POLLEN STREET SOCIAL
POLLEN STREET SOCIAL london, uk
location london, uk site area 570 sqm ( 344 ground level, 226 basement level) Pollen street social, located in the prestigious mayfair district of london, is the first independent restaurant by jason atherton, the former executive chef at gordon ramsay’s michelin starred maze. Neri&Hu’s design concept for pollen street social examines the notion of “social” as a reorganization of the dynamic energies of human interaction. With their masterful manipulation of spatial elements and materiality, architects Neri&Hu have captured the vibrancy of a social dining atmosphere as envisioned by chef atherton—it flows with comfort and familiarity, while occasionally improvisational and unexpected, but which ever direction the conversation turns, pollen street social is sure to be the talk of town. The custom furniture and accessories pieces featured in the interiors are from neri&hu, a product brand spin-off from the architectural firm.

The east atrium, surrounded by public spaces on all the restaurant floors, was designed to be transparent, vibrant, and active. It is a place to see and also a place to be seen. The initial concept was to use the atrium as a point of reference, and more importantly, it allows the other spaces to interact visually. The west atrium was designed as a contrast to the east atrium. The spaces surrounding the west atrium are mostly the private areas such as private dining rooms, restrooms, tea rooms and chef’s tables. The west atrium is architecturally articulated to be somber and quiet serving as the focal point for the evian spa below.

CHI-Q shanghai, china
location shanghai, china area 450 square meters
Situated within the prestigious Three on the Bund, Chi-Q is renowned chef Jean-Georges V ongerichten’s newest addition to a growing collection of restaurants in Shanghai bearing his signature. It is the first one, worldwide, to serve an upscale menu dedicated to the culinary offerings of Korea, a country and culture that is much loved by the chef. The design concept celebrates the beauty of the dramatic yet often neglected a trium at the heart of the restaurant, a feature of the momentous 2004 renovation of this historic building. Neri&Hu’s design creates an abstracted landscape and interiors providing guests an architectural experience to complement the unique gastronomic experience. Cladded in charcoal wood slats and concrete floors, the entrance of the restaurant is reminiscent of the discrete and private entrances found in traditional Korean houses. Upon crossing the threshold of a wooden gate, guests are lead naturally into the long bar along the window, where they may relax with a drink and enjoy an open view onto the raised garden with its massive stone block backdrop. Diners will experience their meal in half sunken seating banquettes leading up to the communal table situated under the large void of the atrium, re-establishing this architectural feature as the heart and climax of the spatial experience. With its unique composition of light, shadows and reflective patterns that evoke the canopy of a forest, the warm-toned metal ceiling is the defining feature that runs throughout the entire dining space. With a deep understanding of materiality, the striking atmosphere inside the main dining space recalls the richness of Korean cuisine—both space and food representing a balance between the delicate, the raw, and the vibrant.

MERCATO shanghai, china
location shanghai, china area 1000 square meters
Situated within the prestigious Three on the Bund, Mercato is renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s newest culinary destination in Shanghai, the first of which to serve up an upscale yet rustic Italian fare. Neri&Hu’s design for the 1,000 square meter restaurant draws not only from the chef’s culinary vision but also from the rich historical context of its locale, harkening to early 1900s Shanghai, when the Bund was a bustling industrial hub. Stripping back the strata of finishes that have built up after years of renovations, the design concept celebrates the beauty of the bare structural elements. Three on the Bund was the first building in Shanghai to be built out of steel, and the architects’ decision to reveal the original steel columns pays homage to this extraordinary feat. Against the textured backdrop of the existing brickwork, concrete, plaster and mouldings, new insertions are clearly demarcated. Constantly playing the new against the old, Neri&Hu’s design is a reflection of the complex identity of not only the historical Bund, but of Shanghai at large.

