Lyn Forde – President/Research Officer of St Marys & District Historical Society Inc.John oliver Worthington was born in Penrith in 1868 to John & Matilda Worthington. he married Caroline Teasdell at newtown in 1889. In April 1892 Caroline was suing John for maintenance in the Penrith Police Court where she stated that she was the wife of John and was twenty years of age and had two children and it was a fortnight since she received any support from him. She said she remembered on Wednesday 31st March John went away to play at a ball, and on that occasion she was sitting in her house with Paul harford who had been there a few hours before, when the front door burst open and Alfred and William Worthington came in with a man named o’Keefe who stayed outside, when a certain accusation was made about her by Alfred. She have not been guilty of any wrongful familiarity with Paul harford because he came to see if she would continue to work for him as she had been working for him before and he had brought some news from Sydney about her family there. John was a friend of Paul’s and had often asked him around to stay at the house for an hour or two. Adultery was John’s defence. Caroline said that Paul harford remained for half an hour until John came home so as to explain matters to him, but John did not come home until the next night and came in with his brother and took her eldest daughter and told her to get out of the place by the next morning. on the Saturday following he came back and said that if she would go to her family in Sydney he would give her the furniture, but she said she would not go and then he said that if she did not go he would put her out and charge her with adultery and would say that was why he was leaving her. John said his brother had told him what was said on Friday and he believed him and he came and took the furniture. Some of the furniture had been given to her by his brother and he took her bed away and everything in the house. She said that John can earn £2 a week if he works and sometimes he plays at dances and gets 15 shillings a night and she is prepared to take that amount a week for her support. Caroline said that John told her to clear out because she had committed adultery with Paul harford, but it was close to 9 o’clock when Paul came to her house on the night when John’s two brothers broke in, between eleven and twelve o’clock at night. It is a four-roomed cottage facing the main road and there is no hall in the house. We were sitting in the dining room at the table and we were not playing cards or had any music from the time Paul came in. She had not been charged with improper conduct with Paul harford before but she had been told that her husband’s brothers were always around the house and had a bad opinion of her. She was not on her back on the bed. They didn’t come to the bedroom door and strike a match and she didn’t say Paul was only having a lark with her. John took her child from her and it is over twelve months ago since she worked for Paul and her husband did not refuse to allow her to work for him twelve months ago. John’s brother Alf said, “I have been watching you for six months” and she did not say to Alf in the front room “Come here you bastard I want
to talk to you” and he did not say “I will talk to you when we get justice”. Caroline said that Alf said to Paul “that you have been in the bedroom with “Carrie” and he was watching through the window shutter” and she said that she had not been in the bedroom with Paul harford. Alf then said’ “remember Carrie I’ve got plenty of money and I don’t care if it costs me £500 to see you parted “ and he called her a “bloody woman”. She said that he abused her at her front door about two years ago and said he would give a hundred to get her parted from “Jacky”. Paul harford said he has a boot factory at St Marys and he remembered being at John’s place once when the door was broken open. he was in the habit of calling there when John was present and no undue familiarity occurred that night or at any other time and he has never behaved or tried to behave improperly with Mrs Worthington at any time. he stayed in the house for some time hoping John would return but he didn’t know John was at Mulgoa that night. next Alice Musgrave said that she was a married woman residing in Sydney and she received a telegram from her sister and came to St Marys where she saw Caroline in rather a delicate state of health. She was present when John came and took the furniture out of the house and then came back for the bed where the baby was sleeping. he took the baby handing it to a boy who was standing by and said, “throw this bloody kid on the floor” and she said, “you’re a coward and no man would take the bed from under her”. John then said ‘“hold your tongue you bloody woman” and she struck him and he called out help, help, help and his brother rushed in and caught her by the throat and she waved her arm around and knocked him to the floor. At this stage the Bench suggested that to save a great deal of unpleasantness, an amicable arrangement might be arrived at between the parties, but John would not agree to a settlement in any shape or form. In July 1893 Caroline was in court again where orders were made for support from John for the three girls for five shillings a week each for twelve months. In September 1898 John sought a divorce from Caroline on the grounds of adultery with William nutland on more than one occasion. The decree was granted to John and he gained custody of the children. In 1910 John married Agnes Horrigan. He died five years later at the Western Suburbs hospital. John met with an accident at the homebush Saleyards while inspecting a horse he intended buying. he was knocked down and trodden on his head and hip. he was moved to the hospital where he remained only a few days as it was thought he was sufficiently recovered to go home. On the following Saturday he had to be taken to the hospital again when lockjaw set in and he died never regaining consciousness after his admission to the hospital. The funeral took place at St Mary Magdalene Church and Cemetery at St Marys with Reverend Bowers officiating and Mrs John Price and Son having charge of the funeral arrangements. Why getting your home loan in place gets you ahead
Alex SonciniAgrowing number of Australian mortgage holders are concerned about rising interest rates, with the majority of them taking positive action to mitigate the financial impact, according to new AMP research.
From my own discussions with homeowners many will be worried about their mortgage repayments if interest rates rise further, especially when repayments are compared to what they were paying in early 2022.
with all the doom and gloom still around from COVID-19, inflation and rising interest rates, Australians have been taking a wait-and-see approach to interest rates, when the rate increases will cease, and the property market, in the hope their property value is not negatively impacted.
we are still in uncertain times, the property market is falling and the reserve Bank of Australia has increased interest rates for a ninth month in a row to 3.35%, extending Australia’s fastest pace of increases in borrowing costs in almost three decades.
That puts borrowers in various situations, from first-home owners with limited savings buffers who
are more at risk of mortgage stress, and owners who bought homes with low-deposit loans at the end of the pandemic boom could experience negative equity where the loan is greater than the property value.
one of the biggest potential risks to housing market values is the ‘fixed-rate cliff’ where variable rates after the fixed rate period ends tend to be much higher than usual. Mortgage rates fell dramatically during the pandemic where fixed rates were very low. The issue is when the fixed period expires the home loan will usually revert to your lender’s current standard variable rate which has now risen significantly.
Smart borrowers are getting a head start.
Up until now, many people have put off buying a home or purchasing an investment property and refinancing their home loan because they were waiting to see what interest rates were doing and when the increase in home prices would cease or dip significantly. But the problem with that approach is that you can miss out on lenders offers or great buying opportunities when conditions calm, which
is what we’re seeing now.
This is a good reason why you should get your home loan refinancing, purchase pre-approval and other finances in place, even if you’re in wait-andsee mode: when conditions are right for you, you could swoop in for your perfect property while others are still sorting their mortgage out.
when you look at the property market overall, it makes sense to get your finances in place. Even though house prices across the country recent have dropped, overall property prices have been slowly moving upwards and if you’re waiting to see if the market will drop further, you risk seeing the amount you need to save for a deposit creep slowly up.
You also need to take into account that the current interest rate increases were from historic lows which created perfect conditions for ramping up buyer interest and house sales. And that means if your finances aren’t in order, you could miss out on your perfect property now or be able to refinance.

2023 Mayoral Cup begins
By Bo B TurnerRound 5 of the 2023 nSW Premier League is sure to provide plenty of excitement with Blacktown City FC hosting rivals Mt druitt Town Rangers in the first round of the Mayoral Cup. When these cross town rivals hit the pitch the intensity rises and a classic encounter is on the cards.
Blacktown City FC has maintained the Mayoral Cup for the last five years and Head Coach, Mark Crittenden, and his team are not likely to give up the trophy without a fight. Both teams have had slow starts to the season. Mt druitt comes into the round 5 game with one win and three losses to sit towards the bottom of the ladder. Blacktown City have won two with a loss and a draw to their name thus far.
It has been a challenging start for Blacktown City losing three key strikers in three weeks. Mitch Mallia, a talented and experienced running mate to Leading goal scorer Travis Major, suffered a career ending foot injury and had to retire a week before the season commenced. A week later, young sensation, Jordan Smylie, announced he was taking up a contract in Iceland leaving a hole in the ability to score goals. In round three, against the West Sydney Wanderers, Danny Choi, tore his ACL and will be out the rest of the season.