NEW HEIGHTS RESTAURANT AND BAR 新视角餐厅 shanghai , china
location shanghai, china area 800 square meters
The renovation of new heights, a five-year old restaurant/bar space situated on the bund, elevates this premium restaurant entity to new levels in modern design. The spatial focus of the previous design was centered on the stunning five-story interior atrium. Neri&Hu’s strategy was to refocus the view towards the exterior bund vista, connecting the interior to the historic surroundings. A band of oak-veneered seating alcoves surround the atrium window, anchoring and framing the interior atrium view. A symbolic center for the building, the atrium space offers a visual connection between new heights and the art gallery four stories below. A new sloped ceiling covered in tiled mirror over the bar draws in light and reflected views from the cityscape. The clean, airy effect of the redesign brings new energy into the most significant address in shanghai: three on the bund.

location shanghai, china area 200 square meters
The layering of a glass structure into the Multipurpose Room of the New Heights Dining Room & Bar plays on the notion of transparencies, both literal and phenomenal. The blurring of boundary conditions facilitates programmatic flexibility, allowing the space to function as an extension of the main restaurant or a venue for private events. The material translucency of the steel-framed, frosted-glass insertion performs not only as a spatial device but as a viewing apparatus. On one side, a projected live-streaming image of the Bund offers a simulated “view” of the surrounding urban landscape, while on the adjacent wall, metal-lined box windows capture the actual vista to the south, effectively obscuring the relationship between inside and outside, foreground and background, picture and frame.

HOUSE OF WINE AT THREE ON THE BUND 外滩三号之好吧 shanghai , china
location shanghai, china area 150 square meters
Located on the top floor of the historic Three on the Bund building, House of Wine combines the intimacy of a wine cellar with the urbanity of a Shanghai rooftop bar. Leaving the glossy world of Three on the Bund behind, forming the transition into a space clad in red clay brick, a “re-revealing” of the core building material of the historic buildings lining the Bund. The floor plan is split into two components: a bar area and an adjacent space that features more bistro-like seating. The material composition of wine barrels provides the inspiration for the wood and metal used in the bar area. A steel vestibule marks the transition from the bar area into the bistro and an adjacent terrace overlooking the Bund. The wine cellar is inserted as a solitary object. Inside, wine shelves surround a central table for tasting events.

CAPO shanghai, china
location shanghai, china area 600sqm square meters
The Basilica, an architectural typology of a bygone era that is all too often reduced to a page in the history book or a stop on the tourist route, is revisited as a design concept for a modern Italian restaurant by Neri&Hu. Traditionally at the heart of civic activity, the Basilica was once a bustling public space—a church, a courthouse, a stage, a gallery, and a dining hall all at once—a place to see and be seen. Neri&Hu’s design intent for Capo was to embody the spirit of the Basilica within this cavernous space carved out of the attic of a 1911 building located on the historic Bund of Shanghai. Rather than default to an open plan configuration, Neri&Hu makes the conscious decision to carve up the restaurant into a series of distinct rooms at various scales, each with a unique character, and as such, capturing spaces as vignettes, whilst still embodying a consistent vision through materiality and spatial sequencing.

THE COMMUNE SOCIAL 食社 shanghai, china
location shanghai, china area 495 square meters
The Commune Social located at the Design Republic Design Commune is a new tapas restaurant designed by Neri&Hu Design and Research Office of Shanghai. The food concept is a fresh and modern take on Spanish tapas, where the small dishes served are refined interpretations of the tapas genre with an international twist. The design concept of the space is to emphasize the “sharing” idea of eating tapas, and the four distinct areas in the restaurant (tapas bar, dining room, dessert bar, and the secret bar) are meant to provide different flavors and ingredients for diners to “share”, like they do the food. The diners are encouraged to move from having drinks at the Secret Bar to the tapas bar or the dining room for dinner, then end up at the Dessert Bar to finish the meal. Each room serves something different, and each room evokes a different atmosphere. The four adjoining rooms provide also a communal and social aspect that is in the original spatial concept of the Social restaurant group. (Pollen Street Social in London, and 22 ships in Hong Kong, both designed also by Neri&Hu.) The moving feasting idea is a way for diners to be active in the restaurant, and engage in social activities while dining.