Coach Mark Crittenden has always relied heavily on his bench and younger players with a philosophy that if someone goes out it provides an opportunity for others to step up. Jack O’Brien is one of those players to step up has scored a goal in each of the last two games including the only goal last weekend against Central Coast Mariners. Captain Mario Shabow is also a key piece for Blacktown as he controls the centre of the pitch to set up scoring opportunities for Travis Major and others.
The Blacktown City Senior Women get their 2023 campaign underway on Sunday, March 12th against Marconi. They will host their rivals at Landen Stadium with high hopes to push their way up the ladder and achieve the goal to progress to NPL 1 Status. Game time is 4pm. The Senior Men will hit the road to take on Marconi in a game that is sure to generate plenty of Round six interest.
That same weekend sees the start of all Junior football as well with the Blacktown Boys and Girls Youth and SAP teams commencing their seasons.
Entering their 70th year of Senior and Junior football, the last few weeks have been eventful for Blacktown City FC with the announcement of
Principal Partner, Walker Corporation, and a new naming Rights partner for their home ground at 5 Quinn Ave, Seven Hills – “Landen Stadium”. In early March, Blacktown City FC will also welcome the Grand Opening of “The Star Hotel & Events Centre” as their ‘unofficial’ home away from home. Formerly known as Lily’s Function Centre, The Star will host after game functions and a number of events for Blacktown City FC.
The Star Hotel & Events Centre, and Landen Stadium are both owned by Momento Hospitality, a company committed to work with Blacktown City in their planned growth on and off the field.
Blacktown City VS Mt druitt Town Rangers on Sunday, March 5th at Landen Stadium. Game time is 3pm with the Under 20’s at 1pm. See you there and Go Blacktown City!

BDSFA ready for bumper 2023 football season
By Noel RowsellThe Blacktown District Soccer Football Association (BDSFA) was established in 1979, when a group of members of both the Nepean and Granville Football Associations were looking for somewhere more local for many of their players.
Boasting 24 member clubs, the BDSFA had 10,000 players and 789 teams in 2022.
Following two years of Covid disruption, the BDSFA is expecting growth in 2023 and is currently registering players for the upcoming season.
2020 was the first of the seasons disrupted by Covid, with a cancellation of all competitions at the first half of the year, followed by the cancellation of the back half of the year in 2021.
There were expectations of further cancellations in 2022 but the BDSFA and it’s commited members were able to play every game of the season, including a full finals series – one of the only Football Associations in NSW
to achieve the feat.
BDSFA Chairperson Bill Owen said “Our achievements in 2022 were thanks to the efforts put in by our volunteers. We are a community-based association and rely heavily on volunteers for the effective running of our competitions.
“Our playing groups range from Under 5’s through to Under 21’s in juniors, then All Age, Over 30’s and Over 35’s in seniors.
“The strength of the Association is highlighted by the support between member clubs, which readily assist each other during ground disruptions such as floods, damage, etc.
“We have an advantage over most Associations, as we only deal with one
Council (Blacktown City Council), with which we have a good working relationship”.
The BDSFA head office is on Eastern Road, Rooty hill, which was built in 2012 and features 5 playing fields (one is a synthetic surface).
The ground is also used by the Australian Para Matildas, along with the Young and Future Matildas.
The BDSFA announced recently that they established the Women’s Premier League with hills and Granville Association, enabling women to compete at the highest community level against some of the best local teams Western Sydney has to offer.
Registrations are now being taken
for the upcoming competitions and all details can be found at: https:// registration.dribl.com/search/
The 24 clubs within the BDSFA are: Blacktown Premier Spurs FC, Blacktown St Patrick’s SC, Doonside hawks, eastern Creek Pioneer FC, Glenwood Redbacks, Kings Langley SFC, Lourdes FC, Marayong FC, Marsden Park FC, Minchinbury Jets, Newbury Bulls SC, Oakville United SC, Parklea SFC, Plumpton Oakhurst SC, Polonia Rams SC, Prospect United SC, Ponds FC, Quakers hill Junior SC, Quakers hill Tigers, Riverstone Schofields Junior SC, Rooty Hill FC, Ropes Crossing Strikers, Town Rangers FC, Workers FC.