THE FEAST YAN RESTAURANT
THE FEAST YAN RESTAURANT 华苑一号 筵餐厅 shenzhen, china
location shenzhen, china area 2,400 square meters My house is diaphanous, but it is not of glass. It is more the nature of vapour. Its walls contract and expand as I desire. At times, I draw them close about me like protective armour… but at others, I let the walls of my house blossom out in their own space, which is infinitely extensible.” –Georges Spyridaki
This notion of the village begins with the modest gray brick paving that guides one from the façade signage element* into the double height Reception area, where it crawls up onto the wall surfaces to act as a consistent backdrop throughout the spaces of the restaurant. Upon this, a layer of screens formed by vertical wood louvers start to define the circulation paths, a rhythmic enhancement to the long corridors and organizing element to the more loosely placed PDRs behind. Each of the Private Dining Rooms encapsulates a layered spatial experience, each with its own unique furnishings, lighting, and material palette—guests are able to select their dining environment amongst the many room types. Inside the wood-clad rooms, the basket weave timber panels envelop on all sides, including the floor, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The lighting here was selected in order to cast dynamic shadows across the opaque surfaces of the room. Playing on solids and voids, the wooden rooms alternate with glass rooms, which are composed of milky green glass, and give a completely different aura. During the day the reflective surfaces mirror the surroundings as if infinitely, while at night, they emit a luscious absinthian glow, giving these rooms a surreal quality. The captured space between the screen and each room consists of viewing gardens artfully curated with designer chairs and custom vases, and while unoccupiable, they offer breathing moments in a rigid formation of PDRs that could otherwise become repetitive. Taking cues from the restaurant’s name, Neri&Hu’s design is intended as a feast for all the senses, such that the tasting of food is enhanced by the theatricality of the entire dining experience. Contrasting with the enclosed and intimate nature of the PDRs, the Main Dining Room is akin to the town square, a grand double height space which is surrounded by water and delicately wrapped by the same wooden screen element, while 500 hand-blown glass lamps* dance and flutter in the air above the diners. This centrally located space maintains visual connections through strategically cut openings, so that as you pass along the corridors on both levels, your gaze travels across and beyond, as does the light which bounces delightfully throughout. Every opening in the screened layer is carefully crafted; these viewports framed in blackened bronze offer selective glimpses into the rooms behind, and often even further afar to the view outside, creating complex layered spatial conditions that are intentionally provocative.

location beijing, china area 2,080 square meters
Beijing Whampoa Club is situated in a reconfigured traditional Chinese courtyard house on Beijing’s financial street. The design intrigue lay in how to “properly” engage the traditional Chinese courtyard typology with a modern dining experience. nhdro’s design exemplifies the contrast through architectural experience by providing a constant juxtaposition of new/old, fresh/ stale, light/dark, open/enclosed. Containing a main dining room, separate bar, private dining rooms, entry corridors, the project site is actually a courtyard house re-built where one used to stand. The first courtyard was hollowed out and lined with glass to create a reflection pool, a peaceful setting in memory of courtyard houses long gone.

location shanghai, china area 1,400 square meters
Muse club occupies three spaces overlooking an atrium in the newly redeveloped tong le fang factories in shanghai. In a city where new nightclubs abound, muse differentiates itself with a spatial experience unlike any other. Drama is achieved using experiential theater: the insertion of a cocoon, mimicking the symbol of transformation, takes center stage both physically and conceptually. The cocoon serves numerous spatial functions and represents the transformation that every club-goer secretly desires. Interstitial spaces create pockets which serve as private booths, dj stations, dining banquettes, and restrooms. This tension between the public and the private reinvigorates the space, offering a rite of passage for the club-goers’ transformation.
